"So, what did the bitch do to you?" I asked, opening my locker and taking out my first aid kit. I gestured for Maya to give me her hand.

"Um, you know that girl, Emily Fields?" She began, smiling a fraction as she said Emily's name.

"Yeah. We're on the swim team together. She doesn't like me much." I shrugged.

"Why?" Maya frowned.

"I tried to drown Alison." Maya frowns at me questioningly. "What? She pissed me off." I defended.

"Alison did something to you, too?" Maya asked.

"Yeah. She started calling me 'Pigskin'. I don't know her reasoning. And she threatened to out me." I muttered.

"Bitch."

"Yeah. What did she do to you?" I asked, trying to distract her from the sting as I wiped her hand with an antiseptic wipe. "It has to be bad, to make you draw this much blood."

"Emily is…" Maya began. I noticed something on her palm. A Soulmark.

"She's your Soulmate?" I gasped, in awe of the lines on her hand.

"Yeah." Maya said sadly.

"You're incredibly lucky." I told her.

"How? My Soulmate is here, I've met her, we're Marked, but… she wants nothing to do with me." Maya chocked, holding back a sob, by the sound of it.

"I'm not that lucky. I'm not even Marked." I shrugged.

"I'm sure you'll meet your Soulmate one day. There's someone for everyone, right? That's what I think, anyway." She smiled.

"Not me." I sighed.

"Yes, you, unless you're… Oh, god. Are you Unmarked?" She frowned. I nodded slightly, grabbing her other hand and getting another wipe. "Sorry. I must seem like such an ass. I don't mean it in a bad way. It's not like there's anything wrong with not having a Mark."

"It's okay. I get it." I said flatly, wanting her to stop talking.

She didn't get the message. "I read like, only one in a million or something are Unmarked. Sorry if I like, offended you. I hate when people make assumptions about me, so I can only imagine-"

She was babbling. I cut her off. "Look, it's okay. Really. And it's actually one in fifty million. I'm a little surprised you figured it out this quick." I gave her an awkward half smile.

"Do you know why…" She began, but seemed to change her mind mid question.

"Why I'm Unmarked? Well, my dad was in the army. And he was my mom's soulmate. They had Marks and everything. And my mom got pregnant literally days before my dad was called away on duty. When he died, her Soulmark became a scar. I was born a few months later, Unmarked." I shrugged. It really wasn't a big deal.

"I am so sorry."

"Don't be. It's not like it's your fault. It happens." I smiled fully at her, to show her it was okay.

"You know, I think it's good. I mean, it means you're not restrained by Marks. Look at me. I've spent years wondering who my Soulmate is and I've found her, and it's brought me nothing but misery." She look thoughtful as she continued. "When I was a kid, my grandpa used to tell me about the Marks. He told me about Unmarked people. He said they were rare, and that they were lucky. They could choose their own fate. And they didn't have to search for someone or something. They could go anywhere, do anything, and screw the consequences."

Her words elicited a genuine smile from me. "I've never thought about it like that. I like it. I've always seen myself as more of a… spare part."

"Of course not. No one should think of themselves like that. Everyone is important. Anyone could change anything, so long as they put their mind to it."

"Okay, does everything you say sound like it should be on a bumper sticker?" I joked. She laughed.

"You'll find out if you go out with me this Friday." She replied.

"What?" I dropped her hand.

She took a deep breath before continuing. "You seem like a nice person. You're definitely the nicest person I've met here. I could use a friend. And it doesn't have to be a date, or anything, I mean, unless you want…" The school bell rang, suddenly louder than the alarm bells in my head.

"Uh, okay. If you're sure…" I said hesitantly.

"Great. I'll see you Friday night." She beamed, walking off. I watched her go.

What had I gotten myself into?

A/N~ Wow. So… that happened. Even I didn't see that coming, which says a lot. (Last time I leave my laptop open when my friends are over). But now it has happened, I kind of like it, in a weird, slightly messed up way… What do you guys think of this vaguely mutanty ship? Comment with your thoughts.
