Marias eyes flickered open to see that she was in, what looked like a hospital room. The sun lit the room up as it glowed proudly through the window. She groaned as she tried to sit up but found that she was too weak to. She rested her head back down on the single flat pillow and sighed, trying to recall what had happened. "I guess… it was all just a dream." She closed her eyes but had no intention of sleeping.
She was thinking through her 'dream', trying to recall missing fragments. She remembered the Creeper and what happened to her friends and family. It has to be a dream. There are no such thing as demons or devils. She also remembered the human organ she was forced to eat and how ill she was when she had gotten bitten.
Marias eyes opened instantly and she reached for the side of her neck. It was the only way to confirm if this was a reality or not. Her blood turned cold as she felt padding. She bolted up, forcing herself to sit up straight. Panic ran through her but then as if on cue, her door handle slowly turned. Her eyes grew wider as she tugged the sheets on the bed in anticipation.
A blonde nurse walked in slowly, her eyes instantly searching for Maria. A wave of relief crashed into her showing on her tanned face. "Oh good, you're awake." She smiled, walking in. She had dirty blonde hair that was scraped back into bun and deep brown eyes. Maria flushed slightly as she gazed upon her arrival.
"Is everything okay?" She asked, referring to Marias current position. "Um… yeah. I thought you were…Someone else." The nurse smiled brightly and sat down on the end of her bed, leaving a tray of vegetable soup, buttered bread and a carton of orange juice on her bead. She leaned in half way as if she was about to tell a secret, "You mean the guy who brought you here?" Maria perked up and reached for the nurses hands, "You mean you saw him?" "Well yeah, he had you in his arms when he dropped you off. You looked to be in pretty bad condition."
Just to be sure, Maria asked an important question, "What did he look like?" The nurse crumpled her face in confusion, "Well… I couldn't really see him that clear because he dropped you off and then quickly left as if he was in a rush. He wore a black hat and a long black jacket which almost touched the ground. Nobody could get a close view of him. He was a pretty shady character."
Maria smiled in relief, "I guess it really wasn't a dream." The nurse tilted her head slightly, "I'm sorry. What wasn't a dream?" "-Meeting him." After a while the nurse rose and checked the monitors. "I'm surprised you're awake to be honest." She smiled, keeping her eyes on the screens. "What do you mean?"
"Well you had a pretty horrendous infection on your neck. Almost like a lion took a chunk out of you. Do you remember?" Maria remembered all too well, "No." "Well if that bite went deeper it would have completely ripped your tongue out." Maria froze. So that's what he wanted! That's why I couldn't see that other persons wound. The person we help stick onto the wall together. His tongue had been eaten instead. Taken from the mouth and not form the neck. Maria shuddered, feeling lucky. But why didn't he take it? Maria pursed her lips in confusion.
"Seriously it was inches away." The nurse scoffed, writing on her clipboard. "So, wait. How long have I been in here for?" Maria gasped. "He brought you here last night. If he didn't then you would have been dead by now which is why I was so surprised when you woke up." Maria was to shocked to reply. After a while of recording data down on her hospital records the young nurse turned to leave.
After hearing a slight click from the door Maria reached for the needle in her arm and slowly pulled it out, securing it with cotton wool that she had found in the draw. She took a sharp intake of breath whilst doing so. Then she rose from her bed to find that she was wearing a hospital gown. She grimaced at herself before studying the room.
She looked In the small closet. In the bathroom. In the cupboards. Finally she found her clothes that she wore before she ended up in hospital. They were under her bed. Neatly folded up. She quickly got dressed into her original clothes and grabbed the bread lying on the tray, dipped it into her soup and took a bite. This was the first thing she had eaten in days. She dipped it again, held the bread in her mouth to reach for the carton of juice and shoved it into her pocket before leaving her room.
She attempted to run down the hospital but found her lack of energy was slowing her down. It was like one of those nightmares for her where the halls became longer and she wasn't getting anywhere. She finished of her bread roll and reached for the juice pocket in her pocket. "Excuse me..Are you lost?" A doctor asked. He was tall, young and had short dark hair.
Maria stopped running to answer him but found this impossible with her mouth full. She stuck her finger up at him as if to say 'wait-a-sec'. He chuckled at her as he clutched his clipboard close to his chest, his stethoscope hanging from his neck. "No, where is the exit?" This sounded more of a demand.
The doctor peered from her beyond his glasses and pointed, "Go to you right and take another turn. The go straight ahead."
"Thanks." She murmured before turning around. "Wait!" He yelped, grabbing her shoulder. Maria froze. "Yeah?" She turned to face him. "What's your name?" He blushed, scratching his neck. "I have a boyfriend you jerk now leave me alone. I'm under allot of stress right now so piss off for Christ sake!" She started to cry, "I don't even know how much time I have left."
Maria turned on her heel to run, holding her juice in her left hand. Tears flying from her cheeks. She eventually had stop to catch her breath. She still didn't have enough energy and her legs felt week. She felt like she was going to pass out or her legs would at least give up on her.
She stabbed her juice box with the straw and began to drink. She peered around her and saw a trash can next her. A newspaper was discarded. She picked it up to look at the date. Maybe then would she get some sort of idea of how long he had left.
In shock she dropped her juice box as her eyes scanned the title. 'Demon house found". She opened the paper to reach the full story. A picture was displayed, taking up both pages. It was the church. It was in flames with thick black smoke polluting the air. The pages turned grey and shrivelled as her tears fell upon them with loud tapping sounds.
