The room was empty when Watari stepped in, L was no longer lying in the bed and Light was nowhere to be seen.

"Ryuzaki?" The old man cried out but received no answer. Panic set in as he dashed from the room, he ran down the hallways of the building calling out, his mind racing. L was deathly ill, there was no possible way for him to get up on his own. The only explanation was Light. Watari had to find them.

He roamed the halls for what must have been hours until he heard Light's voice faintly from one of the rooms.

"I'm sorry Ryuzaki, I wish it hadn't come to this. You were right about everything, I am Kira, but you won't be telling anyone will you?" Watari rushed inside and found Light standing beside the detective who was now lying on a table.

"What have you done light?" The man growled angrily.

"I didn't do anything at all, don't you remember?"

"Obviously not."

"I'm not surprised, its common to block these things from your mind, it was hard for you and The way it happened-"

"What happened?"

"The world lost It's most famous detective this afternoon, it was sudden but you can't tell me you didn't see it coming."

"You're a damn liar, I'd remember something like that!" Watari roared.

"Come and see for yourself then." Light took a step back and Watari moved closer, he reached out to the pale figure on the table.

"No. L, wake up, don't leave me." He begged stroking L's hair. L didn't react, he remained still.

"This can't happen, you aren't meant to die now, you have so much left, we were going to find something for you to-"

"There's no need for that now is there, you're wasting your time, L can't hear you anymore." Light laughed.

"This is your fault, you did something." Watari accused.

"I told you I didn't, but I can't say the same for what's going to happen with you-" Light's voice was replaced with loud rapid beeping and the room shook.

"Watari, get up.." a voice called.

Watari's eyes snapped open and he realized that the beeping was from one of L's monitors. Watari was put of his chair instantly and he began to attempt to save the detective who had stopped breathing.

"Light, we need to get a breathing tube in place, get the supplies over on the table." Without a word, Light did as he was told and watched the man work.

"You won't die L, you can't please" he pleaded as he attached the tube to a breathing machine, Watari sat back in the chair feeling the tears on his face. He knew in his heart that he was watching his boy die but wouldn't accept it. He stood once more before lowering himself onto the side of the bed and leaning forward . His head now resting on L's chest as he sobbed. Light wanted to comfort the man, but knew there were no words to help.

"Watari, is there anything I can do?" Light asked sympathetically.

"No. At this point light, I doubt anyone can do anything. He was responding I don't understand what changed."

"I wish I knew, maybe it would have helped."

"What happened before you woke me?"

"He was sleeping and then-"

"He didn't wake up at all?" Light shook his head. After a few minutes, Watari added more medication and sat down.

It would be another three days before any changes occurred. Watari was constantly staring at the monitors or trying his best to talk L into coming back, promising to give him anything he wanted. Finally, it seemed that L had gotten the strength to grant the request and the breathing tube was removed soon after.

"Watari-" L whispered, his throat was sore from the tube and he felt terrible but Watari needed him. He couldn't have cared less about the rest of the world, Watari was the only one that mattered.

"Just rest, will you take some water?" L wanted to say no because of the pain it would cause but the sadness in the old man's eyes wouldn't allow it and he agreed. L sipped slowly, ignoring the pain to the best of his ability.

"It's going to be alright, I know it hurts and I'm sorry, as of right now, with all the other medications I've been giving to you, I can't give you anything new without stopping at least one." Watari said sadly.

"I can deal with a sore throat Watari, it is a minor pain compared to the pain I had prior to the pain management." L said weakly. Watari placed a hand to L's forehead.

"You have quite a fever my dear Ryuzaki." He said with concern.

"I will be fine Watari, it will be gone soon."

"You'll be fine, that's quite a change from just a few days ago, are you saying this because you believe it or to-"

"I am saying this because I have a very capable doctor who is not only highly skilled at all he does but also has the patience to guide me in the right direction when I have decided otherwise. I am sure that if there is a way to make me well, you will find it." Watari smiled.

"Thank you.' Tears fell from the old man's eyes and he sat down on the bed next to L.

L reached up and placed his hand on the old man's face wiping away the tear drops with his thumb.

"Watari, I must apologize for the pain I have inflicted upon you."

"You weren't the cause. It's the damn illness that doesn't seem to let go. You shouldn't have to be concerned with my tears, all that matters is you."

"How any times have you done the same for me Watari, I suppose it is my turn now. You asked that I live and I will try for you. It is difficult for me, however I will do as you ask."

Light knew now that he couldn't have any part in killing them. The father and son bond nearly made him want to contact his own father. L would have to be well now,

light thought, there was no way it could turn out differently, the parent Child bond was too strong, then again, if love really worked that way, no one would ever lose their loved ones. Light found himself hoping for something to come along and make L better but that would take a miracle, and Light never believed such things.
