Well, we are at the final chapter of Memory Lane. It's been fun, and I may make another fanfic like this later...but for now...this is it.
The door opened and Ludwig walked into the darkening room. "Bruder? Are you here?" He couldn't possibly go through the album in this light. He thought to himself as he walked in, eyes going straight to the chair where his brother was previously sat. His concerned eyes slowly turned to warm as he saw his brother asleep, all strain and pain erased from his expression. Slowly, he took a look at how far into the album he got. "He got half way through...that's more than last time." he said to himself, trying not to wake his elder sibling.
Shuffling slightly, the Prussian's grip on the book lessened and lessened until the large album fell softly to the floor with a soft thud. Soft snores passing his lips as his mouth fell open loosely. Chuckling, the German placed the beers he had bought on the table and knelt down to pick up the album. It was then he realized that one of those pictures was missing; but he honestly could not name which one. After a moment of staring at the book, he heard the Albino nation mewl in his sleep and his eyes opened lazily.
"West...?" he moaned, "close the curtain's will ya? Be a pal!" His voice was full of sleep, eyes barely open and his hair all messed up from shifting around so much.
"Ja, alright Gilbert. Go back to sleep now." Ludwig replied, voice soft for once. If Italy saw me being so kind to mein bruder he'd surely get the wrong idea...or Austria! He thought before shaking his head, Nein, I cannot allow myself to think about him now...it's just me and mein bruder...whose bravery inspired me to keep going after the World Wars...who never gave up on me...and so...i'll never give up on him.
It's just like...that time
When Fritz was alive...
Germany's POV + Flashback
"Gilbert? What's wrong?" I heard mein vater ask mein bruder while they thought I was downstairs. They were on the balcony, presumably because mein bruder was rather upset and wouldn't say why. I tried to listen to their conversation, but being so young I could barely understand anything until he said:
"I don't want to be alone as I was when your dad died!"
That was the one thing I understood. Death was something I understood and despised. Mein bruder was concerned about when vater would eventually die? He feared being alone more than anyone I knew...Maybe now that I look back...I can see why. He was alone for all those years until Old Fritz came along...and then he felt love and compassion for the first time...for the first time he wasn't...a loner. Mein bruder felt love, and now that his time with vater was ending...he felt that all those wonderful emotions he had felt would end too. It hurt me also, to think that my own bruder couldn't consider me as a companion...
"You have your bruder now, as well as friends in Antonio and Francis!"
This was true. Over the last few centuries, Gilbert had made many more friends. He couldn't abandon them now right?! At heart, we all knew that Fritz's time may be ending...but with every dusk there is a dawn, and in that a new life was to be made!
From then on, I was determined to look after mein bruder!
Mein best friend...
Mein family...
End Germany's POV + Flashback
After reminiscing to himself for about 10 minutes, Ludwig closed the curtains to his living room and allowed it to come into complete darkness along with the rest of his house. He smiled slightly to himself, thinking about the past and how much he and his bruder had both changed over the time. To him, it was a way of showing progress from being the small child he was to the large and stronger nation he is today. To not wake Gilbert, he was silent as he picked up the elder nation and held him in his arms. Slowly and silently, he walked to his bruder's room and tucked him into bed, ruffling the sleeping nation's hair before standing at the door.
"Gute Nacht, mein bruder." He said softly, turning away and closing the door.
At the moment he heard the door click, Gilbert opened his ruby eyes and grinned to himself. Slowly, he lifted his jacket and took it off, digging into its pocket to find a picture of him, his bruder and his vater.
"Gute nacht, mein bruder and mein vater."
And now the moment i've been dreading...so long, farewell, goodbye! I hope you have enjoyed this fanfiction and please note...it is merely a farewell from me because...Gilbert only got through half of the album! The other half shall return in the next fanfic! Keep an eye out! Goodbye!
