Back in the present, and back into danger we go!

Chapter 12: Spider Attack!

As the memory came to an end, the Doctor smiled as he thought about his old companions. He hoped that Tegan had settled back into her old life on Earth, and wondered how Turlough was doing as the hero of Trion. He also couldn't help but chuckle at the thought of the Judoon being tricked by a simple misdirection trick like that.

Suddenly, his eyes flicked open and the cricket ball dropped out of his hand and bounced on the floor. "Misdirection…"

He sighed in frustration as he picked up the ball and stuffed it into the backpack. "Stupid, stupid, Time Lord. The jelly babies, the cricket ball… Of course it was misdirection. The Auton never wanted to kill us, it wanted to direct us away from something."

With that, he pulled the pack onto his shoulder and ran off into the museum. "Martha! Where are you?"

Hidden in the shadows of his viewing station, the figure watched with malicious pleasure as the Doctor dashed through the halls, calling out to his companion. "Martha! Martha, can you hear me? Martha!"

"Oh, Doctor, she can't hear you," the figure chuckled, his eyes glowing with menace. "You've let her get too far away. Soon she'll be gone, and then it'll just be you, all alone."

He ran a hand over his neat little beard and a sinister grin crossed his face. "And when you're alone? You'll lose. And then, my dear Doctor, then you will regenerate for me!"

Unaware of her friend's desperate search, Martha was heading back to where she'd left the Doctor, hoping he'd be able to help her with her latest predicament.

"'Little metal bracelet', he said. 'Wibbly wobbly writing,' he said." She held up her wrist and examined the bracelets she'd found. "I've found three so far… in twenty minutes. How am I supposed to know which is which?"

Suddenly, she became aware of a gentle skittering noise from behind her. Quickly she raised her bat and turned around. "Who's there? Show yourself!"

Seconds later, she immediately regretted her demand as, from atop a display case which held a stone angel covering its eyes, a monstrous spider came scuttling into view. Its eyes were glowing bright red, its hairy legs twitched with anticipation and venomous slime oozed from its sharp fangs.

"Whoa!" Martha gasped, almost dropping the bat in shock. "Great. I hate spiders."

With a deep throated hiss, the spider began to crawl down the display case towards her.

"Get back! I'm warning you!" Martha yelled, holding the bat up over her head. "I have a bat and I'm not afraid to use it!"

The spider snarled again, making Martha back up but still she kept a grip on the bat. "Think I'm scared of a great big spider? I've lived in student housing! I've faced worse than…" She tailed off as she heard another hiss behind her, quickly followed by another. "…worse than…"

Despite her instincts, she slowly turned around… and sure enough, four more big spiders were crawling towards her with murderous intent, trapping her in the middle! "Um, Doctor?"

Oh dear, what a scary situation for Martha! Will the Doctor make it in time?
