A/N: Here it is! The final chapter! So sorry for taking this long. A lot of things have happened the past few months which forced me to put my writing on hold for a bit.

Fuhrer Mustang:

Chris could not stop smiling as she watched the inauguration ceremony happening in front of her. Roy was standing on a platform in formal military attire with his right hand raised while Riza stood beside him. Behind them, the rest of his subordinates stood grinning for the cameras. Her heart swelled with pride as she watched him take the oath, repeating the words uttered by the Chief Justice.

I, Roy Mustang, solemnly swear that I will devote my life to the advancement and prosperity of Amestris. As Fuhrer, I will uphold and defend the laws of this country. I will also protect and preserve, with all of my power, the rights and freedom of the people of this country.

Chris pulled out a handkerchief and discreetly dabbed at the tears beginning to form in her eyes. She still couldn't quite believe this day had finally come! It still felt like a dream… one that she was going to wake up from any moment now. Who would have thought that all those years of hard work and countless sacrifices would finally pay off?

Her little grand-niece, however, was more interested in her toy pony than what was going on a few feet away from her. Sitting on Chris's lap, she quietly played by herself while her father gave a rousing speech to the crowd. Using a toy brush, she meticulously brushed the pony's hair over and over with the same careful precision that her mother used when cleaning her firearms. Finally, she turned towards Chris with a very serious look on her adorable face and whispered, "Grandma… I'm bored."

"It's almost over, sweetie. Just a little longer and then we can go get ice cream like I promised," she whispered back. The little girl nodded before turning her attention back to her toy. Not even a minute later, there was a thunderous applause as Roy finished his speech. Grinning proudly, he turned towards them and almost immediately, her grand-niece scrambled off her lap and straight into her father's arms. Roy gently scooped her up and kissed her on the cheek just as Riza joined them. Chris smiled as she watched the new First Family wave to the cheering crowds.

This was a moment she would cherish for the rest of her life.

Later that evening...

The ballroom at the Fuhrer's mansion was packed with officials, foreign diplomats, and other dignitaries along with their spouses celebrating the inauguration. Chris was quite impressed with the guest list as she recognized many famous faces amongst the crowd. I guess this is to be expected given the occasion, she thought as she scanned the room for a place to rest her feet. Spying an empty chair nearby, she quickly made her way there and sat down. Almost immediately, a waiter was standing in front of her.

"Care for a hors d'oeuvre, Ma'am?" he asked, holding out a tray.

"Hmm? Oh yes, please. Thank you," she replied, taking the napkin he offered and picking up an appetizer. After the waiter left, she took a bite before putting it down and began silently observing the festivities around her. A live band was playing on a stage nearby but it was nowhere near loud enough to drown out all the conversations happening near her. She smirked while she thought how tonight would have been the perfect night for intelligence gathering. With so many tongues loosened by the endless flow of alcohol something interesting was bound to slip out sooner or later. However, Roy had specifically instructed that she and her girls just relax and enjoy the night and one should always listen to the Fuhrer's orders.

Then again, old habits die hard.

She nudged her chair over a few inches so she could eavesdrop on a drunk general nearby. The man was bragging to a group of people about how he always knew that Roy was destined for greatness ever since he first met him a decade ago. She snorted. You and every other sycophant in this room, she thought to herself.

Suddenly, the music stopped and a male voice came over a loudspeaker.

"Ladies and Gentlemen... Please welcome our guests of honor: the Fuhrer and First Lady!"

A pair of large doors swung open and Chris immediately heard several gasps followed by excited chatter around her when Roy and Riza walked in. Roy looked handsome, as usual, in a black tuxedo with his hair gelled back. Riza, meanwhile, looked radiant in a red silk gown trimmed with gold. Her jewelry, rumored to be a gift from Emperor Yao, sparkled like fireworks with every step she took.

Chris watched in amusement as people quickly began stumbling all over each other in their rush to be the first to congratulate the couple. She had to admit, Roy and Riza were doing a rather impressive job handling the crowd. Riza in particular was never the talkative type so to see her smile and converse with complete strangers was out of the ordinary.

The First Couple slowly made their way around the room, thanking people for their support and well wishes. They were about halfway through when the band began playing a vaguely familiar song. Both Roy and Riza turned towards the band in confusion before smiling at some sort of hidden joke. Chris looked over to where they were looking and saw Rebecca Catalina, Riza's best friend, standing next to the band with a smirk on her face. Suddenly, it clicked in Chris's mind where she heard the song before: it was Roy and Riza's wedding song.

Still smirking, Roy politely excused himself from the conversation he was just in and headed towards the dance floor with Riza. As soon as they began dancing, the room appeared to grow silent as all the guests gathered around the dance floor to watch them. However, they seemed to barely notice the crowd. Instead, their eyes were only on each other as they glide effortlessly across the floor in time to the music. Chris couldn't help but smile when she saw Roy whisper something into Riza's ear, making her blush. Public displays of affection were a rare sight between those two due to military regulations so it was nice to finally see them acting like a normal couple.

When the song finally ended, all the guests began clapping, bringing Roy and Riza back from their little world. Afterwards, more couples began making their way onto the dance floor to join them. First came Rebecca and Jean Havoc, the First Couple's new heads of security. Next was Mei Chang, Xing's ambassador to Amestris, and Alphonse Elric followed by Winry Elric dragging a reluctant Ed. Chris stifled a laugh as she watched Ed clumsily lead his wife through a foxtrot which ended almost as soon as it began when he accidentally stepped on her foot.

The chair next to Chris suddenly moved and she turned to see Fuhrer Grumman sitting down next to her.

"Beautiful night isn't it?" he said, looking around the room.

"Very," she answered. "You did a great job organizing this."

He chuckled. "All I did was give advice on the invite list and the flowers. Everything else was handled by someone else."

Chris smiled inwardly at the obvious lie. Roy had complained to her about how the old man pretty much commandeered the inauguration planning from the start, saying how he wanted it to be a spectacular event worthy of the history books. It was probably pretty safe to assume that there was a lot of complicated negotiations between him and Riza to make sure the inauguration didn't end up resembling a circus.

"So how have you been?" she asked, changing the subject. "You haven't been by the bar lately and the girls were starting to worry."

Grumman chuckled. "I've been...busy. There were a lot of loose things that needed tidying up before I stepped down. Complicated matters that I didn't want to have to burden my grandson-in-law with when he took over."

Part of her wanted to ask what these matters were but she knew better than to pry. Grumman was a very secretive man and Chris was certain there were many things about him that she rather not know. So instead she asked, "So what are you going to do now that you're retired?"

Grumman leaned back against the chair and smiled. "I'm not really sure. Maybe travel for a bit, take up some new hobbies, and spend some time with my great-granddaughter. You know...enjoy whatever little time I have left in this world." Just as he finished, the band began playing a new song. He held out his hand to her. "Care to dance?"

Chris shook her head. "Thank you but I think I'm going to step outside for some air instead."

"Oh," said Grumman, seemingly disappointed. "Well then, allow me to accompany you-," he began but another soldier interrupted him.

"Fuhrer Grumman! There's a call for you from a Miss Sherman. She says it's urgent."

Grumman frowned. "Looks like there are still a few things that need my attention," he sighed. "Excuse me, Madame."

Chris watched the old man disappear into the crowd with his aide before getting up and navigating her way out of the ballroom. The cool night air greeted her when she stepped outside onto the terrace. Rummaging inside her purse, she pulled out a cigarette and proceeded to light it. Almost immediately, a male voice behind her spoke.

"You know, smoking is bad for your health."

She chuckled. "I've been doing this for almost forty years and you only start nagging now?" she asked, looking over her shoulder at her nephew.

Roy shrugged. "You said for years you were curious to see what I was going to do when I became Fuhrer. It would be a shame for you to die before you can see everything." She laughed.

"Please. Like I'm going to just keel over and die now that you've reached your goal. I'm made of stronger stuff than that. After all, I had to raise you all by myself. Contrary to what the media reports are saying, you were not an easy child to take care of."

"Fair enough," he smirked. They walked to the edge of the terrace together and stared out at the gardens in silence.

"So... enjoying the celebration?" Roy eventually asked. She nodded absent-mindedly.

"It's entertaining."

"But...?"

"I dunno," she sighed, blowing a long trail of smoke. "Guess I'm just exhausted. Having to smile for the cameras all day does get tiring." Roy laughed.

"You should talk to Riza about that. She was complaining earlier about how her jaw hurt from smiling so much for the cameras. It actually reached the point where she contemplated building a reputation as a cold, bitchy First Lady so she wouldn't have to smile all the time."

Now it was Chris's turn to laugh. "So what's stopping her?"

"Well...for starter's it's a bad PR move. People have an image of what the First Lady should be and Ice Queen is definitely not it. Plus, we've been in the public eye long enough for people to know that she isn't really like that."

"That's too bad. It would have been interesting seeing a First Lady with some sass."

"I'll be sure to pass that info on to her," Roy replied with a grin.

"Pass what to me?" asked a voice behind them. They turned and saw Riza walking towards them.

"'Oh Madame thinks you should act more like Major General Armstrong during your tenure as First Lady," Roy replied nonchalantly.

"I did not say that!" Chris snapped. "I just said it would be nice if you added some personality into the role of First Lady."

Riza grinned. "You mean be more than a walking coat hanger?"

"Well I wouldn't put it that bluntly..."

Riza laughed. "Don't worry. I won't be sitting idly around looking pretty. We already have a stacked itinerary of events for the upcoming months so I'll be quite busy."

"Just make sure you two don't kill yourselves working," Chris warned. "This new job is going to be a lot more stressful than what you're used to."

"We know," Roy replied. "However, our goal hasn't changed and we're prepared to do whatever it takes to secure a better future for Amestris."

"Grandfather has already begun implementing some of the policy changes we were planning on doing so a lot of the initial groundwork has already been laid out," Riza added. "However, there's still a lot of work left to do to change this country for the better." Roy nodded in agreement.

"Anyway, it's getting late..." Roy held out his hand to Riza. "Shall we go back in? I suspect Rebecca is probably tearing her hair out wondering where we disappeared to." Riza laughed.

"I doubt it. She and Havoc were having a private moment behind the ice sculpture so I'm pretty sure they didn't notice we slipped out."

"You two go on ahead. I'd join you in a minute," Chris mumbled while she took another drag from her cigarette.

"You sure?" Roy asked.

"Yes. I'll be fine," she said, shooing them off. She watched them walk back inside before turning back towards the gardens. Sighing a little, she dug into her purse again and pulled out a small photo of Jeremy and Angela holding a baby Roy. She stared fondly at the photo, remembering how happy they were when Roy was born and the crazy hopes and dreams they had for their only child.

"Well Brother, " she whispered, looking up at the stars. "Roy's Fuhrer. Just as you had hoped. Never really thought that would happen did you? You and Angela must be so proud of what he's accomplished." The stars simply twinkled in response. She smiled before turning back towards the mansion. Carefully tucking the photo back into her purse, she put out the remainder of her cigarette and headed back to join the party.
