Chapter 12
"Hey big bro! what are you making" Sarah asked while curiously peering over her brother's shoulder trying to get a glimpse of what he was doing, Corey had his sleeves rolled up as he was vigorously stirring some cake mix in a bowl, a recipe book was lying open on the counter, turned to the the page detailing how to make a chocolate cake. "Chocolate cake, I'm making it for Abby" A cheeky grin appeared on Sarah's face. "Oh, I see, learning to cook for your future wife eh?."
Corey's body jolted with shock, almost dropping the bowl, his face turned bright red with embarrassment. "W-Wife? d-don't be silly we've only just started going out!" Sarah began cackling while holding her sides. "You should see your face right now, it's priceless!" Corey managed to calm himself down and adopted a more stern expression. "Actually I lost a bet" Sarah raised an eyebrow at him. "Seriously?"
"I would've made it for her anyway, if she asked of course"
Once Corey finished stirring the batter he noticed his sister eyeing the spoon, the leftover batter that stuck to the it looked and smelled very tasty, he moved it from left to right in front of him and sure enough her eyes followed it. "Here, you can lick the spoon." Sarah swiftly grabbed the spoon from his hand. "Yay! thanks big bro" Corey chuckled happily " Well you looked like you were about to start drooling if I didn't let you" Sarah looked at her brother with an embarrassed pout. "Was not!" Sarah spun around with a huff before happily licking the spoon clean. Corey poured the batter into the baking tray and slid it into the oven. "This is gonna take awhile" Sarah placed the spoon down on the bench before grabbing her handbag and heading to the door. "I'm going out for a while bro, I'll be back later"
"Ok, be careful alright"
Corey ran his fingers over the words in the cookbook as he scanned it, trying to make absolute sure he didn't miss any steps. "You've been awful quiet today is something wrong?" Corey thought, Magus usually eavesdrops on his conversations, a lot! usually to offer his snarky opinion on things. "Hmm? oh right... I just felt somewhat calmer watching you and your sister interact, it reminds me of better days"
"Is that so?"
After a while Corey had taken the cake out of the oven to begin decorating it, as he was about to finish he heard a knock at the door, he walked over and answered it, he was met by Abigail, standing there with a beaming grin on her face, fidgeting excitedly on the spot. "Hey! Sarah told me you were baking me something"
Corey sighed and palmed his face in his hand. "Damn it Sarah I was gonna surprise her" Magus rolled his eyes. "I'll leave you two alone" Corey glanced at Abigail through the gap in his fingers, she was still fidgeting restlessly, struggling to contain her excitement. "Come on in Abby I just need to add one more thing"
Abigail was sitting at the table tapping her foot on the ground, waiting for Corey to finish. "Alright! all finished" Corey proclaimed, he brought the cake over to her, she was almost drooling at the sight of the delicious looking cake but was struck with surprise the moment she saw the decorations, it was a happy looking caricature of her face drawn with a mix of different different coloured frosting, a big love heart was drawn around it, she looked up at Corey who was sheepishly scratching his chin. "Is it too much? I know its silly but I-" Abigail grabbed him by the collar and yanked him down towards her. "Whoa Ab-" she silenced him with a kiss, although he was shocked at how sudden it was he closed his eyes and relaxed into it, the moment their lips parted she looked into his eyes. "It's wonderful! I couldn't have asked for anything better!" Corey blushed at how beautiful her expression was before pulling back a chair and sitting down. "Well, dig in Abby!"
"Yes sir!"
Abigail had eaten as much as she could before she slumped back in her chair. "That, was, amazing!" Corey picked up her plate, as well as the leftovers of the cake. "I'll clean this up for you" her eyes followed him as he placed the leftovers in the fridge and started to wash the dishes. "Wait a minute! I'll help you with those" Abigail shot up and hurried over to him. "Oh? but I thought you hated doing this kind of stuff" Corey said with a smirk.
"I don't really hate it...I just, don't want people to assume I have to cook and clean just because I'm a girl, besides..." Abigail grabbed a soapy cloth and started to wash the dishes beside him. "I tricked you into making the cake for me, it's the least I can do" Corey placed a loving hand on her shoulder. " I would've done it for you anyway Abby"
Corey sighed before smiling gently as he noticed the other pair of hands washing dishes beside his. "It actually feels really nice to cook for someone else for a change, back in the city I pretty much just cooked for myself, it was either that or eat junk food all the time."
Corey's expression shifted to one of irritation as he recalled his days working at Joja. "Working at that cesspool of a company Joja was already unhealthy enough..." Abby felt a slight prick in her heart and her pace lessened as she scrubbed the dishes. "So... you were always alone? what about your friends? or family?"
"My friends? I never really had the time to spare for them, so we eventually drifted apart, as for my family, Mom and Dad are workaholics just like I was and Sarah was busy with school, still, we kept in touch though" Abby felt bad for him, the discomfort was evident on her face.
"But coming here was the greatest decision I've ever made, I made a lot of wonderful memories here, and best of all..." Corey turned to look at her. "I met you Abby, you are the best thing that has ever happened to me."
Abigail turned bright red, her ears felt as if they were on fire. "S..So are you" she said nervously
Corey leant over and gently kissed her on the forehead. "So don't feel guilty over tricking me into baking a cake, OK? one simple cake is a small price to pay for all the happiness you've given me." Abigail's spirit lifted immensely, her grin was as bright as the sun."Ohoho! you're gonna regret that mister! because I'm gonna have you cook me all sorts of stuff now" Abigail picked up the pace, giddly washing the dishes while humming the tune of her favorite theme song.
"That's the girl I know and love"
After the two were finally finished, there was a knock on the door, Corey walked over to answer it and was met with a very out of breath Sam. "Co- Corey! d- dude! its great news, its... oh my lungs..."
"Sam, relax and take a deep breath" Abigail peered over Corey's shoulder at the exhausted Sam. "Oh, hey Abby, great, you're here too."
"What's this great news Sam?"
"It's Dad! he's back"
