Chapter Twelve
"Sesshoumaru! Sesshoumaru can you hear me?" It was all a blur, there was yelling and screaming going on around him. Alarms were going off, sirens could be faintly heard, but the very man who was being called out to could not fixate on a single voice. His chest burned like the very fires of hell and it was hard to focus his mind. When sudden pressure was applied to his chest, his blurry eyes peeled wide open and everyone went deathly silent when a blood curdling scream burst from his bloody lips. "Sesshoumaru, please don't move! I'm trying to help you!"
"I can't...I can't..." The fallen lawyer couldn't put a sentence together, arms flailing as he tried to grasp reality once more.
"Inuyasha, hold him down."
"But,"
"Do as I say my son!" The younger Takahashi boy leaned over his older brother to pin him down.
"Let me go!" Sesshoumaru bore pained golden eyes up at a younger pair, begging for his arms to be released.
"Kachan,"
"This has to be done." Izayoi ripped some more of her skirt material, pressing it heavily over the chest wound. "Sesshoumaru, listen to me!" The man in question tried to focus, but it was so bloody hard when it hurt so much. "You need to try and keep still or else..." Izayoi just couldn't finish as her eyes welled up, but she quickly grasped hold of her emotions as she needed to remain calm. This was her profession after all. Not that she ever thought she'd witness a day where one of her own children's lives was now in grave danger.
"It hurts!"
"I know..."
"Where's the bloody ambulance?" Inuyasha yelled, his patience growing thin. He could hear the sirens, it was like they were right outside, but refused to come in.
"Patience my child."
"Patience? He's bleeding to death!" At those words, even in his muddled up mind, Sesshoumaru understood Inuyasha entirely. Fear gripped at his very soul in an instant and once more he began to thrash about.
"Sesshoumaru-sama, Sesshoumaru-sama can you hear me?" Inuyasha had moved away, his strength was no match for his flailing brother, but all stopped when Rin's angelic voice seemed to be reaching the lawyer when she cupped his face in her small hands. "Sesshoumaru-sama I know it hurts, it must hurt so very much, but you need to stay still."
Golden orbs peeled open once more, hazily gazing into beautiful brown ones, filled with love and absolute fear for him. "Rin..."
"I'm here." The young woman stroked his cheeks, smearing some of the blood he'd been coughing up. "I'm always going to be here for you Sesshoumaru-sama."
"Rin?" His vision began to blur and it was getting hard to breathe.
"Sesshoumaru-sama, stay with me." Brown orbs welled up with tears when golden orbs rolled back. "Stay with me!" Rin yelled, a sob breaking forth as she placed her bloodied hands over her face when his eyes closed. Kagome was at her side in an instant, holding her close as Izayoi began to perform CPR on her eldest child.
"Somebody get some help!" Inuyasha bellowed as he placed his arms around his wife and Rin, all three looking on helplessly.
[Two Weeks Later]
"Has there been any change?"
"The doctor's say he should be waking up soon."
"You said that over two hours ago Kachan."
"He has been in an induced coma Inuyasha, so it's going to take time."
"Yeah but,"
"Why Inuyasha, are you worried for your brother?" The knowing mother smiled at her son who scratched awkwardly at the back of his neck.
"No, not really, its just..."
"Just what?"
"Well the kids miss his broody face. I mean I seriously don't understand why, maybe its because Kagome has been moping about as well. Then there is the issue with Rin who has..." A groan interrupted Inuyasha when he and his mother turned there gaze to watch with baited breath as golden eyes blinked open for the first time in two weeks.
"How do you feel?" Izayoi questioned, relief flooding her body when Sesshoumaru weakly squeezed her hand as she hadn't let go of it for the past two hours.
"Like someone's been jumping on my chest."
"Well that is to be expected, you went through quite a gruelling operation." When he tried to sit up in bed, black spots appeared instantly before his eyes and he hissed at the pain he'd caused himself.
"Take it easy you idiot, you need to rest." Inuyasha poured a glass of water for the lawyer, bringing the cup to his lips, allowing the man to drink, the cool liquid quenching his parched throat.
"What happened?"
"How much do you remember?" Izayoi questioned back.
"I was in court, Kouga and I were wrapping up the case and then there was a lot of commotion going on and then...Rin! Is she alright?"
"She's fine Sesshoumaru, you protected her by taking the bullet." The handsome man brushed his hand over his bandaged chest.
"From Rin's confession, Naraku seemed to have cracked. He did a hell of a lot of yelling and cursing and voiced a number of death threats before being tackled by security. He got loose, grabbed a guards gun and then..." Inuyasha paused as he gazed at his brother. "Well this is the result of that."
"During your time in your induced coma, two more bodies have been found." Sesshoumaru visibly gulped down the lump in his throat, already guessing who they might be. "Koura-san's body was found a week ago. She'd been disposed of in an alleyway, near a fish market." Izayoi quietly voiced, knowing that no matter the bad blood that occurred between Koura and Sesshoumaru, somewhere deep within him, he did care for her at one point.
"And the other?"
"It was Kagura, Naraku's lover." Inuyasha piped up. "There is speculation that she'd tried to leave him, she was found in a hotel room, looks like she'd been there a couple days." Inuyasha watched Sesshoumaru close his eyes. "There is speculation that the both of them have been shot by the same gun that killed Rin's friend."
"Where is Rin?" Sesshoumaru watched the two before him share a glance as they seemed hesitant to answer him. "You said she was safe, so why are you hesitating?"
"Rin's..." Inuyasha began but stopped when the door opened to reveal Kagome and his kids.
"Oniichan!" She yelled with relief, the kids all screaming for him as well, each jumping up and down as they wanted to be placed on the bed.
"Now, now you three, your Uncle needs his rest." All three made whining noises as they were ushered out of the room by their father, he promising they could visit again when he was a little better and bribed them with going to the cafeteria to get some ice cream.
"Oniichan, how do you feel?" Kagome was at Sesshoumaru's side in an instant, standing next to her mother-in-law.
"I'm sore, but I'll be alright."
"We were so worried about you." Kagome placed her hand over his and Izayoi's. "Okaasan hasn't left your side for a minute!" The young mother voiced with conviction, watching as golden orbs gazed up and over at the quiet older woman. "Ah, um, anyway, I'll let you get some rest. When you're up and about and out of hospital, Inuyasha, the kids and I would love to have you over for dinner...maybe even stay the night?" Kagome grinned when Sesshoumaru nodded. She gave a small wave as she exited the room.
"Have you really stayed by my side...all this time?"
"Where else am I going to be, but right here watching over you."
"Why?"
"For such a bright boy, you can be really slow Sesshoumaru. And your glare does not scare me." She pat him on the hand before brushing a lock of his hair behind his ear. "You know, I distinctly recall asking you not to worry me again, but there isn't much I can do about my silly children." She watched Sesshoumaru give off a slight smile.
"I've been so cruel to you, and yet through everything, you've stayed when my own father does not."
Izayoi let out a small sigh. "Your father is just as stubborn as you are, but don't think for a minute that he has not been worried about you. He's dealing with things in his own way, after all, he is linked to the very man that nearly killed you, so there is much to investigate."
"I guess..."
"And I will tell you over and over again until you become sick of hearing it." Golden eyes rose to look at her. "You and Inuyasha are my precious sons. I will do whatever is necessary to try and keep the both of you safe. I have failed this time, but throughout your recovery, I'll be at your side." She brushed her hand over his forehead. "You should get some rest, you've got quite a long way to go before you are fully recovered."
"Why won't you tell me about Rin?"
"She asked me to take care of you while she went away."
"Went away?" The lawyer repeated.
"Its not that she wanted to leave your side Sesshoumaru, but Rin is dealing with what has happened in her own way. Seeing you like that, it brought back all her memories on what happened to her friend. Though you have survived, seeing you there, covered in blood, it really did a number on her. She'll need some time to work through it all."
"Just tell me she's somewhere safe."
"Naraku is going away for life Sesshoumaru. Your determination, hard work and Rin's bravery did that. He cannot hurt either of you anymore." Izayoi watched the man visibly sigh in utter relief. "And yes, she's staying somewhere safe. She's with my sister, staying at her place which is quite close to Ozuna, Asakawa."
"I see..."
"My sister's a teacher." Recollection flashed within Sesshoumaru's eyes.
"I thought my sister's would be a good place for Rin. Its away from the hustle and bustle of a big city and there is plenty of open air for her to collect her thoughts. I talk to her everyday, giving her updates about you." Sesshoumaru nodded his head. "She's just taken up my sister's offer to begin home schooling. I also hear the local children love her."
"I'm glad she's doing well."
"Only Rin can truly answer that. I'd say she's trying to keep busy, in order to not constantly worry about a certain someone. Now get some sleep."
"Okaasan," Izayoi stopped dead in her tracks, misty eyes gazing back at him. "Thank you."
"I'll see you tomorrow."
When the door clicked closed, Sesshoumaru turned his eyes to look out at the sunset.
"Rin..."
[Three Months Later]
Sesshoumaru pulled his car into a familiar driveway, placing his car in park as he turned off the ignition. Getting out of the car, dressed in a pair of faded jeans, a plain white button down shirt and a pair of flip flops, the handsome businessman glanced over at the old home. In the distance he could hear waves crashing against the sandy beach. He'd not been here since he was a small boy.
"Are you sure you are well enough to go?" Izayoi worriedly questioned.
"Kachan will you relax," Inuyasha piped up as he too was standing on the footpath near where Sesshoumaru was idling in his car. "Its about time he gets back his girl."
"Inuyasha!" Izayoi began to admonish her youngest.
"Okaasan," Though it had been three months now since Sesshoumaru had started to call her that, it was still a surprise to hear it. "I need to do this."
"Shouldn't you have at least told her you were coming?"
"She might get scared and run."
"Sesshoumaru..."
"She's hesitant to return, wondering if things will change between us now that her past has been revealed. I'm going to her, to give her my answer."
"Just be safe on your trip. If you get tired, you make sure you rest. And please call us when you get to my sisters."
"Are you sure you want her as your mother Sesshoumaru, she worries a bloody lot." The older Takahashi boy watched as Izayoi smacked her youngest on the arm before telling him off for cursing, he watching as Inuyasha rolled his eyes.
"There is no one more fitting then she."
"Talk like that will make her cry you know."
"I know, but guess what?"
"What?"
"You've to deal with it."
"Oi!" Inuyasha yelled as Sesshoumaru pulled away watching the man flee in his car while he had to deal with his over emotional mother.
"Is that you Sesshoumaru-kun?" The lawyer jolted from his daydream to focus on Izayoi's sister who was standing on the porch.
"Its been quite some time."
"How are you?"
"Still recovering, but I'm doing a lot better."
"I'm glad to hear that." She watched her handsome nephew glance around and she instantly knew whom he was looking for.
"Rin-chan is down at the beach. You can either go in your car or take a walk by following that path. It shouldn't take you more then 30-40 minutes, if your up to a walk that is."
"A walk would be good." Sesshoumaru lightly bowed before heading off on the sandy footpath.
Sesshoumaru walked over a small mound and instantly stopped. The view was spectacular, but even more beautiful then the view was the sight before him. There in the distance was Rin, frolicking in the sand and ankle deep water at the shore as six children chased after her. She was dressed in a pair of small denim shorts and a white tank top. She was drenched from head to tow, the white tank becoming see through and beneath was the outline of a red bikini top.
The crisp sea breeze blew his white button down shirt and hair as Sesshoumaru started his walk down towards the oblivious young woman. As he drew closer and closer towards her, his heart began to pound within his ribcage. It had felt like an eternity as he walked towards her, but then suddenly he was merely metres away.
"Rin," Golden orbs watched her freeze in an instant. Slowly, ever so slowly, she turned to face him, big brown eyes widening at seeing him right in front of her very eyes. "Mitsuketa…" He watched a little smile grace her lips at how child-like that sounded.
"Rin-Oneechan, who's that?" A little girl voiced, hair in pigtails and big green eyes gazing innocently up at Sesshoumaru.
"This is..." Brown eyes wavered as Rin diverted her gaze from mesmerising golden orbs. "Actually I think its about time you all head home, its nearly dinner after all."
"But..."
"Go home." The six little kids scrambled away at Sesshoumaru's firm instructions.
"A tone like that will only scare them away Sesshoumaru-sama, you really shouldn't do that."
"Why should I be nice to them?"
"I don't know, maybe because they're children."
"Why won't you look at me?"
"Because I'm scared." Rin mumbled, her breath hitching when Sesshoumaru stepped closer to her. It was almost like she could feel his body heat radiating off him and seeping into her chilled bones.
"You are scared of me?"
"You know everything about me now. If things have changed between us..."
"Rin, whether you wanted it to happen or not, things have changed between us." Sesshoumaru watched her chew on her bottom lip and he bent down and picked up her towel, unfolded it and placed it around her shoulders. Finally those eyes glanced up to gaze at him. "There she is." Sesshoumaru brushed a thumb down her cool cheek. "How are you?"
"I...I'm okay."
"Yeah?"
"Mm!" Rin nodded, a little smile gracing her lips as she lifted her hand to rest it against Sesshoumaru's chest, right over where he was shot.
"And you?"
"I've been better."
"Is your recovery not going well?" And there was that familiar worry within her voice and eyes, just for him.
"I don't know what the past three months has been like for you, but for me, its been a long road to recovery. And although I've had a lot of people around me every step of the way...none of them were you Rin." He watched her chin tremble and her eyes water. "I've always found it hard to trust someone and since we met, you are the first one in a long time that I trust explicitly."
"Sesshoumaru-sama..."
"I'm sorry you were placed in danger."
"No! I made the choice to take the stand. I weighed the risks, but in the end I needed to be free of my past...and I needed you to know about it. Because you trust me so much, it was only right of me to do the same in return. I've been thinking about this day, of reuniting with you for so long that now its finally here and I just...I don't know what to say."
"Tell me whatever you feel."
"I want to come home!" Rin blurted out in an instant, eyes brimming with tears. "I want to always be with you, but I also like being here too. I've been learning so many things. I know I said I was happy to remain at your side, looking after the apartment and such, but I think I deserve more then that now. After everything that has happened, its time for me to do something for me now. I-Is that so wrong?"
"Its not wrong."
"Then why do I feel so messed up inside about it?"
"Because your main worry is whether or not I'm going to accept your decision."
"D-Do you?"
"I want Rin to do whatever she wants to do."
"Please be honest with me Sesshoumaru-sama."
"You've always put me first since the day I brought you home. Now its time for you to think about you." Those eyes broke from him, but his hand was at her chin, cupping it softly as he lifted her head to gaze up at him once more. "You wondered whether or not, at the end of this, everything would return to normal and I'd want you by my side."
"A-And?"
"I've never been good with expressing my feelings, you know that." He watched Rin give him a little knowing smile, completely agreeing with him. "Its taken me a long time to get to this stage, but you deserve to know."
"O-Okay..."
"For me, I only ever see you in my life." He listened to her exhale a shuddering breath. "I cannot even begin to think what my life would be like without you by my side. Whether you return to Tokyo with me, or stay here, my home is wherever Rin is."
"B-But your business..."
"You have sacrificed much for me over the years, I too can do the same for the one I love." He observed her place her hands over her mouth, she wanting desperately to keep her sobs at bay.
"Se-Sesshoumaru," The man in question tilted his head, eyes softening as she had dropped the honorific, her voice as soft and smooth as silk. "I...love...you." And the usual unemotional lawyer instantly melted at the heartfelt confession, a small smile gracing his lips as Rin dropped her hands from over her mouth, a thousand what smile breaking across her own. "I finally said it."
"Well you have said it before."
"True, but hopefully you now understand that its not because you saved me. I mean that was the beginning of my feelings for you, but over the years its just grown and grown, so much so that you are all I ever think about and I never want this feeling to ever go away."
"Rin...I..."
"I know." She watched his eyebrows furrow as she'd interrupted his moment. "Rin is all Sesshoumaru needs. I'm his family ne?"
Sesshoumaru closed his eyes for a moment, the setting sun streaming over his face as he thought over Rin's words. When he opened his eyes, he noticed a small little blush was creeping over her cheeks, he having caught her openly starring up at him.
"We'll do it properly."
"Eh? Do what properly?"
"Place you into my registry."
"R-Really?"
"Only if you want to." Rin's eyes widened. "Stay with me forever?"
"Hai!" Rin jumped up, arms around Sesshoumaru's shoulders as she thrust herself into his embrace, but the handsome man was ready for her, arms sliding around her slim body, not being able to miss the slight shudder that occurred when his warm fingers caressed her cool skin. Rin let off a slight giggle, feeling so unbelievably safe and warm as Sesshoumaru placed her back on her own feet, loving how she was tucked protectively into his side, one of his strong arms still wrapped around her as they gazed out over the ocean.
"Rin?"
"Mm?" She peered up at the man she loved, heart thumping in her chest when his unoccupied hand cupped her cheek, his beautiful golden orbs never once leaving hers.
"You've always said I was your saviour, but the truth is..." Sesshoumaru bent his head, breath mingling with Rin's as her lips had parted just as her eyes fluttered closed. "You have always been mine." And Sesshoumaru sealed his lips over Rin's just as the sun dipped below the horizon.
End.
