Hello there! So I realized that Rebecca Sugar (the creator of Steven Universe) had confirmed many things relating to the Gems and how they reproduce and grow up. Because many of these things go against what I have in my story, I will just simply keep the story as is. I started this very early on in the show anyways.

Also, Trigger warning: Suicide

The man was pacing the ship in worry.

He had never felt a fear like this. He was only a young shop keeper sent here to build Miss Rose Quartz a boat. She had good ties with the town, and she even offered him a lesson in how to design blueprints for his projects (he was more hands on). He thought he could help out a good friend, and a lovely woman, by helping out his town's most respected resident.

But then she brought others. Others that were…like her. But different. They had many problems that had effected the town before. He was a bit frightened when he had seen not only a Pearl Gem (they were known to have incredible fighting skills), but a Garnet Gem that was already taller than Rose herself. She had seen the large girl running around the town once or twice before Rose took her in, and she was so little compared to now. It's only been a few months. He gulped at how fast she grew. They always seemed to be scary.

He thought it best to not say anything, but to just continue working for Rose. He knew Rose would never put anyone in danger, she was highly trusted anyway. But he kept a steady eye on the other two Gems. Garnet in particular.

But then he had seen her, in all that chaos and fear with that, that thing (he has been wondering what that was since he seen it), jumping right at it and trying to save them. He wasn't sure what to think of her when he seen her get launched back to earth, surly horribly hurt. She was trying to save them, right?

A Garnet Gem? The hero of the day? The young man was, to say the absolute least, confused. He was confronted by Rose at one point, she had handed him a baby…a purple baby…he couldn't remember the details exactly, and then she took off.

He was now pacing the almost completed ship with a magical sleeping baby in his arms, not sure what to do.

"Hey, you alright there, son?" An older man had asked him after watching the man nearly loosing himself in confusion. The younger man stopped in his tracks, and looked at the gentleman before snapping himself out of his own mind and answering.

"Uhh, yeah…yeah, I'm fine. Sorry, sir." He answered. The older man raised an eyebrow, then chuckled lightly.

"I bet you are. Cute baby ya got there."

He looked down at the sleeping child in his arms, she was curled up against his chest in a nest of her own hair. He looked down at the gem in her chest, and sighed.

"Uh, thanks. But it's not mine. Miss Rose had given her to me to protect temporarily. I'm not entirely sure what to do with her for the time being."

The older gentleman had chuckled again. "Looks to me the kid just wants to be held. Lots a commotion for a little gal like her. Mind if I hold her?"

The other man shook his head and walked to the man, who was sitting on a small wooden crate, most likely filled with materials. "Not at all. Here she is."

He passed Amethyst to him, and the most she did was squirm before settling into his grubby arms. He looked at the child for a moment before smiling, his eyes shining. The younger man found this older man familiar somehow.

"An Amethyst Gem, ehh? I hear these little guys like to have a good time." He mumbled while running a dirty finger down the baby's arm, and lightly grasping her small hand. His thick beard mixed with the child's endless hair, creating quite a sight of hair. The older man was already hairy enough.

"Do they?" the young man asked.

"Yep. I mean, I've never done any research or anything on em, but ya hear things, y'know? This little girl seems like she'd be quite the catch. A gal that likes to celebrate over the sky bein' blue, then sleepin' in till the cows come home." He mumbled with a few chuckles along the way. The younger man can tell that the other gentleman is the kind of person that likes to talk and think about the good ol' times. Stories upon stories he could most likely tell from his experiences with almost everything.

"Yeah, she sure does seem like…something, anyway. Hey, sir, may I ask where this ship is planned to sail to?" The younger man asked in a gentle way, not wanting to upset his elder by invading his thoughts.

"What? You mean nobody told ya?"

"No, sir. I was just requested to help build the ship. I really only ask because it's a very small ship, not big enough to fit an entire crew on here, maybe 30 or so people, so I'm wondering where its destination is if it's such a small load."

"Why, the New World of course!" The older man exclaimed, nearly making the other man jump.

"The…New World, sir?" He cautiously questioned.

"America! The Colonies' little retreat, the Queen's runaway fleet! Whatever you wanna call it!" He nearly shouted with a smile. The younger man looked nervously at the child, who he didn't want woken up. But she hardly stirred.

"The ship's destination is America? Why is that? Would the States even allow this ship to enter their territory?"

"Oh, I dunno. I would assume they are headed for land that has little population. Some place near a beach, or between hills perhaps. Word has it Rose knows of a temple her people used to live in over there. The lady seems to have ties all over the world in one way or another." He explained while slightly rocking the baby. She was kicking out a little bit from a dream of hers. She really was a cute kid. Once you get past the fact that she's purple, and could very well destroy an entire town with magic when she's older.

"But, hey, I'm just an old man that works off a speculation and the guesses of others. You'd think a preacher like me would preach the truth…But I suppose everyone believes what they want to believe. Sadly." He quietly stated. He looked at the child in a distant, sad way. He seemed almost hurt looking at the baby. No, guilty.

The young man finally figured out why he looked so familiar. He was one of the preachers that hung up posters of what to do when confronted by a Garnet Gem, and would stand outside for hours yelling and preaching about how sinful and horrible the Garnet Gems are. It had also occurred to him that the reason he felt so nervous around Garnet was...because of his preaching.

"You…Your Mr. Johnston, one of the town preachers, right?" The young gentleman asked.

"That's me, alright. Although, I've sort of given up preaching about the Gems. I've…sort of come to realize that I misunderstood them." He said in a low, quiet tone.

"Misunderstood them, sir?"

The older man was quiet for a while, looking down at the baby in his hands. He smiled, though his eyes showed sadness. The younger man stood there, waiting for his reply. He almost felt like the man would never answer.

"Did you ever hear about the murder of my wife a couple months ago?"

The younger man's eyes widened, and his mouth opened, but he closed it again, in fear he may say something foolish. He simply swallowed, then shook his head.

"No, sir, I don't believe I did. I'm so sorry for your loss."

"Well, thank you, but the pain is…never gunna go away. We were together for over twenty years, we were. A lovely little lady she was. She was such a spitfire, but y'know what? I loved that about her. A strong woman is my kinda woman, y'know? She was my everything. A sad old man like me ain't got nothing but love and lies to keep him afloat.

One day…I was out in town, spewing my usual slop of rumors everywhere, when I heard someone scream, and an entire crowd of people started forming about a block away. It was a cloudy day. I walked over to the crowd to see what the fuss was, and felt my shaky old knees buckle. Wouldn't ya know it, there was my wife, lying there with a bullet in the head. My world crashed down, it did. I fell on top of her and cried. You ever seen an ol' man like me cry? I sure as hell never did. There's a first for everything, ain't there.

I thought for sure my life was over that day. A homicide. I guess some poor bastard decided it best to kill a woman and take her fancy things before running away with his damn tail between his legs then to actually make a damn man of himself and get a damn job. Cowards like that make me so mad. Men who are more of a bitch then a woman need to be shot on sight. Can't stand 'em."

The younger man stared at the other while he talked. He hardly ever looked up, but just kept staring at the baby in his arms, the child unaware of the tragedy the world carries.

The man paused, took a swig of his beer he had beside him, and chuckled with sadness.

"I was depressed as hell over it for a good while. Couldn't even get out of my house to preach. I just sat there, moping like a man that traveled the heavens and found no God in sight. I sure was broken. Then, one day, I got a message from a young fellow, younger then yourself, sayin' that the man that killed my wife was beaten to death. I was above the damn clouds at that point. I thought, "Damn right! Hope you like burnin' in Hell ya damn coward!"

I was so damn happy to hear my wife's death wasn't completely in vein. Why, I was so happy, I gave that kid a big hug! Probably scared him I bet! Then I asked him who done it. Who gave the bastard justice? But the kid didn't know. He just tol' me to go down to the ol' pub to talk to the authorities who know who done it. I didn't even get my shoes on, I jus' ran down the street as fast as I could, didn't even care I cut my foot on a rock, just kept runnin an' runnin'. I ran inside the pub to see the chief of the authorities sittin' there drinkin' a beer. I ran up to him an' asked him who done it. Y'know what he said?"

The younger man was startled for a moment when asked a question. He had zoned out after a while of hearing the man talk. He truly did find what he was saying interesting, it's just he was standing there for a while, and felt like he should be doing something other than that. He blinked at the man.

"Uhh, what did he say?" He nervously asked.

The man chuckled, the happiness spreading across his face again.

"He said that the Garnet Gem did it!" He yelled. This time, he woke up Amethyst, and she started fussing.

"Oh darn, Sorry 'bout that sweetie. Here, you can have her back." The old man gave the crying child over to the young man, and she still fussed. He tried rocking her back and forth, and he tried to shush her, but she just kept crying.

"Here, give her some a this."Mr. Johnston said while handing the young man his bottle of beer. He wetted his finger with the alcohol, and dabbed it in the child's mouth. She squirmed over the infiltration, but then she started to settle when her gums numbed, and she calmly sucked on his finger like it was a mother's breast. He turned back to Mr. Johnston.

"Wait, so…are you saying that a Garnet Gem killed him?"

"That's right. Not just any Garnet Gem, but that kid that follows Rose around! Witnesses saw her get mad when the man tried to shoot her in the head, same as my wife, though I guess those bullets ain't thick enough to take out a magical being, and she beat him so bad he bled to death. They figured out the connection with my wife, and let me know. And do you know what?" He asked.

"What?" the young man asked.

Mr. Johnston chuckled. "Why, I love those Gems now!"

"Oh…I, I suppose, huh. Did she, Garnet, get in any trouble or…?"

"Naw, not really. Everyone decided it was for the best. Nobody told Rose or any other of those Gems. Once everyone realized who the bastard was and what he was doin' to innocent women, they couldn't be happier that the powerhouse of a kid took him out. I couldn't have been happier either. Why, I quickly ran all over town, rippin' down those damn posters I helped put up about those rules over Garnet Gems." He proclaimed in a very proud way.

"But…you do know she did it out of anger right? She didn't do it for justice or anything. Sounds to me she just got really mad and took it out on him. I mean, I'd be mad to if someone tried to shoot me, but I'm just saying that that could have been anyone she killed. All they had to do was make her mad." The young man quietly stated.

Mr. Johnston nodded. "That's true. But you know what? Instead of surpressin' it or runnin' away, she took her anger out on someone who rightfully deserved it. It taught me that just because Garnet Gems may be angry and violent, it doesn't mean they can't…well…save the day."

Mr. Johnston leaned into the space in between him and the young gentleman.

"Ya don't gotta have a good attitude to be a good hero."

The young man didn't say anything. He absorbed his elder's words. It made sense. He could see some holes in it, but they weren't big. He looked back down at the now sleeping Amethyst gem, who was now weakly biting his finger, and smiled lightly.

"That makes sense, I suppose." He lightly mumbled, unsure of what else to say.

Mr. Johnston sat back, his proudness beaming.

"I'm glad. Don't be scared of what ya don't understand, son. Or you'll very well end up a sad old man that can't do nothin' other than preach lies and poison the minds of future generations. Thanks for listening to me drag on and on. It really feels good to know that a young man like yourself might actually use some good advice from me. It gives me a satisfactory feelin' I haven't felt in years. Makes me believe this ol' man can die proud."

The young man smiled at him. He felt like he was seeing the world with new eyes. Seeing it for what it was. He thought of Garnet in a new light, he thought of her putting her life on the line for everyone, despite her anger.

"Hey, kid. Could you do me a favor?"

He snapped out of his thoughts and looked at the man.

"Of course. What is it?"

"Could you go fetch me another bottle of Rum from the small cellar inside the ship? The baby took the rest a mine."

The young man grinned at him, suddenly admiring this old man. "Of course."

He turned his back on Mr. Johnston, and headed down the stairs into the small cellar, unaware that the old man had pulled out a gun from his large coat, stuck it in his mouth, and then pulled the trigger.

"Miss Quartz, where exactly are you taking us again?" Pearl had asked after they walked into the woods for about an hour. Garnet remained completely quiet while Pearl and Rose talked about potential danger heading their way. Rose looked up from her large book she was reading, and looked att eh skinny Gem.

"We are heading into the center of this region we are in. it says here in this book that the Diamond Gems preferred to perform their rituals in the center of islands and vast regions because it allowed them to scout out sacrifices and gain much control of the land they were on. So I am taking you and garnet to the center of this land in hopes that we may find something."

Pearl's stomach began to turn when Rose had mentioned "sacrifices". She was not one to lose her lunch over violent things, she was a Crystal Gem after all. But the thought that there are beings in this world that could do such horrible things to others…it frightened her. She stopped in her tracks.

Both Garnet and Rose stopped to look at her in confusion.

"Pearl, are you alright? What's wrong?" Rose asked, weary of how the girl was shaking and holding herself close.

"I…I don't think I can do this…." She forced herself to say. Her anxiety pinned down her muscles and even her voice to some extent. It frightened her beyond belief. She didn't want to be messing with these people. With these gems. With these monsters.

Rose bit her lip. Oh god, I never even thought this could scare her that badly.

She closed the book for a moment and walked to Pearl. She embraced the shaking girl in a snug hug.

"It's okay, Pearl. I won't let anything happen to you, I promise. The Diamond gems are so lost in what they believe. They think death and bloody pain are the way to go, they don't know any better, nor do they choose to think any different. You are stronger than them Pearl. You are so much stronger in your beliefs and customs. I won't lie to you and say that you won't see things you won't like, but I will tell you that you are stronger. You are a Crystal Gem. Right Garnet?"

The dark pink Gem gave a single nod. But it didn't help Pearl's overwhelming anxiety.

I…I still don't want to do it…I can't do this Rose…I…I want to go home….I want my dad…"

Rose sighed. This wasn't going to be easy. But she couldn't blame the child for being scared. She was, after all, a child. A child that has been through Hell and back and managed to keep her cool until now.

"Pearl, they are the ones that killed your father." Garnet said.

Both girls turned to look at her.

"I…I know. What exactly is your point, Garnet?" Pearl asked.

"So find them and kill them."

"Garnet! How could you say that? You know revenge is not the way to go!" Rose gasped.

Garnet walked up to Pearl, and lightly stepped in front of her to block Rose out momentarily.

"Pearl, do you hate the Amethyst Gem that killed your father?" She asked.

"I…Of course I do. You know this."

"Do you hate the Diamond Gems that put her up to it?"

"Y…yes…yes I do."

"Well, use that. Think about how mad you get when you think about what they did to you and your family. Does it make you angry?"

Pearl thought back to the good moments with her father, how he taught her about the Asian culture and its unique fighting styles and weapons, and how he would teach her about the mapping of the world. Then she thought of seeing her father hanging there dead from those…those damn monsters. It really did start to anger her. She…She wanted them dead. She wanted to kill them. The anger sent fire through her once frozen joints, and she glared at Garnet.

"Yeah, it does make me angry."

"Garnet! What on earth do you think you're doing? Don't corrupt her mind with indecent thoughts! I've taught you not to get angry!" Rose exclaimed. Garnet turned back to Rose.

"I know you did. And I thank you for your help. But what is better? Having Pearl frozen by fear, or fueled by anger? One seems more motivated then the other."

Rose couldn't argue much with that. So she sighed, and opened her book back up to continue their journey. "Just please don't get carried away. Just remember that this is all speculation."

"We won't." Garnet simply said.

As Rose turned around to continue walking, she didn't notice Garnet giving Pearl a reassuring hug.

They were all in this together, and Garnet knew that.

Ayyy another chapter! Sorry this took so long, I've been so busy this summer, its crazy! It's nuts I actually found time to write even this out. So I'm sorry if this chapter doesn't really bring the "oomf" Some of you may want out of this story, but its still important! The idea of this chapter is to show what the humans think of the Gems other then in the Gem's POV. I really wanted to show how development in the Gems (mainly Garnet) can affect them and their lifestyle. It's not just how the humans effect the Gems, but in many ways, they effect each other.

Anyways, How's about some review replys?

SpaceWonder368 - Thank you so much! I'm glad that you are enjoying it so far. Like I said, I really want this story to have a strong Mother to child vibe too it.

Applebucker77 - Yes, they did. In many flashback chapters, both Pearl and Rose try techniques to help her. But of course, you can't change who a person is.

Guest - voila! A new chapter!

Thank you all for sticking with the story so far! yall are beautiful and keep it comin! Have a good one!
