Chapter 12- Emotions never revealed

He reached the outdoor yard and saw exactly what he was expecting to see. Emily, was as usual sitting on the bench, flute in her hand and gaze fixed on the sky above as she played her favorite tune on the flute. Jayden saw her from the back, her golden curls shining and he smiled to himself.

He went towards her and sat down beside her, gaze fixed on her. Her eyes were closed and she was definitely thinking something. Jayden, in that moment wanted to stop time, to snatch away all the things troubling her and to run away with her somewhere serene and beautiful just like her.

Once Emily was done playing her flute she looked straight and put her flute down. Her eyes opened and some tears rolled down her cheeks. She hadn't noticed Jayden's presence till now.

"So beautiful", Jayden said slowly from besides her looking up at the night sky but mind still on her face.

Emily turned to her side and looked at Jayden. Her first reaction was a shock. Why was he here after what all he has done so far? Every word from his mouth that had hurt her?

But she noticed something different on his face today. It wasn't of a Jayden who is in a battlefield, or a Jayden who is practicing with his team, or a Jayden who is sitting with his friends. He was a Jayden who she was seeing for the first time. There was a calmness on his face, equivalent to as if he was feeling guilty for something. There was a soothing expression on his face, a deep thinking in his mind and he was looking like a child staring into the universe and thinking of all the possibilities it offers, the dazzling range of imaginations, the hidden worlds it hide and the secrets that can be revealed.

Emily then again took a sigh. No way can she be mad or even a bit disappointed from this kind of Jayden.

"Yeah, it is", she replied herself looking at the sky.

Jayden and Emily both looked at the sky, silence engulfing them as both didn't know what to say. They were so quiet, the surrounding seemed perfect to both of them, it was better than thousands of words that can be exchanged. Warmth radiating from both the bodies, thousands question lingering their minds.

Jayden looked down and let out a smile before sighing.

"What?", asked Emily looking at him.

"Are you okay?", asked Jayden softly looking at her, innocence in his eyes.

"Yes, I am", Emily managed to say faking confidence she didn't have and again looking at the stars.

"Good", he replied.

"I am sorry", she said finally.

"Why?", asked Jayden incredulously.

Emily faced him again and replied, "For being a douchebag with Catherine before"

"Oh, it's okay", Jayden said looking at her again, "She's fine"

Emily nodded and again turned towards the sky. She released a sigh, she didn't know what to say now. Jayden looked at her and felt a deep pit form in his stomach. This girl was too frail at that moment.

"You know what Emily?", he asked slowly, barely speaking.

Emily again turned to face him and smiled.

"What?", she asked.

Jayden sighed and met her eyes before saying, "I used to sit here with Ji when I was a child and stare at this night sky"

Emily knew where this conversation was going and she smiled looking at him. Though the night was cool, there was a strange warmth there. A warmth they both felt in the company of each other. A strange familiarity Emily had felt for the first time. Jayden was baring his soul to someone. That night he had decided to shed his "leader" personality, to be a boy who has a beautiful life, who has emotions, who observes things but decides not to point them out, a boy who has dreams and has aspirations from life. He was letting his guard down. For a moment Emily felt like they were not Samurais, they were just two ordinary people sitting beneath five billion stars above head and enjoying the silence existing between them.

Jayden let out a small laugh remembering the moments he shared with Ji as a child and averted his gaze from her and continued," That was a long time ago, I didn't know I was gonna face such a dangerous life ahead"

He again looked at her, and moved closer to her. He looked down at her hand and Emily's gaze automatically followed. He took hold of her hand softly and Emily's heartbeat accelerated. He softly held her hand and using it pointed to the sky as both of their eyes turned towards the stars in front of them.

"You see that star, the one that is shining the brightest?", Jayden asked softly.

"It's beautiful", replied Emily admiring the beauty that Jayden was showing her.

"Ji used to say that he is my father", Jayden said softly dropping her hand and tears brimmed Emily's eyes. She knew Jayden missed his father a lot.

"I am sorry", she said softly keeping her own hand above Jayden's hand lying on the bench between them.

"It's okay! That was a long time ago. I used to think it's true, I used to sit here and watch it daily. I thought my father was watching me from above. I know he is always there. It provided me strength to work even harder", he said looking down, lips pursed.

Emily gulped and smiled looking at him. She imagined at how Jayden would have been as a child if he is this much innocent now.

"He is proud of you", she said with sweetness and warmth in her voice.

Jayden laughed and shook his head.

"You know Emily, why I never speak of my childhood?", Jayden asked suddenly.

"Why?", Emily asked careful not to hurt him more.

"Because it wasn't the same as other children have. I used to go to the park with Ji, I used to see children playing there with their parents, how happy they seem. And I always wished my father to be here with me. Ji told me that my mother went missing after the battle was over, the battle that snatched away my biggest possession from me, my father. I used to feel sad but Ji was always there for me. He abandoned his own family and friends to raise me. He tries to give me everything he can but still I miss them, my parents", he said with some tears escaping his eyes.

The sight melted Emily's heart. Surely this was a Jayden she had never seen, or anyone for that matter. He himself was broken from inside, suffering every day since he was five, but never spoke a word. And she suddenly felt guilty, guilty for being selfish. She was concerned only about her problems and insecurities. She never even imagined how shattered Jayden would be from the inside when she can be so shattered even if she had her parents and a sister with her. Jayden needed comfort that day, and one thing Emily was very happy about, that Jayden had not gone to Catherine for letting out his emotions, he had come to her, no matter how he had behaved earlier. This gesture increased Emily's admiration for him.

"How were they, I mean your parents?", she asked softly looking at him.

Jayden looked at her and said clearing his tears, "My father, as you all know, was very dedicated, very sincere, strict but in a loving way. He never failed to show me his love at any moment. He was there at each step with me, he used to play with me, sleep with me and he was my role model. The day he left or was rather taken away from me was the day I thought that a part of my life was snatched from me. I was devastated completely, but I learnt how to deal with that loss and that made me even stronger"

Emily nodded smiling and then asked, "Your mother?"

Jayden let out a laugh and replied looking directly into her eyes, "Just like you!"

"Huh?", Emily asked confused.

"She was just like you Em", and the word 'Em' melted her heart once again,"She was strong but in a different way. She was the heart of the previous Samurai family. She was bubbly, cheerful and loved to smile. She was very caring too. Though she knew very well how to hide everything behind her smile. Her worries she never revealed, every emotion radiated from her body, every emotion except her own suffering"

Emily looked down listening to this. It felt as if every word Jayden had said was directed towards her. She could feel it so easily and she could compare herself to Jayden's mother.

"But you know what", Jayden said looking at her while her eyes were fixed on the ground beneath.

"What?", she asked.

"There was this one single person who could understand her each feeling, who could lift her up whenever she felt down, who could hold her whenever she felt like crying and who could hear all the voices behind her silence", he said in a serious yet soothing tone.

"Who?", she asked.

"My father", Jayden replied and Emily's head jerked up. Her eyes were full of tears, she could easily feel Jayden's suffering and it broke her to listen to all of this.

"Jay…"

But before she could continue Jayden cut her off.

"Em, you know what my father used to tell her every time"

Emily shook her head and he said taking hold of her hand,"That there come times in life when we feel low. We don't know what to do? Disappointment in everything is what prevails and every situation seems harsh. But at that moment what we need is to believe in ourselves. We need to find someone we could bare our heart to. Someone who can understand us and accept us for what we are and as long as we believe in ourselves, we would be able to fight any battle life offers us. And you know what always happened next?"

Emily's eyes were now full with tears. She shook her head as a response to his question and some tears escaped her eyes.

Jayden let out a beautiful smile and rubbed her tears with his fingers before replying, "All my mother's worries would go away and she would let out a beautiful smile and that was the thing I loved the most, her smile and your smile Em, reminds me of my mother's smile, it gives me strength, never lose it"

Emily looked him into the eyes, and smiled. Her first true smile in a long time and Jayden too smiled looking at her.

Jayden got up from the bench and looked at her and said, "I think we need some sleep now, training tomorrow"

Emily caught hold of his hand and said, "Thank you Jay"

"For what Em?", he asked confused.

"For everything", she replied and she too got up. Jayden smiled listening to this response.

But the moment was ruined just as the gap sensor outside the Shiba House went off.
