I would like to start with a huge apology! A month, too long. Anyway, this chapter is a filler of sorts and is very short. I apologize again. But, would like to say happy (early) thanksgiving for those who celebrate. I probably won't have another chapter up before then, but am looking to have another out before christmas. All I have to say is the usual excuses. Life is whooping my butt right now and I seem to have hit a minor wall with how to execute the rest of this story. That being said IT WILL BE FINISHED. Just hang in there with me. Thank you to my faithful readers, followers, favoriters, and reviewers. It means so much to me. Now on to the story.
I snarled. "How in the hell did you lose her?" I hoped he could hear through the phone just how pissed I was. I was already crabby, so to speak, since I had distanced myself from Roza. And now this idiot lost her. Before I knew what was happening I was peeling out of the driveway. My knuckles were white from the death grip I had placed on the steering wheel. All I saw was red, because somehow I knew. I knew that Doru had manipulated her somehow to meet him. I let another roar erupt from my chest at the thought.
I skidded up to the black SUV parked next to the sidewalk. I jumped from my spot in the drivers seat. I grabbed Theo by his collar. "You're lucky I want you with me because I have no problem getting rid of nuisances." I knew I was being harsh but the caring side of me turned off when I got the phone call. I threw him at the ground, not really caring if he landed on his feet or not. I scouted the surrounding buildings before spotting what looked like an abandoned factory a few blocks down.
There were foot and tire tracks freshly inlaid in the ground. "This is the place. Call for back up. I don't know how many are in there." I carefully climbed the fence, noting how odd it was that there were no guards stationed here. "You're going by yourself?" I paused slightly looking at the shocked expression on Theo's face. "That's my child she's carrying." His eyes widened and I dropped gracefully to the ground. I pulled my guns from the holster on my back.
I slowly made my way through a side door, ending up in a side corridor somewhere. This is probably where the guards are rotating. I assumed I would come upon a door leading to the heart of the factory if I stayed on my course and after a few minutes I was proven correct after taking out two patrolmen. I inched along the shadows quietly when I heard his voice.
"You're Russian really was quit stupid wasn't he? Taking my advice and distancing himself from you, all in a futile attempt to keep me away from you. Instead, while every one was concerned with you, precious flower, I took the youngest Belikov." I could feel the blood drain from my face. That was how he got her to meet him. That bastard. I stuck my head carefully around the piece of steel that was hiding me.
Doru stood in the middle of ten men in black, Vika sat in a chair several yards behind him with a man behind her. As if that wasn't enough to make me stifle down the vomit betraying me, Roza knelt with two guns pointed at her. One at her head and one at her stomach. It took everything I had to keep from throwing up.
My rage burnt hotter than ever. I checked the gun at the back of my waistband and checked that I still had five shots left in my left hand and two in my right. I had two knives on either side of my hip. I wasn't in the mood to play nice. Quickly I shot the man behind Vika and ran to a different spot in the shadows. I steadied my breath, trying not to relive the moment that changed me from who I was before to who I was now.
It was 'feeding time." Darkness was slowly creeping into the jungle forest and from my spot chained to the post I could hear the roar of the engine, signaling I would be allowed five minutes away from the post to eat. I had been thinking of doing this every day for many long days. I would tonight. I saw the man beside me draw his last breath hours ago and in that moment knew I would not suffer the same fate without a fight.
The chains clinked and rattled as they unfastened them from the post. I gingerly rubbed the cuff spots on my wrists, taking in the fact that the sores no longer faded. They were permanent. How attractive. I picked up the fork gently, raising the pieces of unknown meat to my lips.
The man turned his back to walk away for a few minutes, like he did every night, thinking I was too weak and beaten down to fight back. In that moment I pounced, slinging my chains around his neck, wrapping them tightly, before plunging the fork deep into the vein of his neck. Immediately blood began to soak to ground. My hand over his mouth muffled the cries of pain and slowly he fell limp in my arms.
I gingerly set him down, looking around at the same time. I unlocked the cuffs from my wrists and carefully clothed myself with his attire. I disposed of his body in a near by gorge and quickly made my way through the forest in the opposite direction of the camp. My hands shook as I remembered the weight of his lifeless body in my hands, the feel of him struggling to break free. Sounds of yelling broke out behind me and I pushed my legs faster, a mask falling into place. I could physically feel my heart freezing and hardening. No longer would I let my emotions get in the way of survival.
I took a calming breath to steady my breath and whirled from behind the wall. Pop, pop. Two more men hit the floor and I could hear the chaos ensuing. I smiled. After successfully taking all but one man out I was ready to finish the job. Suddenly Doru spoke. "She's lovely, boy. Strong, feisty, yet so soft at the same time. It's a shame its going to end this way. Except, it doesn't have to. Show yourself or the girlie dies." I cursed, slowly walking from the shadows, hands raised. "Ah, see there? Not so hard was it? It was actually fun having you on the island. Always giving me something to do." I noted that Vika was gone and I thanked the heavenly power that I saved her.
Doru broke me from my thoughts as he bent his head to the crook of Roza's neck, his eyes never leaving mine. His gun ran along her swollen stomach and finally I broke eyes contact, unable to watch the scene before me. He chuckled. "Not so brave anymore Belikov?" I clenched my jaw, meeting his gaze once more. He planted a kiss on Roza's cheek and her whimper carried to where I stood. I met her eyes, hoping I could portray everything I felt through them. The corner of her lips tugged upwards just barely but I saw it. That alone gave me what I need.
Before anyone could blink I yanked a throwing knife from its hip holster and flung it towards the last patrolman. It landed right on mark, but I barely paid attention to that, as I ripped my gun loose of its confines and firing the last shot in the clip right into Doru's shoulder. He screamed, clutching his wound and releasing Roza at the same time. She ran towards me, meeting me in the middle. I wrapped my arms around her, chanting in Russian to her over and over again how much I loved her. The doors swung open and our men filed in. It wasn't long before Doru was cuffed and the police were getting statements from Roza and I.
The whole time I recalled what happened, my eyes were glued to Roza's, trying to make out whether she was okay or not. She looked deathly pale and it took everything I had not to run over to her and envelope her in my arms. A paramedic came to her and seemed to be giving her a once over, before telling her she needed to go to the hospital. That was my cue. Brushing past the officer, I grabbed the door to the ambulance right before it slammed shut. The man looked annoyed and was just about to scold me. Then he seemed to realize who I was.
His eyes raked over my body. "Sir, you're bleeding." I shrugged, moving to sit next to Roza. Pain of the physical kind hadn't entered my mind for a long time. I grabbed Roza's hand and she closed her eyes. I was faintly aware that the man was suturing my side and arm up, but all I could see were her beautiful brown eyes. I raised her hand to my lips before setting it back down at her side, my head following its path. I felt her left hand weakly thread its way into my hair. I squeezed her hand, hoping that when everything settled down, she could forgive me. For everything.
A wicked laugh sounded from deep within the forest behind me. I looked out at the ocean, feeling the pain in my calf from the gunshot wound. I willed myself to steady my breathing. It wasn't working. My breaths came out harshly, burning. I knew he was catching up to me and as I looked outward through the jagged rocks, I knew I had two choices: Be killed by Doru, or jump into the ocean and hope I floated somewhere better.
The men broke through the tree line behind me, lead by Doru. I started running across the rocks, hoping I had the time to make it to the edge before Doru or his gun could catch me. I pushed my legs further than I ever thought possible. Surely if there was a hell on earth, this would be it. Roza flashed through my mind. I had to make it.
"Come on boy. You think your lovely girlie will want you back after you killed her father?" Another wicked laugh rang through the forest, chilling me to the bone. I made it! The joy coursing through me had me buzzing. I turned back at the edge of the rock; going against everything I had been taught. Don't hesitate. That was all it took, Doru had the perfect opening. He threw his pistol up, and a pop rang through the air. The bullet hit my side as I twisted, throwing me into the churning water below. The last thing in my mind were brown, kind eyes as I sunk into darkness.
