Katya Alexandrova was sitting behind the reception desk that morning when she watched the paramedics rush the old woman in, demanding doctors to clear a room, and help get the woman sorted. This was the second time she'd witnessed one of these late night crises, the first time being when Fred Andrews was rushed in after he'd been shot. At least that time, his undeniably hot son, Archie, had ran in with him, providing Katya with some much needed eye candy while she was manning the desk in the waiting room in the early hours of the morning. This time however, the woman was followed by a two people, one of whom was Penelope Blossom. Ugh, she hated that woman, and she couldn't believe Toni Topaz was friends with her daughter. Those people were uptight and nasty.

Disinterested, she'd turned away from the scene, returning to the latest novel her boyfriend Eddie had recommended. As per the usual, it was a Stephen King novel – why wasn't she surprised? Stephen King was the god of writing according to her boyfriend, Eddie Johnson. When she learnt that, suddenly his nickname of 'King' made so much more sense. It amused her, to see a Serpent reading – especially this particular Serpent.

Eddie 'King' Johnson had arrived in Riverdale a few weeks after his twelfth birthday. The Texan was easily 6ft even then, and towered over his classmates. He had the drawl of a cowboy – something that those Ghoulie scum were delighted to point out. They weren't so delighted when King effortlessly lifted the speaker by the throat and pinned him against the wall, asking the boy to say it again. Eddie Johnson might have been lanky and quiet, but that didn't mean he wasn't tough. He had to be tough, growing up on the backstreets of Texas City, where crime was rife and healthcare far too expensive for his family. His dad had always been a heavy drinker, so he learnt quickly where to throw punches and how to block them, because when his dad was drunk, his dad turned nasty. That's why his mother moved to Riverdale, with him and his sister – they moved to escape his alcoholic father. Naturally suspicious, Eddie had fitted right in with the Serpents in his classes, quickly discovering – though it might not have been his fight – they were his family, and that he was prepared to do anything to keep the Serpents going.

It had been four years since Katya had arrived in Riverdale, and a year since she'd officially got together with Eddie. The two had bonded pretty quickly over the fact that – essentially – they were outsiders, by both accent and appearance in comparison to the children of Riverdale that surrounded them. Katya's heavy Russian accent immediately set her apart from the others. Like every time someone new started at Southside High, the Ghoulies decided to do whatever they could to break her, to try and show the entire student body who was actually in charge. Her sharp tongue and sarcastic nature quickly became apparent to anyone who tried to belittle her, and she refused to take any shit from anybody. She was brutally honest and highly intelligent. Both were qualities that Toni Topaz respected, leading to them becoming firm friends, fast. Her father was an ex-FSB officer turned cop, so the family had relocated from Kasimov in Russia to small-town Riverdale in the USA. For the town with 'pep', Katya was pretty disappointed: this place was just as depressing as her old hometown. Despite being slender, Katya was one of the strongest girls in her class. Athletically inclined, she engaged in all of the stereotypical activities a girl would – dance, music, theatre etc – but also excelled in martial arts. Martial arts were her favourite thing: there was nothing more satisfying than the face of a burly guy after he'd been beaten by a girl. That, and the pay-check she received at the end of every month worth $100 for her helping man the desk part time at the hospital.

Watching the pair standing in the waiting room, Katya pulled her phone out and messaged Toni.

Blossom girl's family in hospital… You know anything, Topaz?

She'd waited all night for a reply and hadn't received one. As the hands on the clock approached four, she left the desk, allowing the older woman – Mrs. Bird – to take over while she went and got a few hours rest before she was back on duty.

She messaged Eddie too. Something about the way Penelope Blossom and that man were talking made her slightly uncomfortable. Nobody speaks in hushed voices in the corner of a waiting room, unless they have something to hide. Both looked rather irritated. Remembering how Toni had said something the other night about Penelope Blossom being even worse when she was irritated, Katya messaged her boyfriend, telling him to seek out Toni, and to bring bagels when he came by to keep her company the next day. His reply was instant – he would head over to Thomas' trailer and speak to her.

At ten, she walked back out to the desk, to be confronted by the sight of a rather lost girl mulling about in the waiting room.

"Can I help?" Katya asked, her accent making her voice sound rather husky.

"Yes, actually, you can." Cheryl replied, looking the girl behind the desk up and down. She vaguely recognised the girl as one of Toni's friends from the Southside, but not one of the Serpents if she remembered correctly… a Katie maybe? Shaking her head slightly, Cheryl continued, "Erm, my Nana Rose was brought in this morning, and I was wondering where I could find her…"

"Nana Rose?" Katya repeated.

"Nana Rose," Cheryl confirmed, and noticing Katya's disbelieving expression, realised where she'd gone wrong. "Oh, she'll be under Roseanne Blossom! Sorry…"

"Hey, it's okay," Katya said as she typed the old woman's name into the computer. Waiting for the details to load, she decided to engage in some conversation, because the redhead before her looked pretty stressed. "Blossom, you said, right? So I'm guessing that makes you… Cheryl Blossom?"

"Of course," Cheryl snapped, "And what's it to you?"

"Oh, I'm Katya, I'm a friend of Toni's – Topaz has a soft spot for you."

Cheryl nodded and smiled slightly at the girl. "You're friends with TT?"
"Yep. Friends since I came here four years ago. Poor girl's never had much luck with love."

"Wait… are you King's girlfriend?"

"Guilty as charged," Katya smirked, at the redhead. "How do you know?"

"Toni's spoken plenty about her matchmaking skills with her two best friends."

Katya laughed as Cheryl said that. "Of course she has. She's pretty proud of setting us up."

"We should double date sometime," Cheryl mused as Katya wrote down the room number that Cheryl's grandmother was in.

"Double date?" Katya repeated.

"Well yeah, now Toni and I are an item…"

"Wait – Sweetpea wasn't lying then when he was rambling about Choni being a thing?"

"Choni?" Cheryl rolled her eyes.

Katya laughed and handed Cheryl the piece of paper. "Okay then, Cheryl Blossom, here you go. Room 314, second floor up, fifth door on the right."

"Thanks," Cheryl replied, taking the paper from the Russian girl. "Might I ask if my mother's still up there?"

"She left half an hour ago," Katya replied, amused when Cheryl let out a sigh of relief.

"Thank god," Cheryl muttered, smiling at the other girl. "Well, I best go up and see her. It was nice meeting you, Katya, thanks for all your help."

"No problem, Cheryl Blossom," she replied with a nod, grinning when she saw Eddie walk through the door.

"I come bearing bagels!" he announced as he made his way over to the desk, frowning slightly when he saw his girlfriend's full attention was on her phone. Looking down, he noticed she was messaging Toni, saying something about… a girlfriend? "What's occurring?" he asked when his girlfriend hit send.

"Topaz has only gone and got together with Cheryl Blossom!"

"Cheryl 'get your Sapphic Serpent hands off of my body' Blossom?"

"Yeah."
"No way."

"Way, way."

"Fucking hell!" he muttered. "What's she like?"

"Nice enough I guess, but her mother seems like a psycho."

"That's kinda funny you know…"

"How?"

"Toni told me to ring if I saw Penelope Blossom in here."

"Perhaps it's a good idea to keep an eye on Cheryl then."
"Especially while Toni's busy setting things straight with Toby."

"Toby? As in big brother Toby?"

"Yep."

"Day of shocks all round, then."

The pair laughed as Katya said that, deciding then was the perfect time to make a start on those bagels.

"I'm sorry for everything," Toby whispered hoarsely to his sister as he began to recount what had happened from the point he left Riverdale. "After I, I killed those Ghoulies, I knew I couldn't stay round here, not when I knew there'd be people coming for me, especially if that other guy got back to Pop's. I didn't know if he recognised me, but there weren't that many people in Riverdale those days with big Serpent tattoos on their necks. It would only have been a matter of time till someone put two and two together and I'd get sent down for murder." Glancing at Toni, he smiled softly when he noticed Toni nodding in understanding. "So I ran up north, hopping right over the border to Quebec. Hung around there for a few months, got in a couple of fights, moved on to Montreal where I met Hiram Lodge. Got a job, and a wage, and yeah, he offered a transfer down here, something about his other contacts going cold? Anyway, I'm back and I'm here to stay."

"You're working for Hiram Lodge?" Toni asked, totally disgusted.

"Yeah," Toby replied, noticing his sister's disapproval. "Why is that so bad?"

"He's a bad guy, Toby."

"Well obviously Antoi- Toni."

"No, as in he's Serpent enemy number two right now."

"Shit."

"Yep."

"What's he been doing?"

"Buying Riverdale piece by piece, shut down Southside High, planning for a prison –"
"Rewind kid, shut down Southside High?"
"About a month ago. Jug protested against it – we all did – but he sent Archie Andrews in and bulldozed it."

Conflicting emotions crossed Toby's face when he learned that. Southside High… gone? That place had been his school, his kingdom; he'd been in charge there. His home, his legacy… destroyed?

"Fucking dick." Toby muttered, "I knew he was shady, but I didn't know any of this, I swear."

"I know," Toni said, completely believing her brother.

"I just wanted to come home. To find my family."

Cheryl had been sat in the hospital room with her Nana for almost two hours. Holding a battered novel in her hand, she tried to focus on something besides the steady beeping sounds being emitted from the machines her Nana Rose was hooked up to.

One monitoring heartrate – there was a steady sound coming from that. One monitoring brain activity – there was little sound coming off of it. Those machines made Cheryl's heart jump every time they made a sound, because every sound was a painful reminder that this was very much real: that her mother and Claudius had every intention of killing her grandmother.

The redhead was deadly certain that her mother was aware that Cheryl knew of their intentions. It was there, in the glare on the driveway last night, when the woman had seen her and Toni together, discussing how Claudius was in Clifford's pyjamas.

But right now, the most pressing problem wasn't that Penelope and Claudius had attempted murder. Right now, the biggest thing was getting Nana Rose out of here, to somewhere safe, because as soon as she was out of hospital, she would have to go back to Thistlehouse.

And knowing they had tried once made Cheryl that much more certain that they would try to kill the old woman again.

Standing up, Cheryl decided she needed to speak to a doctor, or even Katya on the desk, to get Nana Rose discharged elsewhere, or find some means of getting Penelope and Claudius removed from Thistlehouse. She approached her Nana, who was still out cold, and placed a soft kiss on the old woman's cheek.

"I'm going to sort this Nana," she whispered, "I'm not going to let either of them hurt you, or me, anymore. You focus on getting better, and I'll be back, okay? I need to see Toni."

As Cheryl left the room, she didn't see the way her Nana's heart rate slowed ever so slightly, as if hearing what her granddaughter had said had made the old woman relax.

"I'm kinda glad you've come home, you know Toby," Toni admitted.

"I'm glad, and missing you growing up kills me. I want to make it right though."

"I want to sort things too."

"How about we go to the Bijou tonight? Catch a film?"

"Not tonight. I need to help my girlfriend."

"Girlfriend?" Toby repeated.

"Problem?" Toni demanded threateningly – no brother of hers was going to be homophobic.

"Not at all," Toby chuckled, "So who's the lucky girl?"
"Cheryl Blossom."

Toby choked on his drink when she said that.

"Why is everybody so shocked that I'm going out with her?"

"Listen, maybe her type have changed in the last nine years, but last time I checked, the Blossoms were corrupt and evil."

"They still are," Toni admitted, "but Cheryl isn't – you'll really like her Toby."

"How long have you guys been together?"

"Exactly twenty-seven hours."

"Wow, that's ages…" he replied sarcastically.

"I swear to god, Toby –"

"Nah, I get it, young love and all that."

Toni smiled at her brother then, the realisation that he was the same person he was nine years ago finally sinking in. Catching him off guard, she wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into a bone-crushing hug. "I've missed you so much!"

Toby chuckled, deciding that being close to his sister was far more important than oxygen ever would be.

Pulling away slightly, Toni decided she would tell him what Cheryl had said to her. "You know, she was right."

"Who was right?"

"Cheryl."

Toby raised his eyebrow, silently gesturing for Toni to continue.

"She said that you might not be perfect, but I should give you a chance. I'm glad I did."

"Oh, An- Toni… maybe she isn't so bad."

Cheryl wandered down the corridor, her eyes narrowing when she saw her Nana's doctor at the end of the corridor. He seemed like a nice man, he'd been really sweet when he'd come in to check on Nana Rose, offering Cheryl a drink or some food. Though she'd refused both, Cheryl couldn't help but trust the doctor, and knew that he was taking good care of Nana Rose. Smiling slightly, she approached him.

"Dr Masters," she began, "Any updates on my Nana?"

Two floors below them, Katya and Eddie were sat at the desk, watching the people go by like they would any Saturday.

One woman in particular caught Eddie's attention as she stormed past, a scowl fixed on her face. She had flame red hair and flawless makeup. Tapping his girlfriend, he hissed, "Isn't that Penelope Blossom?"

Katya glanced up and saw the woman briskly walking towards the elevator. "Shit. She can't be here. Not with Cheryl upstairs." Eddie gave her a confused look, silently asking his girlfriend to elaborate. "The girl was terrified about whether her mother was still here. I need you to ring Toni while I deal with her."

"Okay," Eddie replied, still not getting why his girlfriend was so panicked.

Katya walked over to the woman.

"Excuse me, Madam," she began, making sure her Russian accent was extra thick over her words, "I do not believe you have signed in."

"I'm sorry?" Penelope drawled, "Since when do I have to sign in?"

"I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but I need you to come fill out a visitors form in reception."

"I am here for my daughter. I was here this morning for god's sake, you saw me."

"Yes, but that was an emergency circumstance, you must come sign now."

"Listen girl," Penelope muttered through gritted teeth, her tone of voice threatening and aggressive. "I don't know who you are, but I am going up there to get my daughter and nothing you do is going to stop me, okay?"

Katya glared at Penelope. "Are you threatening me?"

"Not at all," Penelope said briskly. "Just… making things clear."

The elevator chimed as the doors opened, and Penelope slid in, pressing the button that would send her up to the second floor before Katya could stop her.

"Toby, you're going to love her." Toni gushed as she began to spill every reason why Cheryl was The One to her brother. "She acts all mean and cold, but really, she's the kindest, most wonderful girl in the world. She has it tough, but she is amazing and I love her."

Noticing the way his little sister's eyes shone as she spoke, Toby beamed. "I can't wait to meet her then."

Toni stood silent for a while, deep in thought. "Grab your coat then," she replied.

"Where are we going?"
"Hospital."

"Why?"

"She's there with her Nana, we'll pick her up and take her to Pop's."

"I'll start Grandpa's car then-"

"Oh no you don't." Toni insisted, "We're biking."

Silently raising his eyebrow in a manner that would impress Cheryl, Toby watched how his sister shrugged off his attempt to ask why.

"Fine," he said, shrugging his Serpent jacket on, "let's go."

As the pair wandered out of the trailer, Toni's phone began to ring…

"We just got her panel back," Doctor Masters replied to Cheryl in a calm voice, giving the girl a soft smile. As he contemplated his next words, his eyes darkened, "there was a trace of epagomenic toxin in her blood. Tanis root, which is strange because it's so rare." Cheryl's face fell when the doctor said that, the realisation of what Penelope had put in her tea suddenly dawning on her. The doctor continued, "But, as your mother and uncle explained, they caught your mother on more than one occasion chewing bits of Tanis root she grows in your greenhouse, so –"

Cheryl's eyes narrowed as he said that, and she found her stomach churning. Her Nana couldn't do anything besides watch her shows from inside that chair; she hadn't been able to do gardening since Cheryl and Jason were toddlers. The greenhouse was Penelope's pride and joy. Only Penelope Blossom could have grown the Tanis root. The true purpose of these plants suddenly became apparent; they had definitely been grown to poison them.

"It's more of her sundowner's syndrome," the doctor concluded, observing the way panic crossed the young girl's face. "We'll keep her for observation another day, but then she'll be well enough to return home.

"To my mother and uncle?" She mumbled, consumed by panic. "No, Doctor Masters, you don't understand-"

"Cheryl?" A familiar voice drawled behind her.

Cheryl froze, her eyes flashing with the same look a deer gets when caught in the headlights.

Her heart sank when she realised Penelope had come back, and, feeling in the pockets of her jeans, she felt sick when she realised she had left her phone in the room with her Nana.

Fear pulsed through her body as Cheryl realised she couldn't ring her girlfriend.

As she realised that Toni was right.

As she realised she was alone.

"King?" Toni asked as she picked up her phone. "What are you? Penelope Blossom? At the hospital? She was angry? Fuck. Right, I'm coming. Whatever you do, don't let her hurt Cheryl, okay?"

Toni hung the phone up with that, furiously revving the engine of her bike, shocking the machine into life. "Come on, Toby, we have to go."

"What's the rush?" her brother asked as he jumped on his own bike.

"We need to save my girlfriend."

"Cheryl, dear, there you are," Penelope crooned with false concern. "You're looking a little worse for wear. Poor dear hasn't slept in days," she told the doctor, placing a firm hand on Cheryl's shoulder.

Cheryl's entire body tensed at the touch.

"Why don't we stop bothering Doctor Masters and I'll take you straight home?" Penelope pondered, but didn't wait for a reply, as she had already began gently tugging Cheryl away from the doctor midspeech.

Cheryl darted a nervous glance at the doctor, hoping he might jump to her rescue, but like every other person in Riverdale, he couldn't see past her mother's faux persona.

"Come on," Penelope jibed, turning around to give the doctor a smile as they walked away.

Walking down the corridor, Cheryl felt the tears prickling at her eyes, but was determined they weren't going to fall.

Unable to do anything to stop her mother, Cheryl let Penelope guide her out of a back door, and force her into the car, feeling her heart sink as the older woman brought the engine to life.

Where was Toni Topaz?

Toni burst in through the doors of main reception to find Eddie stood by the desk.

"Where is she?"

"Upstairs, I think," he replied, nervously looking Toby up and down. "Neither of them have come past this way –"

"Toby, you stay here." Toni ordered, "Stop them if they come past. They're both redheads, you know what Cheryl looks like." Turning to face Eddie, she added, "King, you're with me. Let's go."

The pair made their way up the stairs, only to bump into Katya who was running in the opposite direction.

"K?" Toni began.

"T…" Katya muttered nervously, "I don't know how, or when, but they're gone. Both of them. And this was in her Nana's room."

Sheepishly, Katya lifted up Cheryl's phone.

"Fuck!" Toni swore, kicking out at the wall. "We need to find her… We have to stop Penelope before she hurts my girlfriend!"

Eddie and Katya shared a grim glance and the trio ran back down to reception, getting joined by Toby.

"Where is she?" Toby asked.

"Gone." Toni snapped. "We have to find her."

"Where are we going to go then?"

Toni looked down the street, and grimaced as she said the one place she never wanted to go back to.

"We're going to Thistlehouse…"

The car was driving in the wrong direction. It passed a sign that said 'you are now leaving Riverdale.' Cheryl grew restless as she looked at her mother. They weren't going home, they weren't returning to Thistlehouse, and if they weren't going there, then where were they going?

Panicked, Cheryl decided that the one thing she was going to do was confront her mother. "I think, I think I figured it out," she mumbled, turning to face her mother in the driver's seat. "You paralysed Nana Rose with Tanis root, and then pushed her down the stairs…"

"You've gone mad." Penelope replied, shaking her head at her daughter. "That's all there is to it. You have lost your mind and you leave us no choice."

"What do you mean no choice?" Cheryl blurted out, suddenly finding the car too confining, desperate to be in some open air.

"But it's alright," Penelope responded, keeping her glance firmly on the road. "They're going to make you all better. All better."

Sickened, Cheryl turned to look out of the window… where was her mother taking her?

Toni, Toby, Katya and King pulled their bikes up in the woods outside Thistlehouse, and marched to the edge of them, watching the house. There was no car outside, and no lights on in the house. Toni marched to the door.

"It's locked!" She shouted. "The fucking thing's locked. The bitch has taken her somewhere."

"Toni," Toby soothed, "You need to calm down."

"Toby, you don't understand, that bitch has my girlfriend and she's going to hurt her I know it!"
"Toni, we're going to find her," Katya interrupted. "We need to figure something out."

"We aren't leaving." Toni insisted, "We wait here until Penelope shows up. Then, I confront her. Hopefully, she'll bring Cheryl with her."

The trio nodded at her, as they walked back to the edge of the woods, fully prepared to sit and wait, even though none of them believed Penelope would bring her daughter home.

Three hours later, Penelope's red car drove swiftly up the driveway, parking outside of Thistlehouse.

The four craned their necks to catch a glimpse of what was happening, and collectively their hearts sank when only Penelope got out the car.

Instantly, Toni jumped to her feet. "I'm going over there-"
"Oh no you aren't," Katya muttered, holding her best friend back, "You can't go over there like this."

"K – let me go."

"T, I'm not letting you get arrested."
"I'm not getting arrested."

"If you lose your shit at Penelope, you are," King mumbled, and Toni clenched her fists.

"I need to speak to that bitch." Toni muttered through gritted teeth.

"You need to be civil." Toby instructed.

"I'll be a fucking fairy princess." Toni promised, breaking free of Katya's grasp as she marched over to the door.

The trio watched Toni from the woods, taking in a deep breath as the Serpent pulled the doorbell.

"Mrs Blossom, hi," Toni began, her arms crossed so the woman couldn't see her clenched fists, "I'm looking for Cheryl, she wasn't at the hospital with her Nana."

"No, she's gone." Penelope drawled, looking at Toni with disgust. "Boarding school in Switzerland, all girls. She left us earlier."

Toni let out a stiff laugh, hoping it would cover up the way she muttered 'bullshit' instinctively in response to that. "Mrs Blossom, that doesn't make any sense." Toni replied, seething.

"Don't come here again," Penelope stated in response slamming the door in Toni's face.

Toni reached her hand out to open the door, only to be pulled back by Katya.

"Oh no you don't." The Russian muttered in her ear.

"K-"

"She isn't there. We need to find her. You're no help to Cheryl Blossom locked up in a prison cell."

Grudgingly, Toni had to admit that Katya was right, and let the Russian girl take her back to the woods where they had made camp.

"So where now?" Toby asked, gesturing to the sky as the sun began to set.

"Home." Toni replied, her heart sinking as she realised she had no idea where the girl she loved was.

King wrapped a protective arm around Toni's shoulder. "She's going to be okay, Topaz, I know it."

Toni shrugged off his arm, because for the first time ever, Toni didn't believe any of what Eddie Johnson said…

There was the squeaking of wheels outside Cheryl's padded cell that shocked Cheryl out of her trance. She'd only been here an hour, two max, and already she could feel herself beginning to crack. Why had Penelope done this to her? Why hadn't her mother just killed her?

She felt her heart begin to break when she realised nobody was coming to rescue her, a feeling that was magnified by a hundred when there was a click of the lock and a nun opened the door, stepping into the room.

They pushed a trolley in, and Cheryl recoiled at the sight of them, in their pristine white clothing. She curled into a ball at the head of the wrought iron bed, desperately trying to fight off the haunting memory of Jason's coroner, and that body…

She shivered at that thought.

"Oh you poor child," the nun soothed, sitting on the edge of Cheryl's bed. The old woman reached a hand out to caress Cheryl's face, making the redhead relax ever so slightly. "There's nothing to be afraid of, Sister Woodhouse is going to help you."

Flooded with relief, Cheryl breathed, "Thank you, Sister Woodhouse." Perhaps this nun was going to help her get out of here, get back to Toni, to her friends, to safety.

The nun smiled, "yes, she's going to rid you of all those naughty demons. The ones making you feel such awful, unnatural thoughts. But today, you must rest, but tomorrow, the real work – the conversion – begins."

Only as the nun said that did Cheryl notice how sadistic the woman's grin was, more like a grimace. Suddenly, she was flooded with suspicion; this woman wasn't here to help her.

Glancing upwards, she saw the balding man hand the nun some form of needle, which the nun caressed gently in her hands.

What had the nun said? That she must rest? Wait a second –

Realising exactly one second too late what was about to happen, Cheryl tried to fight against the hands holding her arms and legs in place. And, as she felt the needle plunge into her leg, tried to fight against the drug coursing its way through her veins.

She let out a strangled cry.

Then, it all went black…
