Chapter 12: Unexpected Visit

A sigh escaped a pair of female lips as a pair of golden eyes scanned across the airport.

"I'm sure they're here somewhere, Mariah."

Said female looking towards her brother, and gave a weak smile, "Most likely, Lee." She swung her bag over her shoulder before looking around for a familiar face again. A smile spread across her lips when her eyes finally fell upon three familiar faces; Emily, Rick, and Michael of the old PPB All Starz Team.

Emily smiled back and waved as she spotted the Chinese siblings, "Welcome back to Chicago!"

"Thank you." Mariah walked to Emily to hug before greeting the other two Americans as well.

"It's good to see you guys again." Michael grinned as he adjusted the cap on his head. Never should it leave him no matter how old he became.

"Likewise." Lee spoke before his expression became serious, "So, how much do you actually know about Rei and the others?"

The three Americans exchanged glances before they motioned for the two Chinese to follow them to a minibus where Judy was waiting to drive them to a different location.

Michael sighed deeply as he began explaining, "We don't really know much. We haven't heard from them for at least about a month. Last thing we heard they were going to visit some German author named Satella Harvenheit. We've heard some rumors that they are living at her mansion right now and are running between there and some called the Hendric's Foundation but we have no idea what they are actually doing there.

Lee's eyes narrowed slightly, "Fits with the time we haven't been able to talk to Rei… And you're not able to get hold of them either?"

Rick shook his head. "Judy has gotten hold of Max a couple of times, but he cuts off early because he 'has something to do', but it is never told what."

Mariah was worried, "You don't think they might be hurt, do you?"

Emily shrugged, "Can't tell… We saw Kai shortly last week but he disappeared quite fast out of our view. He didn't look harmed though, he looked pretty much like himself, except…"

"Except..?" both Lee and Mariah turned their gazes to Emily, but soon changed them to Michael as he spoke instead.

"He was armed, with weapons. They were in some quite special holster and they looked to have some special designs, so we couldn't really tell if they were real weapons or just some sick show-off. But it still leaves a lot of wonders, especially when he then disappeared that fast. I am quite sure he heard us when we called for him." Michael said as he crossed his arms on the top of the seat he was supposed to be sitting on, but instead was half-way standing on with his knees on the seat.

"…" Mariah looked down at her hands in her lap. She didn't like getting this told, and she overall just had a bad feeling.

Lee pressed his lips together in a thin line shortly before speaking again, "Those terror attacks they've been talking about worldwide, there are not any chance they could have been involved with those, could there? We've heard all witnesses claim demons are fighting and what not…"

Rick scratched the back of his head, "We don't think they have had anything to do with those attacks. But they certainly are weird."

"They said it was some gas making people hallucinate, yes?" Mariah looked up again.

Michael scoffed, "That's what they're trying to claim it is, at least…"

Lee raised an eyebrow, "What is that supposed to mean?"

"The hotel Max, Rei and the others were staying at was under one of these attacks; we saw how it looked like afterwards. Something crashed in through the wall on the outside on the twelfth floor, without any other parts of the building getting destroyed. There were craters on the streets which looked like someone had crashed against the ground, like when you see those superhero movies and they're throwing each other around. They say it is bombs exploding, but if it really had been bombs, the damage would be much different. It was one of the only attacks, where not really anyone was hurt though." explained Michael.

Mariah and Lee exchanged glances. It indeed sounded weird all of this. Certainly demons didn't exist, but it was to wonder what had caused damage the way Michael was explaining.

The rest of the drive had minimal talking and was mostly done in silence.

About an hour later the minibus finally stopped in front of a large building which was connected to several larger buildings.

Emily whistled lowly, "It's bigger than our research labs…"

Judy didn't care much about the size of the Hendric's Foundation. Determined she walked in through the front doors to the reception hall. Upon seeing no one behind the counter, she chose a random door to walk through to begin her search for her son.

"O-oi! Judy! We can't just walk in?!" Emily called as the five younger people hurried after the oldest of the group.

"Watch me. I want to know what my son is doing. I do not intend to wait any longer with figuring this out." Judy said as she walked with fast steps through the hallway. They did not get far though before someone was blocking the hallway they were walking down through.

"Can I help you with anything~?" A young man looking no older than twenty stood there, his hands in his pockets and didn't look like he belonged to the Hendric's Foundation itself as he ran in a dirty hoodie and what looked like a leathery blindfold covering his eyes.

The people just stood there, staring at him to begin with. Who was this dude?

Lee was the first one to collect himself and began to speak, "Eh, if you can, then yes. We are looking for Rei Kon, Max Tate and their friends."

"Who?" the guy tilted his head to the side. It wasn't to tell whether he was playing dumb or if he actually didn't know who they were talking about.

Lee sighed and just repeated what he already had said, "We are looking for Rei Kon, Max Tate and their friends."

"No idea who that is." The guy spoke bluntly, a slight cocky tone to his voice.

Emily let out a sound to get the attention towards her instead, "May we ask who you are, instead?"

A smirk crept onto the man's face, "Why, that's never to know~"

Rick's brow twitched, "You! Don't get cocky! Answer our questions!"

The man's smirk just became wider, "Are ya threatening me hot shot? Then come if you dare!"

Rick's brow twitched again; who did this guy even think he was?! "Why you...!"

"GENAI!"

"Yes my love?" Genai spun around to face the owner of the voice.

Rei's hand collided with his own face in a 'facepalm'. Seriously what made Genai so cocky just today? He waved at Genai in some miserable attempt to make him disappear, "Sorry about that, he-…" Rei blinked as he spotted just who exactly Genai had been talking to, "Mariah? Lee? Everyone? What are you guys doing here?"

Mariah's face brightened the instant she saw Rei and for the moment entirely forgot the existence of Genai as she quickly hugged Rei, "I'm so glad you are okay!"

Rei wrapped an arm around Mariah to hug her back but still had the confused expression.

"We're looking for you and the others of course!" Lee said quickly before Rei could get to repeat his question. "We have barely been able to get in contact with any of you for a long time. We thought something had happened to you!"

"Why should something have happened to him, he has his ho-" Genai didn't get to finish his sentence as Rei stuffed his hand in Genai's face in order to shut him up and push him away.

"I'm sorry. I personally lost my phone and we have all been quite busy." Rei offered an apologizing smile.

"Well, what matters is that you and all the others are alright." Emily said but then glanced towards Genai, "Though… who is that guy?"

"An idiot. Please ignore his very existence." Rei attempted to push Genai away again, even though he seemed to very much want to join into the conversation. "And the blindfold is a trick; he can finely see through the fabric."

Genai huffed, "Who you calling an idiot?!"

Rei deeply ignored Genai and motioned for the group to follow him, "The others are in the lounge room. I'm sure they'll be happy to see you, especially Max." he smiled at them before leading them towards the lounge.

"The city has turned insane since the beginning of these terror attacks." Judy said as she looked towards Ewan, "And you keep my son and his friends at this place like laboratory rats. It is not safe to be here, I insist on they come with me as I leave!"

Ewan sighed softly and pushed his glasses further up on his nose. "I understand your concern considering these attacks, but I can assure you none of these young people are kept here against their will or used as 'laboratory rats'. They are however valuable members of our Organization."

"Valuable members?" Lee raised an eyebrow, "Since when have you all be members of this organization, and then valuable members even?" he looked from Rei, across Kai, Max, Tyson, Kenny and lastly to Hilary.

Max held his hands up and offered one of his rare strained smiled, "Easy! We really aren't forced here against our will. We just got a… job offer last month and decided to take it." He did not answer the question of what made them valuable members.

Rei stepped forward, "We are sorry that we did not keep in proper contact with you guys; but that is entirely our fault. It does not have anything to do with any of the other people at this place." Though even as he was saying this, he shot an I-told-you-so!-look in Ewan direction. Ewan was the one who had taken Rei's phone of reasons Rei still didn't really understand and now look who were there.

Ewan scoffed and just looked in another direction. He had made a wrong move, but nothing to do about that now.

"And lastly to add; we can guarantee we are entirely safe. We haven't been touched the slightest be those terror attacks, so there is nothing to worry about~" Tyson flashed a huge grin at the others.

"You moved away from the hotel you were staying at because a 'milder' terror attack took down your wall and made craters in front of the hotel you were staying at." Michael pointed out.

"…Besides that one we haven't been touched the slightest by those attacks." Tyson flashed another grin, not intending to give up the claim that they were the safest people in the city.

Genai just let out a snort, "Those are still not terror attacks but demon attacks." He mumbled from the corner where he was sitting.

Emily rolled her eyes, "Aren't you just a bit delusional when believing in the existence of demons?"

Genai just smirked, "Why, we've existed thousands of years before you were even born!"

The people turned their heads towards Genai when he came with the 'we' part.

Rei waved his hands, "I told you he's an idiot, just ignore him."

With some last disapproving glances to Genai, the people turned their gazes away from him.

Genai just sat in the chair, 'looking' at Rei with this bothersome smile that said 'you can't hide it forever'. Rei would have given Genai the 'I hate you' look if it wasn't for the fact Genai couldn't see it.

Judy cleared her throat. "Anyway, I must still insist that none of you are staying here. We have come to pick you up and leave Chicago with you all."

"No." a chorus of responses came from them all.

"No?"

"No." Kai repeated, "Listen here, we're in our twenties, we decide whatever the hell we want to do and for reasons we have decided that we are working here for now and we are staying here. We are not leaving just because you feel like it."

Mariah stood to her feet, "It is dangerous here! Why would you want to stay here?"

Rei sighed deeply. It was dangerous wherever he went at the moment, "It's not something which we can just explain. Actually we can't explain it at all because you wouldn't believe it. There is not much more we can say to this, so you've just got to trust us."

"Try us." Rick insisted.

"In reality you have actually just told you don't believe it." Kenny adjusted his glasses as he joined in on the conversation.

"And how can we have told you we don't believe it when you haven't told us what it is?" Michael asked, staying stubborn along with the others. He didn't get any answer to his question though.

Emily slowly tilted her head so she could look at the people over the edge of her glasses. "The only thing we have straight told we don't believe in right now is demons. Are you literally going to tell us you believe in demons and of some weird reason that keeps you here?"

"Well if you want to put it that way, then yes." Hilary said bluntly.

"You don't believe it then don't bother to understand it either. We don't intend to try to get you to understand." Rei said with a slight sharper tone to his voice before he turned to a door leading out onto a terrace, just so people could get some fresh air when they wanted to mainly during the summer. Having to explain something he didn't want to explain bothered him immensely.

"Rei, wait!" Mariah got to her feet and followed Rei outside. "We want to understand what you are trying to do here, but going with such illogical things won't help us understand."

Meanwhile, inside in the lounge the others continued the discussion back and forth in there. Judy still wanted them all, especially Max, to come with her and leave Chicago, but the others definitely did not intend to leave the city.

Rei simply shook his head to Mariah. He didn't want to bother explaining this stuff to her. He didn't want to show his true form to her either and in the end that would probably be the only way to entirely convince her if having to tell her the truth. But besides not wanting to tell her the truth, he didn't want her to get the idea to stay either and be in danger. He was stressing enough about Tyson & Co. staying; he didn't need Mariah and Lee to stay too.

"Rei please!" Mariah begged.

"NO!" Rei didn't intend to budge. Though suddenly his eyes widened and he just pushed Mariah harshly away from her so she fell to the floor.

"Get away from the door!" Genai called as he got to his feet and ran to the terrace door.

Things happened as if in slow-motion. The others turned their heads towards the terrace door. Mariah looked up from where she was lying on the floor and the sight meeting her was the most horrific sight she had ever met.

Like a speeding bullet, but with much more violent effect, a demon came crashing down and cut a sword straight through Rei's middle, parting his torso from the rest of his body.

Mariah's scream echoed throughout the building.

"REEEEEEEII!"
