Seto sighed as he watched his younger brother sleep. It seemed Mokuba was the only one who had been able to sleep. Since they returned from his appointment, Seto hadn't left Mokuba's side, the child's question still ringing in his ears.
Would Mokuba ever be able to walk again?
The doctors hadn't completely ruled it out, but Seto himself believed the chances to be astronomical at best. Of course, he couldn't bring himself to say this to Mokuba. He couldn't shatter the one ray of hope the little boy had left.
"Seto..."
The CEO of KaibaCorp turned to see his brother sitting up, glancing up at him as he rubbed his eyes tiredly.
"I thought you were asleep," he murmured softly.
Seto shook his head.
"You really do need to sleep, big brother," Mokuba said, laying back against his pillows.
Seto smirked wryly. Leave it to Mokuba to be more worried about his older brother.
...
The next morning, Mokuba asked if he and Seto could go out for a while. At first Seto was adamant in his refusal. But when the younger Kaiba pointed out that the doctors had instructed them to try to continue with life in order to help Mokuba adjust to his condition, he reluctantly agreed.
So now the two were heading down one of the streets of Domino City. They had just taken a turn down a corner when they saw a group of teenagers. The boys' blue high-necked coats and the girl's pink blazer and blue skirt identified them as students of Domino High. But as they got closer, Seto realized these were not just any students.
'Damn it!' the Blue-Eyes duelist cursed inwardly. 'I should have realized this is where Muto's grandfather's game shop is.'
"Hi, Mokuba," Yugi greeted, walking up to the two. "How have you been?"
"Fine," Mokuba answered warily. The young boy was still less than happy about his brother's first defeat at the hands of the shorter teen.
Yugi, picking up on the suppressed hostility, sighed.
"Well, we've all been waiting to hear how you were," he smiled slightly, trying to ease the tension.
"I fail to see how that's any business of yours," Seto replied icily, glaring at Yugi.
"He's just tryin' to be friendly!" Joey snapped. "What's your problem?"
"In a word; you," Seto retorted coolly.
Joey growled.
"Joey, this isn't necessary," Bakura stepped forward.
Joey stared dumbfounded as Bakura walked closer to Mokuba and smiled.
In spite of his dislike of Yugi and by extension, the boy's friends, Mokuba found himself returning the smile.
"You're the new kid," Seto spoke. His tone wasn't as aggressive as it had been when he addressed Yugi and Joey, but it wasn't exactly warm either. "Bakura, right?"
The white-haired boy nodded.
"Yes. And of course, even before I came to Domino, I knew you were Seto Kaiba."
Seto snorted. Of course the boy knew that.
It was then that he saw what looked like a Get Well card peeking out of Bakura's coat pocket. But before he could say a word, the boy reached into his pocket and handed the card to Mokuba.
"This is for you," he said softly.
Mokuba looked surprised, but took it.
"Uh...thanks..." he said, a questioning look on his face.
Before anyone could say a word, Bakura turned to Seto. But now his smile was gone; his lips were drawn in a straight line and his dark brown eyes took on a glazed, faraway look.
"You may not believe me when I tell you this, but I know what you're going through," he uttered mysteriously before turning and walking away.
Seto actually stared as he left.
He knew what they were going through...
How could he possibly know that?
...
...
I hope you all enjoyed that, feel free to let me know.
The next chapter will be out on Saturday, September 9th. Until then, everyone.
