Chapter 12

A car arrived in front of Gatsby's mansion, three weeks after Daisy had moved out of the residence. It happened to catch my eye because the car was very similar to one I had seen before.

Like one of Tom's cars.

Putting down the dish I was washing, I walked towards the windows near the door and watched what was happening at of curiosity. I was only human anyway and curiosity was part of our nature.

The car door opened and my eyes widened in surprise as I saw a head of blonde hair appear which led down to a slender body dressed in an expensive dress and jewelry. Immediately, I could tell it was Daisy but what was she doing here?

Was Gatsby lying about the stopped affair?

But over these three weeks, Daisy hadn't appeared at all and the two residents of the big house looked happier than ever before. So why was she here?

Even though she looked like a million dollars, she looked torn and tired as she made her way to the gate and knocked on it, a pair of dark sunglasses covering her eyes to avoid suspicion. After a few minutes, one of the servants came to check who it was. Brief conversation passed between them and it was quite obvious that she was asking if Gatsby was at home. The man shook his head and she requested another thing before the man nodded and walked away.

I stayed based at the curtains and was slightly taken back when I saw a familiar figure walk out, dressed in a yellow simple dress with her hair falling in waves down her back. Even though I couldn't see it clearly, her face showed calmness yet no other emotion as she came to greet the woman at the gate. First, there were a few gentle words between them before Daisy lifted a petite hand and Katherine's head snapped to the side as a sharp slap was sent her way. Angry words filled the air and it was easy to tell because though Daisy's voice was small, it was loud.

Katherine kept her head to the side until Daisy had finished, her long hair covering her face as she bent her head down, not saying anything.

"Jay will always choose me because you are nothing! You were made to be used and not to be loved! Come down from that pedestal of yours!" I heard that part clearly before the married woman glared at her one last time and got into her car and left.

At that point, the servant came towards her to check if she was okay as the young woman stayed still before looking up at the man and nodding her head. A sad smile appeared on her lips before she nodded once more and made her way back into the compound of the house and that was the last time I saw her that day.

No party was thrown for over a week as the house remained quiet and silent. Katherine didn't visit me as much as she used to when she did, she didn't radiate the usual happiness that I knew she was capable of. It was sad knowing that something was making her like this.

"Katherine." I said one day when we were in my living room, drinking tea. "What's wrong?" I asked, concern in my voice and her tired eyes looked at me with a type of emotion that didn't exist.

"I wish things would go back to the way they used to be, Nick….I'm getting tired and weary and…I don't think I can do this anymore." Katherine admitted, her voice shaky as her eyes closed, pulling her into a gentle sleep.

She slept over that night as I didn't have the heart to wake her up from her sweet dreams. I carried her to my bed and placed her there, pulling the blankets around her as she slept peacefully.

I knelt beside her and held her hand, keeping the bond strong even when daylight broke through.

Whatever was going on over there…

Please, stop for her sanity.
