You Cannot Go Against The Universe

Chapter 12

One falls into the Dark Abyss.

Kate was the first to arrive at the 12th and she had briefed Ryan and Esposito on as much of the situation as she knew. Given the gravitas of the scenario, she was glad that the boys didn't do any teasing when she told them Castle was babysitting. Kate kept glancing towards the elevator on the homicide floor waiting for her cousin to arrive. She noticed a group of detectives and uniforms were waiting to take the elevator to the ground floor and head home for the day.

"Yo Beckett, you don't think your cousin decided to go 'Man on Fire' with these guys do you?" Javier was only half joking. He really had no desire to have to stop Kayne from putting a hurting on these slime bags.

"No Javi, he said he'd be here. He was bringing someone from the Office that was recently appointed to his role in D.C. to look at the photos he picked up and try to see if they can find out anything useful." Kate exhaled a heavy breath, she remembered what her cousin had said earlier about the darkness he'd found in himself as an Operator… she knew all to well what is was like to keep those feelings locked in a vault in your mind.

Her eyes flew towards the elevator as it sounded it's arrival on the floor. If the circumstances had been better Kate probably would've laughed at the scene before her. The detectives parted like the Red Sea and a few of the younger unis decided that taking the stairs might be a good idea.

"This remind anyone of those anime characters that radiate that scary black aura that looks like a demon?" Ryan quipped as a very angry Kayne Beckett strode towards the conference room door Kate and her boys were standing by.

"Cute Ryan, he actually got me started watching a few of those when we were kids." Kate smiled. That smile fell from her face when she noticed the man walking behind Kayne, a face she'd seen before.

"Hey, that's the dude from Alexis's kidnapping!" both Espo and Ryan reached for their sidearm as Kayne appeared directly in front of Kate.

"Stand down and get inside the conference room, NOW!" Kayne growled. Kate glanced at her two friends and saw that Kayne had a thumb wrapped around the outer carotid and jugular on their necks… clearly Kayne was not in the mood to bandy about.

It took a little while to get situated in the conference room with the blinds closed. Kate, Espo, and Ryan sat at the far end of the table, throwing glares at Jackson Hunt as he stood beside Kayne.

"Well, I see you all know Jack." Kayne stated unnecessarily.

"What the fuck is that guy doing here?" Javi growled.

"Assisting me. Jack is now my primary intel and tac-prep officer. I'm glad I got the loan from the Agency." Kayne supplied. That made their eyes widen.

"This guys C.I.A?" Ryan blurted.

"Yes, meet Jackson Hunt, the only member of the C.I.A that I actually trust." Kayne thought that would quiet Ryan and Esposito, he held no illusions about Kate.

"Why did you torture and kill Roger Henson?" Kate glared as she spoke through gritted teeth. Before anyone could say anything Castle came flying through the door of the conference room, another manila envelope in his glove covered hand.

"There was a messenger that delivered this to me. The outside of the envelope says to bring it here." Castle panted. A quick glance at Jack from Kayne told him all he needed to know.

"Since you have gloves on, go ahead and open it Rick." Kayne spoke up, noting that Castle hadn't raised his eyes yet.

Castle carefully opened the envelope and extracted a single sheet of white printer paper with two words written on it: Look up.

"Look up? What the hell does that even mean Beck… dad?!" Castle visible paled at seeing his father in the room. Both Kate an Kayne moved at the same time. Kayne helped Castle to sit in a chair as Kate moved to comfort and talk to her fiancé.

"Wait, Castle is you son? Why in the holy fuck did you never mention that to me?! You knew I was taking this assignment." Kayne turned back to his old friend.

"I couldn't. After I helped to get Alexis back to the States I had to go on another assignment and I couldn't get any communications out. They were watching to make sure I wouldn't go off the rails." Both Becketts could read the honest emotions in his face as he spoke.

"Off the rails, little late for that isn't it Jack?" Kayne joked.

"And a hearty fuck you too Captain Beckett." Hunt fired back.

"If we can get back on track here, this is supposed to be about finding and bringing to justice Dr. Green's kidnappers." Kate grumbled.

"We already dropped the photos off for analysis and got copies to bring in. All we can really do right now is bring you up to speed on the players involved." Jackson spoke as he pulled a half dozen packets from his briefcase and started handing them out. Neither Hunt nor Kayne needed to read them, they knew all the intel by heart.

"First things first, there's somewhere I want us to go before anything else happens." Kate spoke up, helping her fiancé to his feet and heading towards the door.

"Any particular reason this bastard is in my morgue and still breathing?" Lanie was less than pleased at seeing a face she knew well from when Alexis had been taken.

"Dr. Parish my name is Jackson Hunt, Central Intelligence Agency. I'm also Rick's father." Jackson spoke up, but wisely didn't offer his hand. (Lanie was right beside a table full of medical implements.)

"That's actually why we're here Lanie. I want to see if we can prove that." Kate bit out, she really didn't want to have to do this, but the questions needed answers.

"Are we really wasting time on this itoko? There are other things we could be doing." Kayne half growled.

"Yes, we're really doing this. I want this done now, before we go any further. Besides, the evidence collection team is still not back from the field and the analysis isn't done on the photos yet." Kate turned back to her friend, then she felt the tug on her hair and a small pinch in her scalp.

"Fine, why don't you run these when you have a chance Lanie?" Kayne spoke as he pulled out one of his own hairs. "I want to see if pig-headedness is a familial trait."

"First things first, let's get this done, shall we?" Lanie looked at the small bags containing the hairs and quickly put them in a drawer.

Thankfully a comparative DNA test for familial linkage with two known samples is a quick test in this day and age. Twenty minutes later Lanie looked at Castle and Hunt.

"Congratulation Mr. Hunt. You're the proud father of a forty something year old man-child." Lanie sounded less than pleased.

"Great, Jack was right and he used acceptable means to get intel that let Alexis come home safe. Now can we get back to focusing on getting Dev home alive from her kidnappers?" Kayne turned towards the door.

"Dr. Green's been kidnapped? Kate Beckett what the hell were you thinking!" Lanie had met Dr. Green a couple months back when she started being Mari's pediatrician. (Since she was the only one Kayne trusted.) She actually liked the young woman and had thought about trying to set up her and Kayne.

"Don't worry Lanie, we're heading back upstairs and we wont be leaving until Dev is home safe and sound." Kayne vowed as he exited the morgue.

Back up in the bullpen Kate saw two familiar faces. One she was glad to see, the other… not so much.

"Hello Kate, it's been awhile." the greeting makes Kate grimace.

"Special Agent Sorenson, Special Agent Shaw, to what do we owe the pleasure of your company?" Kate keeps her tone neutral, but would rather not have to deal with this right now. She glanced towards her cousin and sees him talking on his cell.

"Why don't we take this to a conference room and we can get brought up to speed on this case." Shaw suggested.

"That wont be necessary at this point. I have all the help I need for this case. If it's decided that I need anything additional I'll make that call." Kayne spoke up as he walked past the team of F.B.I. Agents.

"Maybe you're not familiar with how things work detective, but we have jurisdiction here." Sorenson huffs, only to get slapped in the face by Kayne's credentials as he opens them.

"That look like it says 'Detective' to you Mr. Fucking Bureaucratic Idiot?" Kayne growls at the shocked Feeb.

"I don't know what you're expecting to happen here, but as the F.B.I. we do have jurisdiction on cases that cross state lines Mr.?" Shaw decides to try diplomacy and see if that can defuse what could quickly become a worst case scenario.

"It's U.S. Marshal Kayne Beckett, and this case has crossed over to an existing case myself and my cousin are working regarding a threat to National Security. If I decide I need your help, I'll expect you to follow my orders. If you aren't going to help then you get the fuck out of my city!" Kate pinched the bridge of her nose as her cousin looked like he was planning to alienate a potential ally is this case.

"Just where in the hell do you get off-" Sorenson's complaint is cut off as Agent Shaw's phone rings.

"That'll be your Director calling to let you know that it behooves you to not play games with me. I'm T.A.D. from the SEALs for this assignment and believe me when I tell you that I'm much better at killing the enemy than putting up with this bullshit." Kayne's voice was low and deadly. Kate moved towards he cousin, more to keep him from starting a fight than to comfort him.

Jordan was still trying to figure out how Kayne had gotten her boss to give her the order of "If he tells you jump, don't respond, just do it." She knew he had some major backing from somewhere, but if the Director of the F.B.I. said he was in charge, he was in charge.

"Our main goal is to try and find Dr. Devon Andrea Green and return her back home. I'd like this to be done without incident, but I don't really see that happening since P.O.I Alpha has his hands in this." Kayne was wrapping up his initial brief to Agent Shaw's team with the strict orders that this stayed in the conference room, no exception.

"You know, this might go a bit easier if we actually knew the names of the people we were going after. All we got from this is that there was a kidnapping of one Mari Sumner that was resolved and she's in your protective custody." Agent Sorenson groused.

"When it comes to National Security, that is a need to know basis. You don't need to know." Kayne's response might have gone over better… if he hadn't used a tone of voice more akin to explaining things to a preschooler.

"Kayne, why don't we call it a night? None of the reports we're waiting on are going to be ready before close to midday tomorrow." Kate really didn't want to have to stop her cousin from starting a fight with the gathered agents. (Plus, Castle had hinted at a nice relaxing evening he'd planned.)

"Fine, it's just shy of 1800 hours now. We reconvene here at 1000 hours tomorrow morning." Kayne conceded.

Little did Kayne know that John had included Dr. Green's current whereabouts in the second photo he'd sent.

The first thing that Kate noticed was that they weren't headed for the loft.

"Alright Castle, where are you taking me?" it was bad enough that he'd used a car service so she couldn't call driver. He was being tight-lipped about this, no matter what she did. Her phone buzzed with a message, she turned her eyes to her cell and saw the text was from Kayne. Just got back and tucked Mari in. After all this is done, we need to talk. I need your opinion on something. The message was something that confused her, was her cousin going back to active duty and deployment after this case? What's this about Kayne? She really didn't want any more bad news at this point. She just wanted to forget everything for a bit, she hoped Castle would be up to helping her with that. No worries itoko, I think you'll like my idea.

"And we're here." Castle's voice broke Kate out of her thoughts. "Is everything alright Kate?"

"Yeah, Kayne just told me he's home and got Mari settled down for the night." Kate didn't want to voice any of her concerns and risk putting a damper on Castle's plans.

"Is it just me, or has Kayne gone beyond just 'looking after' that little angel?" Castle couldn't quite hide the smile that was tugging at the corners of his mouth.

"Well, he's been the closest thing she's had to a parent for going on a couple months now… you don't think?" Kate let the question hang in the air and suddenly the message from Kayne took on a whole new meaning, a very positive one.

"Let's not think about that tonight. Let's just have some us time. See what we can get up to with our Caskett-capades." his eyes twinkled as he spoke pulling a laugh from Kate.

"Seriously Castle, using your artistic license to create new words?" Kate chuckled. "And where the hell are we anyway?"

"In a parking garage… and you called yourself a detective." Castle sighed.

"Rick, do not make me taze you." Kate threatened as they entered an elevator and Castle pressed a button. As Kate tried to peek at the floor they were headed to, she found herself spun into the door and Castle's lips caressing hers. The kiss was slow and sensual, making Kate forget all about trying to find out where they were. She just wanted to stay in this moment and let the fire that flared to life in her blood consume them both.

The ding of the elevator was only a blip in the background as Castle walked them backwards, still joined at the lips, into a spacious penthouse suite. When air finally became a necessity, the kiss was broken and Kate took in her surroundings.

"Oh my God! You got us the best suite at the Plaza?!" Kate gaped.

"That's not all my Dear Detective." Castle spoke as he opened the door and practically pranced to the table that had been set up beforehand. "I also got us dinner!"

Kate smiled at the flourish that Castle used when he uncovered the tray coverings, but when she actually focused on the food she erupted in laughter. He'd ordered their usual from Remy's and had it delivered to the five star establishment.

"Wow Rick, you really know how to show a girl a good time." Kate chuckled, only to be cut off by a kiss that had her toes curling and pulled a moan from deep in throat and had a liquid heat pooling at her core.

"Food first Rick, then fun." Kate groaned as Castle moved his lips down to her neck. "And if you leave a hickey I swear that I will cuff you to the bed and head back to the loft."

"Maybe we can have dessert first. I've just thought of an interesting way to enjoy our milkshakes." Castle husked, waggling his eyebrows for emphasis. Kate's laughter brought a genuine smile to his face as she took his hand and tugged him towards the table.

"Food first babe, we need to make sure we have energy for wherever this night may lead us." her smirk was devilishly flirtatious as she spoke.

"Oh God Beckett, don't tease me. You already stopped one moment of joy when you prevented Sorenson from trying to punch Kayne." Castle pouted, he'd really been looking forward to seeing how fast Kayne would've broken something on the Federal Agent's person.

"Would I really do something like that Ricky?" Kate simpered as she leaned over, at the waist, to smell the rose set in the middle of the table. She smiled as she heard Castle groan at her slacks showing off her toned and perfect assets. Then, before he could grab her to pull her in for another kiss, she sat down and started to reach for her food.

"God woman, you're going to be the death of me." Castle pouted as she sat down and began to eat as fast as he was able to. He nearly choked when he found out that Kate had toed off her heels and playfully ran her foot up his calf.

"I thought you said food first?" Castle tried to stop it, but his words came out as an almost strangled squeak.

"I have no idea what you're talking about." Kate sassily replied, then the demurely set her finger over her straw and removed it from her shake. She made a show of running her tongue over the straw erotically. She had to hide a smile when Castle's hands clamped on his burger, propelling the toppings out of the back.

"Shot too soon again Ricky?" Kate wore a Cheshire grin as she chomped on a fry.

"Fuck the food." Castle growled as he came around the table and unceremoniously threw Kate over his shoulder.

"Rick, put me down!" Kate half shrieked as her fiancé made a bee line for the bedroom. She landed on the bed with a startled yelp and looked up to see Rick's eyes dark with arousal and desire.

"Dessert before dinner? You, Richard Castle, should be ashamed of yourself." Kate purred, her own desire starting to rise to the surface as a positively wicked idea formed in her mind. It would help to keep the thoughts of their current (and potentially disastrous retrieval) situation at bay.

"You're thinking and wearing far to many clothes right now my dear Detective." the timbre of Castle's voice seemed to steal the air from Kate's lungs even as a breathy moan rose from the back of her throat.

Both somehow managed the buttons on their lovers shirts in record time and Kate simply yanked hers over her head and flung the shirt towards the living room of the suite. Kate then rose to her knees and slid Castle's shirt over his shoulders and down his arms as she sealed their mouths in a voraciously wanting kiss.

As soon as Castle's hands were free, he made quick work of the clasp on Kate's bra and tossed in towards their discarded shirts. As Kate reached for Castle's belt buckle a groan escaped her mouth as he kissed his way down her neck. He paused at the scar on her chest and placed a chaste yet reverent kiss upon it. Kate's groan turned into a loud moan as Castle's lips journeyed across to her rock hard nipple. Long strokes from his tongue were laved across the sensitive bud as Kate arched into the very pleasurable feelings.

She quickly rid herself of her remaining articles of clothing as she climbed into Rick's lap and straddled his waist. Castle was getting ready to try and flip their position when he felt the cold metal of Kate's handcuffs close around his wrists.

"Now I think I'll go finish my milkshake." Kate purred as she rose off the bed and sauntered back to their forgotten meals, sure to add an additional sway to her hips just to torture Castle further.

Kayne was just glad to be back in his apartment, he was actually concerned with the possibility that he could very easily murder one Special Agent Will Sorenson. A gentle touch on his cheek and a tired coo from the little girl in is arms was enough to banish the angered beast growling for blood and retribution, sending back to the dark space in his mind to curl up and sleep… for now.

"Come on baby girl, you need a bath before bed. Granny Martha managed to tucker you out." Kayne smiled. He'd profusely thanked the diva for looking after the little girl when Castle left for the precinct.

As he make his way into the bathroom he smiled, bath time had turned into a favorite of Mari's. As he prepared the little girl for her bath and took his spot on the waterproof kneeling pillow he'd placed there he started the water running and stopped the drain when it had reached the right temperature.

He gently held her as he washed her hair before the tub even started filling, using his large hand to gently shield her eyes from the tear free baby soap. (Kate had said how adorable it was that he, the big bad Operator, was so gentle with the little girl he'd cared for these past few months.)

As soon as he was done Kayne reached onto the sink and grabbed the little Billy Goat floaty toy that he'd grabbed for Mari. Kate had given him grief for getting that and the stuffed Billy Goat that she now wouldn't sleep without. (He still had the old one his grandmother had given him all those years ago after all.)

As he let his mind go through the paces of getting rid of the excess anger he felt he had forgotten one very important thing, Mari wanted attention. With a loud squeal she threw down her bath toy with her hand still attached, causing a bit of water to fly right into Kayne's face.

"Was it really necessary for you to splash daddy like that baby girl?" Kayne sighed as he reached for a towel to dry his face off. Mari just giggled at him and went back to splashing in the tub.

Kayne found himself envious of the sleeping infant as he stood by her crib. She was so innocent in this whole thing, not asking to be put in this situation. All Kayne knew is that even after this case was resolved (whenever that would be) was that this little girl would still need to be cared for. Just then he felt his phone vibrate to let him know he had a new message.

He looked at the text that had been sent when he was placing Mari in her crib and couldn't help but smile at the simple yet very meaningful two words the message contained: Request approved.

A/N: Decided to let the second category tag have some fun. The reason for this is that in the next chapters there will be events that will shake the Beckett family in ways no one could expect. As they say: It's always darkest…

A/N 2:Sorry this took so long to get posted. Had some IRL issues and a small run in with writers block.
