He sighed for the sixth time in under five minutes. Hiccup leaned back in his chair as he pushed the pencil away and watched it roll back into place. He sighed once more and jumped when a mug was suddenly set on the workbench.
"Sorry," Eira said apologetically. "Is there something wrong?"
He sighed, "no, why would there be?"
She only smiled and started to rub his shoulders gently, "Because that's the tenth time you sighed like that."
He moaned softly at her touch, slowly forgetting the question she asked.
"Well?"
"Huh," he snapped out of the daze she put him in. "Oh, well I guess I'm bored."
She hummed and continued to work on his shoulder as she peered over at the sketches sprawled out. She picked up one that looked interesting to her. "What are you cooking up here?"
"Oh that?" he grinned taking the parchment from her. "It's something that I had on the back burner for a while now." She raised an eyebrow as he continued nervously, "I had this crazy idea to fly with dragons."
"Don't we already do that?" she asked confused.
"Technically, yes." He explained further, "but this will allow me to fly on my own, right next to Toothless if I need too."
"When will you need to do that exactly?"
"I am not too sure," he answered honestly, "But I want too."
The laugh that escaped her made Hiccup frown. She tilted his head up and kissed him. When she pulled away she told him, "You're insane you know that?"
He smirked, "I've been told this a time or two."
"Just two?" she teased.
"Maybe more."
She hummed and then went back to her curiosity about his project. "So are you focusing on this one? Or something else?" She gestured to the rest of the unlooked pile of papers scattered around.
Hiccup shrugged letting out yet another sigh. "I don't know. The main reason why it was on the back burner, along with the rest, is because I have no way to test them here on Berk. At least not safely."
"Safety is important, wouldn't want you to end up no footed."
He stuck his tongue at her for that joke.
Eira did, however, went back to thinking about what he could do about his dilemma. She tapped her chin clearly working the gears inside her head. It was no good though because she was just as stump as her husband when solving this puzzle. "Well maybe getting out of the house will help with the boredom. And who knows maybe it will spark an answer to your problem."
Again another sigh, "I don't know."
Needless to say, Eira was getting annoyed with that sound. She pulled Hiccup up out of the chair, much to his surprise, and started to head to their front door. As they were walking Eira rattled off things her husband could do. In return, Hiccup rattled off reasons why those items were not possible. She stopped and put her fist on her waist and asked,
"Well, would you like to see what I have been up to?"
That got his attention and he teased. "You've been up to something?"
She laughed and nodded, "Yes, dear. What do you think I do all day? Sit around and wait for you to come home so I can serve you?"
He gulped as he playfully pretended to be nervous. "Well…"
Gasping like she was hurt by his comment, she soon tapped his shoulder. "Well, aren't you a jokester."
He chuckled at that.
"For your information, I don't wait on you and I actually been trying new things. Do you want to see?"
"Of course," and he happily allowed her to drag him towards the stairs to the upstairs bedroom. When they reached the foot of the stairs he stopped her. "Whoa, you don't climb these steps every day do you?"
Her answer left him concerned, "Yes. It's where I keep my materials."
"You could always keep them down here," he offered.
She replied in a scoffing manner, "And have my things look like your hammer thanks to Granite's overacting chewing. No thanks."
Hiccup turned and looked towards the stable doors. "He's the reason why it looks like a woodchuck gnarled on it like a snack?"
"It's his favorite chew toy," she cheerfully told as she made her way up.
"But why my things!" he whined.
"Because he likes you."
Armed with that new information he knew he had to find something else for the night fury to chew on. Following right behind Eira, he also took note of how she carefully took each step and held onto the wall as she did. "I'm going to have to build a railing for her," he thought.
When she reached the top she took it as a small victory. After seeing her celebrate he reminded her why they were in the future nursery. Her smile grew as she went over to a crate that sat on a desk in the corner of the room. She paused before pulling out whatever was inside.
"Now do not laugh at it. I'm trying my best to finish it correctly."
Curious at what it was, he agreed.
Slowly, she pulled out what she was hiding. As she did, she was explaining why she was working so hard on this project. "You made such a beautiful cradle that I thought that maybe I should make something for the baby too."
Holding it up for him to see, Hiccup had to bite the inside of his cheek so he wouldn't laugh at it. "W-what is it?" he choked.
Eira looked at the object a little confused then to Hiccup. "What do you mean? Can't you tell? It's going to be a baby blanket."
That's when he lost it. He laughed so hard that she was questioning her work and turning red. Yet he was able to state, "I thought you said Granite doesn't come up here."
"He doesn't."
"Then why does it have so many holes?!" he laughed even harder now.
She pouted and clung to the mishap close to her chest, "Because knitting is hard."
Seeing the tears brim in her eyes he walked over to her and pulled her into a hug and asked, "Why are you trying to knit? You always said you're a better sewer than a knitter. I mean you did make that dress that one night."
"Yeah, but your foot was able to rip that off me."
He chuckled remembering exactly how that night went down, "Oh yeah. But, you were really pretty."
"I ended up naked!"
"Still pretty," he smirked.
Eira groaned and rolled her eyes. She looked back on her blanket and huffed in defeat. "This was such a stupid idea. Why did I even bother with this?" She tossed the rag to the side signaling in her defeat.
Hiccup, on the other hand, bent down to pick up her work and examine it himself. He looked over at his wife and smiled. "You know with a little bit of help this would turn out rather nicely."
"Oh," she sounded sarcastic, "and who's going to help me? You?"
"Thor no!" he exclaimed, "I can't knit worth a damn, but I may know who can."
She was really suspicious of this and she also did not want to be embarrassed by another person laughing at her.
"Come on," he took her hand and led his pregnant wife back downstairs. "Let's see if we can go find Snotlout to help you with this project."
"Snotlout?"
He hummed in agreement, "yeah, I heard he's pretty good with a needle and thread."
"Forget that. His mom makes the best sweet buns on Berk! Let's go!" She pulled his arm, now leading him the young man towards the Jorgenson house. Hiccup laughing at his wife's antics.
When opening the front door they were face to face with the noxious teen, who was in mid-knock. Hookfang right behind.
Both smiled as Hiccup said, "Well speak of the devil."
"Excuse you?"
"Nothing Snotlout, Eira and I were just talking about you."
"Of course you were and who wouldn't?"
Before Hiccup could ask his cousin to help his wife, he butted in and his voice was more serious now.
"Hiccup we need you at the docks and quick."
"What? Why?" the couple was confused and concern. With the commotion going on and the front door being open caused the Night Fury parents to come out of their hiding.
Snotlout explained, "The twins fished Trader Johann out of the sea during one of their Loki pranks."
Everyone knew the pranks were an activity that Tuffnut started to help cheer up his sister after giving up her daughter. Most of the Villagers didn't mind them either, but Stoick made it clear that the pranks could not be done on visitors nor cause a halt into the production of Berk.
This was why the son of the Chief seemed so upset and calling upon Toothless so they could be on the move.
While saddling up Eira asked, "Is he alright?"
"Don't know," Snotlout answered, "he kept blubbering that he needed to see Hiccup."
"Then let's not waste any more time. Toothless." He locked his foot into the rig, but the dragon stopped his take off when everyone heard.
"I'm coming too."
"Wait, what?" Hiccup said very baffled.
Eira walked up to her own dragon and stated once more, "I'm going to go with you to see if Johann is alright."
Hiccup hopped off Toothless and went to stop her from trying to place her foot up in the stirrup of Dust's saddle. "Eira no. You are not getting on that dragon."
Snotlout, not having a filter, tagged into, "You do know you're pregnant right?"
She rolled her eyes, "No Snotlout I didn't. I thought I was just fat."
He was about to remind her when Hiccup cut him off. "Again Eira, you are not getting on Dust. You know what happen last time."
"Yes, but that was completely different."
"No, it's not," his voice was harsh and stern. "You are staying on the ground. That's final." She was about to argue, but he continued, "I'm putting my foot down on this Eira or the gods help me I'll separate you and Dust because I know you can't make it to the arena on your own."
She tried to put on a brave face, but it was cracking at her husband's words and he could clearly see it.
He sighed, "Eira I can't have you risking the baby's or your health. You understand don't you?"
"Perfectly." She then yanked the baby blanket out of his hands and coldly told him, "I'll just work on this monstrosity until you get back." She angrily waddled herself back inside her home and slammed the door.
Hiccup stood there for a moment before taking a deep breath and hopping back on his own dragon. He would have to apologize later. There were just more important things he had to do.
It was a couple hours later when she heard the latch to the door click open and then closed. She knew who it as and she waited upstairs in the chair for him to find her. She knew he did when the sound of his metal lag squeaked, but she refused to look. Her focus on the blanket she hadn't worked on, but pretending too.
Hiccup looked around the room and dragged another stool to where she was. He took a seat and quietly said her name.
"Hiccup."
He knew that tone. She was still mad at him, but he still stood by what he said. He couldn't risk their safety. "Look Eira, I am not sorry for making you stay here. It was for your own good."
"I know," she sighed, "but you didn't have to threaten me."
He agreed but smiled. "Would you have listened if I didn't?" He turned her face towards him. When she tried to look away he knew he was right. "You're too stubborn." He kissed the top of her hands smiling. "But I love you."
The blush that crossed her face boosted his love for her and for a moment he forgot the troubling news he had learned.
When seeing his brow knot and the concentrated look on his face, Eira knew something was off. "What happened with Johann?"
"First off he's fine. A little shaken, but fine." He paused before continuing, "It's what he was blabbering about that concerns me." He became quiet again, his brain overthinking. When Eira told him to continue he asked, "I don't know if anyone has mentioned this to you, but do you know of a man named Dagur?"
She thought about it; not really sure if she had, but said that the name might have been said in conversation.
He collected himself before he explained who Dagur was and the history that Berk and himself had with the fella. During the explanation, he did mention how deranged he really was, even calling Hiccup brother. Hiccup told her how he even betrayed the madman, but it was all to protect Toothless. It ended up being a war between the two tribes and the ex-Chief was a prisoner on Outcast Island. This all was brought up because of the information Johann told him. "Eira, Dagur has escaped from Outcast Island and stole Johann's ship along with a map of where he keeps some of his treasures." Before she could ask anything he continued, "He's going to launch a war against Berk. He is coming after me. If he is coming after me that means…" he trailed off and she squeezed his hand, hoping to give him some courage. "He's not going to get to you. Either of you."
The look on his face was pure determination and anger that she knew that she couldn't talk him out of going after him. Although she didn't like the answer she was about to give, she did understand his situation. "You need to do what you have to." A gentle smile crossed her face.
At that moment, he closed the gap between them and kissed her. One hand holding hers as the other entangled itself in her hair. He softly pushed his tongue into her mouth to deepen the kiss, which she gladly allowed and encouraged to continue with a soft moan. He pulled himself closer to her and his hand went from hers to her stomach. His other hand moved its way from her hair to her neck massaging the muscles there tenderly. Her hands went to his thighs and did her own menstruations on them. Hiccup only pulled away from the kiss so they could catch their breath. His forehead rested against hers as both their eyes were still closed and he whispered once more, "I love you Eira."
"I love you too, Hiccup." She kissed him once again, but before they continued she asked him, "Promise me you'll be back in time."
He placed his hands on her pregnant stomach and smiled at her, "I wouldn't miss it." He kissed her again convincing the woman of his promise. He wanted to spend any moments left with her as close as possible and it was clear that she wanted the same.
"Then what are you waiting for," she smirked, "go catch yourself a madman."
He laughed at her joke and kissed her before calling out to Toothless and heading out towards the other dragon riders.
Eira watched them take off while standing in her threshold. What broke her heart, however, was seeing little Granite trying his best flap his wings to go after his father. Dust stopped him before he hurt himself, but the loud whining and crying could break a stone man's heart.
"It will be okay little guy. They'll be back before we know it." She said this trying to convince them all.
A/N: Well sorry for the long wait. A lot of things have happened in my life, but everything seems to be going back on track. Anyways, looks like Dagur is entering this picture, but don't be surprised if things do not go down the same path as we all see from race to the edge. Please Read, enjoy, and review!
