The rental car was something out of a wet dream. Sleek, fast and worth more than Quil could ever dream of. His hands shook as he gripped the steering wheel tighter.
There wasn't one specific incident that could be blamed for what had to happen. For thirteen years Claire had been the little sister he'd always wanted. Years spent playing dress up and tea parties turned into helping with homework. Quil had been happy never wanting more than to see her happy.
He knew that not everyone understood. There had been whispers from some of the other tribe members in the beginning. It wasn't normal for a teenage boy to spend so much time with such a little girl. After a while the whispers and looks faded away. It was impossible for anyone to deny such devotion.
The only one who had noticed a change at all was Quil himself. In the last year he had started to notice things about Claire, things that an older brother shouldn't see. Claire had begun to turn into a young woman. Whether it was the imprint itself or just human nature it didn't really matter.
An innocent conversation while walking Claire home had been the final straw. She had mentioned that a boy at school asked her to go to the movies. She was thrilled. Quil tried to be happy for her, but he was jealous. Jealous that some other kid would be sharing popcorn with her, holding her hand. His reaction made him sick.
There was a letter Quil left on his bed. Words seemed empty but maybe someday she would understand why. A similar letter sat on Sam's doorstep. He would understand better than anyone.
The familiar green forest was a blur as Quil sped down the winding coastal road. The hum of the road fell into eerie silence as the road turned to air. In that suspended moment Quil's only prayer was that of absolution for the monster he was turning into and peace for those he had to leave behind.
