Mitsuhiko cautiously flipped open his phone as they hit a busy intersection and dialed Amarante's number. She answered on the second ring.

"Hello." Her voice was casual in tone.

"H-hi, Amarante?"

"Ah, Mitsuhiko-kun!"

"Is now a good time to bother you? It has been two and a half hours."

There was a very definite sigh on the other end.

"Yes? No, sorry, but would you like to talk to Haibara-chan? She is not busy at the moment."

Mitsuhiko nearly dropped his phone. Genta and Ayumi were now listening eagerly.

"Y-yes please," he said quickly. The information would have to wait.

* Conan *

Miki was sitting up very straight. Gin was standing behind her, seeming out of the picture, though he was constantly looking her in the eye when he got the chance, probably for cues.

They all jumped when her phone rang.

"Excuse me, may I take this call?" She asked. The police allowed it. Her phone was black in colour, not very shiny, though. "Hello? Ah, Mitsuhiko-kun!"

She gave Mitsuhiko her cell number? Just how confident was she? Haibara had given him her number as well, but this was a whole new level! Was this because she thought he was merely a detective kid? He hoped that was all it was.

"Yes? No, sorry, but would you like to talk to Haibara-chan? She is not busy at the moment."

There was another pause before she handed the phone to Haibara. Haibara took it and stepped back, away from everyone. She sternly told Mitsuhiko not to come and that they would be home soon enough, not to worry.

When he stole a glance at Amarante, she was smiling. Why? Her smile vanished when Takagi asked her about what she had seen. Here it came, her little tidbit of information. Miki nodded stiffly, as if understanding the importance.

"Yes, a bullet came through the window and skinned my knee. The trajectory was wrong to have been from the murderer."

"So you also believe the culprit was on the train?"

"Yes."

It matched with his information, at least. All the proof he had obtained told him she was telling the truth.

"How did you see the trajectory?"

"My knee was skinned too soon for it to be the same bullet."

Short, no unnecessary details, sounded more like she was an innocent passenger...

"Is that all?"

"Yes sir."

Takagi nodded and proceeded to work with Conan to solve the mystery. It was tough to put Takagi on the right track without Subaru there, but Satou appeared to pick up what Takagi missed and they solved it rather quickly. The fired employee even had the gun still on him!

Miki appeared relieved when he left.

"What's your relationship with Gin?"

Miwako had asked the question. Miki blinked a few times, then pointed to Gin innocently.

"Oh, him? He just offered me a lift to get my knee checked out. Nothing more."

She was covering for Gin? Haibara seemed unfazed by it, as if it were the norm. Conan probably had an angry face. This was the guy who had poisoned him!

"Amarante, was it?" She nodded. "All right. I will need statements from you when you are able."

"How about tomorrow afternoon?"

Satou smiled.

"That will do nicely. See you then!"

Gin left the room ten minutes after Satou. Subaru entered five minutes later.

"You want a lift back, do you not?"

"Yes please, since you are using my car and all."

Subaru had driven her car? Was he sane? There had to be tricks all through that thing! She was a high-level criminal! ...in a similar situation to Subaru... The world believed her dead besides him, Subaru, Gin, whoever had picked her up from the station, the professor, the Detective Boys and probably his parents. What was she planning?

His phone rang, distracting him completely. Miki discreetly took her phone back from Haibara.

"Hello?"

"Ah, Conan-kun!" It was Professor Agasa. "You know how we were researching Kuroba Miki, right?"

"Y-yes, why?"

"I found something interesting. It appears she was the cousin of that famous magician, Kuroba Touichi, who died eight years ago!" Conan shot a look at Miki. After thinking about it, he realized there was a resemblance there, and it was rather strong. Her hair was smooth, though.

"Oh?"

"Kuroba Touichi also apparently died in a stage accident." Do not tell me that was a murder! There is no way! Only a real professional assassin would be able to get away with that! ...or the black organization and lots of red tape... Should he consider that possibility? Did Touichi have any kids? Would they be asking him, too?

Miki caught his searching eye and seemed curious.

"...interesting... Anyway, professor, I have to go. Haibara and I will be there soon."

"What was that about?" She literally asked the question as he put the phone away.

"The professor was telling me what was for dinner," he lied. Miki smiled.

"Oh?" Her tone held amusement. She knew he was lying. What else was he supposed to do in this situation?

Slowly, she stood up, wincing painfully as she straightened her knee and every time her weight shifted to that leg as they walked out. She took Subaru's offered arm, in fact.

* Mitsuhiko *

They really did go to Agasa's house and eat dinner with everyone. Miki escaped as soon as she could, of course, but Mitsuhiko caught her as she was entering the Kudo residence. Her wrist was tightly grasped by his hand.

"What is it?" Her voice was neutral.

"Who gave you that hairpin?"

She turned with a smile on her face.

"Sorry, boy, but I cannot tell you that. It might get you in trouble."

"Okay, what about Kuroba Touichi?"

Her eyes went blank.

"Someone killed him," she whispered, "but that is all I can tell you. Feel free to tell Conan-kun."

"Conan is Shinichi, right?"

Her figure stiffened and her eyes were serious for a moment. He had crossed a line somewhere.

"Do not tell anyone," she said severely. "His life depends on it."

Mitsuhiko sucked in his breath.

"And Haibara?"

"I would prefer you not know her real name, child. That would get both of you killed."

"Amarante-san, you know."

Her eyes shut tight for a moment. She shook her head. He was not going to get an answer on this one.

"Anything else?" Her question sounded friendly, relaxed, too.

"Who are your old friends?"

"Haibara knows," she said shortly. "Is that all?"

"Y-yes."

"I must rest now, Mitsuhiko-kun, see you later."

She had been so calm and relaxed at dinner, laughing, seeming like she was perfectly fine, not up to anything. However, catching her like this revealed she had secrets, terrified of something. Something huge and scary that the police likely had no idea was going on, likely could not handle either.
