"What Hurts The Most"

"Quinn! I'm so glad you're back!" Blaine said as he got up and hugged Quinn.

"I'm glad to be back too. Sorry I didn't make it in time to see the sunrise with you, but we got home late last night and I had a hard time waking up so early in the morning," she said, yawning.

"I'm so sorry I made you wake up this early, I should've waited to see you until later today," Blaine said, full of regret.

"No, don't sweat it, sweetie. I couldn't wait to see you and catch up with you… First things first… How is your mom? Your email said she had been in the hospital?"

"She's ok now, but it was really scary…" Blaine said as he sighed and rubbed his eyes.

Flashback:

"Mijo, it's been a month since school ended and you haven't left the house at all. Go out, enjoy your vacation!" Lisa said as she sat next to Blaine on the den's couch.

"No one's in town! The only one that didn't leave town is Rachel, but she's working at that summer theater camp and doesn't get out until eight," Blaine said, changing the channel on the TV.

"Have you heard from Sam? Or Santana?" Lisa asked.

"Sam won't communicate with anyone while he's in Honduras. I can't wait to see him again, mom, I want to tell him that it was all a lie… Santana emailed me last night… Can you believe that her Tia Olga doesn't own a computer? She called them 'el ojo del diablo'. Santana had to wait until they went to a department store to email me, she asked me to tell you she loves you and misses you… It's the first email she sent me since she's gone and the first thing she does is ask how you are doing and that she misses her 'mama Andrade'… I'm gonna start getting jealous," Blaine said smiling and winking at his mom. "Oh, and I also know who keyed Kurt's car…."

"WHAT!?" Lisa said with her eyes bulging out. "She didn't!"

"She didn't… Brittany did… When Santana told her what Kurt did, she went crazy. She keyed the car and slashed the tires. She didn't tell anyone but she took pics and sent them to Santana," Blaine said, grinning. "When Santana left, Britt went with her family to Colorado for the summer, so I haven't had a chance to talk to her."

"Blaine! Stop smiling!" Lisa said, smiling too.

"Look who's talking!" Blaine said, laughing. He switched off the TV and turned to his mother. "Do you know when Edgar is coming back?"

"He should be back tomorrow. I wanted to go with him to Mexico, I didn't want him to go by himself, but he insisted on going alone," Lisa said as she put her head down and sighed. "It has to be hard losing both parents in such short amount of time, I still can't believe that Luis died in that prison fire... Blaine…" she said, avoiding eye contact with her son. "There's something you should know… something I've known but haven't had the courage to tell you. I know who killed your father."

Blaine frowned and looked at his mom. In his head he remembered the night it all went down and started to feel sick. His mother scooted closer to him and grabbed his hands and made him look at her. "Hey, I'm here and everything's ok."

"What do you mean you haven't told me who it was? They caught the son of a bitch that did it… I know who killed dad. It was that man that belonged to the cartel," Blaine said, confused.

"Yes, baby, he pulled the trigger, but someone paid him to do it," Lisa said with tears in her eyes. "Blaine, Luis killed your dad. Edgar's dad is the man responsible for his death," she said, no longer being able to keep the tears from falling.

"No…" Blaine said letting go of her mom's hands and standing up. "Why would he do that? And if it's true why did you hide this from me!? I had the right to know! He was my father! How could you do this to me?" Blaine screamed at his mom.

"Sweetie, please calm down, I was scared that you would have another episode—" She was cut off by Blaine's screams.

"You had no right! NO RIGHT! Does Edgar know? Why the fuck did Luis want dad dead!?" Lisa wouldn't answer, she just sat there with her hands on her face crying. "Answer me, mom!" he yelled.

"Luis was obsessed with me. He never liked your dad and wanted us separated and in the end he got his wish," she said between sobs.

"So because of you, I lost my dad!?" Blaine said with rage in his voice. Lisa stood up and her sadness turned to anger.

"That am not just, you're so fair," she said, slurring her words as if she were drunk. She stopped talking and then looked around the living room. "Hey sweetie, where is Edgar?" she asked, confused. "Why aren't you at school?

Blaine was confused and got closer to his mom and that's when he saw that the right side of her face looked frozen.

"Mom, are you ok? What's wrong?" he asked, so worried he forgot how angry he was.

"Blainesito, stop hesitating and go wash the dishes, dad will be here soon and he doesn't like it when the dishes are not done," she said, turning around and walking towards the door. "Blaine, where are we? Whose house is this?" As she said this, Lisa fainted and fell on the living room floor.

"MOM!" Blaine screamed and reached for his phone. "Please send an ambulance fast! My address is 4540 McKinney! Please hurry my mom fainted and she's not responding," Blaine said, crying while the dispatcher talked to hi until the ambulance got there. He tried to follow the dispatcher's instructions, he even slapped his mom and screamed at her, just trying to wake her up.

At the hospital, Blaine wished more than ever that all his friends weren't away on vacation—he really needed someone there with him. He was sitting in the waiting room, anxiously waiting to hear news about his mother's condition. With his knees up to his chest and his eyes filled with tears, he felt a hand touch his shoulder and someone said his name.

"Mr. Schue! Thank you so much for coming, I'm so sorry… I didn't know who to call," the boy said, standing up and hugging his teacher. The older man just held him and let him cry.

"Blaine don't feel sorry. I care a lot for Lisa and of course you and I am here for whatever you guys need," he said, patting Blaine's back. "Have the doctors said anything?"

"No, I'm still waiting to hear from them" Blaine said, sitting down. "I'm so scared, Mr. Schue. What if I lose my mom too? I don't think I can handle that." He put his head down and Mr. Schue put an arm around Blaine's shoulder. Blaine put his head on the older man's shoulder.

"Everything will be fine. You will not lose her, Blaine. Let's stay positive," Mr. Schue said. Blaine just nodded but at that moment he wasn't listening, everything was just words. He wanted to be sure that his mother was ok.

"Mr. Andrade?" A doctor came in to the waiting room.

"Yes, I'm Blaine Andrade. This is Mr. Schuester, my teacher… Please tell me that my mother is ok and that I can see her."

"She is sedated at the moment but you will see her soon," the doctor said, getting closer to Blaine and guiding him to a chair. "Your mom has an abnormality on her brain."

"What?" Blaine asked in a clear state of confusion. "What are you saying, ma'am… What abnormality?"

The doctor removed her glasses and rubbed her eyes, then put her hands on Blaine's shoulders. "I'm not going to sugarcoat it, we found a tumor on her brain. It is a small tumor, but we have to wait on the results to see if it's benign or cancerous… we should have the results tomorrow."

"She's gonna be ok, right?" Blaine said, sniffling.

"The next few days will be very difficult with the waiting and the process that comes after we get the results. If the tumor is benign we will just remove it immediately…" the doctor said. She paused, and Blaine took that as an opportunity to speak.

"What if it is a cancerous tumor? What then?" Blaine said in a whisper, scared to death thinking that his mom could have cancer.

"Blaine, stay calm… Don't lose hope," Mr. Schue said putting his arm around the boy.

"Listen to your teacher, Blaine. Remember: the tumor being cancerous is the worst-case scenario. It could just as easily be benign. So don't lose hope. Now as for the tumor, if it is cancerous then we will discuss the next steps IF it comes to that when we get there… for now stay positive and come with me. I will take you to her room," the doctor said, standing up.

"Mr. Schue, thank you for coming, I don't want you to lose anymore time here… I will call you as soon as I know something," the boy said, trying to say goodbye to his teacher.

"I'm not going anywhere, go and see your mom and tell her how much you love her. I'll be right here waiting for you," his teacher said, winking and smiling at him.

Blaine returned the smile and thanked his teacher. He followed the doctor down the hallway to his mom's room. "She's gonna be in and out for the next twenty-four hours. But for now she's ok. If there is anything you need please let the nurse know. She will page me and I will be here as soon as possible," the doctor said before she left the room.

"Mami, I'm so sorry for being such a brat and causing all of this, please forgive me… don't leave me, mom… I need you!" Blaine said between sobs, with his head down on the side of his mom's bed.

"Baby, this isn't your fault… I'm gonna be ok… Remember 'I'm a survivor, I'm gonna make it,'" Lisa said, trying to sing with a hoarse voice. Blaine stood up and smiled between the tears.

"MOM!" He screamed and laid down next to his mom, kissing her and hugging her. "I love you so much, please forgive me!"

"Hey, there's nothing to forgive," she said, kissing the top of his head. "I'm gonna be fine and this nightmare will soon be over… Baby, I'm sorry I kept the news about your dad from you… you have to know that."

"No mom, please, all I need to know is that you are still here with me and that you love me and that you will not leave me," he said, sitting up and looking at his mom.

"I love you so much and I don't even want to think about not being together, baby… I hate to do this but I can't keep my eyes from closing… I'm gonna take a little nap, ok, baby?" Lisa said, her eyelids closing despite her efforts to keep them open. Blaine kissed his mom's cheek and went back to the waiting room.

"Blaine! I'm so sorry you're going through this," Rachel said as soon as she saw the boy and ran to him and embraced him. "Mr. Schue called me before he came to the hospital, I was on my way out of theater camp and rushed to get here. Are you ok? Do you need anything? Is she ok?"

"Rachel, calm down, don't overwhelm Blaine!" Mr. Schue said . Blaine chuckled and hugged Rachel.

"Thank you for coming, Rach, I'm ok… I'll be better once my mom is home and one hundred percent back in shape." The last words he said between tears as he started to cry again. "I'm sorry… I'm just scared."

"Hey, it's ok to be scared. Come here…sit with me," Rachel said, patting the chair next to hers.

"Do you guys want something from the cafeteria? I'm going for a coffee…" Mr. Schue said from the door.

"Yes, please, I'll have a water," Rachel said.

"I'll have one as well," Blaine said with his head down. Their teacher shook his head, sad and worried for his student, but at the same time he felt better knowing that Rachel was there with Blaine. Rachel stayed all night with Blaine and Mr. Schuester came back in the morning to drive his two exhausted students home and he then came back to stay with Lisa.

Present Time at the Lake:

"Rachel was with you!?" Quinn asked, shocked.

"Yeah, she has been a great friend, Quinn," Blaine said, smiling.

"That girl has come a long way, a loooooooong way!" Quinn said, laughing.

"She was with me every day, when we got the results that it was benign, when they removed the tumor... She even cooked dinner for me, my mom, and Edgar when my mom got out of the hospital." Blaine yawned and stretched.

"In your email you told me that Edgar apologized for breaking you and Sam apart. Do you believe he's changed?" she asked before she drank from her bottled water.

"I do believe him. When he came back from Mexico and saw my mom in the hospital he broke down. He was already on edge because the day he went to the hospital was also my dad's anniversary. Quinn, I felt so guilty that with all that happened to my mom I forgot that it was a year since I lost my dad… anyway, Edgar said that Kurt paid him for information on me and Sam and to make it seem that he and I had a thing that night when Sam declared his love for me," Blaine said, blushing as he remembered the night Sam confessed in front of the glee club that he loved him.

"He did a really good job at it. That night when me and Sam saw you leaving with him, I believed it…" Quinn said remembering that night. "What about Kurt? Have you seen him?"

"Yeah, I saw him last week. I went to the Lima Bean with Edgar. He went to apply for a job and is now a barista there! Anyway when we were leaving, Kurt was getting there, he went up to us and said how good we looked together. He had no idea that Edgar had already told me everything." Blaine laughed as he remembered that incident. "We were in the parking lot, and Edgar warned Kurt that if he messed with me again he would pay for it… and he did!" Blaine said, still laughing. "Kurt called us beaners and Edgar punched him in the right eye, so don't be surprised when you see his black eye when you see him."

"Oh my God! I would've loved to see that!" Quinn said, laughing.

"He even fell on his ass," Blaine said. He was still laughing and holding his stomach, hurting from all the laughter. "He hasn't tried anything since then. Oh, Santana comes back this week… Have you heard from Sam?" the boy asked, trying to sound nonchalant.

"Stop trying to be slick, boy, you know you were dying to ask me that," Quinn said, winking and smiling at Blaine. "He's back, he came home last night… but he leaves for Kentucky tomorrow. I'm having lunch with him later today… I would ask you to come with us, but I don't want to make things awkward…"

"Don't worry, Quinn. I mean I'm dying to see him, I want to tell him everything, how it was all Kurt's doing, but if I've waited all summer, I can wait another week," Blaine said, looking at the lake.

"It's beautiful, Sammy, I love it!" Quinn and Blaine heard a voice coming from behind the tree they were sitting on.

"I wish you would've woken up earlier to see the sunrise, it's just magica…" The boy couldn't finish his sentence when he saw Blaine and Quinn sitting at Blaine and Sam's usual spot. He froze and couldn't talk. He was in shock, the butterflies in his stomach came back to life the moment he saw Blaine again, but the pain in his heart kept him from running to the boy and kissing him.

"Quinn! Hi! It's so good to see you again!" Penny said in a loud, obnoxious voice. "You do remember me right? I met you at the airport when Sammy and I left for Honduras."

"She calls him Sammy," Blaine thought to himself, fighting back the tears. He wouldn't move his sight from Sam's gaze. Both boys locked eyes and just stared at each other.

"Is this your boyfriend? He is so cute! Hi! I'm Penny Owen, what's your name?" she said, holding out her hand to shake Blaine's.

"He's not my boyfriend, this is Blaine, Blaine Andrade," Quinn said, nudging Blaine's shoulder to wake him from his trance-like state. After waiting for what seemed like an eternity, Blaine looked to Penny and shook her hand.

"Hi, nice to meet you, Penny," Blaine said. "Sam, how are you… I mean it's good to see you…" Blushing, the boy closed his eyes and cursed at himself for not being able to keep his composure.

"Oh, so you're Blaine…." Penny said raising an eyebrow. "Baby, we saw the lake already… Can you take me home now?… I'm still tired from the trip," she said, kissing Sam's cheek. Blaine turned his head towards Quinn and then ran towards his car.

"We need to talk, Sam. Meet me at my house at twelve, we'll have lunch there. Oh, and come alone, I want to have lunch with my friend and not my friend and his…girlfriend?" Quinn said, raising an eyebrow just like Penny did to Blaine. "Blaine, wait for me!" she yelled and ran after Blaine.
