Skating On Thin Ice
Part 12: The Referee
Wally and Artemis have been hanging out a lot lately. She doesn't know if she can officially call him her boyfriend, but she doesn't even know if she can actually call him her friend in the first place.
"Are you going to eat that, babe?"
Artemis cringes her nose. It's not that she's not use to his eating habit, she's just still not use to the nicknames he keeps giving her. Wally noticed it.
"Will you stop calling me babe! You're literally just one letter away from turning into a Justin Bieber song."
Wally smirks, "Why? Not a belieber?"
He laughed hard and Artemis rolled her eyes. Wally looked like he was about to choke, but Artemis still hid her smile from him. They both really didn't understand how all of this happened to them. They sometimes think the universe just crashed the both of them together...like how they first met.
Artemis's phone starts to ring, "Hello?"
"Who is it?" Wally whispers as he secretly takes the blonde's food.
She already knows what he's doing, and she's seriously allowing it for the sake of his "metabolism". She pushes the plate more to him, "It's my dad."
He stops for a while and smiles a little. Artemis continues to talk through the mobile device, "I know, I know."
Wally looks up again and the phone conversation seems to be done already, "Are you sure you and Lawrence are still good."
"Well," she hesitates to find the best words to describe it, "it's better than before. At least things make sense, you know?"
Wally nods without saying a word. He really didn't want to delve into more of the daddy problems since he can't even do anything about his. He asked her another question though, "So what did he want anyways?"
"See, I still have to do hockey. He was just reminding me when to go to practice and all that stuff."
Wally smiles at her, "That's really good Artemis."
She quirks up a small smile, "Did you get softer or something?"
"No I prefer myself hard," Wally laughs. (I could not help my self LOL! It would be a Wally thing to say)
Artemis fake gags and rolls her eyes, "You are such a perv."
Wally's still laughing.
...
He's walking back home while he spins the lightning bolt key chain in his hand. His face is emotionless now. His story is always the same. Every time the pages turns, the words will be about a kid who is misunderstood.
Wallace Rudolf West smiles, laughs, and goes on everyday because he sometimes imagines himself as someone else who is really happy. He sees Dick, Conner, Kaldur, Jaime, Roy, Megan, Zatanna, and Raquel everyday with a good smile on. That's one of the reasons he hangs out with them. Artemis was different though.
Wally opened the doors to his house and already heard one of the bedroom door slam to the door frame. He rolled his eyes, "Of course."
His first reaction is to go to the kitchen. Yes, he ate a lot in the restaurant, but that doesn't mean he's not hungry again. He seriously think he's going to be over weight someday, although he just pushes the idea to the sad.
Mary's washing her hands in the sink. The ginger grabs a soda from the refrigerator and stares at her mom for a moment until he sees her hands clearly. Her gentle left hand had a laceration on it.
The young seventeen year old rushed to her side clinging to her palm. It was visible that she needed it stitched. His eyes trails back to her emotionless face, "What happened?," his face became more stern, "Did he do this to you?!"
Mary just tells him to get her to the emergency room. And he did exactly that. He was still relentless by asking her many questions in the car. She caved in when they were only a few seconds from the hospital, "Wallace this was my fault. I was cutting tomatoes while Rudolf had one of his stress-yelling-moments." She shakes her head vigorously, "It's nothing."
Wally shakes his head slowly as he parks, "Sometimes I don't understand you Mom. Why is he still living with us. He's just a jackass who treats us like slaves."
Mary is still holding her left hand in place, "You have to give him a break, he also had a bad history too, Wallace."
He walks into the hospital while he mumbles to himself, "Just because he was abused by his dad doesn't mean he has to do it to us."
...
There's a couple things lots of people don't know about Wally. One thing is that he likes reading the Lord of the Rings series. The second one is that he keeps a gun in his closet.
Wally doesn't really seem like the kind of person to point out a gun at a person, but sometimes he has these little hesitations in his mind. Those hesitations are happening right now.
He blinked again and he sees Rudolf putting his hands up. The gun is so hard and distinct in his hands. Wally West is scared because he really wants to shoot his step father.
What's worse is that everyone was there to see it. Yes, they were in the streets and the police were right behind Wally. Everything seriously went too fast. The whole memory of how everything happened was one big blur and a small part of him is regretting it, but some part of him is not. Wally knows that if he shoots and pulls that trigger then the police is going to shoot him, too.
They've been in this position for a long time and Rudolf is trying to tell him something, but the cameras and countless lights are blinding him and he couldn't focus. His hands are shaking a little, he's just trying his best to hide it.
The police are still holding their guns up at them. Wally didn't really care. Although, he swore he saw a familiar blonde on the corner of his eye, but he didn't want to look. Mary was screaming to the commissioner about the event occurring now. Her eyes were wet with tears, and he still didn't look.
It was so hard for him to decipher what was wrong and what was right. His eyes felt like melting, it wasn't until his whole circulation stopped when a hand grabbed his shoulder. It was a tough squeeze that puts him back to reality.
Wally looks up to see his biggest hero, Barry Allen. Barry slowly takes the gun away from the young teen and pulls him into safety. The red head's body is still in shock and numbness is all he could feel.
The ending keeps giving me the chills! I bet you guys didn't expect that one ;) I really was going to call this chapter "The Sad Part" but then I sneezed and I thought of Barry for some odd reason and I thought why not call it The Referee XD Yup! But anyways I hope you had a wonderful Christmas! And I really do hope that you have a lovely happy new year! 2014 here we come!
And also the song "Perfect" by Simple Plan is sort of the song that I would compare for this dilemma that Wally and Artemis seems to have in this story. It's a really good song :)
AND AGAIN! HAPPY NEW YEARS EVERYONE!
