Jani

Jani entered the throne room to tell Kida that she had already shown Helga where she would stay and now that she is all dressed in her uniform and currently working. When she saw that Kida was sleeping in her throne, she decided not to say a word. Instead, she got the blanket the was on the other side of the throne, and gently placed it on her. She was about to leave quietly when she heard a soft voice.

"Jani?"

She turned around, "Forgive me, Kida. You were sleeping, and I should not have woken you up."

"It is alright," Kida sat up in the throne and rubbed her eyes. "Did you have something important to tell me?"

"The woman, Helga, is now settled and dressed in her uniform. She is currently washing all the floors of the halls in the palace."

"A very laborious job," Kida smiled. "Well done, Jani. She will be exhausted by the end of the day."

Jani smiled and noticed Kida yawning.

"Did you have a good slumber?"

Kida nodded, "Teeg, though it was only for a short time. I keep having the same dream occasionally."

"The same one," Jani was curious. "After all these years? You have not had that dream in a while."

"Yes," Kida murmured. "I am drowning. I feel like I am dying, and then I find the surface and gasp for air."

Jani decided to stay silent. Kida has had the same dream for many years. She always told her about, and she knew what she was about to say next.

"I feel like I am experiencing what Jonek went through before he…"

"Drowned?"

Kida looked sadly at Jani, "All this time, I have felt like he never really died. We never found the body. It could have fallen down the lava tubes, but I do not think that is what happened."

Jonek was Kida's first love, and his death affected her for many centuries. Jani wanted to cry at that moment, because she knew the truth. She couldn't keep this secret any longer. Jani had tears rolling down her eyes. She couldn't take it anymore, but she didn't wish for Kida to see her like this. She was afraid of what Kida would do when she would discover the truth.

She turned her head quickly from Kida so she wouldn't see her like this, but it was too late. Kida noticed her awkward silence and saw a tear in her cheek before she turned around.

Kida got up and touched Jani lightly in the arm, "Jani, what is wrong?"

Jani was already sobbing loudly, "I am so sorry, Kida. Your father threatened me that he would have me killed if I ever told you the truth. Your father is dead now, and I cannot stand keeping it a secret any longer."

Kida's expression grew serious and confused, "What are you talking about?"

Jani wiped aways her tears, "Jonek is not dead, Kida. He has never been dead. It was just a lie from your father who wished for him to spend a lifetime in prison. He has been in a hidden, secure prison in the dungeon all this time."

Kida was speechless. She had no words to say. She couldn't believe that after all that time of mourning and feelings of loss she was just hearing about this. Jonek was alive and in prison for a crime he did not commit.

Jani was sobbing quietly now, "I would have told you sooner, but you were in love with Milo. Five years ago, I saw that it would be of no importance to give you that burden. But I cannot live with this lie any longer. I love you very much, and you have the right to know."

Kida was in a state of shock. She didn't hear anything that Jani said earlier after she revealed to her that Jonek was alive. It wasn't until she came close from behind and touched her lightly on her shoulder that Kida snapped out of it, and slapped Jani.

"You fool!"

Jani was shocked that Kida raised her hand at her. She never did such a thing to her or anyone she cared for. Jani had her hand in her cheek that felt like it was burning. Kida grabbed her wrist and pushed her to the floor.

Jani was motionless and crying more than ever before.

Kida was furious, "You do not know what you have done! You kept this from me! How dare you!"

Jani was sobbing uncontrollably, "I did it to protect you!"

"You ignorant woman!"

Kida had tears in her face as well. She was pacing all over the place not knowing what to do next.

"You are fired from your position. You will no longer work at the palace. Get your things immediately. I do not wish to see your face ever again. If I do there will be serious consequences," Kida murmured in a more threatening tone.

"Kida, please," Jani was begging in her knees.

"Enough! You shall not address me so informally. I am the Queen of Atlantis, and you will address me as such!"

Kida walked past her and was heading to the entrance of the throne room.

Jani looked at her walk away and yelled, "Where are you going?"

"To see him," She said before she left.

"Kida! Your highness! Please! You will ruin your marriage!"

The doors of the throne room closed before Kida could listen to her.

Milo James Thatch

"But how did she survive that fall? Not to mention the volcano," Audrey was yelling in Milo's office and still couldn't believe that Helga was alive. The whole group was in Milo's office trying to understand what was going on.

"Apparently Baldek found her inside a small crystal shield. Like the one the Heart of Atlantis used to protect the city from the lava five years ago," Milo stated.

Mr. Whitmore then asked, "Did she have a crystal necklace during the fight?"

"Baldek said that he gave her the necklace after he healed her," Milo was confused and lost in thought to find an answer to the mystery of Helga's survival.

"I must talk to her so I can get some answers," Milo stated.

Vinny then asked, "Are you sure you can trust her?"

Milo sighed, "Honestly, I will have a difficult time to trust her again. But I know that she is sincere this time, and I am glad Kida showed her mercy and didn't decide to send her to the prison."

"I don't think Kida showed her mercy in having her working here. I think Helga is going to spend a difficult time working here while your wife keeps a close eye on her," Sweet added.

"Yeah, those are Kida's true intentions. When Kida makes a decision there's no turning back from it, but I believe she will see that Helga wants to truly atone for her past mistakes," Milo murmured.

Mr. Whitmore nodded, "Helga is a good woman. She has made some mistakes, but like Milo says, she deserves a second chance. I've known her longer than any of you, and I can tell that she has a good heart. She was just misguided by an evil man who eventually corrupted her."

Everybody was silent, except for Mole who kept feeding Obby some strange rocks and was getting excited that Obby seemed to like them. Vinny, Audrey, Sweet, Milo, and Mr. Whitmore were all quiet and thinking of the same german blonde. Mrs. Packard who was with them earlier when everything happened was missing because she was telling the news to her best friend Marge via the telephone machine in the royal kitchen. Cookie decided to join her in the kitchen to start on dinner.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.

"Come in," Milo blurted.

Lucille entered the room very shyly. Milo could tell that she was very nervous.

"Forgive me, your majesty. You said you wanted to see me," She mumbled.

"Yes, of course," Milo stood up from his desk chair.

"Well we'll leave you two alone to talk, excuse us," Mr. Whitmore and the others left.

When they were gone, Lucille was standing up and looking down at the ground. She seemed really shy.

"Please, sit down," Milo offered a chair

Lucille sat down, but Milo decided to be standing up.

"I gave you a job here at the palace because Mr. Whitmore asked me to, and I respect that man very much so I cannot tell him no," Milo stated.

"I am very grateful for you giving me the job, your highness."

"However, you should know that once you commit to me and Kida you commit to the city, and I wouldn't want you to end up being a spy or a mercenary that sends information to other countries about Atlantis and its crystal," Milo said in a serious tone.

Lucille looked frightened, "I-I would never!"

Milo felt somewhat guilty for talking very seriously to this woman, but he was just making sure that she wasn't a threat.

Then Lucille interrupted his thoughts, "I know why you are interrogating me. Mr. Whitmore told me about that evil man, Rourke, who wanted to steal the princess and destroy Atlantis."

When Lucille said that name, Milo flinched and turned away. That name still gave him chills, and he didn't know why. Sometimes Milo had nightmares that he was still alive and out to get him.

"So I perfectly understand you have trust issues, but don't worry you can trust me," She whispered.

Milo turned around to look at her, "You are dismissed. You can ask Jani what she needs you to do around the palace."

Jani then stayed quiet and didn't move from her spot. She only looked down at the ground again.

Milo found her behavior strange, "What's wrong?"

She then looked at him in the eye, "Jani can't help me because she's packing her things."

"Things? Where is she going?"

"I'm not sure, but the Queen fired her," Lucille murmured.

Milo thought that this woman was joking, "That's crazy! Kida would never fire Jani."

"Well, I was with Samie setting the table for dinner in the dining hall. It was not even half an hour ago when Ali came running that Jani needed Leena's help to pack some of her things. Ali said that the Queen fired her, but I'm not sure why. Samie told me that when I finished with the table I was done for the day. That is why I came here because you told me to see you when I wa—"

"Yes! Yes! I know," Milo couldn't believe it. Jani was like a mother to Kida. She wouldn't just fire her. Something was not right. He needed to find Jani to find out what's going on.

"Let's go find her," Milo headed out the office with Lucille.

Milo went to the servant chambers, but her room was already empty. He went to the kitchen, but only Mrs. Packard and Cookie were there. Milo smelled something and hoped that the lunch tasted better than it smelled.

He decided to go to the throne hoping that Kida would have an explanation for this, but he didn't find her there. Instead it was Jani, Samie, and Ali in the throne room. They were hugging as if saying goodbye to one another.

Milo walked towards them with Lucille following behind him, "Jani!"

All three of them broke the hug, and looked at Milo with shock and fear.

Milo gently put his hands on her shoulders, "Lucille told me what happened. What is going on? Why did Kida fire you?"

"Oh, Milo," Jani started crying. Her face already looked red from crying too much. "It is a long story."

"Well I have plenty of time. You won't be leaving until you give me some answers," Milo demanded.

Jani wiped her tears and tried to calm herself to explain to him, "Centuries ago, there was a man put in a secure prison for a crime he did not commit by the orders of King Kashekim. It was for the safety of the princess, and we made her believe he was dead. I did not tell her until now, because Kashekim ordered me not to tell or I would be killed. The council and I did not want to tell her anything after the death of the king, because she seemed happy with you and she fell in love with you. But now I could not hide it any longer, and I told her the truth. For lying all this time to her I am sent away forever."

When she was done she continued crying, but Milo was still confused.

"Wait. Back up. What does Kida falling in love with me have anything to do with the prisoner?"

Jani stayed quiet and exchanged glances with Samie and Ali.

"Because all this ordeal with the prisoner happened, because he was the lover of the former princess. They were lovers centuries ago," Jani murmured.

Milo couldn't believe what he was hearing. He had never heard that Kida had a past lover. He always thought the he was the first man in Kida's life, and now Jani was here telling him differently. Why did he never knew about this?

Milo couldn't help but be upset, "Where's Kida?"

Jani looked at him with wide eyes like she preferred staying quiet than answering his question.

Milo lowered his voice, "I don't want to repeat myself Jani, and I don't want to get angry with you. Where is she?"

Jani's voice started shaking with fear, "She-She went to the dungeons to find him and set him free."

He immediately raced to the doors. He had no doubt that Kida still had feelings for this man, and that made him furious.

When Kida arrived at the prison, the two guards outside led her inside. There the warden greeted her and bowed to show his respect.

"Your majesty, what can I do for you?"

"I believe you have a prisoner that I would like to see."

"Baldek?"

Kida frowned. "No. A prisoner that you have been hiding from me."

The warden was stunned, "I had direct orders from your father that I would not let anybody see this man."

"My father is dead, and now I am the one who rules." Kida snapped at him. "So you must obey my commands, or there will be serious consequences."

"Yes, your majesty," He murmured and lowered his head.

"Take me to him."

The warden grabbed a chain filled with many crystal keys from his desk and took her down the prison while passing by some prisoners. Atlantis was a small city, but there were people that still broke the law. Kida counted about twenty prisoners, one of them including Baldek who was sitting in his bunk with his head down. All of the prisoners were in a small stone cell with a bed and a small, personal waste disposal that Kida didn't wish to smell so she hold her breath as long as she could. The prisoners were imprisoned by normal, surface prison bars; these prison bars when the prisoners touched them they would sting back at them and they would be in pain. The sting was because the bars were protected of crystal energy to encourage the prisoners of not trying to escape. The only way in and way out was with the keys that the warden was holding.

Kida looked at the crystal keys. They were special keys used for the prison cells only, and the keys were all made of crystal. There would be a different key for each cell, and the warden knew which key was for every prisoner. For Kida, they all looked the same but there was one that was special from the others. It would be the one that would lead her to Jonek, her first love.

At the end of the hallway there was a cell to the right that was empty with the exception of a prison guard inside. The guard seemed to be protecting the wall for a strange reason. The warden opened with the crystal key, and Kida knew there was something odd that was different from the rest from the other prison cells. This prison cell had another lock along with lines of different patterns like the ones in the city when they light up by the crystal in the rare occasions that it was protecting the city.

The prison guard did not move at all. The warden put one of the crystal keys into the lock and the lines started to glow and move around until they finally met in the end, and parted the wall like if it was a door.

Kida entered the inner prison cell, and what she saw was unbelievable.

He was alive.

She did not want to believe it at first, but here he was in the flesh. He was sitting down and chained in the middle where the floor was in both wrists, and Kida could tell by the length of the chains that he could not move very well.

Jonek's head was down, staring the chains that were glued to his wrists. She kept walking, and he still wouldn't move. It wasn't until she knelt down and lifted his chin with his finger.

Finally, those dark black eyes stared back at her with a look of surprise.

"Kida," He murmured.

She did not respond. She touched his hair, caressed his face, and finally hugged him for the first time in hundreds of years. She wanted to cry but she held back the tears.

"I am so sorry," She whispered. "I did not know."

"It is not your fault," He whispered back. "I knew that your father lied to you. One of the prison guards, informed me that you believed that I was dead because everybody has been lying to you."

"I am furious at everybody for not telling me the truth of your disappearance."

"Do not be mad at them," He whispered to her. "They were simply following the orders of your father."

"My father died," Kida raised her voice. "I have been the ruler of this city for a few years now! Why did I not hear this sooner."

"The prison guard that has kept me up to date with things, Deltin, he has been a good friend to me all this years. He told me that he and the whole city was threatened by the king if they told you about me. Besides after your father's death, I wanted Deltin to tell you but I knew it was pointless. He told me that you met one of the outsiders that came to the city and that he is now your…"

"Husband," Kida interrupted. "Yes, I am married."

Jonek let out a deep breath. As if what he heard had hurt him physically.

"Why? Once, many years ago, you told me I would be the only man in your life."

Kida could not hold the tears any longer, "So much has happened since then. I thought you were dead. I was mourning for a long period of time that I did not wish to leave my room. I could not eat at all after I found out you were dead. I wanted to die, so I could join you in the afterlife."

Both of them were silent. So many things they wanted to say, but they did not how to start.

Jonek looked at her, "You have not changed, Kida. You are more beautiful than ever."

Kida smiled, and she looked at him more closely. His hair was longer, but still beautiful. He was thinner, but he still had a good physique.

"You have not changed as well," She blushed as she wiped away her tears.

He let out a soft chuckle, "Kida, please. I look like a corpse."

"Because you haven't been given the proper nourishment here. You also look parched."

Kida yelled, "Get me some water and a towel to clean him up! And start preparing for Jonek Hulbek to be released!"

The warden ran quickly out of the prison cell, and in just a short time he returned with a clean towel and a bowl full of water. Kida got the bowl and placed it in Jonek's lips so he could drink. Jonek took three large gulps, and there was still a bit of water left for Kida to clean him up.

"Besides you have been chained here for a long time," She continued as she was gently washing his face with the wet rag. His face, hair, and even his entire body were unclean and filled with dirt.

"You used to be a great warrior. You have been here for many years, so it is natural for your body not to be as strong as it used to. I believe you can still be that same warrior that you used to be. You will have the life that you once had as soon as you get out of here."

He looked at her, "What good will that life be if I cannot have you in it?"

Kida didn't answer that question. She looked at him deep into his eyes, "My father was cruel and unfair in putting you here. His decision was selfish. After his death I thought I would understand him more, but now I am not sure."

Jonek whispered to her, "Kida, do you still love me?"

She looked at him again, "A part of me has always loved you."

They were silent for a moment until he whispered again, "I do not want to lose you anymore. I would rather die."

One single tear rolled down Kida's cheek. In an instant, she hugged him. Jonek finally hugged her back. The chains could barely help him, but he tried his best to hold her. She buried her face in his chest and didn't let go.

Kida did not know how long they were in each other's arms, but it felt like it was a century. She heard someone clearing their throat. She thought it was the warden or the prison guard, Deltin. Her stomach felt ill as soon as she saw who it was that interrupted them.

Milo looked angry, "Who is this?"
