CHAPTER 12- NO ONES P.O.V
Silence.
That's all that was heard once the elevator hit the bottom.
For a moment Maddie was stunned. The girls and herself had one thing running through their minds; did that really happen?
Within seconds Maddie was up off her knees and running towards the stairs; towards Jason. She heard the girls running behind her.
"Maddie! Wait, you can't go down there. We don't know what's down there, wait for some help. Please?" Spencer begged her sister, while trying to keep a level head.
Maddie stopped and turned to face Spencer, Panic clear in her eyes.
"Don't know what's down there?" Maddie said in disbelief, she pointed towards the elevator shaft. "Jason's down there. Our Brother's down there Spencer and you want to wait for help?" Maddie yelled, fear clouding her judgment.
Emily stepped towards Maddie hoping she could get her to calm down.
"Madds, Spencer's right. We don't know if we would be able to open the elevator. We could make things worse." Emily said sympathetically.
Maddie stepped back from the girls feeling betrayed and scared.
Guilt.
'It's all my fault.' Maddie thought to herself, tears threatening to fall.
"No." Maddie said shaking her head. "Im not gonna stand by and let someone else I love die because of me." Maddie said in determination.
Maddie turned and ran towards the stairs. The call of the girls telling her to stop falling to deaf ears.
Hanna turned to look at Spencer
"She is going to get herself killed by doing stuff like running off." Hanna said angrily "we need to do something." She said and points to Spencer, "she is your sister; you need to talk to her." Hanna said in her 'no bullshit' voice.
Aria sighed and grabbed Spencer's Hand.
"We should go and try to help Maddie and we can make sure the paramedics nowhere to go." Aria said, she looked at Spencer. "Come on Spence you guys can talk later." Aria said.
Spencer sighed knowing they were right, but right now she was terrified.
Terrified that Jason was hurt. Terrified that Maddie may hate her. Mainly she was terrified of losing Maddie again. She sighed knowing she would have to face Maddie sooner or later.
"Let's go." Spencer said.
First thing Maddie saw when she reached the ground level was smoke. Lots of it. Maddie ran to the elevator.
"Jason!" Maddie yelled banging on the doors hoping he could hear her. Maddie jumped back holding her hand.
"Fuck that's hot." Maddie grumbled as she looked around for something she could use to pry open the doors. She spotted a metal rod and smiled.
"Hang on Jace." Maddie whispered.
She grabbed the rod and jammed it into the door and started to push. After a few minutes of pushing the doors final started to creak open ever so slowly. Giving one final push the doors opened just enough so Maddie could slip in.
The first thing Maddie felt upon entering the elevator was heat. The wall opposite the door was aflame and the ceiling looked ready to collapse at any minute.
Maddie stepped further into the elevator.
"Jason?" Maddie called out, the smoke making it hard to see anything. Maddie began to walk forward and tripped over something on the floor. She fell to the ground and smacked her head against the cruel metal.
"Ow." Maddie said as she slowly sat up, reaching up to feel the lump already forming. Pulling her hand back she saw it was covered in blood. Maddie looked around to see what she had tripped over.
"Jason!" Maddie said and crawled towards his limp form.
Maddie flipped him over and checked for a pulse.
She sighed, at least he was breathing.
She checked him over for any serious injuries. His arm was bent at an odd angle and he had a small gash on his head. Nothing life threatening.
Maddie started to cough, the smoke was starting to thicken and t was becoming harder to breathe. Maddie grabbed Jason's shoulders and started to drag him out. Once Maddie got him out she placed him on the ground and started to cough.
She heard footsteps coming towards her; Maddie looked up in time to see a head of dark hair before she was on the ground. Emily. Maddie sighed. Enjoying the feeling of having Emily in her arms. Maddie hear the footsteps of the other girls approaching. Maddie needed to check on Jason.
Maddie slowly started to try and sit up without disturbing Emily, but that wasn't possible.
"Em, Em." Maddie said nudging Emily's shoulder. Emily glanced down at her with a questioning look.
"I need to get up. I gotta check Jason." Maddie said soothingly, noticing the panic in Emily's eyes.
"No Maddie. Spencer's with him, they are waiting for the ambulance. You need to rest." Emily said sternly, fear still gripping her heart from when Maddie had ran off. Hanna was right. Maddie was gonna get herself killed one day. That very thought of that happening scared Emily more than A ever could.
Maddie ignored Emily and continued to try and get up. Across the room Hanna noticed that Maddie was trying to get up grabbed Aria and made their way towards Emily and Maddie.
"Where do you think you're going Maddie?" Hanna asked kneeling next to Emily and Maddie.
"Once Em here lets me up im going to see Jason." Maddie said in a huff. Her head was killing her and talking wasn't helping.
Hanna sighed and pushed down on Maddie's shoulders, signaling her to lie down. Maddie Laid back with a huff her head resting on Emily's lap. Emily automatically started running her hand through Maddie's hair. Hanna and Aria smiled.
"Rest or we are getting you an ambulance too." Hanna playfully threatened. Maddie remained quiet but kept her eyes trained on Jason and Spencer.
Maddie was obviously in thought about something, her eyes hardened as she stared at the pair across the room. Emily could feel the tension starting to rise in Maddie's body as she continued running her fingers through her hair.
"Hey Madds, what's wrong?" Emily asked continuing her ministrations on Maddie's head.
Maddie glanced up at Emily and gave her a small smile,
"Nothing." Maddie said with a shrug. "Im just ready to go to the hospital to make sure Jason is alright." Maddie said looking back at her brother and sister.
Aria noticing Maddie's frequent glances towards her siblings she grabs Maddie's hand.
"Hey." Aria said, getting Maddie's attention, "you know she's sorry right? She was scared and now she's afraid you hate her." Aria said softly, "give her a chance to explain." Aria said squeezing Maddie's Hand.
Maddie sighed.
"I don't hate her. Never will. Im just upset that she tried to stop me from helping Jason. That she was willing to wait, not knowing what Jason's condition was. He could have died Ar. "Maddie said in exhaustion. She was tired, both physically and mentally. Jason wasn't as light as he looked.
Hanna sighed and patted the hand Aria was holding.
"Aria's right sweetie. Let Spencer explain. She just got you back; she didn't want you running off again. Even if it's just down stairs." Hanna said, giving Maddie a small smile.
Maddie nodded and relaxed back into Emily. Minutes later the medics came busting in, one going straight to Jason. The other coming to check on Maddie.
Maddie was getting her head stitched up when she saw Jason getting loaded into the ambulance. She glanced at the medic stitching up her head.
"What's wrong with my brother?" Maddie asked nervously, afraid that his injuries might be more serious they had seemed. The medic glanced at Jason being loaded in to the rig.
"From what I can tell he has a broken arm, few bruised ribs and smoke inhalation. Nothing life threatening." He assures Maddie as he finishes stitching her up. Maddie sees the girls standing by the ambulance as they prepare to leave; she heaves a sigh of relief when she sees Spencer get in with Jason.
Maddie wasn't ready to talk with her yet; she need time to collect her thoughts. She wasn't mad at Spencer. She was confused as to why she would even hesitate to help Jason. He was their brother, isn't that what family does? Look out for each other? Maddie sighed, Hanna's words swirling around in her head. What did her leaving do to Spencer? Maddie has never seen her so…. Over protective. 'Im gonna have to sit down and talk with her. Lay it all out on the table.' Maddie thought to herself. That just sounded like a bunch of fun.
Maddie was taken out of the ramblings in her head when the medic placed his hand on her shoulder.
"Alright you're all set. No concussion just a really bad bump and some stitches. But just in case no sleeping for four hours and take some Tylenol for any pain, ok?" said the medic, looking for any confirmation that Maddie had understood what he said. When Maddie nodded he continued, "is there anyone you can stay with tonight?" he asked.
Before Maddie could answer Emily walked over and placed a hand on her shoulder.
"She's staying with me tonight." Emily said, the tone of her voice stopping any argument Maddie had dead in its track. The medic nodded and said his goodbyes. Once the ambulance left Emily looked down at Maddie.
"We have a lot to talk about Sir charming." Emily said with a small smile playing at her lips.
Maddie nodded and gave Emily a genuine smile.
"I know Ariel, I know." Maddie said as she stood up. Wrapping her arm around Emily's shoulder like it was the most natural thing in the world. Together they made their way to Hanna and Aria.
Hanna saw the girls coming and nudged Aria.
"How long do you think it will take for them to finally get together?" Hanna asked her small friend
Aria looked at Hanna and shook her head "no idea but it needs to be soon." She said and turned towards the girls as they walked up.
"So what's the verdict Madds?" Hanna asked
Maddie smiled "just a few stitches and I have to stay with Emily. Doctors' orders." She said with an eye roll. She can take care of herself. She has done it for years. Not to mention she was probably gonna stay with Jason at the hospital.
Hanna and Aria nodded their heads at the information. Happy that it wasn't anything serious. Hanna looked at Maddie with a smile.
"How about we do a sleepover tonight? Because we all know Spencer isn't gonna let you be anywhere without her after all this." Hanna said.
Maddie nodded her head in agreement, knowing that Spencer was gonna hover after all this. "Sounds like a great idea Princess. My house?" she asked already knowing the answer. The girls all nodded.
Taking her arm from around Emily, Maddie stepped forward.
"Let's head to the hospital," Maddie said looking at the group she shot Hanna a grin, "Hanna you drive." She said with a smile.
The girls and Maddie made their way to Hanna's car. Aria jumped into the passenger seat with Hanna driving and Emily and Maddie seated in the back.
Hanna started the car; she looked at the girls in the back, "Hands where I can see them ladies." She said with a smirk and a wink as she took off towards the hospital.
Aria and Maddie still laughing at Hanna's comment.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Emily asked confused. "Was that supposed to be a 'gay' thing?" she asked, half-jokingly.
Maddie shook her head, "nope, that was a Hanna thing." She said with a laugh.
Hanna just stares ahead, silently deciding to let Aria answer Emily's question. Aria turns in her seat and stares at the girls in the back. Maddie was sitting behind Hanna with her head against the window, eyes closed seemingly asleep after her wise crack at Hanna. Emily was lying against her, her head on Maddie's chest. Her eyes held her curiosity as she looked at Aria.
Aria shook her head. Could Emily really be that oblivious? She knew Maddie had feelings for Em, that much was obvious but she refuses to act on them.
Aria Sighed. "Nothing Em." She said and nods towards Maddie, "is she supposed to be asleep?" Aria asked. Emily sits up.
"Shit!" Emily says as she turns to start shaking Maddie. Before Emily could start shaking her, Maddie reached out and pulled Emily towards her.
"Don't even think about it." Maddie said as she tightened her hold on Emily, relaxing back in to the seat with her eyes still closed.
"We there yet princess?" Maddie asked, she was exhausted and wanted to sleep.
Hanna tightened her grip on the steering wheel.
"Not yet Madds." Hanna said trying to keep her voice even. She hated hospitals. Nothing good ever came from them.
Not having to open her eyes to see that Hanna was clearly upset about something, Maddie frowned.
"What's the matter princess? No bullshit." Maddie said, still not opening her eyes.
Hanna sighed, Aria and Emily smiled at her encouraging her to tell them what was bothering her.
"I hate hospitals." Hanna muttered. "Ever since…" Hanna trailed off.
"Mona." Aria and Emily said together. Realizing that Hanna probably hasn't stepped foot in to a hospital since her accident. Maddie sat up straighter.
"What happened with Mona Hanna?" Maddie questioned, she didn't like hearing hospital, Hanna and Mona in the same sentence. It didn't sit well with her.
Hanna sighed. Really hoping she wouldn't have to explain the Mona situation, or the hospital. Luckily for Hanna, Aria started to talk.
" before we found out Mona was part of the A team, we were following a lead on A. we were in a parking lot and Hanna was walking towards us and a car came out of nowhere and ran over Hanna before we warn her." Aria said, "We later found out that the driver was Mona." Aria finished sadly, knowing that Hanna was still upset that someone she called a friend could do something like that.
The car was filled with an uncomfortable silence. Maddie was pissed. 'I should have decked the bitch when I had the chance.' She thought to herself angrily. 'Calm be calm.' Maddie said to her as she tried to calm down, last thing Hanna needed was Maddie yelling at something she had no control over. Sometimes we have no control over what happens.
"WHAT!" Maddie yelled wide awake, headache be damned. "That bitch ran you over Hanna?" Maddie yelled, 'so much for being calm.' She thought to herself.
"Maddie calm down. It's not a big deal. We caught her before she could drive Spencer off the road." Hanna said absentmindedly, momentarily forgetting who she was talking to.
"Hanna!" Aria and Emily yelled in disbelief. Hanna looked at them in confusion.
"What?" She said not understanding why they had yelled. Aria motioned towards to Maddie. Realization set in.
"Oh shit balls." Hanna said.
Maddie just stared at them in disbelief. How the fuck did she not hears about this? Maddie took a deep breath trying to stay calm.
"That bitch is dead." Maddie stated in an eerily calm voice.
"Madds." Aria started but Maddie cut her off.
"Don't. Why the hell am I just hearing about this?" Maddie asked, wondering what else the girls could possibly hide. The rational side of her knew that it wasn't their fault. She was the one who ran off, but still why didn't Toby tell her?
"What else happened? When you were at the hospital Hanna, what freaked you out?" Maddie asked, turning to face Aria and Emily, anger clear on her face.
"What are you guys hiding from me?" She asked, hurt seeping into her voice. Emily went to put her arm around Maddie.
"Don't, Emily." Maddie said looking her straight in the eyes. "The truth." Maddie said her voice leaving no room for arguments.
Hanna sighed.
"Im afraid of hospitals because while I was there…" Hanna paused wondering if she should continue. "I… I saw Ali." Hanna said quickly, not knowing how Maddie would take the news.
The girls looked at Maddie, she was looking straight ahead. No emotion visible on her face. Inside, inside she was devastated, why did they keep this from her? The possibility of Ali being alive should have been one of the first things said.
"What do you mean you saw Ali? She's dead Han, were you dreaming?" Maddie asked evenly, keeping her emotions in check.
Hanna sighed. "I know she's dead, but dammit Maddie that was one realistic hallucination then." Hanna said frustration
Maddie looked at Hanna, "what do you mean realistic?" she asked, confusion and curiosity getting the better. Hanna sighed
"We were talking and when I woke up or whatever there was cup with her damn lipstick on it!" Hanna said. Maddie perked up.
"What did Ali say Hanna?" Maddie asked. Needing to know what was said even if it was just a hallucination.
Aria looked at Maddie sympathetically.
"Honey it was just a dream. Don't put yourself through this." Aria said sadly.
Maddie ignored Aria and Looked at Hanna the best she could from the Back seat.
"Hanna, please." Maddie whispered sadly. She needed to know.
Hanna sighed she hated hearing how broken Maddie sounded, but telling her could make it worse. Looking in the rear view mirror she saw Emily nod.
"Okay." Hanna said.
*********************** ***********FLASHBACK****************************** *******
The hospital was quite. Yet it wasn't the first thing that assaulted her senses as she started to wake up. It was the smell of a floral perfume. Hanna hadn't smelt it since Ali died. Hanna slowly blinked the blurriness out of her eyes and noticed a blonde girl in a candy stripers outfit standing by her x-rays across the room. The girl looked familiar, but it couldn't be. Could it?
"Ali?" Hanna mumbled in confusion, "They said you were dead." She said looking at the blonde in front of her in disbelief. How was Ali here? Was she dead or was she dreaming?
Ali turned towards Hanna and smiled.
"Yeah, I heard that too." Ali said quietly "but here I am." She said like it was nothing.
Hanna blinked slowly trying to stay awake. 'I must have a concussion.' She thought to herself. Looking back at the girl in front of her she sat up a bit more.
"What happened to you?" Hanna asked Ali groggily. It was hard to stay awake.
Ali smiled and moved to sit on the bed.
"It's complicated Hanna." Ali said "really complicated. Worse than algebra." She joked.
'Just like old times' Hanna thought to herself. Hanna sighed.
"What happened when you left the barn?" Hanna asked, "We all wanna know." Hanna mumbled
Ali smiled softly. "You already do." She said, "The four of you combined. You remember more about that night than you think you do." Ali said vaguely
Hanna rolled her eyes, something's never change.
"Where did you go… is Maddie with you?" Hanna asked sadly.
Ali looked at Hanna in surprise.
"Maddie?" Ali asked softly, "They say she's gone too." Ali said sadly.
Hanna looked at Ali in surprise.
"But here you are." Hanna said in confusion. If Ali was here why couldn't Maddie?
Ali laughs sadly. "Here I am." She says. Hanna sighs.
"Please just tell me the truth." Hannah said tiredly.
"It won't make a difference darling." Ali said sadly.
Hanna looked at Ali in disbelief.
"How can you say that?" Hanna asked sleepily.
Ali just looked down at Hanna sympathetically.
"Because I know.' Ali said simply. "You think the truth is some big shiny disco ball of purity?" Ali scoffed, "then go ahead and try it. Be honest and see where it gets you." Ali paused and looked down at Hanna and places her hand on Hanna's arm with a sad smile. "Telling the truth to the wrong person at the wrong time is how I ended up where I am. Take it from me; you are always better off with a really good lie." Ali said bitterly.
Ali looks down and reaches into her pocket for her watch.
"Gotta go." Ali says to Hanna.
Hanna looks at her sadly, not understanding why she has to leave.
"Where?" She asked, not really expecting an answer.
Ali walked back to the other side of the room. Ali smiles gently at Hanna.
"I was so scared of you were gonna die. That's why I came back. I don't care how dangerous it was, I had to see you." Ali said softly, looking at one of the girls she considered a sister. Satisfied she was safe for the most part. "You know I really should do something about A." she said walking towards the door, "that bitch is genuinely getting on my nerves." Ali said, sounding like the old Ali.
Hanna laid her head back down on her pillow. The last thing she saw was Ali walking into the Hallway.
When Hanna woke up a few hours later she saw a plastic cup filled with water with red lipstick on the rim.
'Was Ali really here?' Hanna thought to herself then shook her head. 'This place has some really strong pain medicine.' Was Hanna's last thought as Sleep consumed her again.
************************************ENDFLASHBACK** *********************************
Hanna finished telling Maddie her story. Aria and Emily having heard this before, still couldn't figure out if Hanna had been dreaming.
Maddie looked at Hanna. Could Ali have visited Hanna? Hanna's story gave Maddie a spark of Hope that Maybe, Just Maybe Ali was Alive after all.
Maddie took a deep breath.
"Has anyone else seen Ali?" Maddie asked trying to keep the rising hope out of her voice. The girls all looked at each other before looking back at Maddie.
"Spencer, Emily, and I all have actually." Aria whispered guiltily. Knowing Maddie wouldn't be happy about them not telling her. Maddie looked at Aria calmly.
"And you didn't think that maybe she was actually alive?" Maddie said to no one in particular. Emily glanced at Maddie.
"When we see Ali all of us were either unconscious or drugged up." Emily stated gently.
"They were just hallucinations Madds." Emily said sadly, wanting nothing more than for her friend to be alive and well. But they buried her body. She couldn't be alive.
Hanna, Aria, Emily and Spencer all wished that Ali was alive but they knew that she wasn't so they stopped believing what they saw. Except the night of the fire, everything changed.
"The night of the fire." Hanna started knowing that deep down everyone there that night started to believe that Ali may actually be alive. "The night of the fire… Ali pulled us out." Hanna rushed out.
"Hanna!" Aria and Emily shouted in unison with Maddie's well deserved "WHAT!"
Maddie looked at the girls.
"What does she mean Ali pulled you guys out?" Maddie asked in confusion. 'Maybe I do have a concussion.' Maddie thought. None of this was making sense.
Aria sighed, she believed that Ali was alive somewhere, but this was not how she wanted to tell Maddie.
"We were trapped in the shack and we must have passed out. Someone dragged us out; Spencer had gotten there after the building exploded." Aria explained
Maddie was confused.
"But what makes you think it was Ali?" Maddie asked cautiously. Emily sighed.
"We saw her. Well we saw a girl with blonde hair in a red coat pull us out." Emily rephrased, not wanting to give Maddie false hope. She had been through enough, they all have.
"But she looked like Ali!" Hanna exclaimed, she truly believed that Ali was somehow still alive.
Maddie sighed; this was all too much to process at once. Its times like this she wished she could go and talk to Ali. Ali had a way to clear Maddie's head when nothing else could.
Hanna sighed as she pulled into the parking lot of the hospital. Spencer is gonna be pissed that they told Maddie pretty much everything.
"Let's go see Jason and then we will all sit down and talk about this." Aria said, always the one to keep her cool in tough situations.
The girls nodded and made their way up to Jason's room. Opting to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Once on Jason's floor the girls saw Spencer talking to who they assumed was Jason's doctor.
The girls reached Spencer after the doctor left. Spencer turned around to see the girls standing there, a teary eyed Spencer sighed in relief.
"The doctor said he will be fine. We can go see him in a few minutes." Spencer said to the group. She looked at Maddie.
"I am so sorry about earlier. I was just scared." Spencer said sadly as she pulled Maddie in to a hug. Maddie returned the hug tightly.
Maddie released Spencer and stepped back. Taking a deep breath and looking Spencer in the eye and promptly smacked her upside the head.
"OW!" Spencer exclaimed in disbelief. "What the hell was that for?" She asked Maddie.
Maddie looked at Spencer.
"For not telling me that our sister may be alive." Maddie hissed. She wasn't mad at Spencer or the girls. She was mad at the situation they were in. they shouldn't have to go through this, no one should.
Spencer looked at Maddie in shock.
"How did you?... Maddie im sorry… But I didn't want you to get your hopes up, or our own." Spencer said in desperation. Trying to make Maddie understand why she didn't tell her.
Maddie just shook her head.
"Im going to go see Jason." She said and walked towards Jason's room.
Spencer sighed and looked at the rest of the group.
"You told her?" Spencer said incridously. Hanna rolled her eyes, Spencer was over reacting.
"Not on purpose." Hanna mumbled. Spencer glared at Hanna
"How do you accidently bring that up?" Spencer said sarcastically.
"It doesn't matter how it was brought up. Point is Maddie deserved to know and she would have found out eventually." Emily told Spencer. She didn't like hiding things from Maddie.
"Emily's right Spence." Aria started. "We can't have secrets between us or A will use them against us. And I'd rather no loose Maddie again because of something we could have prevented." Aria said seriously. She was usually the only one able to make Spencer think clearly.
Spencer sighed knowing they were right.
"I know your right im so-"Spencer started but was cut off when Maddie ran to them looking panicked.
"What's wrong?" Spencer asked worriedly.
Maddie looked at Spencer.
"Jason's gone." She said.
