Chapter Twelve

Daniel's POV

Susanna strides into the damp basement with a look of disdain on her face. She tosses down a tray of food and turns on her heel to leave.
"What's wrong?" I taunt. "Daddy not giving you enough hugs?"

She spins around, a hiss leaving her lips. "You should know better than to make fun while chained to a wall."

"Are you going to do something? Oh wait, Lucian gave you clear orders not to hurt the prisoner. And you would never disobey your Master."

She growls, a deep guttural noise, and bares the thick rows of teeth hidden in her mouth. I smile coolly as she lunges, turning and putting up my wrists. Her teeth tear through the metal with no problem. I jump away quickly, bringing my elbow down on her head. Black blood oozes out of the wound as she slams to the floor. I drag her to the other side of the room and put her wrists in another pair of cuffs.

"Now you'll see how it feels, you privileged little witch." I whisper, pulling the keys from her belt.

I make my way down the hall to Bella's room, concealing myself around tight corners when voices drift my way. Once I reach her door I use Susanna's key to unlock it. I enter and shut the door behind me in one swift motion. Bella is sitting on the floor in front of a mirror, her hand on her small abdomen.

I step forward slowly, reaching out my hand to touch her shoulder. She doesn't react, only continues to stare into the mirror.

"Bella." I murmur. "Bella, we have to go now."

She shakes her head, a small chuckle escaping her lips. "You'd think we would be used to being apart by now."

"Bella." My voice is strained. If my calculations were correct, her vampires would be here in a matter of hours.

She turns her head toward me slowly. I almost gasp at the look in her eyes. She's... crazed. She's not even here. She's somewhere in her own thoughts. I could almost bet that she doesn't even realize what's happening.

"Bella, darling. Can you look at me?"

The corners of her mouth turn up into a smile. "He tricked me, you know. He brought me to the place all alone on purpose. And he almost killed me then. And he almost turned me then. He could have. But my angel wouldn't let that happen. My angel would never let anyone hurt me."

Her babbling confuses me. "Bella, please."

"That's not even the worst part!" She shouts. "My angel left me! And then I found another angel. He was more reckless. He was sort of a dangerous angel. But he was fun! He made me feel alive when I was so empty. And I loved him. I love him."

Now I'm completely lost. Wasn't she engaged to Edward? Now she says she loves someone else.

"We have to get out of here. We need to make sure that thing doesn't hurt you."

She snaps from her thoughts, her arms winding around her stomach. Her eyes narrow. "Thing?" She spits.

I raise my hands in surrender. "It's going to hurt you. The more it grows... The more it grows the stronger it will get."

She faces the mirror once more, a much softer expression on her face, and hums as she strokes her abdomen. There wasn't much I could do to convince her to leave with me now, but I could lure her out.

"Bella. Your angel, is he Edward?"

She smiles and nods her head, continuing the light lullaby.

"He's on his way here, right now. He's coming to save you. To protect you."

"Protect me from what?"

I hesitate. "The doctor, his father, he'll help you... He'll help to get it out of you, Bella."

Her eyes squint and her lips pull into a sneer. "Get it out of me?"

"The fetus."

She stands on shaky legs, pointing her finger into my chest. "You don't know anything about my baby!"

I look down, pulling her hand away and enclosing it in mine. "I do, though."

I take a deep breath. She's never going to trust me again. "I'm one of them. I'm part immortal."
