Scene 10
THE ROOF OF THE OPERA HOUSE
(A statue of 'La Victoire Ailee' - the same as that which tops the proscenium. It is twilight. CYNDER and SPYRO rush on)
SPYRO: Why have you brought us here?
CYNDER: Don't take me back there!
SPYRO: We must return!
CYNDER: He'll kill me!
SPYRO: Be still now . . .
CYNDER: His eyes will find us there!
SPYRO: Cynder, don't say that . . .
CYNDER: Those eyes that burn!
SPYRO: Don't even think it . . .
CYNDER: And if he has to kill a thousand men -
SPYRO: Forget this waking nightmare . . .
CYNDER: The Phantom of the Opera will kill . . .
SPYRO: This phantom is a fable . . . Believe me . . .
CYNDER: . . . and kill again!
SPYRO: There is no Phantom of the Opera . . .
CYNDER: My God, who is this man . . .
SPYRO: My God, who is this man . . .
CYNDER: . . . who hunts to kill . . .?
SPYRO: . . . this mask of death . . .?
CYNDER: I can't escape from him . . .
SPYRO: Whose is this voice you hear . . .
CYNDER: . . .I never will!
SPYRO: . . . with every breath . . .?
BOTH: And in this labyrinth, where night is blind the Phantom of the Opera is here: inside your/my mind . . . .
SPYRO: There is no Phantom of the Opera . . .
CYNDER: Spyro, I've been there - to his world of unending night . . . To a world where the daylight dissolves into darkness . . . darkness . . . Spyro, I've seen him! Can I ever forget that sight? Can I ever escape from that face? So distorted, deformed, it was hardly a face, in that darkness . . . darkness . . . (trancelike, then becoming more and more ecstatic) But his voice filled my spirit with a strange, sweet sound . . . In that night there was music in my mind . . . And through music my soul began to soar! And I heard as I'd never heard before . . .
SPYRO: What you heard was a dream and nothing more . . .
CYNDER: Yet in his eyes all the sadness of the world . . . Those pleading eyes, that both threaten and adore . . .
SPYRO (comforting): Cynder . . . Cynder . . .
MALEFOR (unseen, a ghostly echo of SPYRO's words): Cynder . . .
CYNDER: What was that? (A moment, as their eyes meet. The mood changes.)
SPYRO: No more talk of darkness, Forget these wide-eyed fears. I'm here, nothing can harm you - my words will warm and calm you. Let me be your freedom, let daylight dry -your tears. I'm here, with you, beside you, to guard you and to guide you . . .
CYNDER: Say you love me every waking moment, turn my head with talk of summertime . . . Say you need me with you, now and always . . . promise me that all you say is true - that's all I ask of you . . .
SPYRO: Let me be your shelter, let me be your light. You're safe: No-one will find you your fears are far behind you . . .
CYNDER: All I want is freedom, a world with no more night . . . and you always beside me to hold me and to hide me . . .
SPYRO: Then say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime . . . Iet me lead you from your solitude . . . Say you need me with you here, beside you . . . anywhere you go, let me go too - Cynder, that's all I ask of you . . .
CYNDER: Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime . . . say the word and I will follow you . . .
BOTH: Share each day with me, each night, each morning . . .
CYNDER: Say you love me . . .
SPYRO: You know I do . . .
BOTH: Love me - that's all I ask of you . . . (They kiss) Anywhere you go let me go too . . . Love me - that's all I ask of you . .
(CYNDER starts from her reverie)
CYNDER: I must go - they'll wonder where I am . . . wait for me, Spyro!
SPYRO: Cynder, I love you!
CYNDER: Order your fine horses! Be with them at the door!
SPYRO: And soon you'll be beside me!
CYNDER: You'll guard me, and you'll guide me . . .
(They hurry off. MALEFOR emerges from behind the statue)
MALEFOR: I gave you my music . . . made your song take wing . . . and now, how you've repaid me: denied me and betrayed me . . . He was bound to love you when he heard you sing . . . (Starts to tear up) Cynder ... Cynder ...
SPYRO/CYNDER (offstage): Say you'll share with me one love, one lifetime . . . say the word and I will follow you . . . Share each day with me, each night, each morning . . .
MALEFOR: You will curse the day you did not do all that the Phantom asked of you . . .!
(As the roof of the opera house disappears, the opera curtain closes and the PRINCIPALS in 'Il Muto' appear through it for their bows, CYNDER conspicuously dressed in EMBER'S costume. simultaneously, we hear the maniacal laughter of MALEFOR and see him high above the stage, perilously rocking the chandelier. The lights of the chandelier begin flickering and, at a great cry from him, it descends, swinging more and more madly over the orchestra pit)
MALEFOR: Go!
(The chandelier falls to the stage at CYNDER'S feet)
END OF ACT I
HOLY MACKEREL! Talk about a crazy first act. Sorry I haven't been posting these author's notes sooner, I just figured out how to do it. First off, RIP Sparx. Second, I didn't cast Sparx and Joseph Buquet because I wish he would die, it's just he's the most annoying character in the entire franchise, as is Buquet in Phantom, so it seemed a natural casting decision. If you have any requests for movies, stories or possibly other video games, though that one will be rare, to put the Spyro Universe into, leave a suggestion in the comments, I'll see what I can do. Just note my biggest editing days will be Saturdays and I don't do any editing on Sundays, so bear with me if this takes a long time. At the end of the story I will post the back part of the playbill showing not only my plans, but three random reader suggestions. Now that that's over, enjoy the intermission and Act II will start off soon!
