Warm morning light seeped into his room through the gap in his curtains. He turned over in his bed, wanting to sleep a little longer, wishing for the wonderful dream he was having to last just a moment more. He tossed around trying to find the comfortable position he had originally been in with no luck. Until at last he gave in and reluctantly sat up, shielding his eyes from the light. A warm feeling lingered somewhere in his chest. He rubbed at his dark blue eyes lazily. There was something he was forgetting, but he couldn't remember exactly what that was.
Meiko was in the kitchen already eating breakfast. The aroma of fresh brewed coffee wafted through the room. She debated waking Kaito, but then decided it wasn't worth the trouble. She slid her bowl aside, resting her head down on the table; she let out a long sigh.
Maybe she had made a mistake.
Kaito was the sweetest guy she knew, a bit sickeningly sweet for her tastes sometimes. Honestly, he was probably the only super sweet thing that she could tolerate. But she felt like he deserved better. He deserved someone who could be just as caring and patient as he was and someone who could love him with all their heart the way that she knew he loved her.
Despite all this, she felt conflicted because she also wanted to be the one for him. She wanted to be the one who made him smile and laugh. And she wanted to be the one who stood beside him to support him. But she wasn't sure she could do all that…
Another sigh escaped her lips. She felt pathetic for even thinking so hard about this. She lifted her head and slid her hand through her milk chocolate hair. Her appetite now gone, she got up to put the dishes away.
Suddenly a loud thud resounded from down the narrow hallway. There were several bumping sounds and a crash followed by a frightened squeal.
"Meiko's going to kill me!"
No doubt, Kaito had just scrambled out of bed and was being extra clumsy this morning.
Meiko rolled her eyes, smirking. "I'm not that scary, am I?" she muttered under her breath.
His loud footsteps thundered down the hallway as he ran toward the kitchen. Meiko turned her head back to see what he was doing; placing the dish she had just washed out to dry.
The blue haired young man ran into the kitchen and his dark eyes lit up just as he caught a glimpse of her. Suddenly, before she had time to even ask what that crashing sound earlier was, he grabbed hold of her, burying his face in the nape of her neck.
"Meiko." He sighed, his breath lightly tickling her. ". . .Mine."
She could practically hear the goofy smile in his voice.
"Kaito. . ." She began, staring down at his pajamas. "Go get changed."
"Are you just trying to kill the mood?" He huffed, reluctantly letting go, though still smiling brightly. "Fiiiine, I'll go."
The pair met up with their new part-timer, Miku, just in front of their work place. She smiled and waved excitedly as they walked over.
"Hey, you guys, how's it going?" she asked, though not actually giving them any time to answer. She stared at them eagerly. "I got the boss's permission to sing today, but I wanted to make sure it was okay with you two first." Her teal eyes shone brightly with anticipation.
"Sure! That's a great idea, actually." Kaito answered, smiling and patting her head.
"Fine by us, sweetie." Meiko added as she herded them all inside, upon noticing how Miku kept sniffling and wiping her reddened nose on her sleeve.
The day passed by quickly and at last it was the spunky teen's time to shine. Miku stood up on stage a bit nervously at first; clutching the microphone tightly in both hands, she seemed to be regretting her decision. Kaito and Meiko smiled up at her from the bar counter, almost like loving parents, and a small smile began spreading across her face. She straightened herself out, getting into position as the music began playing.
"I am the number one princess in the world!" She began.
Meiko and Kaito stared dumbfounded from their spot behind the bar counter, this was not what they were expecting at all. Miku was getting really into the role, swaying her hips coquettishly and pointing outwards to the audience as she demanded her needs and wants through song. Her high, airy voice was charming and made the room seem brighter, more lively. The dance she made up to accompany her song had her moving around the stage and waving her arms.
She was near the end of her song and she enthusiastically sang out "Hey, baby!" as she pointed to a random person in the crowd. Her eyes momentarily fleeted to the person she pointed out and saw familiar pink tresses and bright blue eyes staring back at her and suddenly her eyes widened and her cheeks blossomed bright pink and all the vigor she had just had drained out of her, replaced only by embarrassment. The person she had pointed to was none other than Luka.
The teen's final note, a simple "Ah," came out as nothing more than a squeak and she bounded off the stage, using her long teal twin tails to cover her reddened face.
Meiko and Kaito met her backstage, having already deciphered what had happened up there they simply patted her back sympathetically.
"Hey, there's no need to be embarrassed, sweetie." Meiko began, holding back a smile. "You were singing beautifully and your dance was adorable."
Miku lifted her head. "It's not that, but what if Luka thinks I'm a selfish brat or something!" Miku whined, pulling at her long teal ponytails.
Kaito laughed. "I'm sure she won't think that, Miku," he assured her. "I've gotta get back to the counter, though. Someone needs to be tending it!" He walked off leaving the two girls alone.
"Why don't you go talk to her?" Meiko nudged Miku with her elbow, smirking.
"I-I don't think that's such a great idea. . ." Miku trailed off, twiddling her thumbs. "And I think I saw her leaving already. . ."
"Well, alright then." Meiko smiled. "You just get back on stage whenever you feel ready, okay?"
Miku nodded, but grabbed hold of Meiko's sleeve before she could leave.
Suddenly the teen's expression changed; a somewhat mischievous smirk now on her lips. "Something happened between you and Kaito didn't it?" There was a sparkle in her teal eyes as she stared at the older woman expectantly.
Meiko stood staring back for a moment. "Oh, shut up." Meiko laughed, ruffling Miku's hair as she left the room.
"I know something's up!" Miku called back, smoothing her hair back into place. "You can't hide from me!"
"What was Miku yelling about just now?" Kaito asked as Meiko took her place at the counter again.
Meiko stole a sideways glance at him before replying, simply. "Oh, nothing."
