Chapter 12

Captain Worf sits quietly at his desk, although it has been a few weeks now since he found himself in this reality, he still cannot get used to considering the room he is in as his room, nor the desk.

The captain is thoughtful and observes a photo of his family, he knows, in his heart, that this reality is "wrong" but the last weeks with Jadzia, Daria and the twins were the most beautiful of his life and, despite the twins not let him sleep more than two hours a night, he doesn't think he's ever been so happy. Part of him wants Jadzia and O'Brien to fail and that they cannot find a way to go back and re-establish the timeline.

After all, even if they succeeded, both the Federation and the Klingon empire have not yet decided what to do. Somehow Worf feels that the decision is also a political matter: some of the people, who have to decide, know that in the other temporal reality they would not have the same power and so they are not too willing to give up.

Worf shakes his head, he will never understand political issues.

For their part, Jadzia and O'Brien haven't gived up and still looking for a solution but both have the feeling of having taken two steps back for every step forward.

But the last week, thanks to an intuition of Jadzia and a technical modification made by the Chief, seems to be more productive. Both are confident of success even if O'Brien, looking at his friend's wife, has often wondered whether to find a way to go back to restore the right timeline, is the right thing to do.

It is the same question that assaults Julian every time he observes Kira and every time he is joking with Jadzia, in the last few weeks he has observed her and maybe the captain will not remember the last five years but it seems that between him and Jadzia things are not changed at all. Julian smiles at the thought of the day that Worf and Jadzia present themselves together in the infirmary and at subsequent times that he had to give some mild painkillers to his friend. As a doctor he had seen every kind of thing but he had to admit that the Klingon way was one of the most intriguing of considering sex.

And then there is Zyhal, in the last five years she had been a very important presence for the whole base, her tireless assistance and her smile, even in the darkest moments, had been for him and for the others a shelter and, even if he struggles, Julian cannot imagine the station without her.

Meanwhile, Kira and Garak, who in recent weeks is even more convinced that turning back is not right for any of them and especially for Zyhal, have done all the possible research on the Bajoran that accidentally saved the life of Zyhal and they are more and more convinced that was not a case at all. On the Bajoran, in fact, arrived on the station mysteriously a few days before the evacuation, they did not find any evidence either on the base or on the planet, as if before his arrival he had never existed.

The only doubt that assails Garak is how Gulak could find the key episode, how he managed to choose among many alternatives the right one, and he was slowly convinced that the scientist must have done more tests and therefore he is more and more convinced that perhaps not even the reality remembered by the captain is the "right" one.
