CHAPTER 12

"If you abandon us," Jack began saying to his crew. He looked to Death; she shook her head. "Either way, let's get a move on."

The group of three climbed into the longboat with the waiting crewman. They began rowing to the cliff, mentally preparing themselves for the climb. The group slightly jolted as the dinghy came to a stop on the rocks. "Thank you, Fig," Jack said.

The man rolled his eyes, never having understood the nickname given to him by the captain. "You're welcome, sir," he quietly stated.

The trio hopped from the rowboat and landed in the knee deep water. They waded through the ocean, Jack in the lead. Death placed her hands on the rocks and looked at Angelica.

"Do…do we have a chance of dying?" the Spanish woman asked warily.

"Eh," Death replied, looking down to the rocks now a few feet below them. She looked back at Angelica, "There's always a chance of dying."

"Great," Angelica muttered. She continued climbing.

Rocks shifted under the new pressure being placed upon them. Despite the angry rocks, the pirates continued, pressing on. Angelica grabbed a rock and tried to pull herself up. A quiet crack attacked her. The rock slid out and fell. She screamed as he tried to find her grip before she followed the rock to the waves below.

"Angelica!" Jack yelled from above.

Angelica looked up and nodded, again beginning her ascent up the cliff. "I thought you said no one could die when they're with you," she snarled at Death.

"You can't," she smirked, "but if you fall from here, you'll wish you were." Death slightly sped up, attempting to end the conversation.

Angelica would not be silenced that easily. She hurried to catch Death. "What will you do when Barbossa shows up?"

"Doesn't matter," she answered.

"Yes, it does," Angelica replied.

"Hurry up!" Jack commanded, already at the top. "Stop talking!"

The two women hastened. "I'll kill them all," Death said under her breath.

Angelica passed Death and put her hand on the grass on top of the ledge. Jack took it in his and hauled her to her feet. She stumbled for a second then got her footing. She breathed heavily as she watched for Death's hand. It appeared.

The cracked earth was unstable under her hand, and she could feel it. Not caring, Death began heaving herself up. The rock crumbled. She remained silent, not a sound escaping her lips. Just before she reached the point of no return, Captain Sparrow grabbed her hand, "Come, come, dear. We don't have all day." He helped her up and over. "Really, love, you should try being more careful."

Death rolled her eyes.

"Where to?" Jack asked.

She began to lead the way, no answer.

"I hate it when she does this," Jack grumbled.

"Does what?" Angelica asked.

"Does things without reason," Jack said sullenly. "Doesn't answer questions."

"I can hear you," Death said over her shoulder.

The two following pirates lowered their voices. "She doesn't answer your questions either?" Angelica inquired.

"Almost never," Jack said.

Angelica hushed in thought. "Would you say that you answer questions?"

"I think so," Jack said proudly.

"Would you answer a question for me, Jack?" Angelica asked.

"Of course, love," Jack stated.

"What were the two of you doing?" Angelica asked.

"What? Who? When?" Jack paused. "What?"

"You and," her voice changed to disgust as she motioned to Death, "her."

Jack looked at her in shock. "She told you about that?"

"No, I asked." She sighed, "no answer." She smiled. "But you said you'd answer me."

"Uh…um…" Jack paused. "Well, love, you see-"

"Shut it," Death whispered. "They're over there."

The three peered into the valley. "They've gotten themselves cornered in a death trap. Why?" Angelica asked.

"They didn't expect anybody else to find it," Death said.

"Well, then let's go get them!" Jack began to stand. Death pulled him back down. "What are you doing? The treasure is right there! It's ours for the taking!"

"Shut up!" Death whispered harshly. "Barbossa is almost here. We won't have time."

"Master Scrum," Barbossa said.

"Aye, captain," Scrum replied.

"Do you know what that is?" the captain questioned, pointing to an island.

"I…I'm guessing that's the island, sir," Scrum answered.

Barbossa laughed. "Do you know what awaits us there?"

Scrum smiled. "The treasure."

"Aye, the treasure." Barbossa took the wheel.

Ocean water smacked against the Queen Anne's Revenge as it sped toward the island. The spit of land grew larger. A slight breezed brought the smell of the salty sea to the captain's senses. He smiled. His treasure was so close he could almost taste it.

A movement above caught his eye. The cabin boy was swinging down from the crow's nest. He landed on his feet with a loud thud. After regaining his balance, he began to run toward Barbossa. "Captain," he said.

"Lad?" Barbossa responded.

"We've spotted two ships," he began. "One is in the bay. The other is by the cliff."

Barbossa looked around. "Sparrow?"

"There aren't any black sails," the boy answered.

The captain nodded. "We go there first."

The ship shifted its course. It crashed against the waves, making its way to the island.

"What will you do?" the young boy asked.

Barbossa laughed quietly. "We will do what we do best."

The captain stopped speaking as they closed in on the Second Voyage. The anchor of the smaller ship held it in place.

"Ready the cannons," Captain Barbossa commanded.

"But, sir," the lad began, "will you not just grab the men like usual?"

Barbossa turned to look at him. "They may already have someone on the island. If that be the case, I want him to have no escape."

The young man nodded and went below, calling the commands of the captain. As the ships entered the firing range, Barbossa grabbed his sword. He watched, smiling, as the crew of the Second Voyage was yanked from their feet and suspended in the air.

"Well, how close is he?" Jack asked.

"Not-" Death's answer was cut off by the loud roar of cannon fire.

"I know those guns," Angelica said.

Death nodded. "He's here." Death then stood and began to run back to the cliff that they had recently scaled. The others followed shortly after.

Jack and Angelica could hardly catch Death as she sprinted through the trees and other vegetation that inhabited the island. Branches, knocked aside by Death so she could get by, slapped Jack in the face as the momentum shot them backward. "Watch it!" he shouted to the redheaded lady.

"Then hurry up!" she yelled in reply.

At long last, Jack and Angelica burst through to the clearing just before the ledge. Death was already there, lying on her stomach. She peered over the cliff to see the ship and the crew that they had left.

Jack dove onto his stomach as well and slid beside her. Angelica did the same. The trio all looked over.

They were able to hear but unable to see the cannons penetrating the wood of the Second Voyage. "Glad we didn't sail on the Pearl?" Death taunted.

Jack did not answer. He slightly tilted his head, sympathy filling his eyes. A loud crack broke through to them. The mast collapsed. The wood smacked against the water, shooting waves into the air. Pirates from the Queen Anne's Revenge boarded the destroyed boat, carrying barrels with them. "He'll blow it up," Jack stated.

"How do you know?" Angelica asked.

"It's what Barbossa does," he said.

"What about the crew?" she questioned.

"They've probably already been taken by him," Jack answered.

The pirates below went from the carnage of what had once been the Second Voyage to the Queen Anne's Revenge. Captain Sparrow could almost hear Barbossa laugh. His ship reached a safe distance.

An earsplitting explosion broke the stillness. Salt water and debris shot straight into the air. "Duck!" Jack yelled. The group covered their heads as wound landed around them.

"Ow!" Angelica yelped.

Jack grunted as wood hit him as well.

"How will we get off the island now?" Angelica asked.

"Not sure," Death answered, "but we need to get to the treasure." She got up and began to run.

"Not again," Captain Jack muttered as he and Angelic started to chase her.

Barbossa stepped closer to their newest prisoners. "You," he pointed to a man who had apparent fear in his eyes.

The man did not reply.

Barbossa growled. "Who among you do you name as captain?" he shouted.

"Not here," a bold man yelled right back, matching Barbossa's tone.

"What…what he meant," a man said in a softer, kinder voice, "is that our captain, along with two of the crewmen, has already gone ashore."

"Names?" Barbossa prodded.

"Sparrow is the captain. He took the two women with him, a Ms. Smith and…uh…" the man racked his brain.

"Angelica?" Barbossa suggested.

The man pointed at him ecstatically. "That's the one! That was her name!"

Barbossa gave him a curt nod. "Brig," he said. The crew obeyed their master and took the men below.

Barbossa ran to the helm. Grabbing the wheel firmly, he forced the ship to head toward the bay.

"Sir," Scrum said to get Barbossa's attention. The captain looked at him. "How many people know how to find the treasure?"

"Why?" the captain asked.

"Well, captain, we found it. Jack knew how to find it. And that crew found it," he pointed to the Richard.

"It matters not how many know how to get here. All that matters is that we will emerge victorious," Barbossa stated.

"We going to destroy that one as well?" he asked.

Barbossa smiled. "Scrum, there are twenty-four chests waiting for us. That crew," he pointed to the Richard, "will have found most of them. Thirty of us will go ashore. The rest will board that vessel and will silently – silently being the key word – destroy it so as not to alarm them of what is happening."

Barbossa touched his sword. The anchor was lowered into the water. The crew of the Queen Anne's Revenge dispersed. Some with axes went to the Richard, and some went to shore with their captain.

"Hurry! Hurry!" Death shouted back to the stragglers behind her. She drew her sword. "They might not know about me yet! Prepare for a fight!"

Jack and Angelica each drew their weapons. Jack, slightly ahead of the Spanish woman, began hacking away the rogue branches that were in the way.

"Why do we need our swords?" Angelica asked.

"Intimidation," Death answered, now beside them.

Jack jumped from a startle. "Where did you come from?" Death opened her mouth to answer, but before she could, Jack threw his hand up. "Don't answer that," he added quickly.

"There are three of us and sixty-something of them," Angelica stated, referring to her previous question.

"Surprise, Angelica," Death said. "We have the element of surprise."

"Surprise…right," the other woman mocked quietly.

"And we have the element of death," Jack said.

"Right you are," Death laughed.

The warm glow of the fire under the shadows of the trees came into view. The group hushed. Jack inched forward. "Stop!" Death warned almost inaudibly. "Do you hear that?"

Jack held his breath, straining to hear. After a minute, he stopped. "What?"

"It's Barbossa. He's here, on the island," Death informed.

"What does that have to do with anything?" Angelica questioned.

"Let them hash it out. Then I'll go in and do my thing," Death said.

"You mean kill them?" the woman said sullenly.

Death obviously mentally juggled the statement. "Eh…if that's what it takes," she mused.

The sound of swords clashing and startled men screaming drew her attention back to the others. "We should go on in," Death stated, sweat already escaping her pores. Before there was a response, Death was running down the hill.

"What's her hurry?" Angelica asked.

Jack was quiet in thought, but only for a moment. "Men are fighting and should be dying, but they aren't. She can't contain herself." He looked Angelica in the eye. "She wants the blood of man. She wants his life. And once she gets down there, no one will be able to stop her."

He ran his sword through the unarmed man. In pain, the injured man hit the ground. Barbossa continued.

Two men approached him, swords drawn. "Lookie here, mate," one mocked, "a lost man. A lost man with no help!"

They lunged, but Barbossa was light on his feet…foot. With a quick but intense blow, the one-legged man stopped the first attack. "Aye, I may be alone," Barbossa countered, "but sometimes, men, one does not need assistance." Barbossa grabbed his crutch and whacked the man across the head. "Sometimes you just need skill." He dove at the other, sword first. It pierced the man, causing him to collapse. The captain then turned, and with great force, chopped his weapon down, effectively beheading the helpless man.

The now headless man opened his mouth to form a cry for help but failed. Barbossa laughed and looked for his next victim.

He spotted him and began on his way. A figure flew at him. The man turned in time to stop the sword from slicing him open. "You!" he shouted in shock.

Death laughed ravenously. "Leave! They're mine!" she yelled back at him.

Barbossa grimaced. "You're hungry for them," he whispered. Under the force of the continuing attack, he fell backward.

"Captain!" a man yelled. He stabbed the man that he was in a duel with and ran toward his fallen captain.

Death averted her attention to the coming man. She easily overpowered him once he reached sword-length from her. She cut him down. Barbossa struggled to his feet and limped away with fear.

Death let him go.

A man attacked her. "Nicholas! No! Stop!" another called.

Nicholas jabbed at the woman before him. With little effort, she evaded the attack. She counted it as her turn. Death swung backward then brought the sword forward, using all of his strength.

Nicholas stopped the attack before it hit him. "You should've run home when you had a chance, little lad," Death laughed, pulling the sword away from the weakened man. Spinning, she gained momentum and pushed the sword upward, getting it beneath his in an attempt to finish him off. He could do nothing. The sword ripped through him.

Jack and Angelica burst through the edge of the woods. They saw Nicholas's lifeless body come off the ground through Death's brute force.

"We're too late," Jack stated.

"What?" Angelica asked, speaking quickly from terror.

"She's tasted the blood of these men. She won't stop. Best to stay out of her way," he answered. "Let's find the treasure."

"We have no ship," Angelica objected.

Jack paused. "We still need to know where it is." He grabbed her hand and pulled her with him.

Three men attacked them. "Go ahead," Jack said. "I'll fight these landlubbers off."

Angelica heeded and went to find Blackbeard's – her father's – treasure.

Jack deflected the first few blows delivered to him and retaliated with some of his own.

Barbossa watched from afar as Jack quickly overwhelmed his unaware opponents. Angelica continued her search for the hidden treasure. Although the woman could not see the imminent threat approaching her, Barbossa could. Twelve men followed her. Barbossa laughed to himself. He pushed his sword backward and stabbed the men behind him.

A sailor from the Richard saw Nicholas's dead, lifeless body in the dirt. He saw the woman fighting just a few yards away. Drawing his sword, he whispered, "For you, brother." He barreled toward Death.

Distracted by her adversary of the moment, she did not see the man attacking. He sneaked up behind her. Quickly positioning his sword, the angry man slit her throat as she killed the man before her.

Her hand flew to her neck. Death turned to face him, the slash still evident. She wiped the blood from her skin; the wound was no longer there. She smirked. "Silly sailor," she mocked, "did you really believe that you could kill Death?" Laughing, she returned the favor that he had given her; she raised her sword and sliced his throat as he had just done to her. "How does it feel?"

"Angelica!" Jack screamed, trying to warn her. He cut the abdomen of his last standing opponent.

The Spanish woman turned to see the men behind her. Drawing her sword, she saw Jack coming for help.

Barbossa looked back to the shouts from Jack and Angelica as they fought beside each other. "Scrum," he said.

"Aye, captain," the man answered.

"Round the crew. Get the treasure. This ends for us," the captain commanded.

Jim, the man in charge of destroying the Richard, watched for his captain. "They should almost be here," he said to Peter.

"There they are," he stated, pointing to the trees. Barbossa and his crew were coming down the hill, treasure in hand. "I thought no one could die."

"What?" Jim asked.

Peter was counting the men with his hand. "We are missing six."

Jim paused. "Whoever falls behind, gets left behind."

Death massacred the men in her way. "Angelica, look out!" she heard Jack yell out.

She turned to see the two fighting together. Another man attacked her. Outraged that her concentration had been interrupted, Death stabbed the man in the heart.

"Jack! No!" Angelica screamed.

Her voice sounded desperate. Death heard the change. Angelica had had a voice that cracked, almost as if a sob had escaped.

Death turned. Jack lay on the ground. The men ran off when they saw her coming. Blood poured from Jack's open wound where someone had slit his throat.
