Chapter 12

The burning feeling in his stomach woke Tobi up. The hunger was the thing he couldn't ignore like the throbbing pain in his body. His eyes slowly opened, as birds chirping, many of them, over him, on tree branches, made it harder for him to stay in a slumbering state. His eyes squinted from the sun's rays, trees failing to block all of the light with their leaves. The masked man stared, exhausted, closing his eyes back as he didn't wish to get up. He wondered why he was in a forest, lying down with a sore body…

"You'll be fine now," that voice…it belonged to…Mizuki? Tobi's eyes twitched open, head moving to his left to see Mizuki near Chan. Her hands were glowing, healing Chan's left shoulder. The boy was feeling his face, it was better than before as it only had few purple bruises.

"At least the swelling stop…" he sighed. "I looked like I was mauled by a bear…"

"If that was true, then it would have been worse," she said, a small smile appearing on her face. She still looked sad; her eyes lacked the light they used to have. Why…? Then the events from last night came back to Tobi's mind. This got him to sit up, even if his body told him otherwise. He noticed Miso was staring at a couple of fish that been set up around the campfire, sticks pierced through the fish, holding them in place.

Miso looked at his sensei quietly, before turning back to the fire.

"Are we…still doing the mission?" he asked quietly. Chan and Mizuki also had the same question, watching their teacher. Tobi let out a sigh before lying back on the grass. An arm went over his mask, covering the holes.

"No." he said with his deep voice. "I gave it to Hanabi's team…"

Chan frowned, looking away with annoyance. Mizuki didn't say a thing, getting up to tend the fish that were almost finished. Miso kept his eyes on them, before honestly saying what he thought of Tobi's choice.

"That's good…" he let out. "We weren't ready anyways…"

Tobi listened. He couldn't believe he was hearing this from Naruto's own son. Naruto would never give up in anything. Literally… Tobi was going to lecture him, but decided to rest instead. He wasn't in the state to teach.

"You can say that again," Chan grumbled coldly. "Not even our teacher was able to stand up to them," the boy was now embarrassed to even be Tobi's student.

At this, Tobi frowned, his chest clenching as he replayed his fail attempt to protect his students…He had a reason why he couldn't fight. The seal had consumed him with pain, shut down his power, weakening him. He blamed Hanabi, knowing she was the reason for their loss. It was too much of a coincidence for her team coming in the neck of time…saving them…

"My aunt's team…is very strong…" Miso admitted.

"They fought like true shinobi," Chan said annoyed. "Better than our sensei!" he was so angry, blaming their failures at the masked man. Tobi took the blame, as he knew it was his fault. "If they hadn't come…we would all be…" his teeth grinded together, glaring at his teacher. Mizuki was seen as a play thing, not even worth to fight serious with. The ninjas knew the three Genin were weak, based off of Tobi's own strength. He couldn't believe The Hokage appointed this weak man to lead them. Of course, why didn't he think of this earlier? Their sensei was weak. They beat him in the bell test.

"We should go home," Miso didn't even try to defend their sensei. What could he say? The man wasn't even as strong as his dad made him out to be. So much for other nations fearing him…

Tobi forced himself on his feet, walking away from the three. Chan frowned at this.

"Can't take the truth?" he called annoyed.

"I'm getting some fresh air," Tobi simply said. Chan grunted, going over the fire. The fish were crispy, ready to be eaten as Mizuki pulled them away from the fire. She avoided eye contact from the two boys.

"What…do you want…?" a dark voice hissed hoarsely, as if he hadn't talked for a long time, belonging to Tobi, who had been striped down to his boxers, wrists bounded on the back with shackles and a seal. He was blindfolded with a black cloth, white symbols glowing over it. Over his mouth seemed to be a muzzle, covering most of his face. Tobi was on his knees, in the middle of what seemed to be a seal, painted on the ground, immobilizing him. The man had scars all over his body, old and some that seemed have been inflicted recently.

"I'm here to offer you a deal," A calm voice answered the imprisoned man, behind bars. The visitor was Naruto, early twenties, frowning at the state the prisoner was in. He was surprised Tobi knew it was him, even if his eyes were covered up. The prisoner looked very thin, malnourished. The man ignored the unnerving scent that he would guess as to be human waste.

"I was given the title Hokage," Naruto said quietly.

"Here to gloat?" Tobi let out, a bit weakly, but still held anger in his voice. Naruto knew the prisoner had a grudge on him, ever since he stopped the masked man's plan…years ago.

"No. I'm here to tell you that now that I am Hokage, I requested the other Kages to free you."

At this, the place was silent. The guards who stood at the gates of the room looked at one another, shocked. They were the guards of Tobi. Tobi had been placed in a isolated prison cell, away from other prisoners. The prisoner ignored the pain on his body, bones ached as well as his muscles.

"As long as you regret your actions and-"

"Regret?" Tobi spat with fury. "Why would I regret what I have done? What I did was to bring peace in this cursed forsaken world! To stop the lies and hatred that has rotted every damn soul!"

Naruto frowned, getting close to the bars, taking note they were shielded by a static field.

"That was Madara's dream," Naruto said silently, trying to maintain his own cool as he didn't want to snap at the prisoner, knowing that would end up yelling at each other. "You even said you were no one…with no ambition…Madara used you, someone who had no meaning of life as their loyal servant to do their bidding…"

Tobi didn't want to believe this. Well it was true that the plan was Madara's idea…his dream…but… Tobi accepted it to be his own dream too…

"I forgive you…for what you did to my parents…" Naruto let out quietly, taking Tobi off guard. "And I think the position you are in…is not justice…" the blonde man couldn't ignore the gashes the prisoner had on his body, indicating he was whipped. There was no reason to hurt the prisoner…He was already bounded with no way to move...to escape…

"I am not sorry for what I did," Tobi hissed. "Everything was a sacrifice…for peace…"

Naruto ignored him, looking directly to where his eyes were. "I will get you out of here…"The Hokage turned to leave, passing the guards that were guarding the prison room.

"I will never be sorry…" Tobi let out with hatred…

Naruto sat in his office, with Sakura frowning at him. "Why…did you let them put that seal on him?" she asked annoyed. Naruto was looking at some documents, trying to avoid the question. "I was told you agreed, that you weren't even sure you could fully trust Tobi," what aggravated her more was that Naruto wasn't fully trusting of Tobi. How could she let that shinobi take her daughter out of town?

"It was…just…to keep the other nations in peace…"

"Bullshit!" Sakura's fists slammed down the desk, crushing it. Naruto sat up fast, eyes wide.

"Calm down, Sakura," the Hokage stuttered.

"Our children are out there! With that madman! I had faith in you Naruto! Trusted you for your own trust for him and then I learn you have your own doubts! And you want me to calm down?" she yanked the man by his collar, pulling him to her. "How the hell do I know my daughter is safe?"

"By trusting my words," Sakura and Naruto froze, hearing the dark deep voice in the room. Sakura turned to see Tobi, teleporting into the room thanks to his sharingan eye. He watched them as they noticed his uniform's condition, rips and burn marks ruined it.

"You guys fought?" Naruto asked shocked, after Sakura let him go. Naruto guessed whoever fought Tobi was strong, to even get a scratch on him.

"Yes, there was a fight," Tobi said simply. "But before that…someone activated the seal on me…" he said darkly. Naruto was shocked as was Sakura. This meant…Tobi was vulnerable, and what worried them more was the kids.

"Where's Mizuki?" She demanded now, angry and worried.

"All three are fine…Thanks to Hanabi Hyuga…who came to save the day in the last second…" Tobi had grunted. Naruto caught the suspicion in the masked man's voice.

"You…think Hanabi activated it?" he asked, shocked Tobi would accuse her.

"Well what the hell do you want me to think?" Tobi lost his cool, snapping at him. "Your children almost lost their lives while I was too weak to do a damn thing!" he stopped; shocked that he was acting like this. Naruto and Sakura stared. His anger was genuine.

Sakura opened her mouth, to ask something, but decided to ignore it. She looked away, relieved her daughter was safe…but she frowned, someone was responsible for the danger that was laid upon the team.

"Maybe…it's another shinobi from another nation?" Sakura began to suspect foul play.

"I'm going to contact the Kages and will find out who done it," Naruto said with a serious tone.

"I gave the mission to Hanabi, as the children lost their will for it."

Naruto was shocked; the children didn't want to do the mission anymore? It seemed their spirits were crushed…

"So why didn't you bring them here," Sakura asked annoyed as Tobi was the only one in Konoha.

"I'm here to ask permission, from The Hokage," the masked man looked to the blonde's direction.

Naruto blinked. "Permission…for what?"

"Permission to be outside of Konoha with the children, to train," Tobi said simply. Sakura frowned, looking at Naruto who didn't seem to like the idea either.

"I…don't think that's a wise choice…" Naruto admitted, making Tobi frown behind his mask.

"Bring them here," Sakura ordered. "The children need to rest."

"If I bring them here, they will never want to step foot out of this village again!" Tobi lectured them coldly. Naruto stared at him, unable to understand the statement.

"Why do you say that…?" Sakura asked annoyed.

"Those kids were beaten badly….have no desire to keep going…" his eyes directed to the blonde. "They are afraid…and if they come back to Konoha, that fear will stick in their souls…disabling them." He turned away. "What happened was my fault…those kids weren't ready to be out of the village and I will take responsibility…I will fix what is broken…."

Naruto stared at the masked man, eyes wide with surprise. Never in his life would he think to see Tobi fighting to help others…especially for his own son's being. Sakura didn't know what to say, biting her lower lip.

"How long…?" Naruto asked.

"Maybe a week," Tobi said. Sakura was debating if she would let this happen. At least with the mission, she would know where they could be, but now…it would be hard to keep tabs with them.

"Alright…" Naruto gave in, eyes on the masked man with a serious look. "I trust you…"

"You sure?" Tobi used a mocking tone. "Do you wish to put a tracking device on me just in case I decide to kidnap those kids?"

Naruto was silent, knowing Tobi had listened to the conversation earlier… His eyes wondered away. Tobi had his back to them.

"Farewell," Tobi's body swirled away thanks to his special teleportation technique. Sakura glanced at the village, through the windows, hoping everything will end up well…

Tobi walked back to the campsite and stopped, to see no one was in sight… The masked man noticed all the things were gone for the exception for his bag. Damn it… he pulled the bag to his back and jumped on top of a tree, scanning the area. He would guess the kids abandoned him…. Weak they think he was? Oh, he was going to prove them wrong…

"You sure…he left us?" Miso asked quietly as the three Genin walked along the dirt road back to Konoha. "He said he was…getting some fresh air."

Chan rolled his eyes, turning to him. "Miso… from the start that man didn't want to be our instructor."

Mizuki was looking down, sighing. "He's right…" she let out quietly. "He said that your dad forced him…"

Miso felt hurt at this. He didn't want to think of it that way… It was true…Tobi admitted he was teaching them because of his dad…

"And I bet if we talk to your dad that we don't want him, he'll give us someone who actually is strong and wants to train us," Chan was determined. Tobi failed them miserably.

Mizuki just wanted to go home, to take a long hot bad…to get rid of all the disgusting touches the rouge ninja caused on her.

Chan took out his map from his pocket, unfolding it to make sure they were in the right path.

"It was my fault…" Miso said quietly. "If I didn't…run away…"

Chan groaned. Miso told him about his cowardly scene before. He kept walking to their path. "A true jounin wouldn't even need a Genin's help," he grumbled.

"Well, it depends in the situation you silly," the three stopped on their tracks and quickly turned to see their sensei, arms crossed, head tilted to the side.

"Where you abandoning your teacher?" the man was using his childish voice, sounding hurt. Chan glared, stepping in front of him.

"You're insane!" he yelled annoyed. Tobi's arms dropped, letting out a few choking sounds.

"Chan…you are very mean to me…" he turned around, head down as he was making sounds that sounded like sobbing.

"I don't care," Chan coldly said as he looked at his teammates and signaled them to follow as he began to dash away. Mizuki and Miso were hesitant and followed. Tobi looked at them confused.

"I want to come too!" he called. Chan entered the forest with the other two. He was hoping he could lose their sensei, but stopped in shock when Tobi jumped on the same branch as him, next to him amused.

"Howdy," Tobi gave him a simple wave with his hand. Chan glared and made a roundhouse kick to his head. The boy smirked to see Tobi showing no hint to move as he was about to make contact, but then he gasped, eyes widening to see his leg going through Tobi…as if he was ghost! Miso and Mizuki stared in shock as Chan fell off the branch after losing his balance.

Chan twisted his body, landing on the ground safely on his two feet. He glared at his sensei that was walking down the tree as he whistled a random tune.

"I'm a bit tired, so playing with you three would be too much for poor old me," he joked. Chan was thinking Tobi pulled a trick, explaining how the masked man was able to avoid the kick. Then again…

"Genjutsu," Chan hissed, accusing the masked man of using his sharingan on them.

"Genjutsu?" Tobi guessed they knew his secret…of his sharingan. He looked around. "Where?"

"Stop toying with us!" Chan snapped, running at him.

Tobi looked at him amused as Chan threw a punch; Tobi simply caught it with his own hand before his right hole glowed.

"Good night," Tobi sang as his sharingan was activated, using it to knock out Chan with its power…

"Chan!" Miso called shocked as he saw Tobi use his sharingan. Tobi placed the boy on the ground and looked at the other two.

"Hey hey, Miso!" he called, motioning the boy to come to him. Miso's eyes widen, shaking his head fast as he didn't want to get close to the split personality sensei of his.

"Aww come on Miso, I'll give you candy," he sang playfully, kneeling to the unconscious Chan and used his fingers to force Chan's mouth to curve up, like a creepy smile. "See? You can be super happy like Chan!"

Miso and Mizuki ran to a certain direction, but were shocked to see Tobi was in their way.

"How…?" Miso looked back to where Chan was, who was alone. Tobi had quickly teleported with an incredible.

"Magic, duh!" he joked before quickly jumped near Miso and used the same move he had done on Chan to knock the blonde boy out. Mizuki stared, biting her lip as she began to back away. Her eyes began to swell up with tears. She was imagining their sensei was going to do something horrible to them. Tobi looked at her after placing the boy to the ground. He had noticed her sadness, her fear.

"Trust me…Mizuki…" Tobi's normal voice came back, with the same soft tone that he used to comfort her from the other night. Mizuki's tears trailed down her cheeks. How could she trust him? She didn't even know who he really was. The man was acting strange. He was a huge mystery, people in town hated him. There had to be a reason for their hatred towards him. The masked man wasn't like Naruto…It was known jinchurikis were hated before, but Tobi wasn't one…Mizuki didn't move as her sensei moved towards her, his sharingan eye glowing through the mask hole. The sharingan looked dangerous; it had a darker tone to it. Mizuki was terrified of it and was about to pull away, but darkness slowly consumed her surroundings, the sharingan eye being the last thing she saw…
