Chapter 12 – Payback went wrong

Present Day

I went into the public library of Chicago, the city where we were holed up. I wanted to see where the headquarters of Abstergo was in this city. And I quickly found it, thanks to Google. 'Abstergo Industries. Founded in the twentieth century. Business Quarter 217.'

I grinned. Those Templars really were stupid if they didn't conceal their presence anywhere. Now I knew where to hit them. But I had to make sure Grit was there. And then, I suddenly didn't feel good about the mission anymore. Because the boss of that building was Grit!

If Grit was the leader, it meant he was a Master Templar. So, that bastard was better than he showed me! I frowned. I had to think this through and not barge in guns blazing. This would require stealth, discretion and quiet kills. Exactly my specialties. Right. So, off to another kill I was. Or so I thought.

I crawled out of the air vent slowly and silently, listening and watching for any guards to come by. Finding the vent was hard, as it was behind some bushes. But there's nowhere an Assassin can't find his way. So in I went.

When I was sure nobody was coming, I fell down a bit, made a silent roll and stood back up, still crouching to make less noise. Now I just had to find Grit and the war would be over for our team. Then we could finally lay back and try to enjoy the rest of our lives. But that would never be the case, I thought.

After an hour of walking and searching, I finally found that damn building. I had to look up as far as I could and I still couldn't see the top. Great. Now where the hell was Grit supposed to be? I shrugged. It didn't matter now. I'd simply kill anyone in the way. I lost my thought of doing this with stealth. I'd do it at first, but if I'd be discovered, anyone that would stop me would die.

I started walking around the building to look for an entrance. I didn't find one on the bottom floor, so I looked up, something many people forget to do. And then I did find an entrance. An open window, literally, on the second floor. I'd have to climb there…

I looked around for a route and used Eagle Vision, which I learned from Bjorn, to detect the direct path. I quickly found it. There were some ledges I could grab a hold of, and on which I could pull myself up.

I looked around if there was nobody watching me. If there was, I'd have to take care of them first. Luckily, I saw no-one. I sprinted up to the ledges and started pulling myself up. Thanks to the climbing memories from Bjorn, I was able to do it much faster than usual.

It took me a while to reach the window. I even thought I saw someone sitting on the building next to Abstergo, but I was mistaken, it was just a bird. Then I ducked through the window. I immediately looked around the room to see if there was anyone. Or, of course, anything useful. The only thing I saw in the room was a desk with some paperwork, though. The desk's owner was gone.

I snuck over to the desk and started rummaging through the files. Here was a file that said that the guy had higher clearance to A-level files now. I scratched my head. I figured that the A-files were the highest files one could access.

I looked through them some more. But then I found a file with the Assassin symbol on it. I grabbed it and read through it. As soon as I finished reading it, my head went numb. The Templars were going to send an extermination force to our hideout. And Grit would be leading them personally. But if Grit wasn't alive anymore…

Now I didn't care about stealth at all. I just wanted to get to Grit and rip the fucker's head off. I opened the door and jolted towards the lift. And just as the doors opened, Templars stepped out. I acted quickly; I stabbed both of them with my hidden blades and pulled them back into the lift. I'd have to hide these two, but I didn't care. Grit had to die.

The lift reached the top floor. This floor looked different, more advanced than other floors. I scanned the area, but once again, no-one here. Why was I starting to get the feeling that all this was going just a little too easy? And I was right from the moment I thought it.

As soon as I stepped out of the elevator and looked left to see if there were guards, I felt a gun poking in my side. 'Move!' a brutish voice said. I sighed. I should have stayed in the elevator in the first place. A stupid mistake I did not intend to repeat.

I followed the directions the man gave me until we arrived at a large door. 'Open it,' he said. I pushed the door open and guns were immediately pointed at me. 'Welcome, Caden. I've been expecting your return!' a voice said.

I frowned in anger. 'Grit!' I said, for that was the man talking in front of me. Grit tried to hush me, but I didn't let him. 'How did you know I was coming?' I asked him. Grit's expression didn't change, but I could definitely notice that he was annoyed by my rude interruption.

'I know because I have spies everywhere. Don't worry, it's not one of your little group. Which, by the way, will be taken care of soon enough!' I frowned even more now. 'If you dare touch Ben and Emma, then I'll-' Grit interrupted me. 'Then what? You are right here, all guns pointed at you. And you think you can stop us from destroying your hideout, Animus and friends? Think again!'

Grit nodded to a group of men and they moved out of the room. 'Those men are the elites of this compound. Your friends are going to die by their hands, and I'll tell the police it was your fault!' Grit sneered. But then, I turned the tables on him. 'Oh yeah?' I said, 'Then tell me: What's this thing used for?'

My hand reached into my pocket and when it came out, I was holding a cell phone. Grit laughed. 'A cell phone? You're going to call a lawyer?' I grinned now. 'If you think that, Dane, then you're stupider than you look. This thing sends out a signal to all Assassins worldwide. They know you're here now. And they want you all dead!'

As expected, the lights went out and ten people dropped down from the plastered roof, killing the guards with the guns. I sprinted over to Grit with a speed I never dreamed of having and jumped him with my Hidden Blade unsheathed.

'Any last words, Dane?' I said. Grit only smiled. 'You Assassins truly are a lost cause!' After saying that, he grabbed my arm and slammed his own head into the Hidden Blade, killing himself. But my heart was still filled with worry.

'All of you, with me!' I yelled. 'Ten Elites have been sent to my hideout, we have to stop them! NOW!' And so, I went to my hideout. And to the horrors that awaited me soon after.
