Chapter 12 - "The Other Side"
Amy Rose's Side of the Story
I woke up remembering nothing. I could feel pain coming down my sides with my right arm feeling like it got ripped off more than 5 times. What did I do last night? As I opened my eyes to my surprise, I'm inside my room on my bed. I could see someone left the window opened and the curtain blew gently with the wind. Everything seems normal. As I tried to get up, I realize I was in a dark purple dress that's torn and ripped in two different areas. There was even deep dark red paint on the torn areas. Then everything started to hit me at once. That stupid date with Manic and… Scourge. Oh my gosh! Did all of that happen!?
I felt like I was going to hyperventilate. I need to calm down. Without thinking, I jumped out of bed and ran out of the room to the downstairs and to the living room yelling out, "AUNT HELEN!" Hoping none of that didn't happen and maybe to see if she's all right. Somehow she wasn't here. I headed toward the kitchen. No site of her anywhere. God! If Scourge has her…
My heart beat a mile of a minute. Calm down, I told myself. I took a big breath in and thought of what Helen might be doing right now. All of this feels weird. There was nothing wrong with the house, and Helen wouldn't take off anywhere unless she told me or left me a note. So where could she be…
I turn my head to the main doorway and thought she might be outside… I grab the door handle and opened the front door. The light shined in my eyes. I covered them until I got used to the light. Finally, I could see someone standing right on the lawn, wearing a light purple shirt and black colored pants. Her back was turned to face me, but I already knew who she was. The same long yellow hair as I remember, Aunt Helen.
I signed in relief and almost laughed. Then, I realized she was talking to someone. A green hedgehog wearing a red vest with black pants, Manic. I couldn't stop smiling. Helen and Manic are fine. Thank you!
I bet after what happen yesterday night both of them were worried about me. I smiled and said to Helen, "Helen!… Manic! There you are! I was starting to get worried that something bad happened."
There was no reply from both of them. Actually neither of them moved or turned to see me. "Hello?…" I said. Nothing happened. My heart felt frozen. Panic started to build inside me once again.
"Helen?… Manic?…" I asked as I walked over to Helen's side. She looks worried and her mouth was opened but with no movement like she was frozen. Now that I realize, their color is a bit off, like a grayish color.
"Helen!?" I asked as I touched her arm. I couldn't move the arm and it felt like solid ice. I looked way from Helen and was going to ask for help, but everyone down the street has frozen. Some kids were playing football in the yard. One boy was in the air but hadn't fallen down yet. A little down the way, couples are laughing but no sound came from their lips. No… This couldn't be happening. It just couldn't.
As I turned away from them and about to give up hope. I finally found someone actually moving. I almost didn't believe it. A glowing, yellow hedgehog with long, blond hair wearing a dark, blue headband and a dark, blue top, but also a long, sky blue skirt with matching color sleeves walking down the street with their back turn to me.
So I'm not alone, I told myself. The yellow hedgehog came to the stop and turned her head a little bit like she heard me talk. Sadly, I still couldn't see her face.
"More hearts will be lost…" a voice said from where she was standing. I didn't understand what she was talking about, but I guess she was talking to me. I walked over to her, and then, she started to move way.
"Hey wait, stop!" I yelled at her. I ran after her but she turned around the corner too fast for me. As I made it to the corner, she was gone. Maybe I was just seeing things I thought since this wasn't the first time I saw things that aren't there. One time, I believed I went back in time to Echidna, ruling this land, and Angel Island. Then again that was the time when Chaos almost flooded Station Square many years back. (Sonic Adventure, 1998 or Sonic Adventure DX, 2003) Now as I think about it, I shouldn't be living in Station Square at all. But there's just no way it could be happening now… I looked round the place and saw across the street what looks like a destroyed destruction area. Some people even crowded around the place, most of them were in shocked or wondering what's going on. There was even news people standing right behind the people looking. But still once again, no one moved. I have to get out of here.
As I walked over to the destruction place, I realized it's not just any place. It's the Station Square Mall, now in ruins. I couldn't believe it. Mostly my shock was on the fact that I got here so fast. The Mall was more than 30 blocks away from home. It's just impossible to turn one corner and magically get here…
People in orange vests were standing still looking like they were searching through piles of ash and dirt. What are they looking for? I wondered if someone went missing… There was a red hedgehog with an orange vest too holding a clapboard in his hands. Maybe he has information about what's going on.
I walked right behind him and saw the clapboard holding a piece of paper. On that paper in big letters, it said: 'Missing' and small letters talking about the person's size and weight. But what took me by surprise was a picture of a pink hedgehog girl with a red dress and headband, and light green eyes and a laughing smile across her face. I almost didn't believe it, but that's me…
Wait so I'm lost? But I'm standing right in front of them… Unless, in real life I went missing then that means I had to… I could feel my eyes widen. I get it now. I'm dead. That's why I'm here. I'm not alive. But that also means Scourge won. I shook my head. No. no…
"The past will repeat again…" A sweet female voice said. I heard that voice before. I turn to see that blond haired hedgehog with that same blue dress on again. But this time her hair was covering her face.
"What do you want?" I asked. She didn't reply but turned and walked way from me. Great! I'm stuck here with a hedgehog girl that won't talk to me unless she chooses too. I ran after her again, but this time hoping to get her. Even though, the more I ran after her, the more she moved faster. She turned down to a dark alley. I stopped and stared into the darkness. I wasn't sure if I should go, but I have to go.
I let the dark consumed me. Then, I was in a totally different room. Actually, it's a very dark, metallic hallway. I turn round both ways hoping to see the hedgehog girl. But no sign of her.
"Hello," I yelled, "Can anyone hear me?" No answer. I decided to turn back to the mall, and the way I came in was now metallic walls. I started to get worried.
Then, out of no where, a sound, like a gunshot echoed through the halls and a call followed saying, "Maria!" I know that voice anywhere. "Shadow," I said as I ran to the voice. Then, another *Bang* happened. I wonder what's going on? When I was almost to a lit room, the loud alarm went off letting high ring sounds. As I got into the lit room, a tall man with an orange mustache in a white coat was yelling at the other men in white coats as they tried to keep a door closed. But you could hear loud bangs behind that door. The man with the orange mustache looked right at me like he actually could see me. Then, he turned his head to the other side of the room and yelled, "Shadow take Maria and run don't look back!"
Shadow?
I turn my head to find a black and red hedgehog looking at me with glaring blood, red eyes. He grabbed - Actually grabbed- my hand and started to run out of the room. Some of the time he was faster than my feet could run, but I tried to keep up. We ran downstairs, through doors, and even halls that felt like forever. Sadly, Shadow started to speed up when voices were coming down the hallways. Then, voices started to come closer.
We got to a another metal door. Shadow pushed it opened and pushed me inside. He closed the door and ran to the only machine in the room. He started to press every button on that machine. I wanted to go see what he was up to, but my feet felt like they couldn't move from the ground.
Shadow looked at me, and then walked over to me as he hung his right hand out for me. I looked at it for a minute, then back at Shadow. I could see worry in his eyes. Then, it started to fade away with a smile. "Maria, come with me," he said sweetly. I blush even though he didn't say my name right. Then again, everyone here thinks I'm Maria right now.
As I was about to grab his hand. I jumped from hearing another loud *Bang* coming from outside the door. I pulled myself away from Shadow feeling scared of what's going on. Shadow couldn't wait as he pull me to himself, then got us on the machine that has a platform. Luckily, Shadow doesn't have a good grip on me. So I got out of his hands and moved away from him.
Sadly I didn't realize, by me doing this, I pressed one of the buttons on the machine. A big glass cast shot down from the top to the bottom of Shadow's feet. Shadow was now trapped behind the glass.
He started to kick it and punch it as hard as he could but it wouldn't break. "I'll get you out," I said to Shadow as I looked at the many buttons on the machine. If only I knew which button was the right one. The only thing I could think of that might let Shadow be free is the lever. I placed my hands on the lever and was about to pull it until Shadow yelled, "Maria don't!" I looked up at him. He doesn't want my help?
I heard a door opened from behind me. I turned my head to find a G.U.N. Man pointing a black gun at me. I felt scared. I don't want to be shot, but I have to get Shadow out of here. I started again to pull the lever but the G.U.N. Man ordered me to stop as he started to move a little bit closer to me.
I didn't know what to do. I felt overwhelmed and the alarm wasn't help much cause it started to get louder. Out of no where a voice came into my head. "Past will repeat." Must be that hedgehog girl again but why now?!
"MARIA!" Shadow yelled as he banged on the glass.
"I'll shoot!" The gun told me as he kept on pointing the gun at me. Too many worries I thought.
"More Hearts will be lost." Again. Same Hedgehog girl. Leave me alone. I felt like crying.
"NO!" Please stop yelling. I don't know what to do…
"STOP WHAT YOUR DOING!" I can't thinking with all of this. The alarm kept getting louder and louder. Please let it end.
"Amy."
The girl voice said calmly, "In the end he was made to save the world. Would you choose to save his life for the world or let it end just so you could be with him?" I looked up to see Shadow's eyes. I could remember the first time I met him. No fear, no feelings, nothing but now… Worried, scared, wanting. I placed my hand on the glass and I smiled at him. I know what's right.
"I chose this," I said. His eyes wide with more worried then ever. I gripped the handle and pulled down the lever. I closed my eyes as I waited for that shot to hit me. But everything became silent. Even the sound of the alarm was gone. I opened my eyes and looked up to the glass. Hoping to see Shadow but he wasn't in there. I turned to see if that gunman was still in the room. He was missing too, like both of them weren't there to beginning with. I sighed with relief.
"So it is true. He found someone finally," a familiar voice said. I turned to a corner where the same faceless, girl hedgehog with the blue dress was standing. She looked like she was turning into something else. This time her yellow fur turned to a light peach color and her hair grew longer. Then, the dress grew bigger. She wasn't a hedgehog anymore but a human girl with a face. Actually, she looked like someone I remember but I couldn't put my finger on it.
When she opened her eyes, she stared at me with those blue eyes. She smile at me. The girl walked over to me with a smile acrossed her face. "Hello, you don't know me, but my name is Maria." I blinked my eyes a couples of times. Wait she can't be…
"Maria, like at the Space Colony Ark, Maria Robotnik, and the girl that everyone thought I was?"
She nodded her head. "Yes, I'm that Maria." I couldn't believe it! Then again, if this was the after life, then it would make since because she pasted way too. "Funny how you think you're dead," She said laughing. My eyes widen.
"You can hear me?" I asked as I nod my head to the side.
"Well of course," she said laughing again.
"Ok, then you must know why I'm here?"
"Follow me," she said as she moved to the closed off doorway. But as she touch the door, it opened. I was in shock, but at the same time wondering where she was planning on taking me. As we were walking I realized none of us said anything. I felt like speaking up but I had no idea what to say.
By the time we made it to another large metal door, she stopped and looked at me. Then she said, "I brought you here so I could talk to you about Shadow."
"What about him?" I asked hoping she's not talking about what just happen minutes ago. Her eyes narrowed.
"I realize he couldn't leave you alone," She said as she turn her head to the side and closed her eyes. "He even saved you that night at the mall." So she knows what happen at the mall. I nodded to her in agreement.
"Yes, I remember, he showed up to save me," I said remembering the last part before I fade into the darkness. Even though it was for a short time, I can still feel Scourge's grip my ripped dress and held me up in mid air. I was very lucky that Shadow saved me in time.
"And he did," Maria said. Looking back at me with those blue, worried eyes. "But it made me worry for your life and his."
"I don't see why you have to worry about us since Shadow took down Scourge," I said. She shook her head.
"I fear that it's not the end for the both of you," she said.
"End?" I asked. Before I could add more she opened the metal door. At first, I didn't recognized the room because it was so dark. I don't remember this room much since we were in here for a good 3 hours. The metal floor seems a lot colder from last time and only a bit of light was coming though the windows. But this room was the first time I asked Shadow to save us.
"Remember what you just saw?" Maria asked as I turned to look at her. She walked over to the window that showed our planet. She waited for me to reply, but I just nodded my head again. Then, she continued. "Back then… That whole night was just awful. We were put on this Ark hoping to help mankind. Sadly, everyone will always think the worst of it before the good. There was more deaths than saving lives. That night, Shadow was trying to save me. However in the end, I saved his life because the world need him. I was just one person. My voice… My opinions didn't matter like it would for him. One person can't do it alone. It took me years even after my death to see. Even he can't do it all by himself.
'He'll need someone by his side telling him right from wrong. Some years ago when everyone on earth were going to died, my grandfather was mad at the people that took me way from this world. He used the ark to destroy Earth. Shadow was standing right in this room looking down at the world. And I couldn't do anything, because he couldn't hear me…
'When you showed up, at first I didn't think Shadow would never listen to you, but he changed. Those few minutes you made him see the light. I couldn't stop smiling. If it wasn't for you, I couldn't stare down at the world I love. When he said that he was going to fulfill the promise he made to me. He added you on to that promise too. I was in shock. I had a feeling this wasn't going to be the last time he would see you again. I was right," she said almost crying. I guess when you're gone and you're seeing the people you love hurt others. This could take a lot out of you especially when you can't speak to them.
"But I bet he doesn't remember that night or anything about me in that matter," I said looking away from her. If Shadow did remember that night then that could have been the reason why he saved me. Or not.
"That's where you're wrong," she said smiling, "He knows it but the memory isn't there. The more he's near you, the more he wants it. It might take years but I don't believe you won't mind waiting."
"Yes… Wait. I don't understand. You brought me here to talk about Shadow but where's the point of having me here if he doesn't have the memory or anything in that matter?" I asked. It's not that I mind waiting. Just right now, I don't have anytime to wait.
"Let's just say I know what's going to happen next, and I don't believe you will be disappointed with the idea," She gave a smile like another child would do if they're hiding something from a little kid's birthday party, and you know they're never going to tell them ever.
I narrowed my eyes at her. "You're not going to tell me, are you?" I asked.
Then, she gave me a Chester Cat's grin. and then replied with a, "Yes, I'm not telling you."
I shook my head. "Should of known," I said as I turn my head away from her.
"But Amy, I must warn you, there is a dark side to all of this. If you continue on this path with him and your friend doesn't change in time, the past will repeat and more hearts will be lost," she said worriedly.
"The last part of what you just said, 'The past will repeat and more hearts will be lost,' you have been saying since I got here. What do you mean my friend, do you mean Manic? What's wrong with him?" I asked as I looked up to her. Then, a bright light shone round her. It was hard to see her. Almost like she was turning into an angel in front of me.
"Time is short," she said with a sigh. "You'll find out someday. I wish you luck." Then, the light round her started to grow bigger.
"Wait! I don't get it!"
"Someday. You'll find out what I mean," She said as the light consumed her and the whole room. Whatever was left of the room has to be me standing there alone.
"NO!," I yelled. As the light started to fade to darkness. At first, I believe this is true death, until I could hear the wind blowing into my ears. My eyes fluttered to get opened. My vision was blurry, but I could see the light blue sky with puffy white clouds.
I moved my body to lean up as I looked round the area. I was laying on a brown wooden porch swing in the middle of a grassy yard and a house about 5 feet way from where I was sitting. I realized I'm in a backyard, Aunt Helen's backyard. How did I get here?
Before I got up, I checked out myself. I'm not wearing that purple dress anymore, but a black shirt with a design of a hot pink heart on it and a hot pink checkerboard skirt. How in the world- You know what I'm not even going to question the insanity of this life. Just go long with it.
As I got up, a familiar voice said, "Amy?" I turned my head to see Aunt Helen standing next to the fence with a surprised look. She was still wearing the same outfit from earlier today. Or in my case an hour or two hours ago. Then, Manic ran right next to Helen, with the same look as hers. Shock. Helen started to cry as she ran to me and put her arms round me as she yelled out, "YOUR SAFE, DEAREST DON'T EVER DO THAT TO ME AGAIN!" I hurt my ears, but I'll let it go and hugged her back.
"Yeah, I'm safe. Sorry to make you worry Aunt Helen," I said trying to calm her down. Manic walked over to us, with a smile of relief.
"Good to see you again Amy," he said as Aunt Helen let go of me.
"Good to see that you can walk by yourself again," I said as he laughed at my comment.
"What's that supposed to mean?" he asked.
"You don't remember?" I asked back to him.
"Remember what?" he asked again. Gosh! He doesn't remember that night I had to carry his heavy body to safety.
"I'm not going to tell you," I said as he shook his head.
"At least we got the right Amy," Manic said as Helen started to laugh.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked. He gave me a wicked smile.
"Not. Going. To. Tell. You.," he said repeating the words I said. I punched his right arm. He laughed and Helen rolled her eyes.
"Such teenagers," she said as she head to the backyard door. She looked back to us then said, "There's food inside, why don't I make some lunch for all of us. Then, I'll call the police to tell them that you're safe."
"I like the sound of that," I said as I watched Manic walking to Helen. As I looked at Manic, a fear started to grow. If Maria is warning me about Manic then I have to watch his every move from now on. But if he's dangerous then it'll be best not to hang out with him until I have more information on him.
He turned around to look at me and giving me the same kind smile like always. Somehow I can't see any warning label on him. Or in that matter, dangerous to any of us…
Maybe Maria was talking about someone else… I shrugged it off. It's best if I don't put much thought into this idea. So I put on a happy good luck smile and walk with Manic right inside the house.
Dear Journal,
It's September now. I haven't seen Sonic or Shadow yet, or any sign of Maria. It's only been 3 weeks since everything went to hell. The mall has been on every news and the talk of the late night shows. I even had news people showing up at the door asking me for questions. But Aunt Helen would yell at them to go home. I'm glad to have Helen on my side.
Lately I've been thinking of what Maria been taking about. I do think she was talking about Manic. For the time I been going to school, I realize he hangs out with Shadow. What perfect way of getting at Shadow than being friends with him. I just hope I'm wrong about this, all of this.
Funny but sad since that date with Manic, everyone believes me and Manic are dating for real. At first, I didn't believe everyone knew until a photo of us dancing went out for the whole school to see. I was going to yell at Manic for it, but even he looked more in shocked about it than I was.
Then, I realize Rouge is missing now. Everyone said Rouge was here for the first two days. I was at home voiding the news people. But once I got back, she's gone and so was Shadow. I have a feeling that everything is going wrong very fast. So I choose to do something about it. I'm not going to wait anymore.
Your friend,
Amy Rose
I put down the journal on my bed and grabbed my backpack. By the time I made it out the main door, Manic was waiting for me. He was wearing his red vest and black pants.
"Good to see you're wake," Manic said smiling.
"You too," I replied back as we started to walk to our school bus. Lately, I started to take the school bus more since I know Manic would be there. I almost thinking this might add on more rumors about us. I wonder if Manic is even worried about anything like that or is he eating it up like candy.
"So I've been thinking," Manic said as he looked forward, "Maybe I can make up for that one date like… How about dinner or maybe movies unless you like-" He kept on talking, but I can't handle this anymore. 3 weeks of pretending to date, I felt wrong. Ever since that night of Scourge and having to lie about it to him… All of this is wrong. "-So what do you think about it Amy?" he said. But I didn't answer him. I just stare down to the ground. Manic must have realize cause he asked, "Is something wrong?" I stopped and looked at him. He needs a better girl than me.
"Manic, I can't do this anymore," I said. He looked confused so I add, "I only see you as a brother and I believe we should stop dating. I'm sorry…"
For once I pictured a totally different way of him. He could yell at me or cuss me out, but he just stands there with a blank look.
"That's ok cause for a while, I was thinking of the same thing," he said scratching his head.
"Really?" I asked. I didn't think he would agree with me.
"Yeah and I'm sorry I made you go on that stupid date in the first place," he said looking to the floor with a sad look. I felt bad for breaking up with him. So I'll try to make him happy.
"Actually I did have a good time until everything went crazy," I said laughing a little. It's the truth. I did have a good time, just not the ending part.
"Very crazy," he added, and then we laughed together.
"Maybe we should support each other to find love somewhere else," I said smiling at him,
"I agree and I believe I found her," Manic said. Wait what?
"That was fast," I said sounded in shocked about it, "Who is she?"
"Oh you know her," he said. To me, I don't believe he knows that I know almost everyone. But I'll play long.
"I do?!" I asked.
"Yeah but I'm not going to tell you. I'm letting you find out for yourself," he said.
"Not fair!" I yelled.
"Everything is fair in love and war," he said as I shook me head as we made it to the bus stop. I felt like I didn't want to go.
I looked at Manic then I said, "Manic, I don't think I feel that well for school today."
"Maybe you should ditch school," he said, "Ditching is good for the soul."
"Should I?" I asked. Helen might be mad at me but I don't feel that well for school today.
"I think you should and beside I'll go pick up your homework for you," he said giving me the thumbs up.
I hugged him and yelled, "REALLY! YOUR AWESOME!"
"I know I am, so get home before the bus calls the school security on you," he said pushing me away from him.
"I don't think they could do that, but bye Manic!" I yelled.
"I'll see you later Amy!" Manic said as I ran home. I'm glad he understands, actually he understands me better than anyone I know. I finally made it home and pulled out the keys from my pocket. As I was about to put the keys into the lock, I stare at the doorknob with my key outside the lock. I could push myself to put it in, but all my thoughts where running round my head. 3 weeks ago was crazy and messed up, but why haven't I seen Shadow or Sonic yet? You would have believed one of them would be here by now. Sadden by everything, I need to talk to one of them. But where could they be…
I've looked everywhere, the school, streets, and stores. Is there a place I've forgotten? Then, it hit me, there's one place I haven't checked. And I bet his there right now. I run out of the yard to my Aunt's house and run to the city. I pray his there…
Finally. I made it to where that whole night started: The Station Square Mall or use to be the mall. All that was left of the mall is the dark burns of walls and gray ashes on the floor. Some of the building is here but mostly on the ground. I'm amazed no one cleaned it up yet. I guess the city doesn't have the money to pay for someone to clean it.
I looked round the mess. I couldn't find him… Not even a shape of a hedgehog.
I gave up hope… There's no way he would be here or anywhere. I sat down on what looked like a big, black, metal bar and my eyes stared down to the ground. Maybe I should just head home…
After what seems like 2 minutes, I heard footsteps walking to me. Then, they came to a stop. I looked up to find a hedgehog staring right at me from a distance. There standing was a male hedgehog that's been in most of my dreams and my hero of that night against Scourge. The black with red stripes looked at me with his deep red eyes. He didn't moved or looked in shock of my presence being there. I smiled. As I was about to get up, I said, "Hello, I was looking for you and I was wondering if I could take a minute or two of your time too talk with you unless your busy right now."
He shook his head and smiled back at me. "Actually, I was hoping you would show up because I've been waiting for you… Miss Rose," Shadow said as he walked over to me.
