Chapter 12: Repeating Echoes
Trinity- Undertaker's shop, London 1888
Slowly I opened my eyes,as my side throbbed in pain, to find myself lying in a coffin. I sat up with a start as the events of the fight came back to me, including the fact I was in a coffin exactly like the one I was nearly in. Without a second thought, I vaulted out of it and hit the floor hard enough to remind my body that it was sore.
"Ow," I hissed as I laid against a coffin as I waited for the pain to pass. "This is why I hate leaving the office. But I was the one who agreed to do this because O wanted to do something different and on my own."
I looked around the room and then groaned as the reason for me being in this mess came back to me. "Where is my bag?"
Slowly, I got to my feet and looked around the dark, cobweb filled room. About a yard away was my bag sitting on top of a closed coffin. What was with...oh right this was probably a mortician's shop. I really needed to get a grip and get those files to Helix before she found out I'd screwed up this time.
Using various items around the shop for support, I moved towards my bag with one hand pressed against the throbbing wound on my side. As I leaned against the coffin the bag sat on for support, I rifled through it desperately trying to find the folder that contained the files and growing even more frantic the longer I couldn't find them. I hoped the fight hadn't been a ruse for a member of the Organization to get a hold of the files and take Helix out before she even knew what was going on. I was so going to get read the riot act by my boss if I couldn't locate and retrieve the missing files and Helix was finally going to have an excuse to kill me, like she keeps threatening every time I manage to screw something up.
"Looking for something Dearie?" A voice asked causing me to jump and turn towards it's source. I about screamed when I saw the strange man who had killed my opponent standing in a doorway holding a tray with a pot of tea and a couple of beakers.
"Why do you think I'm looking for something?" I asked warily as I grabbed my bag and began to back up towards what I hoped was the exit to this creepy place. Screw the mission I had to get out of there and back to headquarters alive. I could just recite the info later, from memory, when she finally turned up at HQ, yeah that would work. Okay again, why do I always end up in these kinds of situations where I always had to escape when I left Headquarters?
"You have no need to be afraid Dearie, I'm not like the other friend of yours," the creepy man said as he set the tray down on a coffin on the other side of the room and reached into his robes.
"Yeah, but you killed that other person and I have no clue whose side you are really on," I whispered as I finally felt the familiar shape of a door knob under my hand.
"He he hee, I do thank you forgiving me another customer, though there will be no one to appreciate her after I make her beautiful again."
"Well you don't want anyone else she knows to be around unless you want a war," I said as I turned the knob.
He chuckled as he pulled the set of files I had been looking for out of his robes. "I know Dearie, I read theses papers of yours while you were sleeping."
"Then you know I have to take those files to someone, so I need them back," I said as I moved towards.
"He hee, I know Dearie. Though the secondary contact you have listed is mighty interesting, Trinity."
"How do you know my name?" I said as I started to back away again.
"It was in the files as the name of the messenger," He said as he poured the tea into the beakers. "Though that is not the first time I've heard that name in me shop."
"Oh and who told you that, " I said moving closer hoping that I could just grab the file and make a run for it till I could get somewhere that I could transport myself back to the Phantomhive Manor.
"The same person who you are to be delivering the papers to," He said as I froze in place.
"Then who are you?"
"Me name is Undertaker," He said as he moved forward and placed a beaker in my hands.
"Wait as in the Undertaker! The one who was my secondary way of passing on the information"
"Now don't you faint on me Dearie. Miss Helix mentioned some of your funnier exploits during our meetings."
"So you're an actual reaper?" I asked as I finally noticed his strange aura. "Like what Helix mentioned in her reports about the Jack the Ripper murders?"
By that point, I disregarded any thought of danger and moved closer to him wanting to find out more about that odd group of supernaturals.
"Ah, I see you are curious now Dearie," Undertaker said as I was forced to take a seat on one of the coffins when the pain turned from a dull ache back to intense pain. Right, I really need to remember what effects an adrenaline rush has on the body in the future, or Helix would just knock me unconscious for a couple of hours for being an idiot.
"Why wouldn't I be. I may hate leaving my desk, but I always enjoy learning new things. After all, there is nothing in our files about your kind and I really would like to know as much as you will let me know."
"Hee, you should ask your friend. She has more information than you know." he said as he turned his attention to his tea.
"Let me guess, because you gave her the information she holds. How well do you know Helix?" I asked as my side started to bug me again. "Hey you wouldn't happen to have any pain killers around here would you?"
"Nothing that you are probably used to Dearie."
"Right," I said as I wanted to facepalm myself for forgetting where in time I was. "No aspirin anywhere around here and I should probably get checked out by a doctor back at headquarters before Helix finds out and finishes the job."
Carefully, I slid of of the coffin and stood up, trying to not aggravate my wounds any further than they already were.
The Undertaker frowned. "Do you need any help Dearie?"
"I've got it," I said as I rifled through my papers. "Can you pass that set of files that you have on to Helix for me, without telling her what all went on around here?"
"Great thanks," I said without giving him the chance to say no. "I'll drop by here some other time when I'm not bleeding and in pain."
"What the heck happened to you?" A voice demanded as the front door closed.
I turned around to find myself face to face with a fuming Helix.
"Hee hee, looks like you can pass the information to her yourself," Undertaker said adding tension to the stare down between me and Helix. I was so screwed.
