The first thing that Annie felt was a sharp pain on the back of her head. she groaned slightly and pulled her head up. Everything was so fuzzy, but she could tell she was not where she was supposed to be. There was a fire-or some sort of light rather-a few feet away with two hooded figures sitting on either side of it, cackling like a man in a horror movie. Annie blinked a few times and she could see them better, but their hoods hid their faces. She knew who the smaller one was: Draco Malfoy, and she had a fairly good idea of who the bigger one was, but if those people were who she thought they were, then where was-
"Wormtail!" Hissed the bigger hooded man from the fire, "Stop dwelling over that silly girl and come here! We have a party to plan."
A what? Annie tried to act as if she was still unconscious, but couldn't ignore the fact that she was tied six inches off the ground to a wooden pole. She saw her father walk by her solemnly and sit with his back facing towards her by the fire.
Annie then felt something she never had felt in her life: fear. She trembled all over from it. She wanted to cry. However for herself she had no fear. She knew why Voldemort had her here: She was bait.
Harry hadn't a clue why he didn't go to Dumbledore. He was one of the most trustworthy people on this planet, but sitting in the moist dark cave as Hermione rambled on about the letters, Harry knew he had made the right choice.
Hermione had found out that the letters had "added up". The first letter of each word in ther letters that Annie had gotten spelled out 'Wormtail' without the "L".
Sirius sat and listened intently, then turned to Harry. "And what about your dream?"
Harry took a deep breath and explained his dream to the best of his ability. He couldn't believe he had remembered what he had all this time, but with every word it came more clearly until a few minutes he had spilled everything out. Ron surprisingly said nothing, but just sat in the corner shivering. Sirius sat and listened until Harry was finished.
"Well," he said standing to where he was totally erect, "That graveyard you described, Harry I know where it is, Myer's field sounds like the place I suppose I should go in and get her,"
Harry stepped back in shock, "What about us?" he said
Sirius put his hand on Harry's shoulder, "It's quite understandable that you want to go, but I can't let you," he said.
"Why not?" Hermione asked, "We rescued you from Fudge didn't we?"
Sirius nodded but said, "Yes but then you weren't dealing with the Dark Lord, Hermione; You are to young--"
"Don't tell me I'm too young!" Harry exclaimed before he knew what he was doing, "I will have to face him someday won't I? Why not now?"
"You're feelings for Annie are strong I understand that," Sirius said trying to be rational, but instead he gave Harry more coal in the fire.
"My feelings for Annie," he said with a laugh, "If I'm old enough to feel love than I should be old enough to fight for it-- no matter what."
That last remark left a silence in the cave like nothing Harry had ever known before. No crickets chirped( J/W do y'all even have crickets?). Not even Buckbeak moved a muscle. The only one who spoke was Hermione.
"And friendship..."
Ron was the next to chime in, but he looked paler than usual, "and loyalty... You will be leaving with us, Sirius, or be denying us of everything this world is be based on."
Harry decided it was best not show his shock that Ron had said something that profound, but it had worked, Sirius gave a acquiescent sigh.
"Grab your brooms," he said.
Annie could feel her ropes bearing into her wrists, cutting them like dull knives. She felt for a fleeting instant that she could sympathies with Sir Nicholas, but then realized that this pain wasn't at her neck, but still, she wouldn't make fun of him anymore when he reminisced about it.
It had been an hour since she had initially woke up, and miraculously the men hadn't detected her. They had been talking about plans to "retrieve the light", which Annie assumed was Harry, but she hadn't a clue why they were referring to him like that. Her father seemed not into the conversation, but from what Annie could see was he sat with his hands on his knees.
"So tonight is the night then, master?" Draco said with a hint of glee in his voice.
"Yes, young Malfoy. The Light shall be taken on this night. Ironic though, that the only thing that can make me totally immortal is something meant for good," Voldemort shrugged.
Malfoy laughed, "As you say, master, Irony is only what we make it."
What is this? Annie thought to herself, a flattery committee? Man if this is all these guys do, you can reject my application!
Wormtail made a move to get up, and Annie hung her head; she kept an eye open to watch him though.
He turned to look at Annie, coming up right close to her. He had pale blue eyes, that were filled with what Annie thought was remorse. Wormtail put his hand up to Annie's face, making to touch her, but Annie wouldn't have it. Thankfully her feet weren't tied, because she hurled them up and kicked them into Wormtail's gut. He groaned and fell to the ground as Annie yelled: "Get away from me you son-of-a-biscuit-eater!"
Wormtail was still rolling on the ground, but Voldemort and Malfoy had started over to her, not even giving her father a second look.
"What colorful language this girl has," the cold voice said not eye-to-eye with her.
Annie felt a strange feeling surge through her. She wasn't sure if it was hatred, fear, a mixture of that, or something else, but it wasn't something she felt every day.
To her surprise, she saw a white smile grow across Voldemort's face.
"So she is the Carrier then," Draco said.
"Do you doubt me, Malfoy?" Voldemort said maliciously.
Annie saw terror spread across Malfoy's face, "N-N-No M-Master,"
Annie was confused, what in the world was a Carrier? She still felt that strange feeling in her and it was getting stronger. On an impulse she looked down at herself to find that she was glowing! She could see specks of light coming from inside her skin. She closed her eyes the feeling getting stronger. Tears leaked out of the corner of her eyes. This was the light that they were talking about; she was the light.
She took a deep breath, "I don't suppose you're going to tell me what this is are you?"
Voldemort gave her another grin, "Now if I were to tell you, it wouldn't make that any fun for me now would it?" He turned, and walked back to the fire.
Draco gave Annie a look of superiority and joined his master.
Wormtail had gathered himself and now was standing up a short distance from Annie, "If I come closer," he said in a high pitched voice, "Will you hurt me?"
Annie felt sorry for him and simply said, "I can't make any promises."
Wormtail, to Annie's surprise, let out a hollow laugh, "You are just like your mother." He stepped up to Annie.
"That's not exactly what I wanted to hear from you," Annie said coldly.
Wormtail frowned, "And what did you want to hear from me?"
"Why you killed my mother would be a start," Annie said relentlessly. She had no sympathy for this man.
Wormtail's expression faded slightly, "Indeed you are like her," he said, "she had dreams too." He sat on the ground looking up at Annie, "There is a lot to tell."
"I'm all ears,"
It was an awkward position, Wormtail sat on the ground talking up to Annie who was tied to a long pole, unable to move anything but her feet.
Wormtail sighed, "Your mother was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. She was radiant, fierce and loyal. I could've never asked for anything more..." he stopped.
"And then," Annie prompted.
"And then," Wormtail gave Annie a sad smile, "And then I fell into an awful trap."
"My master had already tracked the Light to Nicole, and had decided to use me to get to her." he shivered, "Such a terrible feeling it was not having control of my actions. The curse he put on me melded my mind to his. I knew his thoughts. He knew mine. Only a few slick words he had to speak to where I would be mesmerized. My cowardice came from those miserable spells. In fact Nicole did have the light her; she also had you. Neither my master nor I knew the Light would be transferred to you."
Annie could imply the rest, "So when you killed her..."
"She gave birth," he sighed, but not as melancholy as his previous sighs had been, "The sight of you, my daughter, was just enough to give me strength to fight my Master's spell. And I knew that he would come after you when he found that he couldn't extract the Light from you. I knew that America was a place that my master would not go for a long time, so I put you there. I cast a spell on the orphanage to keep you there, and one on myself to keep my master from knowing when I went back. I had to you see, or he would've tracked us, but after the incident with Lilly, James, and Harry I had nowhere to turn. My master's spell could've been broken, but no one would trust me. I was stuck." He hung his head, "I should have stayed with you. Then maybe you would not be here."
He was silent. So that was it. Annie sighed and leaned her head on the pole. This man was merely a person who had been taken advantage of his whole life. Used like a throw pillow, and likely to be disposed of, with nothing but regrets for things he had no control over.
"Master!" Annie heard Malfoy call and running up, "Master midnight approaches!"
Annie looked down at Wormtail who had teary eyes.
"It is a shame your friends couldn't join us," Voldemort said walking over to look Annie in the face, "I guess 'love' isn't in Potter's vocabulary."
Annie spat in his face, "Bite me."
Voldemort grinned, "Such colorful language," he said, "Americans..." he muttered as he walked away. "Come, Wormtail," he said suddenly, and Annie's father stood up robotically, "We must prepare for the excretion... it looks as if you get to take the life of another person you love tonight."
Holding back tears, Annie started working her heavily bruised hands out of the cores ropes.
"Wormtail!" Hissed the bigger hooded man from the fire, "Stop dwelling over that silly girl and come here! We have a party to plan."
