Happy Reading :)
The Christmas Ball was now just two weeks away and our two Gryffindor boys sat in the Great Hall on a Saturday morning eating breakfast and discussing their lack of dates for the fore mentioned event.
"Why don't you ask Poppy McLaggen? I've heard she has a thing for you" Scorpius smirked.
"Please. I'd rather go with Lily than her. Plus her parents dated Uncle Ron and Aunt Hermione. That would be really weird." Albus replied.
"I thought you were going to ask Alice Longbottom? What happened to her?"
"Adam Davies asked her before I could." Albus said bitterly. "Nevermind. I'm going stag. I've heard about my Dad's and Uncle Ron's Yule Ball. I'd rather enjoy with you guys than hang out with a girl I don't like. What about you?"
"Well I think I'll ask Rose. If she says yes then I won't have to waste my evening on some random girl and otherwise I'll go stag with you."
Just then Rose walked in the Great Hall with Ella and Lily. Taking the seat next to Scorpius she greeted them.
"Good Morning guys" she greeted cheerfully.
"So what's the plan for today?" Albus asked as he continued with his breakfast.
"The usual I guess. But we'll have to go to Honeydukes. I'm running out of Chocolate frogs." Rose said.
"We have to buy robes for the ball. Do you mind helping us out?" Scorpius asked.
"Of course not. We can go to Madame Milkins. I've heard they have a new collection especially for balls." Rose replied.
"Since when does Rose Weasley know what's new in the stores?" Albus asked teasingly.
Throwing her napkin at him she said, " I just overheard some fifth years talking about it the Common Room."
They completed their breakfast in silence when suddenly Scorpius asked, "Hey Rose, do you have a date for the ball yet?"
"Um….yes" Rose replied blushing.
There was a sinking feeling in his stomach and his fists clenched automatically though he had no idea why. He wanted to break that person's head for no reason whatsoever.
Trying to sound calm he asked, "Who?"
By now Rose was blushing so much that her face practically matched her hair. Keeping her head down and trying to hide her face with her hair she mumbled something.
"What?" Albus asked.
"Andy White" she said a little louder.
Both Albus and Scorpius turned to look at the end of the Gryffindor Table where Andy was sitting and laughing with James and Fred.
"You can't go with him. He's James friend plus he is in sixth year." Albus said his anger and protectiveness catching on.
"I agree with Albus. He's way too old for you. You should go with someone from our year." Scorpius said trying to keep his anger for a certain Ravenclaw at bay.
"Don't be ridiculous you too. Andy's a perfectly nice person and no he is not too old for me too." Rose retorted angrily.
"And you know this how? You barely talk to him." Albus said.
"I know him enough to know that. And how do you know whether we talk or not." Rose huffed as she got up and left the Great Hall but not before giving Andy a small smile before leaving. This did not go unnoticed by both Albus and Scorpius and it only flared their anger.
"What do you mean by whether we know you talk to him or not. We are practically together throughout the day. I think I'd noticed whom you talk to or not." Albus asked angrily as he followed Rose to the Quidditch Pitch.
Just then something clicked in Scorpius' mind and he ran ahead to stop Rose and turn her around, "So that's why you have been spending all your time in the Library lately." He asked accusingly.
"So what?" Rose huffed and stomped her foot. "And why are you being like this. I understand Albus pulling off the protective cousin crap but what's wrong with you?"
Lost for words he just opened and closed his mouth several times. That's what I'm trying to figure out. He thought but was intelligent enough not to say that. Thankfully, Albus proved to be the best friend every guy dreams about and came to his rescue.
"Don't fight with him Rose. He's just being a good best friend and looking out for you. And does James know about you both? "
Taking a deep breath Rose said, " Look I appreciate you both looking out for me. But I'm not a kid anymore. And I haven't told James yet. He is Andy's best friend so that's his job."
"Does Uncle Ron know?" Albus asked smirking.
"Um no." Rose replied uneasily. "But Mum knows and she said she'll take to him so I don't have to worry about it. Can we just drop this subject? What about you guys? Who are you both going with?" Rose asked changing the subject.
"We are going stag." Scorpius mumbled and started his way back to the castle. He shook his head discreetly as both his best friends followed trying to get rid of this alien feeling he was getting in the pit of his stomach.
The two weeks before the Ball went in a blur, at least for Rose. As she juggled spending time on her studies, quidditch, Ella, Al and Scorp and Andy she barely had time to think about the approaching ball unlike her other dorm mates. Though she loved every bit of it she resented not being able to spend significant time with her two best friends.
Scorpius on the other hand was not quite happy with this arrangement. After the day of their argument two weeks back he had spent his time alone debating about his feeling for Rose. He had tried to figure out that feeling which he seemed to get everytime Rose was with Andy and decided that he was just doing his job as her best friend. He was just being protective of her in a totally platonic way. Eventhough he repeated this as a mantra in his head everytime he saw them together there was still a voice in the back of his head which would pop up every once in a while and say May be you like her. But he would just shake his head and return back to whatever he was doing trying to get Rose out his mind.
But all his effort was futile. Everytime he tried getting Rose out of his head, he would end up staring at her or thinking about her. He started noticing this about her that a normal best friend wouldn't. He shook his head and scolded himself. He was sounding like the people in his Mum's romance novels. It's not like he had read any.
Sighing and giving up on his Charms essay he headed out of the Library hoping to go on a walk near the Black Lake when he ran into Rose.
"Hey Scorp" Rose said as she got up from the ground dusting herself.
"Hi Rose" Scorpius blushed as he gathered her books and mumbled an apology.
"It's ok. Where are you off to?"
"Just for a walk." Scorpius replied.
"Oh. Mind if I join?" Rose asked grinning.
"Of course not." Scorpius said trying to mask the grin which was trying to break through as he enjoyed the prospect of spending some time with Rose.
"Just give me a minute. I'll keep these in my dorm and be right back." Rose said as she gave Fat Lady the password after Scorpius nodded.
Once Rose returned they both headed outside and talking, teasing and laughing just like before and the whole while Scorpius was smiling capturing each moment in his head.
It was the night of the Ball and Scorpius was not really eager to attend it. Though he wanted to enjoy the Ball just like any other student of the Hogwarts population he didn't want to see Rose with Andy. He had been grumpy all day long and luckily he was not the only one. While he was moping over Rose, Albus was busy moping over Alice alternating between staring dreamily at her, glaring at her date or just giving long sighs.
Scorpius would have been annoyed if he wasn't following the same routine himself. Rose had been present with them most of the day but after having a small snowball fight with the boys in hopes of cheering them up she along with Ella and Lily went to their dorm to get ready for the ball.
At present, Scorpius and Albus were waiting in the Gryffindor Common Room waiting for Rose to show up. Both were looking pretty handsome in their respective dress robes. While Scorpius wore a traditional black dress robes, Albus opted for a Muggle tuxedo.
All the girls that had descended so far from the girls dormitory had looked at the pair and either swooned or tried flirting with them but to no fruitful result. They were about to call for Rose from the stairs when they heard someone descending from the stairs.
As Scorpius looked up his breath caught and his heart started to beat faster than a Firebolt. To say Rose was looking beautiful would be an understatement. She was wearing a floor length white coloured dress with intricate sequence design in light pink colour. The sleeves were made of net and came till her wrists. Her hair which were usually wavy and curvy were now in a beautiful updo and her red hair seemed to compliment her dress in a great way. Her make up was light and was barely visible and it seemed to bring out her blue eyes beautifully. All in all they looked like a princess and at that moment Scorpius would have done anything to be his prince.
"How do I look?" Rose asked nervously as she twirled around in her dress for Scorpius and Albus to admire.
"You look brilliant Rose." Albus smiled reassuringly."And if Andy tries something tonight then tell him he will have the whole Weasley clan on his back." He added threateningly.
Laughing she swatted Albus on the arm and turned to Scorpius.
"How do I look Scorp?"
"Beautiful" Scorpius said in an awed voice barely registering what he was saying. Blushing Rose smiled and then took Albus arm and connected her other with Scorpius dragging them outside the Common Room.
Once they reached the Entrance Hall, Albus and Scorpius bid her goodbye as they left her to look for Andy though a bit reluctantly on the latter's part. Rose looked around the Hall searching for Andy. She was still looking around when she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around just to come face to face with Andy himself. Smiling she took in his appearance.
Andy was wearing dress robes just like Scorpius but a bit elaborate design. On someone else, they might have looked a bit weird but due to his build thanks to Quidditch he was looking pretty handsome.
"You look beautiful" he said taking her hand and kissing it.
"You don't look half bad yourself" she teased and took his arm that he offered.
Together they entered the Great Hall. The Great Hall was breathtaking. It was decorated beautifully. The ceiling had been charmed to show snow falling which seemed to melt just before touching the people. There was mistletoe in various corners while the house tables have been vanished. There was a long table at one end of the Hall where drinks and food was kept. The stage was set and a band was playing famous wizarding songs as well as some muggle songs. Many couples were dancing on the dance floor.
"May I have this dance?" Andy asked and offered her his hand. Smiling Rose took it and together they joined the other students on the dance floor.
Later that night Scorpius sat sulking in one corner of the room. He had been at this since the start of the Ball. He had danced with a girl or two who had been brave enough to ask him but otherwise this corner had been his companion for the night. He saw Albus and Rose dancing on the dance floor. He smiled when he saw the cousins laugh at something.
Albus and Rose were really close. Sometimes he felt jealous because it seemed like both the cousins in their own world but that was just a minor thing. The only person he was majorly jealous was Andy White. He glared at the said boy who was talking to his mates near the dance floor occasionally shooting smile as he watched Rose dance.
He had wanted to dance with Rose but never got the chance. Whenever he got up to ask her for a dance either Andy would come up or one of her numerous cousins. He had almost decided to give up on the idea and go back to his dorm when he saw both Albus and Rose head his way as the song ended.
"Do you want a drink Rosie?" Albus asked as Rose sat down next to Scorpius.
"No. Thank you." Rose smiled. Albus was about to sit down when he saw something across the room and made his way there.
Taking a deep breath and gathering his courage, Scorpius turned to Rose and asked, " May I have this dance?" with a charming smile on his face. Or that's what he hoped it looked like.
"Why not sir." Rose said and both made their way on the dance floor as a slow song came up. Scorpius put his hands on the small of her back while she wrapped hers around his neck. They dance to the song, talking about how their nights went so far and how Scorpius was forced to take dance lessons as a kid by his grandmother.
"I am really tired. I think I'll be heading to bed now." Scorpius said as they both finished their third dance together.
"I'll be heading to bed to. I'll go and meet Andy then. I'll see you in the morning?" Rose asked.
"Yup. You should go. Good Night." Scorpius said.
He was about to leave the Hall when Rose called his name.
"Yes?" He asked turning around.
Rose hugged him and planting a soft kiss on his cheek said, " Thanks for the dances. You made the Ball really enjoyable." Giving him a last smile she headed off inside to look for Andy.
With a large grin on his face and a hand covering his cheek, Scorpius headed to his dorm where he slept till the next afternoon with a big smile on his face.
