Disclaimer: I do not own Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or the characters. But Lena is my own original character!
Chapter 12: Dead or Alive
"Lena it's not that bad,"
"Yes, it is,"
"Lena you're just like us now,"
"But what will my parents think?" Lena sobbed harder. She sat on the edge of the sidewalk with Mikey. Her new, fuzzy bunny ears flopped down in her face making them wet with her tears. Lena's blonde hair was soaked with her tears; as much as Mikey tried to push her hair back, it would always come right back. The fur on her hands was also sopped with her salty tears.
"They will still love you. They are your parents," Mikey rubbed Lena's back as she sniffed. "Plus, if you ask nicely, Donnie might be able to turn you back."
Lena's eyes met the turtle's as he finished his sentence, "How?"
"To be honest, I have no idea. But he changed April's dad back from being a mutant," Mikey shrugged and stood up. He held out a hand and waited for Lena to take it. As she did, Lena rubbed her nose and eyes.
"So, what now? Am I going to be pricked and prodded by your brother?"
"Most likely. But first, we need Leo to see you. He's been nonstop training and very depressive lately," Mikey started walking towards the lair. Lena hooked her arm through Mikey's and followed his lead. What she didn't notice was a slight pink that crept up to Mikey's cheeks when she walked with him. She didn't think much of it; she was just trying to keep herself stable.
"I miss Glenda,"
"Who's Glenda?"
"My maid. She basically raised me. When my parents weren't around she would take me into the city," Lena smiled at the thought. Mikey nodded and checked his T-Phone.
"Raph's wondering where I am. Raph also has been off lately. He has no one to make snarky comments to, and for the person to return the comments," Mikey laughed as Lena tripped over a pebble.
"How has Donnie been?"
"Off his rocker. Ever since Leo passed out from lack of sleep and food, Donnie has been trying to find you,"
"How about you?" Lena noticed that Mikey went silent at her question.
"I've been the only one going out at night to find you. Leo won't do it because he is busy training. Raph won't do it because he's trying to get Leo out of his funk. Donnie has been helping me with locations on where you may have wandered off to. This was the only time where I didn't go off his directions and look, I have found you," Mikey smiled. "They only thing I'm wondering is how you became a rabbit. Did you touch any bunnies?"
"No,"
"It may have been in the formula they were testing then," Mikey shrugged as they arrived at a sewer cap. Mikey motioned for her to go down first as he removed the cap. As soon as Lena dropped down in the sewage water, she waved the air in front of her nose.
"One thing I don't miss about this place is the stench," Lena laughed as Mikey dropped down.
"Come on, let's go," Mikey laughed and pushed Lena playfully.
…
"What am I going to say? 'Hey guys look, I'm a rabbit now!'" Lena bit her nails as she stood outside the lair.
"Be yourself. Maybe they'll know it's you if you do that," Mikey walked into the living room. There was no one in there, but there were some strange noises coming from the Dojo.
"Who are we going to see first?"
"Raph, I'm pretty sure he will understand,"
"Understand what?" Lena spun around at the sound of a different voice. She saw a taller turtle with a purple mask one, Donnie. Lena cried and ran up to him. She hugged him and laughed. "Who are you?"
Lena stopped hugging him at the question. She pulled herself away and felt her ears flatten on her back.
"It's Lena,"
"No it isn't,"
"Yes it is,"
"She isn't a mutant,"
"Have you ever thought about that I could have become a mutant?" Lena crossed her arms and watched as Donnie's expression began to soften with realization.
"No, you can't be," Donnie wrung his hands. "No! No, Lena. Please don't tell me that you're a mutant now!"
"Would you rather me lie to you or tell you the truth?" Lena's face hardened as Donnie shook her.
"Lena, I'm so sorry," Donnie hugged her and sighed.
"It's fine. It was my fault anyways," Lena softened and patted Donnie's head.
"I'm going to have to run some tests to make sure your body is stable. I'm just glad you are back; everything has been different without you," Donnie smiled and turned towards his lab. "But I would suggest that you see everyone first before we run the tests." Lena nodded and looked at Mikey.
"Let's go see Raph,"
…
"Why a rabbit?" Raph sat down next to Lena.
"How would I know? I didn't touch any rabbits," Lena shrugged and picked at the link on the pillow. She always wondered what Raph's room looked like; but it was exactly how she imagined it, gross and messy. Raph took the news a lot better than Donnie did; he actually recognized her when she walked in.
"It doesn't make sense," Raph grumbled and rubbed his temples. "I'm not going to worry about this right now, what we need to do is show you to Leo. He has been freaking out about you, saying really weird stuff and isolating himself."
Lena shook her head and wondered why Leo would do this to himself, "I should probably see Splinter too huh?"
"Yeah," Raph shrugged and got up from his bed. He and Mikey exchanged looks and opened the door for Lena to head out. They walked to the Dojo hearing some grunting noises and a sand bag being hit. Lena pushed aside the curtains and walked into the room. She saw Leo's face was shiny from sweat and the bandages on his hands were tearing.
"He's been like this for days," Mikey whispered to Lena. She saw Leo's eyes were blood shot from lack of sleep. Mikey nudged Raph and motioned towards Leo; he seemed to get the message and walked towards Leo.
Lena saw Raph get behind the sand bag and hold it so it stopped swinging. Leo continued to punch the bag as Raph said, "We found Lena."
"She's dead," Lena's stomach dropped at his comment. Did he really think she was dead?
"Leo, she's right here,"
"No she isn't. Stop playing pranks on me,"
"But, Leo-"
"She couldn't have lived! The explosion almost killed me; she can't be alive, and it's all my fault," Leo stopped punching the bag to poke Raph in the chest. Lena walked up to Leo and tugged at his arm. He whirled around to face her and as soon as he did, his expression changed to pure shock.
"I'm right here," Leo said quietly. Leo shook his head in disbelief and reached to touch her new ears.
"No," his voice was barely audible, "Lena, I'm so sorry."
"Leo, I'm fine,"
"No you aren't. You're a mutant,"
"No, I'm Lena. Just because I look different doesn't mean I'll act different," Lena smiled and hugged Leo. "At least I'm alive."
