I know, it's been forever since I updated! Wow, have I been busy (and maybe a bit lazy) Don't kill me, and here's chapter 12!
"Do we have any old brooms?" I asked my mother the next morning.
"Why?" Mom replied. "Are you going to ask Elphaba to give you a flying lesson?"
"No! Well, it's not a bad idea..."
"Kate." Her voice grew stern all of a sudden. Did she really think Elphaba and I would fly around the house on brooms and break everything?!
"I'm trying to find objects that have to do with Wicked," I explained. "Maybe we can use one of them to get Elphaba back to Oz."
Sadly, out of all of the cleaning objects in the house, we did not own a broom. "I guess I'll just have to get one for my birthday tomorrow," I joked, chuckling.
Elphaba, who had started to actually eat now, paused after chewing and asked, "Your birthday is tomorrow?!"
"Yep," I answered, smiling. "I'm finally going to be no longer a pre-teenager, but simply... teenager." And that's when I realized I sounded kind of like Glinda when she changed her name, and I wanted to face-palm. Not only because I possibly gave Elphaba a PMF (Painful Memory Flashback. You may ask, "Is this a real psychological term?" Well, it is now), but I also sounded like a girly-girl.
"In that case, I ought to get you something," Elphaba suggested.
"No, you don't have to," I said. "Just the fact that you're here, talking to me, is the best birthday present in the history of birthday presents!" This made her smile, and I smiled back.
"Not to ruin the moment or anything," my mother began, "but, Kate? You still have school." I groaned. "Why can't I just spend the day with Elphie?" I whined.
"That was a one-time thing," Dad reminded, coming into the room. "That was because we had a... well, situation. But you need to go to school today."
I begrudgingly got myself ready for the day. When I had my backpack in hand, I kissed my father good-bye and hugged Elphaba. And I was off to school.
During the school day, I finally decided to tell my friends about Elphaba. I labeled the whole situation as "Operation Guacamole." Mainly because Elphaba and guacamole had two main things in common: (1) They are both green and (2) I love them both. Well, obviously I love Elphaba way, WAY more than chip dip. Kind of a given, people.
Don't get me wrong, my friends were extremely skeptical at first. But once they saw how serious I was, they stopped assuring me I was crazy and really listened to me. They understood the situation, and they promised that they would do what they could to help.
At the end of the school day, I got a big surprise when Elphaba came to pick me up! Not caring if anyone thought I was crazy, I grinned and rushed into the green girl's arms. I saw a couple of people point and whisper at the corner of my eye. Elphaba seemed to notice, too, and I noticed that her eyes seemed sad.
"Don't pay attention to them," I whispered. My friend smiled at this.
"Who is this?" a teacher working the pickup line inquired.
"Oh... she's my sister!" I lied quickly. Although, it wasn't really a lie, since we had grown so close...
"I didn't know you had a sister," the teacher said, still suspicious.
"Well, that's because she isn't home very often," I countered. "She was away at college. I guess she came to surprise me by coming home for my birthday tommorow."
"That's right; I did!" Elphaba played along.
The teacher still wasn't buying it, though. "Come with me," she ordered as she proceeded to lead us to the office.
Well, now that I'm done with my school play and everything, I should be able to update more often. Thank you for your patience!
