A/N Sorry it took me so long, moved house and started a regional college, but do not fear I am back on track and updates will be on time from now on. Thank you for sticking with me and this story !

Disclaimer- I have nothing to do with Hawaii Five 0 except what my imagination stirs up!

Danny POV

I was the first to wake up, which was weird as normally Steve would be up and have his morning swim over him, be on his second coffee and sitting at his father's desk cleaning his service weapon and sniper rifle. I rolled off the sofa and stretched myself awake. Quietly I made my way upstairs to check on Grace and Steve. I entered the room tip-toeing in case Steve was still sleeping I wasn't too worried about Grace, she is the heaviest sleeper I have ever seen, she would sleep through the end of the world.

I tip toed in and seen that Steve was lying on his back, Grace lying on his chest sound asleep. He was staring at the celling deep in thought about God only knows what, the almost calm look on his face reassured me he wasn't thinking about Korea. I went on over and sat at his feet on the bed; it was only when the bed dipped with my weight that he noticed I was there.

"Morning Danno"

"Why are you not up swimming and gun cleaning and making me exhausted by just watching you?"

He smiled

"I'm not allowed to get up"

"The nurse is sleeping and I'm off doctor duty until she wakes up."

He held up his finger towards me indicating that I remain silent, he went to get up and all of a sudden Graces arms tightened around him, pulling him back. He was smiling when he lay back down and once again remained still. I couldn't help but match his smile as I seen Grace's face settle back to peaceful sleep.

"See I'm not allowed"

"Even in her sleep she doesn't want to let you go"

Then there was an awkward silence, the intensity of it made me look at Steve who was clearly struggling with what he wanted to say

"Spit it out "

Then for only a second there was a slight blush on his cheeks

"I … erm … I woke up and she was here, I think I remember both of you talking to me last night but I'm not sure if it happened or if it was a dream"

I nodded

"You had a nightmare, a bad one at that. Grace was here with you by the time I made it up the stairs. You woke up terrified and with what you managed to say I think you where dreaming that Wo Fat was torturing Grace, as soon as you seen her and felt her arms around you, you relaxed and fell back asleep. A few moments later Grace slept too, I didn't want to wake her and send her back to her bed because she looked peaceful that she was near you and content that you were okay. You held your arms around her happy knowing she was here and safe and not with Wo Fat. So knowing that leaving her with you would help you both sleep better I let her be"

He nodded

"Did I scream?"

"Yeah you did"

He shook his head

"I'm sorry Danno; I didn't mean to wake either of you. You shouldn't have to hear that, neither should Grace."

He was angry at himself for showing us his weakness

"Steven, a nightmare is not something you can control especially after what you have been through. I am relieved that both Grace and I where here, it was what you needed. Last night the only thing that would have let you go back to sleep, was knowing that Grace was safe and close. You do not apologise for showing weakness in front of us, you do not apologise that we had to witness it, you do not apologise for something that you have absolutely no control over"

I didn't mean it to turn into a rant, but I'm glad it did. It put him in line, showed him that no matter what we are here for him.

"Still, it's not something a child should witness"

I nodded in silent agreement, it is not something a child should see, especially an adult they love and admire.

"Yes but my child is no ordinary child, she sees the world in a different light to us and sometimes she is exactly what we need to make us feel better"

He looked down at her and shifted in the bed her grip tightened once more

"Danno I don't want to wake her when she looks so peaceful, but I've been awake for two and a half hours and I really need the bathroom"

I laughed

"You don't need to worry about waking her up; Grace will wake up when Grace wants to wake up. She'd sleep through anything"

His eyes widened and he just smiled and shook his head. He carefully lifted her arm from his chest and rolled her over on her back, with a little protest on her behalf. As soon as she was settled on her back she made herself comfortable and fell back into a deep sleep.

Steve raced to the bathroom and I made my way downstairs to get the coffee going. A few minutes later he appeared into the kitchen his hair still dripping wet from his shower. I checked my watch I have been in the kitchen exactly 4 minutes and 27 seconds, how the hell does he shower so quickly. I mumbled to myself

"Huh army showers"

Of course he heard me and of course he would correct me

"Navy shower, Daniel Navy!"

I sighed and handed him his coffee we made our way out to the lanai and sat as the sun shone brightly in the clear blue sky. Sitting in the silence we drank the coffee, and behind us I could hear small tired footsteps, Grace made her way around my chair and fell into my lap. With a yawn and a stretch she lay back on my chest with her head on my shoulder.

"Good morning monkey."

"Morning Daddy, morning Uncle Steve"

"Morning Gracie"

She went silent and I thought she had fallen back asleep, just as I was about to say her name she said mine

"Danno, I know what I want to be when I grow up!"

Surprised by her words I cocked my head to the side and looked down at her

"What's that?"

"I had a dream last night that Uncle Steve was taken away again, only this time I was older and I was in Five 0 and I helped get the bad guys and bring him home"

I near dropped the coffee mug in shock, and Steve chocked on his last mouthful. Neither of us expecting her to say what she did

"You want to be a cop?"

She nodded

"I want to help people. I thought I wanted to be a nurse and help the sick but now I know I really want to be a cop to protect those I love and those who need protecting"

Those were the words I prayed I would never hear her say, that is not the life I wanted for my little girl. I felt dread go through my entire body.

"Your still young monkey, no need to make up your mind yet."

I said hoping desperately that next week she would tell me she wanted to be a vet or a dentist anything but a cop, last week she wanted to be an astronaut and yesterday it was a nurse. I looked over at Steve who was nodding in agreement

"You Know Grace being a cop isn't really the best job. You work all the time, have no time to spend with your family or friends and see a lot of bad things. "

I smiled knowing he felt the same. Trying to put her off the idea before she thought about it any further. Deciding I didn't like this topic I changed it

"So what are the plans for today?"

"I don't know, I'm not awake yet"

She said stifling another yawn, like me she wasn't a morning person.

"Well whatever it is it has to be fun and relaxing, it's my last day of recovery before I go back to work"

Steve said leaving the decision with Grace.

We went inside and got breakfast. Grace went to shower and think about what she wanted to do. Steve went to get his trunks so he could go for his swim and I made my way into the sofa to clear away the pillow and blankets. As I straightened out the sofa cushions I noticed something odd. Taking off all the cushions to investigate further realisation hit me

"Are you kidding me?"

Steve came back down the stairs, looking at the cushions piled up on the floor

"What?"

"I have slept here more nights than I can remember; crammed onto that sofa and you never thought to tell me that it was actually a sofa bed?"

He just looked at me

"I thought you liked to sleep on the sofa?"

"Yeah if the need arises, but had I known it could turn into a bed I would have happily slept in a bed"

He shrugged his shoulders and smiled

"How have you not noticed until now?"

"Until now I was always still half asleep when I fixed it up and put away the pillow and blanket"

He smiled

"Well now you know! Another Mc Garrett mystery solved"

"Now I know? Who in their right mind allows a guest to sleep on a cramped up sofa when it transforms into a perfectly big bed? Is it not common courtesy for a host to make their guests stay as comfortable as possible? I mean I'm not asking for a breakfast deal or anything … you are unbelievable! "

My hands flew into the air of their own accord and then rested on my hips.

"A guest is invited to stay … you practically live here!"

"Oh so that's a nice way of saying that I'm a part of the furniture now"

"Basically yeah, you stay here that often I should start charging you rent"

I narrowed my eyes daring him to say something else. He raised his hands in surrender, a wise move on his behalf.

"Okay, I'm sorry I should have told you. I feel terrible that you obviously have not had one good night's sleep on the sofa, that much is clear from your snoring"

"I don't snore"

He chuckled as he walked into the kitchen

"Yes my friend you do"

I was about to answer him back when I heard Grace

"You thinks he's loud you should hear mammy!"

I couldn't hold back the laugh that escaped my lips

"She's right … Rachel is unreal even had an operation on her nose and everything to try stop it"

Steve laughed

"An operation?"

I nodded; Grace went back to the living room and switched on the telly.

"Yeah, Stan paid for it. I didn't know she was getting it and when I saw her afterwards with her nose bandaged and under her eyes bruised I thought he had hit her, imagine my surprise when she told me the real reason"

Steve shook his head

"She can't be that bad!"

"You ever been in London?"

"Yes"

"Heard big ben chime?"

"Yes"

"Well imagined sleeping beside big ben chiming directly into your ear!"

He chuckled as he made his way towards the beach, his shoulders less tense than they have been these past few days and a light bounce in his step. I gave a quick nod of my head happy that he seemed more like himself. There was still an air of weariness about him but I guess that is what to be expected after an ordeal like his. Making a second cup of coffee I made my way in and spent the rest of the morning beside Grace and watching crap Sunday morning television, at some stage Steve came to join us.

It was noon before we made any attempt to do anything productive, Grace still hadn't decided what she wanted to do for the day and it was getting close to the time she needed to go back to her mother.

"Grace you made up your mind yet?"

She shrugged and looked up at me

"I think it would be nice for us to do something Uncle Steve wants to do"

She looked over at him to see his reaction, he smiled. I knew that smile and nipped in the bud before his idea had time to develop any further

"Yes Grace that would be nice, and will not involve bullets, shootings ranges or anything to do with work"

Steve huffed given me a look you would see on a teenage boy when he is told he is being grounded. Eventually he answered back

"You ever been fishing Grace?"

She shook her head, and from the look on her face I could tell that she didn't want to go fishing either, but none the less she smiled and said

"Fishing it is"

We gathered the equipment we needed, wrote a list of what we would need for the store and made our way to this 'perfect fishing spot' Steve had been to before.

A/N There we go folks another chapter. Danny witnessed one of Steve's nightmares and Grace effectively calmed him down … question is would you readers like more of this angst material?

Any comments both positive and negative are most welcome!
