12. When she looks at you in the eyes,
Don't look away until she does.
Lisanna looked up at the bright afternoon sky, feeling the nostalgia of the place.
She and Natsu were having a picnic on the hill that they built their little house on when they were kids. You know, the one they used when they were raising Happy. She closed her eyes and felt the cool breeze of the wind, enjoying the bright, beautiful afternoon. She was glad to finally have some alone time with Natsu, because most of the time, even if they did go out together, Happy was with them – not that she didn't like Happy, he was practically family after all. But sometimes she just wanted it to be just Natsu and her.
"What're you doing, Lisanna?" Natsu asked curiously, his mouth full of food.
Lisanna giggled at her boyfriend. "Nothing, I'm just remembering the old times…" Then she added, "And don't talk with your mouth full, it's not polite."
"You're such a mom, Lisanna…" The pinkette (yes, yes, I know he keeps insisting it's salmon but really people, you can clearly see that his hair is pink) commented, pouting a bit.
Lisanna laughed again, then looked back up to the sunny, cloud-filled sky. She then lay down on the picnic blanket, looking at all the shapes that the clouds made.
Natsu looked at her with curiosity. "Now what are you doing?" He asked yet again. "Why'd you suddenly lie down like that? Are you sick or something?" He asked, and when she looked for a moment, Natsu's eyes looked like they were worried for her.
She sighed, then said, "Come on, join me, I'm just looking at the clouds, I'm fine."
After swallowing his food, Natsu then lied down as well.
"Look, what do you see?" Lisanna said, pointing at a cloud. "It could be something else, but you know, personally, I think it looks like a bird, flying."
"No way!" Natsu exclaimed. "It definitely looks like Happy!"
Lisanna looked at the cloud again. "Yeah, from a different perspective, I can see why it'd look like-"
"No, no!" Natsu insisted. "It definitely looks like Happy! It can't look like anything else, there's no way!" He pouted, his eyes showing that he wouldn't give up on his statement.
Pity though, Lisanna didn't see that look in his eyes, and went on, "No, it could be all sorts of different shapes from other perspectives. Look, if you look from over here it kinda looks like a dog, in a way. And if you look from over there it could look like-"
"There ain't no way that's possible, Lis!" He argued. "It can only look like Happy to me! If I look at it from here, it's Happy, if I look at it from there, it still looks like Happy. There, there, and there, they all still will look like Happy! Hell, if I look at it backwards it'll still look like Happy!"
"Let me tell you what's impossible." The white-hair said. "What you justs aid is impossible, if you look at it from there, it just looks like a lopsided… I don't even know what that looks like!" It was Lisanna's turn to pout.
"Noooo!" Natsu still insisted, much like a small child. "It looks like Happy either way! It-"
Natsu suddenly stopped speaking, as another strong gust of wind blew and it scattered all the cloud pieces away, making them look like absolutely nothing at all. Or balls. No, literally, just circles floating in the air.
Seeing this as well, Lisanna smirked. "Well? Do you think this can still look like Happy now?" She asked. "Well?"
Natsu exclaimed, "Aww, Lisanna you're mean!" He said. "You're making fun of me! You're mean!"
Lisanna sighed and lightly hit Natsu. "Ow…"
She sighed again and turned to him. "Honestly Natsu, sometimes I can't believe you're the older one between the two of us, because sometimes I just feel like an adult assigned to babysit this annoying little brat" – The comment received a 'hey!' from Natsu, but Lisanna ignored it. "After all this time, you are still just that kid I raised an egg with."
"I'm not that naïve!" Natsu protested.
"Whatever you say~" Lisanna said, a bit song-like.
After that they both just kind of sat in this comfortable silence.
Then Lisanna thought back to the time they first built this house, and some of the conversations they had. One sentence that she herself had said haunted her. It filled her mind. That one sentence.
Ne, Natsu, when we grow up, can I be your wife?
Back then he thought it was a joke. But no, no, no, no. It was never a joke. Ever. She had just thrown out her emotions to his face out of the blue. But you know what, he didn't get it. He never got it. Even when she said they were like a family. He didn't see it. So of course, she said it was a joke.
What are you getting all flustered about? It was a joke!
"… Lisanna?" Natsu asked, and for some reason she didn't know at the moment, he looked worried. As if something terrible had just happened to her, and only he herself hadn't realized it. It was as if she was…
Crying.
But she never cried. She was never one to cry. She was always the one cheering people up. Smiling, laughing, giggling. She was all that. But she wasn't a person filled at sadness. So when she touched her wet face, the only thought that came to her mind was,
Who's tears are these?
"Why are you crying?" Natsu asked, his face still filled with worry. "Did something happen?"
Lisanna half-smiled. "You can't cry over spilled water." She commented – Natsu didn't know what she was talking about, though – she turned to him. "Ne, Natsu, when we grow up, can I be your wife?"
Natsu's eyes widened, and he had to look at her again to see if she was serious. He was sure he'd be greeted by the same smiling, teasing face as that time, and the same just kidding! words from her. But from a smile Lisanna's face turned dead serious. As if she were expecting him to say 'yes'. As if she was proposing to him or something. But-but that couldn't be.
At that moment, he wanted to look away. He really did. But he couldn't. It was as if his soul had been transfixed on Lisanna's beautiful blue eyes.
Then, Lisanna herself looked away, a disappointed look across her face. And what followed that was a clearly sad (though she really did try to hide it) "Just kidding…" She sighed. "What're you looking like that for? It's a joke, get it? For laughs."
There was something she was hiding from him surely. But at that point he didn't know what to say. So he followed his heart said the first thing that came to mind.
"Yes."
Lisanna looked at him with a rather confused look on her face. "What?"
"Yes." He said again, then added. "Well, to be more specific rather than answering your question… marry me?" He said it in a playful – almost jokingly – manner. Causing Lisanna to look away again.
"That's not funny." She said as she turned away from him.
"But I wasn't joking!" Natsu protested, sitting up. "Really, Lis, I wasn't!"
Lisanna, for a moment, became quiet. "No." She said. "If you weren't joking around, then… no."
What?
Natsu's jaw almost dropped at the shock. He had proposed to her. He had proposed to her (and this is Natsu we're talking about, it isn't exactly the most common thing he'd do) and she had said no?! A freaking no!?
Even Lisanna herself had been surprised with her own words. But they just came out. Because she new she couldn't accept… yet. Because something was missing. Because-
"Look Natsu, you just got me in a really bad mood okay? It's nothing against you, I promise." Lisanna sat upright. "And I don't want my proposal to be like that… I mean, I want it to be special. I want it to be a special memory. I want it to be something I can remember for the rest of my life. You think I want my proposal to be just us having a picnic and you just picked a fight with me? That's not how I remember it."
Then, she thought of an example.
"You know Lucy and Gray are engaged now?" – and at that moment, Natsu's jaw really dropped – "She told me, he proposed to her in the pouring rain, after she and he had confessed their hearts out. That's special. It doesn't have to be anything special or over the top" – though, she had to admit, that would have been nice – "But I want it to be a great memory… okay? It's nothing against you. Really."
Natsu blinked once. Then twice. Because Lisanna rejected his proposal, and he had just found out that Gray and Lucy were engaged? Oh he was really missing out on the world. No wonder they had been acting all lovey-dovey for days.
Then Lisanna got up. And Natsu just kept thinking the same thing.
"Look Natsu it really isn't anything about you, okay? So don't be sad."
Please.
She gave him a little kiss on the cheek.
Just don't.
"I'll see you tomorrow, yeah?"
Leave.
φ(・ω・` ) I am writing this for my future readers, because by the time you read this, it will have been the future for me. So by then I will have told you the following :
