Chapter Twelve
John woke with a start. The sudden awakening ignited pain throughout his body, but it was the sharp pain in his shoulder that made him groan. He lay still, afraid to move, and waited for the stabbing pain to subside. He held his breath as he prayed for relief.
Carson had been keeping a close eye and was aware the moment John woke. Though pain meds were being administered via intravenous feed, Carson had heard the groan and sharp intake of air and was ready with a pre-loaded syringe filled with a more concentrated dose of pain meds to help stave off the mounting pain he knew John was feeling.
John's eyes were shut tight, his lips tightly pressed together and jaw clenched. Carson clucked softly and quickly prepped the IV port and administered the drug-filled syringe. He smiled slightly when John's face relaxed and the breath he had been holding released.
"Thankyou"
The hoarse whisper made Carson pause as he studied the bedside monitor. "I'm sorry, Colonel...I mean "John"...I did not mean to wake ya."
John had already decided to trust the healer, besides, whatever the healer had done, he was blissfully unaware of the throbbing pain now, so that just had to be a good sign.
"You call me "kernel"...why?"
Aye, lad. I'm afraid that explanation will have ta wait until ya are more clear-headed for it to make sense. Besides, ina minute ya will be fast asleep due to the pain relief meds I just gave ya." Carson patted John's good shoulder. "Don't fret about that now...you're safe here, just get some more rest."
John was going to argue but knew it was useless. His head was getting fuzzy and he knew the healer was right. Drug-induced slumber was inevitable and he let himself relax.
Teyla approached the bed just as John drifted off. "How is he doing, Carson? He looks peaceful but his color is still pale."
"Aye. The lad has a ways to go. Hopefully Ankatal will come to his senses and realize what he has done is wrong and will help reverse what he has done to John and Rodney.
Down in the brig, Woolsey was attempting to reason with Ankatal. The man refused to listen to any reasoning and it didnt take long for Woolsey to realize his bartering skills were useless. He briefly contemplted letting Ronon deal with the belligerent man, but that would be a last resort.
As he left the brig in frustration, he tapped his earwig communicator and asked Lorne to assemble two squads ready to go off-World in fifteen minutes. He then hailed Teyla to do the same. He thought better not to include Rodney or Ronon in accompanying the mission at hand, deciding both lacked the patience to deal with ignorant people.
