In the early hours of the morning as the sun slowly crept into the room, Callie loved to just lay there next to Arizona, listening to the soft rise and fall of her breathing. She found herself just staring and smiling, she had never felt so much happiness and love for one person. Her soft pale skin glowing in the warm sun, Callie couldn't stop herself from softly tracing random patters up and down the blondes arm.

Feeling the touch of her girlfriends soft hands, Arizona smiled and pressed her back as close as she could to Callie`s front. She loved mornings like this. Waking up quietly with no alarms, feeling the warmth of her girlfriend's body against hers. It was perfect, a place she wished they could stay forever.

"Hey." Callie whispered, leaning over and pressing her lips to Arizona's temple. Taking a second to inhale the scent of her hair, strawberry, always strawberry. It was one of the things she loved about the blonde.

"Mmm Hey." Arizona said, slowly turning to face the brunette, pressing their lips together. "Morning." She said with a smile.

"Morning." Callie smiled back, stretching and wrapping her arms tighter around the blonde. Feeling her warmth, Callie could stay like this forever and never complain. Unfortunately both women had work, and a party to go to, so they would have to get out of bed eventually.

"Come on Callie, we have to get up." Arizona said, making no effort to move.

"Mmm Nooo…"

Arizona smiled, and placed a kiss on the brunette forehead, "Yes, come on I`ll make you coffee…"

"This is better than coffee." Callie said, wrapping her legs around Arizona's and pulling her impossibly closer, which made the blonde giggle. "Are you laughing at me?" Callie asked, as she stared into those baby blue eyes.

Trying to hold back another giggle, Arizona shook her head "No."

"It's not nice to laugh at people." Callie said, a big grin on her face.

Arizona was in trouble now and she knew it. "Callie, don't…" She tried as hard as she could to wriggle out of her girlfriends grip, but it was no use, Callie was much stronger. And before she knew it, Callie had them flipped over and has now sitting on top of her. The brunette was now the one laughing, Arizona's attempt to get away was not only funny, but adorable as well since there was no way she was letting the blonde go. "Callie…" she said, smiling at the knowledge of what was about to happen.

Leaning in for a quick kiss was enough to distract the blonde for a split second allowing Callie to being her tickle assault. The giggles and laughter that came from Arizona was one of Callie's favorite things in the whole world. And it made her laugh too, because Arizona giggles were so childlike and innocent, which was so unlike her girlfriend, if you really knew her.

Face now red, and having a slightly difficult time catching her breath, Arizona pleaded with the brunette, "Ca… Callie…" she tried to talk in between giggles but it was not working so well. So the blonde launched her own tickle war on Callie, who was in the perfect position. Getting enough leverage Arizona managed to flip their positions around, only she misjudged the space on the mattress and flipped them both off the bed and onto the floor.

"Ow..." Arizona said, holding her hand to the back of her head.

Callie, still mostly on top of Arizona, rolled off and sat up. "Well if you hadn't flung us of the edge of the bed…" She said, smiling and checking the blonde to make sure she was okay.

"So not my fault Callie…" Arizona laughed "You started it."

"And it was worth it." Callie said, standing up and pulling Arizona up off the floor. "Come on, you promised me coffee."

An hour later they walked hand in hand into the hospital and headed straight to their favorite coffee cart in the lobby. "Callie, I just made you some coffee. Do you really need more?"

"I know, but this coffee is sooooo good!" Callie said, paying for their drinks.

"Wait. Did you just say my coffee isn't good enough?" Arizona questioned, taking a sip of what she had to admit, was really good coffee.

"What? No. I…uh…no. Your coffee is"

Arizona cut her off "Callie I'm kidding." she said, smiling a little.

"Not funny…" Callie said, pressing the button for the elevator.

"Payback for this morning" Arizona said, leaning in to place a soft kiss on the brunette's cheek.

"Ohhh what happened this morning? Was it hot?" A familiar voice asked from behind the two women.

Arizona rolled her eyes as they all got into the elevator, "None of your business, Mark."

"Come on, you can tell me." Mark whispered into Callie's ear.

"Not gonna happen." Callie said as the doors opened on the pediatric floor. "Lunch?" she asked as the blonde stepped off the elevator.

"Of course." Arizona replied, leaning in for a quick kiss before the doors closed.

"You`re really not going to tell me?" Mark asked, as they made their way to the nurse's station.

"No, Mark. Sorry." Callie said, smiling as she gathered her charts for the day.

"Fine. Some friend you are. You know I`d tell you about…"

"No. Please, don't." Callie said, placing her had on his arm "Really, I don't want to know." She said with a smile. "I have patients to check on, see you later Mark."

"Right." He said as she walked off. Sometimes he still couldn't believe how happy his best friend was, and that it was all because of that blonde. After Erica, he didn't think Callie would ever smile again and he couldn't blame her. He hated that woman as much as she did. But then this bubbly blonde Peads doctor with wheels on her shoes shows up, and everything changed. Callie was happy and even though Mark still found Arizona annoying sometimes, he would always be grateful to her for what she did for Callie.

After rounding on all of her patients, Callie planned to take a coffee break on the Peads floor but just as she put the last chart away her pager went off.

*911 PIT*

It went off three times before she even got to an elevator.

"Crap." She said, running down the stairs so fast she nearly knocked over a nurse. "Sorry. Sorry" She yelled up at the startled woman.

Finally making it down to the pit she was slightly confused as everything seemed to be rather calm. "Uh… I got a 911?" She said to Dr. April Kepner, who was sitting behind the desk.

"Oh! Dr. Torres! Right... uh Dr. Hunt needs you in trauma 3 right away… It's pretty bad."

"Thanks." She said quickly, making her way to the trauma room. Pushing open the door all she could see was a mass of doctors and nurses and a lot of blood. "What have we got?!" Callie yelled to Hunt.

Looking up and sighing in relief that she was here, he filled her in. "16 year old female bungee jumper, rope snapped, multiple breaks and fractures, severe internal bleeding. We have to get her up to the OR."

Stepping forward to take a closer look at the patient, Callie was shocked. The girl had bones sticking out everywhere, right and left tibia and fibula fractures, probable hip dislocation, shattered left femur, both arms dislocated and crushed, and her face was pretty badly damaged as well. "Make sure OR 2 is ready for us, page Plastics and Peads and Shepherd." She said to one of the nurses in the room. "Let's take her up, it'll be ready by the time we get there."

Both Mark and Arizona rushed into the OR at the same time. They had been updated by the scrub nurse, and just needed a plan to get started. As they were all getting gowned and gloved they worked out their plan. Arizona and Hunt would work on the girls abdomen to try to get most of the bleeding to stop, while Callie works on stabilizing the girls bones while Mark and Derek work on the girls face and head to make sure her brain doesn't swell too much during the operation.

Four hours into the surgery and everything was going as planned. Derek had to alleviate some swelling on the brain about an hour in but since then everything has been okay.

"What's her name?" Arizona asked, looking up at Owen.

"What? Her name?" He was so concentrated on what he was doing he almost didn't hear her. "It's…Jamie. Yeah, Jamie."

Smiling under her surgical mask, "Jamie is one tough kid." Arizona said. Which made everyone smile.

"How are you doing Torres?" Hunt asked.

"Good, I've finished placing the pins in her legs and stabilized her hips. I have to figure out how to set her arms, because most of the bones were crushed, but if she stays stable it shouldn't take me long."

"Good. Sloan?"

"Still working on the facial reconstruction. It's pretty bad."

"Alright. We've got the bleeding under control for now and her brain has stopped swelling so…" A sudden noise interrupted Hunt, the monitor was shrieking, the girls sats were getting very low…

"O2 is down, 89 and dropping." Arizona said. "She's crashing! Get me the paddles, charge to 200!"

*Shock*

"Again"

*Shock*

"She's back!" Hunt said. "This surgery has put too much strain on her organs, we need to pack her and take her to ICU. If she's stable over night we can go back in tomorrow."

"Right. Okay." They all agreed. Minutes later the girl was packed and on her way up to the ICU.

Arizona leaned up against the sink in the scrub room, lost in her own thoughts as Callie finished scrubbing out.

"Do you want to get some food?" Callie asked, as she dried her hands, but she got no response. "Arizona?"

"Mmm what? Sorry."

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah. I'm fine… I just, that poor girl has gone through so much today and if we can't…"

"Don't. Don't think about that, we don't know what's going to happen. She's stable now, she still has a good chance."

"I know. I know. You`re right." She said, leaning her head on the brunettes shoulder. "Did you say something about food?"

Callie let out a small laugh, "Yes, I did." She smiled, taking Arizona's hand in hers as she led them toward the elevator. It had been nearly seven hours since the last time either of them eaten by the time they sat down with their food.

"Torres, Robbins…crazy day right?" Mark said, sitting down to join them.

"Mmhm" They said at the same time.

"…okay then…"He said giving both women a strange look.

"Sorry, it just has been a crazy day and we`re exhausted." Callie finally said. "This is the first…"

She was interrupted by the sound of all three of their pagers going off at once. "Crap. Jamie" She said staring at her pager.

Callie, Mark and Arizona raced up to the ICU.

"She's crashing!" A nurse shouted.

Mark pushed his way into the room "Get me a crash cart!" he shouted. "Charge to 200, Clear!"

Arizona checked the monitor. "No response."

"Again! Clear!" Mark announced.

"Still nothing." Arizona said, "Her O2 is nothing."

"Again! Clear."

"It's not working." Arizona said, sounding defeated.

"Come on Jamie, One more." He said. Shocking her two more times, still getting no response on the monitor.

"Mark." Callie tried to get his attention. "Sloan! It's not working, she's not coming back. "She said, grabbing his arm.

Arizona took a deep breath, "Time of death, 16:34"

Dropping the paddles, Mark stormed out of the room Callie close behind.

"Hey! Mark, what the hell?" Callie said once she caught up to him.

"Sorry. I just, that's why I hate Peads. She was just a kid… she..." He leans up against the wall and closing his eyes. "We saved her. She was fine….and now she's dead."

Reaching up and placing a comforting hand on his shoulder, "We did everything we could. You know that, and I know that." She said. "We gave her the best chance we could."

"She's right." A soft voice said from behind Callie. "That's all we can do. We try our best and give them a fighting chance, we can't control the rest." Arizona said taking Callie's hand and, leaning on the wall next to Mark.

"I don't know how you do it." He said, genuinely wondering.

Looking up at him, she smiled softly and said, "Most of them survive. Most of them get to go home and live normal lives. Children are resilient, they believe in magic. There's fairy dust in their IV bags, they smile and laugh and that makes them more resilient than adults. You do it for the joy, the happiness you see on a parents face when you tell them their child will be fine. This part? This is the worst part of Peads, but you deal with it and you move on and try to save the next one."

They stayed that way for a while, Callie and Arizona leaning on each other, enjoying the calm and each other's presence. While Mark was deep in thought, absorbing everything that happened that day and thought about how thankful he was for what he had. Tomorrow would be a new day, tomorrow they would see the joy and the sadness, and they would keep moving.
