Big thanks to Wolvesjr34 for letting me ping ideas off of you and helping me work through some things in this chapter! Anyway, Enjoy!
The time seemed to fly by. Already they had been home a week and things were moving at a rapid pace. She was trying to keep from having to take any more time off from work so Maura had decided to try to work and plan the wedding. Though, it wasn't working out all that well at the moment. Right now she barely felt like she had time for sleep. More than anything she was worried that it would compromise her work, and she hated the thought of that. But still, they didn't really want a wedding planner.
Even if they could get one to take on their wedding on such short notice, which Maura was certain they could for the right price, it was just one more person who could leak to the press their intentions to get married in Boston rather that here. It had only taken them a matter of hours to find a place where they could make a fake reservation here, and already the press had had a feeding frenzy with it. Well she should say that it only took Victoria a matter of hours to come up with what would have been a suitable place to hold the wedding. Apparently she already had the place picked out before Grace had broken the news to her that they were going to be married in the Boston area. The woman certainly wasn't happy about it, but she was at least trying to be civil because she knew that Grace wanted this. The area they had been looking at for the wedding ceremony in Boston didn't really have a place to hold a reception, so now it was up to her to try and find a place that would be suitable for about 100 people to attend a reception.
Suddenly and idea occurred to her. She knew of a place that could hold about that many people and she had said that she wanted to try and make some amends with the people who had been such a big part of her life. She knew that some wouldn't see it as the best place to hold the reception, but right now she didn't care all that much about them. This was her wedding and there was only really one person that she needed to run it by. Maura reached for the phone and scanned her contacts for the number.
The other end of the line rang three times before she heard what had become a distinct answer to her calls. "Hey babe," her fiancée's voice greeted her. "What's going on?"
"Well I was taking my lunch hour to try and come up with some place that we could use for the reception and I think that I have found a place to do it, but I wanted to run it by you. Do you have some time?"
"For you, babe, I've got all the time in the world."
Maura could hear the smile in her fiancée's voice and it made her smile in return. "So, I know that in the past I didn't speak too much of my time in Boston and I know I still haven't all that much since our return, but I do believe that I did tell you a couple of times about how there was this bar we all used to frequent?"
"Uh…" Grace stammered on the other end of the line trying to recall if they had ever had a conversation about a bar. "Hmm…" she mused. "I think there could have been a time that you mentioned it, but I don't recall a lot of detail about it. Why?"
"Well, it's called The Dirty Robber. I know it might not sound like the best place to have the reception, but owner is one of my old friends from when I used to work in Boston. I'm sure that he would let us rent the space out for the evening. Plus, I trust him and I know he wouldn't go leaking it to the press."
"Well babe, are you sure that's what you want to do? I mean you did just say that it's a place you used to frequent with your friends while you lived there, do you want to bring up the past like that?"
Maura sat still on her end of the line for a few moments. She hadn't really thought of it that way before. She would be bringing in a part of her past into her new life. Did she really want that? She audibly sighed on her end of the phone. "I really think I do," she admitted a little hesitantly. "I know that Boston was a place of hurt and heartache for me, but I don't want it to be anymore. I did a lot of things that I shouldn't have and one thing was to walk out on people who had always been there for me. Part of my want to get married in Boston was so that I could invite my friends and family. For a long time they were only family I had. They accepted me for who I was, and I will forever be grateful for that. So, yes… I would really like to have our reception in a place that has good pieces of my life there and be able to tie it to my new life and family."
It was Grace's turn to be silent now. She couldn't say that she was entirely thrilled with the idea of having the reception in a bar, but she knew that this was important to Maura. She was glad that she was finally getting to know her fiancée a little bit better. "Alright then," she said smiling into the phone, "if the place is up for the renting, let's do it."
"Thank you," Maura said relieved, but excitedly into the phone. "Okay, I will call here in a little bit. I'm not sure if Vince is there right now and I don't want to bother him at the station."
"Alright," Grace replied. "Sorry, I've got to go right now, babe. Can the rest of it wait until I can get to your place tonight?"
"Of course it can," Maura said quickly. "I'll see you tonight. We have to start looking at flowers and food next."
"Okay, looking forward to it. I'll see you later. Love you."
"Love you," Maura said just before she heard the little click in her ear that told her the line had been disconnected.
Maura turned in her chair so she could face her computer once again. She knew the number to get ahold of Vince at the station, but she really didn't want to bother him if that's where she was. She decided to look up the number directly to the Robber online. It only took a couple of minutes for her to find it in a search. She decided to go ahead and call. Even if Vince wasn't there whoever was working could probably tell her when he would be there next. She picked up her phone and dialed the number.
R&I
The place had been a madhouse today; all day. She had only intended to come in for a few moments to go over the delivery they had gotten in that morning. She had now been there ever since. She had finally had a chance to go over the delivery and was just putting some of the stuff out behind the bar when the phone rang. Normally she would let one of the servers get it because it was probably a to-go order, but they all seemed to be out at the tables at the moment.
"The Robber," Jane answered a little more forcefully than she had intended.
"Hello," a smooth voice said at the other end, "I was wondering if by chance Vince Korsak was available."
Jane paused. She recognized that voice, but the question was, why was she calling to the bar for Vince? "Maura?" she asked hesitantly.
"Jane?" she could hear the confusion in her ex-wife's voice. "What are you doing answering the phone at the Dirty Robber?"
Well this was just all she needed right now. She hadn't ever planned on telling Maura that she owned half of the bar. Not that she was necessarily trying to hide anything, but Maura had made it rather clear that she didn't care about the things Jane had been doing with her life since she had left. She realized now that she was taking too long to answer. "Uh, it was ringing and I was the closest person to it," was all she could come up with to say.
"Okay, if you say so," Maura said as though she kind of doubted that story, but had no proof where she could say otherwise. "Listen I need to talk to Vince about something and I was hoping that he was either there or he would be a little later on.
"I'm not sure if he's going to make it in today. I haven't spoken to him. You want me to give him a message for you?"
"I suppose you should just tell him that I want to speak to him. I have some future business I would like to speak to him about."
"Future business?" Jane asked curiously.
"Yes, I'd like to see about renting the bar out for an evening and I was wondering if he could tell me if something like that would be possible?"
"You?... You, want to rent the bar out for an evening?" Jane could hear Maura sigh slightly on the other end of the line. It was one of her I don't really want to talk about this in detail sighs.
"Yes, Jane. I want to speak to him about being able to rent out the Robber for a night. Grace and I would like to have our reception there and we wanted to know if there would be any problems about renting the bar out." Maura immediately closed her mouth. She hadn't meant to reveal that. She had slipped for a moment back into the times when she had been able to share everything with Jane. Some might think that she was doing this on purpose, but that really was not her intent. She didn't want to throw the fact that they had chosen to get married in Boston in Jane's face.
Jane felt the words hit her like a blow to the chest. They were getting married in Boston? That was certainly news to her. She didn't figure that Maura would want much else to do with this place after everything that had happened. "You're getting married here?" she couldn't help but ask.
"Jane," Maura said a little bit hesitantly. "I…"
"No, it's fine. I know Korsak wouldn't have a problem with you renting the space out. The other owner of the bar might have an objection to it though."
There was a moment of silence on the phone. Jane could hear the gears turning in Maura's head about the other owner of the bar. While Maura may have suspected something earlier when she asked why she had answered the phone, Jane knew that she hadn't processed everything fully. "The other owner," Maura drew out slowly. "As in…" she couldn't quite make herself say the words. For the most part it would still be a guess. She didn't have enough info to make the call.
"Yours truly," Jane replied.
R&I
In the next instant there was a click and a beep on the other end of the line. She had called a land line, so it wasn't like they could have accidentally been cut off; Jane had hung up the phone on her. Maura sat there for a couple of minutes processing everything that she had just heard. Jane owned half of the bar with Korsak. That answered a couple of the questions that she had had about some things, however, it didn't answer them all.
Maura picked up the phone from where she had laid it down when they had been disconnected. She looked at the recently dialed numbers in the list and then tapped on the number to get it to dial up again. She wanted a few more answers out of Jane.
The line rang in her ear three times before she heard the click of it being picked up. "Hello?" a sweet voice answered on the other end of the line.
"I need to speak to Jane Rizzoli please," Maura spoke. She was slightly annoyed that Jane hadn't picked up again, but she tried not to let that show in her voice.
"I'm sorry," the girl answered her straight away, "but she's not available right now."
"Oh, please," Maura said sarcastically. "She was just speaking to me two minutes ago and now suddenly she's not available."
"I'm sorry ma'am, can I take a message to pass along to her?"
A breath escaped Maura. It fell somewhere between a huff and a sigh. She couldn't believe that Jane was now refusing to speak to her. "No, don't bother giving her any kind of message. She already knows who it was that was trying to call her anyway, that's why she told you to tell me she was busy. Perhaps she'll be willing to speak with me at a time in the future.
"Okay?" The girl said a little bit confused. Perhaps she didn't know as much about the situation as Maura had figured she did, but then again maybe she was just trying to come up with something to say to what she had just said to her. "You have a nice day."
"Thank you," Maura replied tightly. She pulled her phone away from her ear before she could hear the click on the other end of the line telling her they had disconnected from each other.
Well, who would have thought that Jane Rizzoli would end up a business owner? And of a bar that they had frequented when they had been together, no less? It would seem that more things had changed in Boston than she had originally thought. Perhaps she had given things more time there.
Maura shook her head at that thought. She didn't want to think about that right now. She was building a life with a wonderful woman who adored her and who made her happy. They were going to have a happy life together and right now she had to focus on the wedding that she only had a few weeks left to plan.
Hmm, it appears as though Jane had has quite a bit more up her sleeve than we originally thought? She's become quite an entrepreneur in Maura's absence it seems. What do you think? You think this might change Maura's mind a little bit about her? Do you think she'll change her mind about wanting to have their reception at the Robber? Do you think she'll share the information she's learned with Grace? Come on, you know I want to hear it!
