Chapter 12
I still haven't forgiven Jane or Marcus for ruining my face and clothes the other day but I had to come back to work otherwise Aro would have to pay me a visit and not a friendly one… or maybe he'll just send some random guard to come kill me… Or maybe he'll feel we had a connection and do it himself…
I was pulled out of my thoughts of being killed by someone placing coffee in front of me, spilling almost half of it on my already done paperwork. I was just about to scream at the person for ruining my work when I saw it was Caius and his face looked awkwardly pulled in what I think must be a smile. When he saw I was looking at him he placed a box of rusks next to the coffee looking very pleased with himself.
"I thought you would like a break, I know how hard you work." Caius said, trying to smile again.
I looked at him with a slight frown, not knowing what was going on. I took a better look at the box of rusks and saw it expired like ten years ago and I couldn't help but think about what happened to that human that they couldn't even finish their rusks. The next thought was that Caius was trying to poison me and that explained why he was acting different. You would have thought he would be used too killing off his secretaries but maybe I'm different… Maybe I'm special.
"How is your day going, slav- I mean…" Caius stuttered and that's when I saw he pulled up a chair to sit next to me. I must have missed it with all these thoughts going through my mind. "The best secretary in the world…" He continued, not remembering my name but I didn't care because he was complementing me and it made my heart beat a little faster.
"Uh… it's fine, I guess," I said, not sure how to treat this different Caius.
I looked at him and for the first time I noticed how extremely handsome he was with his broad shoulder and well build frame. His eyes were like dark mysterious pools of blood that sent a chill through my body with excitement. I noticed then that he was also staring at me and it let my insides go crazy. Our eyes were gazing at each other and the connection started to get strong but something made him look away. I groaned silently to look up at what could possibly ruin this moment for me when I saw Alec just walking past us in his own world. Before I could even react to Caius standing up I saw him behind Alec, giving him a hard slap at the back of his head causing the poor guard to stumble to the ground.
"Don't be so rude, boy greet the secretary!" Caius said in his normal angry voice. I felt so touched that he would stand up for me like that but I couldn't help but feel sorry for Alec.
"I'm sorry, Master." Alec said, standing up and looking at me with an apologetic smile. "Hay Gianna, sorry for not greeting I was so caught up in my thoughts, working on this new poem of mine…"
"I don't care about your stupid poem, boy." Caius said, pushing him out of the room before I could even tell Alec that it was fine.
Caius shook his head, walking back to his chair and sitting down with his awkward smile again. There was an awkward silence and I couldn't even fill it by checking him out again because he was fidgeting with his hands and that made me nervous.
"So do you want to see some photos of me, Gianna?" Caius asked very pleased that he finally knew my name and it caused butterflies to flutter in my stomach.
"Sure, I'd love to," I said more eager than was necessary but he didn't notice as he pulled out a small album from his inside pocket.
I moved closer to get a better look as he opened it. The first photo was of him alone in front of his throne, he was just looking off in the distance in his normal cloak, acting like he didn't see the camera. The next one was of him again in the same clothes and pose but this time he stood in front of a bed that I figured was his own. The pictures were all of him in the same clothes and pose but just different location in the back. I would have thought it was all edited with Photoshop but I knew that no one in the castle even knew about Photoshop. So that made it more awkward and weird to think he did that pose intentionally in every photo.
"So what do you think?" Caius asked when we were finally done with his photo.
"It was…" I wasn't sure what to say.
"Great, right? Jane said that I was modelling potential and so photogenic." Caius said, flipping his hair to the side. I nodded with what I hoped was a convincing smile when suddenly I heard something that sounded like a whale dying and I could feel my cheeks burn of embarrassment when I realized that it was my stomach.
"You're pregnant? That is wonderful, I can even give you the first delivery for free. I'm quite an expert in delivering babies." Caius said with a real smile for the first time as he placed his hand on my stomach.
"Uh… I'm not pregnant, I'm just hungry." I said offended, pulling away from him and covering myself with my jacket.
"Ah, I know just the thing to help." Caius said, standing up and holding his hand out for me. I hesitantly took his hand and he pulled me up and out of the room. At first I didn't care where we went because I was so focused on his hand in mine and how amazing it felt.
I finally looked up at where we were when we stopped in front of that maid, Rosa. She looked at us in surprise and frowned at our linked hands.
"Slave, prepare Gianna a meal and bring it to us in my private gardens." Caius said and with that we were off again, through different halls and empty rooms.
His private garden was breathtakingly beautiful with everything perfectly trimmed and cut. Caius led me to the fountain and sat us down on the edge with a true smile on his face. His skin shown a slight glimmer as the sun touched his skin. He took both of my hand in his and looked into my eyes with intensity.
"I have a present for you," Caius said, taking off his one hand but still holding on to mine with his other.
Before I could even tell him it wasn't necessary he pulled out a stunning diamond necklace. It looked like it cost a fortune and it was perfect. I lifted up my hair to let him put it on. He moved closer and I could feel his hands caressing my skin as he placed it on, making every contact send electricity through my body. He pulled back making me miss his contact as he looked at the necklace dangling for my neck. It was really beautiful as it sparkled in the sun but not as beautiful as the man sitting in front of me.
"It's perfect, thank you, Caius." I said, looking at him through my eyelashes.
He took my hand again covering them with his hands as he leaned closer. I closed my eyes, knowing he was going to kiss me. That's when I felt his breath near my ear, giving me goose bumps.
"Happy birthday, Gianna," Caius whispered in my ear and just like that he pulled away to look at my expression.
"It's not my birthday…" I said, frowning as I looked in to his beautiful eyes. I could see his eyes change from confusion to anger as he stood up.
"I can't believe you let me waste my whole day on a filthy human!" Caius said, pushing me into the fountain.
I struggled to get air as I tried to get out from under the water. I broke the surface and took a deep breath, feeling my hair clung to my face as I saw the retreating figure of Caius walking away. Just like that I hated him again and there were no more butterflies. Rosa came then and held out her hand to me, not even hinting in her expression that this was weird at all. I took her hand and try to pull myself out but just caused her to fell in with me, landing with her whole weight on me and she wasn't light at all.
"Oh Grammy, are you okay?" Came a voice from not far and as I finally made it out from under Rosa I saw a guy not older than 25. He was tanned with brown hair and brown eyes. He helped Rosa out first and then helped me out.
"Thank you…" I said with a slight shiver as the cold hit my wet clothes and skin.
"Harold," He said, holding out his hand. I took it and with a quick shake I walked away, knowing it was that time again to go home and weigh my options down to consider never coming back and possibly dying for it.
