Short chapter (compared to the other one), but still juicy. Btw, there's also a little bit of swearing, but not a lot tho. Enjoy! And please review, it barely takes a minute :)

I knew my parents were archaeologists, but I didn't know their business trips were dangerous enough that they could die during one. But it probably wasn't exactly a "business" trip that time, the time they left me five freaking months at my neighbours' house.

They told me my parents died in some stupid car accident. I guess that was a lie. And now that I think of it, there weren't that many people at their funeral. And there weren't any scars or wounds on my parents' bodies. That probably wouldn't have been the case if they would've died in a real car accident. What a dumb child I was. I clearly remember the night when my life changed…

I was being babysat at my neighbours' house, when I was six. They had one kid, and he was one of my only friends during those days. We were together all the time, and I was always happy when my parents brought me to his house. His name was Skyler. I was babysat by his mom most of the time when my parents were leaving on business trips, like that occasion. But they usually brought me with them, and it wasn't the case this time.

That day was one of those stormy nights. Skyler and I were playing with his Hot Wheels. I was carefree; I didn't know anything about where were my parents. They left me at my neighbours' house one day, and then I didn't see them again for a very long time (but the next time I did see them, they were dead). It was the first time they left me at my neighbours' house for so long. Every time I asked Skyler's mother where my parents were, she always gave me the same answer:

"Don't worry, they're alright, they will come back soon for you."

Then, eventually, there was a knock on the door. Skyler's mother went to see who it was, while he and I were still playing with his toys. I heard some voices, Skyler's mom's and a man's. They weren't talking loud, almost whispering, so I couldn't understand what they were saying. A few minutes later, they entered Skyler's room, where we were playing. A tall slim bald guy was standing next to Skyler's mom, whose eyes were red. He slowly approached me, a pained look on his face. He then said a sentence that no little six-year old boy should ever hear in their life:

"Krypter, kiddo, I'm sorry to tell you that both your parents died last night."

I didn't understand at first. But then the truth slowly crept its way into my brain. I would never see my dad's smile again. He won't be able to bike with me anymore. I wouldn't be able to eat my mother's delicious cupcakes anymore, or hear her soft laugh that I always loved. All of that because they were dead.

Then I cried. I cried my balls out for hours. Skyler's family and himself tried to comfort me, but it was useless. It wasn't like they could bring my parents back to life. They couldn't change anything.

The man left after a while, he told us when the funerals were and where. He didn't give a lot of details about my parents' death. He just said that they were injured in a car accident, and that they then died in their hospital bed because the damages were too bad. He didn't say when the accident happened, or who they crashed into. That remained a mystery for years.

The funerals were a few days later. There were probably around twenty people there, which wasn't a lot considering it was both my parents that died. Some family members and friends. None of them talked about how my parents died, they just spoke of the sweet memories they had with them. My mom and dad got buried in one coffin, holding hands, eyes closed and a playful smile fixed to their faces forever. I was the last one standing in front of their cobalt stone, staring at it with a blank gaze. That's the thing about pain; it hits you all at once at first, and it hurts like hell, but then you don't feel anything; you just feel numb and empty. Like the world didn't matter anymore, nothing did.

The day after the funerals I went to my old house to pick up my stuff and say it good bye, because the next day the movers were going to take all the furniture away. Where to, I didn't know. I didn't have a lot of family in the city I grew up in, they mostly all stayed in California, while my parents lived in Maine. So, after the funerals, I stayed with Skyler and his wonderful family. They all treated me like I was part of their group, and I always tried to believe that I was, but there was always a little voice in my head that was saying the opposite. My family was dead. I didn't belong with them, I was an intruder.

I lived with them for three years, but then things got complicated. Skyler's parents got divorced, and I was caught in the middle. Skyler's dad moved to Toronto in Canada while Skyler's mom went to live in Mexico. Skyler decided to live with his dad. Skyler's parents said that they couldn't take care of me anymore because of money issues and I understood that. The saddest part was that I had to leave my best friend. The farewell was painful, and I hoped not to live through something like that ever again. After they signed the papers concluding the divorce, I went to live with my aunt that was staying in Manchester, in the United States. She paid for the trip, and she came to pick me up at my neighbours' house. The last time I saw her was at the funerals, but before that I never saw her in my life. I went to live with her because she was the closest relative living near Maine.

Aunt Emma was a nice woman, I guess. She wasn't mean or anything, it's just that she didn't really care about me. Good thing she was rich, VERY rich. Her house was a freaking castle! I could ask her anything, and she always said yes. The only rule in her house was this: Do not disturb Aunt Emma. As long as I didn't disrupt her, I could do whatever I wanted. Let's just say she was really caught up in her work; she owned a popular clothing brand. So she was always busy. But fortunately, I made some friends pretty quick in that city. They helped me forget about what happened to my parents, and Manchester felt like home not too long after I moved.

I've been living there since then. Aunt Emma is the one that bought me this trip to Vivosaur Island. I don't know if she knows the truth about my parents, I'm wondering if someone in my family knows, or even if Skyler's parents knew. But I'm asking her when I get home, that's for sure. Or should I keep it a secret…?

If you'd keep it as a secret, you and your parents would at least share something… says a little voice in my head. I decide not to tell anyone about what really happened to my parents. It'll be my little secret.

I totally forgot about the article that I found online. I open my eyes and look down at the screen. My gaze lands on the picture where they found the dead corpses. It's just some random forest. But then I notice something in the corner. It's a big dark figure that's a bluish color. It's concealed by the trees, so I can't really tell what it is. I also see that there are some weird forms covering whatever that thing is.

I scroll down to see if whoever wrote the article also put the geographic coordinates situating the damned island. And… No, he didn't. But I found something else instead. At the very bottom of the page, there's a sentence that catches my eye.

"This article has been removed from the following site .com the 7/26/06"

What…?

But that doesn't make sense! Because the article is right in front of me! So did whoever wrote the paragraph removed it right after he posted it? That'd be stupid and useless! I give a final quick glance at my parents' pictures and the image of the forest and mysterious shape before exiting the site and going back on Google. I type: bones history museum in the search bar. I click on the museum's website with the mouse and start looking for the article. I go in the articles category and start searching for the piece of writing about my parents' death. After a few minutes of looking though every single article, my research is futile. I can't find the proof of how my parents passed away! How is that possible? It was there a few minutes ago…

What the hell, this doesn't make any sense… I think while staring at the computer screen.

An explanation slowly starts to form in my mind. Maybe the murderer that killed the squad that went to the island, including my parents, hacked the website and found a way to retrieve the article. Then he managed to put it back on the site for a few minutes, at the exact time I was on it, so I could read the article and absorb what it said. That's crazy; I don't think anyone is able to do that…

Are you sure? says that voice in my head that I hate so much.

No actually, I'm not sure. It's probably possible for someone to do that. The question is: is it really the murderer that did it? How do I now he's still alive? Maybe it's someone else that knows the truth and that has a twisted mind. And the island, does it still exist? I bet I could learn a lot more about my parents' death if I went to the museum where they're showing the gun. I look through the website a little before finding the address. I write it down on a piece of paper before putting it in my pocket. The museum is in Europe, precisely in Spain. I'll have to go on vacation there one day.

I visit other sites, hoping to find out more about the island or the event. But I don't find anything, it's like the isle didn't even exist, which I hope is not the case. I need to find the island to discover what exactly happened to my parents. After a while I shut the computer off and close my eyes while leaning back in the chair, deep in thoughts.

Diggins finally finishes building the gun a few minutes later.

"There, I think I'm done," says the professor.

I get off the chair and go admire the result: it's a small pistol almost entirely made out of rida. There's a bunch of little buttons on the weapon, there's no hand guard and the handle is in gold (that's our theory). Even if Diggins is the one that built it he has no idea what is going to happen if we pull off the trigger.

"We could do a test!" I excitedly say, all thoughts about my parents disappearing. "We could shoot on something and see what happens! Rosie, is there a target around here?"

"Yes!"

She runs towards a box and takes something out of it. A bow and arrow target. She gives it to me.

"Don't ask me what that's doing here! Put it in a corner and shoot at it!"

I put the round wooden panel on a wall. Diggins gives me the pistol and says:

"Press gently on the trigger. Something should happen."

He then backs up. I concentrate and try to aim well at the target. It's the first time I have ever held a gun in my hands, so I'm kinda nervous about it. I fire at the circle-shaped board...

A huge red ray emerges from the canon and touches the target, disintegrating it into ashes. I stare at the weapon, amazed. There's a burning smell in the air. Doctor Diggins slowly approaches what's left of the target and takes a handful of ashes in his hand, but then he starts shaking it and blowing on his hand.

"Hot! Hot! (He calms himself before continuing.) Well, apparently that gun has a burning ray instead of bullets. And I bet that it could get through any metal objects, or any other kind of material! I think that is going to be very useful to us someday! Oh, well look at the time; it's starting to get late! Krypter, you can keep the rida gun if you want. I'm going back to the fossil center. See ya!"

He puts the dangerous weapon in my hands before exiting the lab. Rosie runs towards me and says:

"That was so cool! I'm so jealous that you're the one keeping it! Nan, I'm kidding. I'm going to see grandpa to give him his keys back and then I'm going to eat a little snack before going to bed. Let's get outta here; I'm going to lock the doors."

We exit the secret lab and go back in the lobby.

"I'm anxious for our next adventure together Krypter!" says Rosie after she locked the last door. "I gotta go, bye!"

She heads towards the elevator leading to her grandfather's office. I get out of the building and walk towards the hotel. The night is finally here and the sky is illuminated by shining stars. I admire them for a while before entering the hotel.

When I arrive inside I eat at a small restaurant located in the building. Then I head towards my room. When I get there I get the gun out of my pocket and put it on the shelf next to the T-Rex key. "What a day!" accompanied by an image of my two parents smiling is my last thought before drifting off to sleep...

No, another thought prevents me to fall asleep. How did the gun work? The other scientists that found the first one weren't able to found out what it did, so how did it work so easily for us? Maybe ours was different in some way, or the one that the crew found was deactivated or something, maybe it was part of the murderer's plan for them to find it...

Man, this is too confusing, I'll just go to sleep now...
