This is the final chapter, I hope you have all enjoyed reading :)
...
By the time Saturday rolled around (the day of the party) Ron had still had no luck finding a job.
"There is hardly any going at the moment," he complained. "And what few ones there are either have rubbish pay or need lots of qualifications."
"I'm sure you will find something eventually," Hermione told him.
They arrived at the Burrow to find Mrs Weasley had set up a table full of food and drink in the garden.
"I thought we would just have a buffet rather than a sit down meal," she told them. "Since it's such a nice evening I thought we could sit outside. Now how's my little granddaughter?"
She took Magnolia from Ron and planted a kiss on her nose.
Hermione led her parents out to the garden where Harry and Ginny were sitting with Charlie and Percy.
They all said their greetings then Ron asked his two older brothers about jobs.
"Sorry," Charlie shook his head. "The only jobs we have at the moment are abroad and you don't want that do you?"
Ron shook his head.
"It's not fair to use family influence to get you a job Ron," Percy sniffed.
"Percy!" Ron snapped. "It's for Maggie. Your niece."
"Well I-" Percy looked uncomfortable. "I can ask around see if anyone knows of anything."
"Thank you Percy," Hermione smiled.
"You could always come and work with us in the surgery," Mr Granger suggested. "As a last resort."
"Thanks," Ron muttered.
"It wouldn't really work," Hermione said. "Ron doesn't know the first thing about muggles."
"Maybe Fred and George could give you work in the shop?" Ginny piped up.
"Did we hear our names?" Fred asked, strolling out of the house towards them with George following behind.
"Yeah," Ron said eagerly. "I'm trying to find a job and I was thinking -"
"Stop right there little brother," George said. "If you are going to ask to work in the shop then forget it."
"But-"
"We already have an assistant," Fred continued. "We have no need for any other workers."
"But I'm family!" Ron fumed.
"Why don't you ask your dad?" Hermione asked gently.
"Yeah, there's no point in asking Bill, his work is too complicated for me," Ron said. He stood up and made his way into the house.
His seat was taken by Fleur who was holding a drooling Magnolia.
"I hear Ron hasn't had any luck yet," said Bill who had followed Fleur out.
"He's only been searching for a week though," Hermione said.
"Yeah a job isn't just going to fall in to his hands," Bill agreed. "I'm sure he will find something eventually. How about you Harry?" he asked.
Hermione turned to Fleur who was still holding Maggie. She began bouncing her up and down on her knees.
"Oh careful," Hermione warned her. "She had her milk not that long ago."
The warning was too late however as Maggie brought up some of her milk.
"Yuck! Get her away from me," Fleur said in disgust.
A snorting Ginny picked up Maggie and sat down on the grass beside Harry.
Mrs Weasley came bustling out of the house.
"We are just waiting for Hagrid to arrive now," she said. "Then we can begin eating."
"Hagrid's coming?" Hermione asked brightly.
"Yes dear didn't I tell you? It must have slipped my mind," Mrs Weasley said before turning to speak to Mr and Mrs Granger.
A few minutes later Hagrid let himself in through the side gate.
"Where is she?" he beamed. He strode over to Hermione and engulfed her in a hug that lasted several minutes. "I was so happy when I found out it was a girl. So proud of you and Ron," he babbled on and on.
Once Hermione was free of his suffocating grip she took Magnolia from Ginny and handed her to Hagrid who could hold her easily in the one hand.
"She is a beauty," Hagrid said proudly.
He planted a wet, scratchy kiss on Magnolia's head who giggled up at him.
"Well now that everyone is here I would like to propose a toast," Mrs Weasley said.
Once Mr Weasley and Ron had joined them and everyone had a drink in their hand Mrs Weasley continued.
"First of all I would like to welcome Magnolia to the family. I know she has been in our family now for almost two months but with Ron being at school we have not really had time to welcome her properly."
Everyone raised their glasses to Maggie.
"Secondly I would like to congratulate Ron and Harry on finishing their final year at Hogwarts."
Everyones glasses were raised for a second time.
"Now please dig in to the food," Mrs Weasley smiled.
The rest of the evening past in a blur with plenty of food and drink, talk and laughter. Magnolia was treated like the parcel in pass the parcel with everyone wanting a shot of holding her. Hermione and Ron were forced to leave early in order to get Maggie to her bed but urged everyone else including Hermione's parents to stay on and enjoy themselves without them.
"All part of parenthood," Ron grumbled. "No social life, having to leave everything early, seeing friends less and less…"
"All worthy sacrifices," Hermione reminded him.
"Absolutely," Ron agreed half heartedly.
…
Another few weeks went by and Ron was still no closer to finding a job. His father and Percy had not had any luck in finding something in the ministry for him either.
"Go to the ministry personally," Hermione suggested. "It's better than you sitting around here all day feeling sorry for yourself."
"I'm not feeling sorry for myself," Ron replied. "It's just. I want to be able to provide for my daughter and not have to rely on our parents. It's starting to get cramped in this house with all of us here and I want Maggie to have memories of the family home that she grew up in and not the days where we lived with her grandparents."
"I know Ron," Hermione sighed. "As much as I love spending all this time with my parents I feel cramped. I want to be independent and be our own family, just the three of us. I do appreciate everything they've done for us though and your parents. We'd never have coped without their support."
The two were sitting in Hermione's room. As they sat talking there came a tapping at the window. Ron opened the window and a Brown Owl flew into the room.
"Ron I think it's your results!" Hermione said suddenly. "The envelope has the Hogwarts crest on it."
Ron turned pale. He undid the letter with shaking hands from the owls leg and sat back down on the bed.
"Well?" Hermione asked as he opened the envelope and read the letter.
"I passed them all," Ron said in disbelief.
"Oh Ron!" Hermione threw her arms around him. "I knew you could do it."
Ron smiled. "Maybe now it will be easier to find a job," he said. "You know I think I will go down to the ministry."
He stood up, turned on the spot and disapparated.
…
After what felt like hours later to Hermione he burst into the kitchen where Hermione was feeding Magnolia with a triumphant look on his face.
"I got a job!" he exclaimed.
"Ron that's wonderful!" Hermione said.
"I now work for The Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes," Ron said proudly. "As an Obliviator. Old Arnold Peasegood retired. They hadn't managed to find a replacement but needed one desperately. Lucky I was there really. Told them I'd start tomorrow and they nearly kissed me! You hear that Maggie?" Ron leaned down to his daughter. "Daddy's got a job!"
From the moment that Ron started in his job Hermione began focusing on finding them a house. They had both agreed that they would like to bring their daughter up in a wizarding village but it was just the task of deciding which one and finding a suitable house.
"I heard about a cottage up for sale in Upper Flagley," Ron announced one Friday evening as he returned from work. "The old witch fortunately passed away last week and the daughter is looking to sell it."
"Ronald!" Hermione scolded.
"Not fortunate that she's dead," Ron defended himself. "Just that she left a house behind."
Hermione shook her head. "You're so compassionate Ron," she smiled.
She hurried off to send an owl to the deceased owners daughter leaving Ron to wolf down his dinner.
…
They received a reply the next morning inviting them to view the house that afternoon.
"I'll ask my parents if they could look after Maggie," Hermione suggested.
"Are you crazy?" Ron asked. "She's an asset! Last week at the bakers I got extra doughnuts because I let the woman hold the baby. If we take her along she might be able to knock some galleons off of the asking price of the house"
Hermione laughed despite herself.
…
"Oh Ron it's beautiful," Hermione breathed.
They stood staring at the picturesque cottage located at the very edge of the village. Mountains were visible in the distance with the boundaries of a forest reaching up to the small back garden. The cottage was separated from the rest of the village by a small river with a small stone bridge crossing providing access to the house.
"This would be the perfect place for Maggie to grow up! During the summer she can sit by the river and read," Hermione said excitedly.
"Or she could do something exciting like flying through the woods," Ron butted in.
Hermione was about to respond when the door to the cottage opened and a small, rounded, rosy cheeked witch came out towards them.
"Hello, hello!" she beamed. "Who is this little darling?"
She promptly lifted Magnolia out of Hermione's arms.
"Um this is Magnolia, I'm Hermione and that's Ron," Hermione told her. "We were so sorry to hear about your mother."
She elbowed Ron in the ribs.
"Yes, very sorry," Ron added, rubbing his side.
"Yes well, she was very old," the woman replied sadly.
"Come in, come in, let me show you around the place!" she led them into the cottage.
After a complete tour of the small two bedroomed cottage she turned and asked them: "When would you like to move in?"
Taken aback at her abruptness Hermione looked to Ron.
"Well you see the thing is," Ron began. "I've only just finished school and while I have now got a job we don't have a great deal of savings. Hermione here left school early to look after Magnolia." He nodded to the baby still securely in the witch's arms. "We wondered whether there was any chance of you reducing the price at all?"
"We absolutely love the house!" Hermione exclaimed. "It's the perfect family home but…"
The witch looked from the pairs pleading faces to the sleeping one of Maggies.
"The perfect home for the perfect family," she said. "My mother would be happy to see it go to such nice, loving people. You can pay me whatever you can afford to in installments."
"Oh thank you!" Hermione shrieked, she threw her arms around the witch, careful not to disturb her sleeping daughter.
"This is where I grew up," the witch told them, beaming at the joy in their faces. "It will be a great place to raise your daughter."
…
It was Christmas time later that same year. The village of Upper Flagley had been buried underneath a pile of snow. The fire was blazing in the living room casting a warm glow. Hermione and Ron were entwined on the couch as Maggie crawled around the floor chasing the bubbles Ron was producing from his wand.
"Oh Ron this has been the most perfect Christmas ever," Hermione gushed. "We have our own home, a beautiful daughter, you have a stable job, supportive families."
"Don't forget each other," Ron reminded her with a peck on the cheek.
"Of course not," Hermione whispered.
They sat in companionable silence until Hermione spoke again.
"I just think we've been so lucky," she said. "This time last year I felt like it was the end of the world. I thought we had ruined our lives but in reality our lives were only just beginning. It just goes to show that no matter what life throws at us there is always a way to get through it. Together."
"Together," Ron agreed.
…
