12. In Which Expectations Aren't Met

Bella's Point of View

After it's done, once the condom's been disposed of, Brady spoons up behind her and for a while, they're silent. Bella stares at empty space and tries to make sense of her emotions, but it's such a discombobulation of contrasting feelings, all she can really make sense of is that she's so very confused.

Sex, she thought, wasn't supposed to be like that. It was awkward and uncomfortable and over before it really began. She feels abraded and uncomfortable and so very exposed and honestly, she isn't sure if she wants to do that again.

And so she cries and really, she isn't the only one.

Brady rocks her as best he could, croons nameless melodies in her ear and all the while, there are silent tears streaming down his handsome face and afterwards, when she's cried herself out and when the only sound is their breathing once more, Bella thinks that brings them far more closer than the sex itself had.

"So," Brady begins, "That was… awkward."

Bella nods, face burrowed in the place where his neck meets his shoulder. His fingers cart through her long hair and her breath is hot against his skin.

"When you want to try again - if you want to, I mean - I think it gets better. From what I've seen in the pack mind, anyway."

Bella sighs. The elusive 'pack mind'. She wonders what that's like - no secrets between brothers - and wonders more so how she can look at the other wolves, knowing now that they'll see that sooner or later.

"Give me time," she sighs. She doesn't know how to tell him that experience was just terrible and she really doesn't want to feel so raw again. He understands anyway.

"All the time you need," he murmurs, presses a kiss to her crown and begins to hum her to sleep. She closes her eyes, falls into the abyss and thinks they'll be okay.

Just as she falls, she murmurs the words she knows Brady always loves to hear. "I love you."
