I arrived back in San Diego at a completely absurd time in the morning. It was no surprise to me that everyone was still asleep when I arrived at my house. I was exhausted. I crept through the dark living room and made my way into the kitchen. My stomach wasn't interested in my exhaustion. It insisted I eat something. I opened the fridge to get out the milk for a bowl of cereal. Instead of milk, my hands grabbed a package of bacon. Bacon it is, I smiled.
I could hear the bacon sizzle from the stove as I put on a fresh pot of coffee. I decided to make Selena breakfast. She was starting her first day of teaching at the school and I wanted it to be a good one. Taking care of her came naturally to me and once I popped the question, I was sure I'd be doing it for the rest of my life. I wasn't surprised when she shuffled into the kitchen still half asleep and stretching. She shuffled over to the coffee and poured a mug as she yawned.
"Do I smell bacon?" She rasped as I came up behind her and slid my arms across her waist. I let my palms rest on her stomach.
"Yes." I said softly into her ear before I kissed her neck softly.
"Mmm. That's nice." She sighed. "I missed you last night."
I continued to trail kisses down her neck. "I missed you too."
She turned around and wrapped her arms around my neck. I leaned in and kissed her softly. I smiled against her lips when I realized she had already brushed her teeth. I lifted her up and sat her on the counter. I kissed her again. She lightly pulled on my bottom lip with her teeth. She ran her fingers down my back and let her hands rest on my hips.
"Get a room." Joe grumbled as he walked into the kitchen. We ignored him. "The bacon is burning." He added.
"Shit." Selena mumbled against my lips. "Baby don't burn the bacon." She smiled as we pulled apart.
I turned off the burner and removed the skillet from the stove. "It will be a crispy batch." I said before putting it onto a plate.
I set the table and made Selena a plate of food.
"Thank you baby." She said sweetly.
"Got any big plans today?" Joe smirked as he stabbed his eggs with a fork.
I narrowed my eyes at him. "No. Why?" I asked sounding casual.
"Oh. No reason." He said with a shrug.
Selena was looking at us both like we were crazy. "How was the LA trip?" She asked me in between bites of her breakfast.
"Yeah Demi." Joe smiled. "How was your LA trip?"
"Am I missing something?" Selena asked still confused.
"No." I laughed. "Joe's just a douche. My trip was good. I got exactly what I needed." I smiled.
"That's good." She said as she continued to eat. "What exactly did you need?" She asked.
I immediately shoved an excessively large bite of food into my mouth in an effort to stall. I needed a minute. Joe started laughing at me and Selena raised an eyebrow as she ran her tongue across her teeth.
"I'm just giving her shit Sel." Joe said as his laughter died down. "She was picking up some sample microbrews from a prospective client."
"Why didn't you just say so." Selena chuckled as she stood and took her plate to the sink. "I've gotta get ready." She said kissing my forehead and disappearing down the hallway.
"You're an ass!" I said throwing my napkin at him.
"How did it go with Brian?" He grinned.
"Fine." I grumbled still irritated with his lack of tact.
"Oh come on." He chuckled. "Don't be a baby."
"I guarantee you, she's in there checking my phone and digging through my drawers looking for some kind of evidence I'm up to no good." I said crossing my arms.
"Sel trusts you." He said rolling his eyes. "When are you gonna ask her?" He asked with a lopsided grin.
"I really hate you." I said trying not to smile. "Tonight."
"I'm so fucking excited." He said nearly leaping out of his chair.
He walked over to me and gave me what can only be described as the most awkward hug I've ever received. It was unexpected and I wasn't prepared for it. I sat there holding my fork while he bent down and basically crushed me.
"You're a crappy hugger." I laughed.
"You're crappy to hug." He shot back.
"Whatever." I said letting out an exaggerated sigh.
"Let me know how it goes." He said as he walked away.
I finished my breakfast which was basically cold, and slid my hand into my pocket. I sighed when I felt the small velvet box. I couldn't believe I was actually going to do this. Now I just had to figure how. My eyes drifted to the custom guitar she bought me that was sitting in the corner of the dinning room. It suddenly occurred to me what I had to do.
"You wanna drive me to work?" Selena asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.
"Of course." I smiled.
Selena rambled on endlessly as I drove her to the school. I'd nod a smile every once in a while so she knew I was listening. I could tell she was nervous and excited.
"Baby." She said, once again snapping me out of my thoughts. "You seem distant. Are you ok?" Her forehead had creases of worry etched into its surface.
"I'm good. I promise." I said gabbing her hand and lacing out fingers together. "In excited for you. That's all." I smiled.
"Yeah?" She asked shyly.
"Yeah." I breathed as I paid attention to the road.
I dropped her off and headed back home. I had work to do. She would always remember the moment I proposed and I wanted it to be perfect.
I pulled up to the house and practically sprinted inside. I grabbed my guitar and went outside to sit out on the back deck. This would be the most important song I ever wrote. It had to be perfect. I got comfortable and started to play. How heard me and came outside to listen.
"I like that." He said as I wrote down the chords in my lyric book. "It sounds magical." He grinned.
"It is fucking magical." I said trying to keep a straight face.
"Is it for Sel?" He asked.
"Yeah." I answered wistfully.
"Lemme see." He said before snatching my notebook.
I watched him with an amused expression my face. I could tell he was impressed as he read the lyrics.
"These are really good Dem." He complimented.
"Thank you." I smiled proudly. "Can you do me favor?"
"Yeah. What's up?"
"I need you to pick Sel up from work and then bring her to the bar tonight."
"The bar is closed..." He said as his forehead scrunched up. "Oh. Never mind. I got it." He smiled. "I'll take care of it."
"Thank you." I said before taking my notebook and heading back inside.
I grabbed a change of clothes and headed to the bar to get ready for tonight.
It took me several hours to get it set up. Each candle was placed precisely. I lit each one then took a quick shower. I wanted to be presentable when Selena arrived. I finished getting ready and waited for Joe's text.
"The foods almost ready." Taylor informed me as she peeked out of the kitchen. She sounded slightly out of breath. "Oh damn!" She exclaimed. "You look good."
"Thanks Tay."
I felt my phone vibrate. I checked the screen and took a deep breath. They had just pulled up. I smiled as I saw Selena walk through the door. Joe, being the gentleman he was, escorted her in. She had the most beautiful smile I'd ever seen.
"Oh my gosh." She breathed as she looked at the candle lit room. "Demi..."
I took her hand and led her to the table. I pulled out her seat and she sat down. "You look beautiful." I said leaning down to whisper in her ear.
"What is all this?" She asked.
"Dinner." I smiled as I sat.
She laughed and reached for my hand. "I love you. So much."
"I love you too Lena." I said softly.
Taylor served dinner and we spent the entire time talking and laughing. We reminisced about when we were younger and talked about what hoped to achieve in the future.
"Come with me." I said standing up. I led her to a stool that was set up in front of the stage. "Sit."
"Demi...my hearts racing."
"Mine too." I picked up the guitar and started to play. "This is for you." I said as I made eye contact.
She chewed her bottom lip as I started to sing.
"I'd like to share this thought with you. Our loves a joy. Two ones have made an inseparable two. Last night my heart spoke to me. It said you've found that lover. So now I've finally got the courage to ask you baby." I sang as she sat on the stool directly in front of me. Her smile made my knees weak.
"Will you, will you? Will you marry marry me girl? Will you, will you? Will you marry me?"
Her hands immediately covered her mouth and her eyes glimmered with the tears that were about to fall.
I continued to sing. "I lay awake so full with hope of things to come. For heaven's sake, I pray I'm not the only one. I never dreamed I'd be so bold. I'm standing here. My hearts been sold. So now I've finally got the courage just to ask you baby."
"Will you, will you? Will you marry marry me girl? Will you, will you? Will you marry me?"
I stopped playing and sat the guitar down. I took her hand and she stood. She seemed to be in shock as tears of joy slipped down her face. As soon as she was standing, I got down on one knee and took a deep breath. I was so nervous.
"I know I'm not Prince Charming." I smiled as I pulled out the ring. "I know that..."
"Yes." She interrupted.
"I didn't finish." I said as I swallowed the lump in my throat. "I had this entire speech..."
"I don't care about your speech." She interrupted once again as I carefully slid the ring onto her left hand. "I care about spending the rest of my life with you and I don't want to wait another second." She managed to say before she knelt down an wrapped her arms around my neck.
We were both crying as she held onto me. I had never felt more complete in my entire life.
