The Butler's Son
Chapter 12: A Trip Down Memory Lane
After Sebastian had finished setting the table he heard laughter outside. Sebastian stepped outside to see what all the fuss was about. Sebastian saw Layla chasing Damien around.
"Got you" Layla said as she picked Damien up and held him above her and swung him around, with Damien laughing the whole time at the experience.
Sebastian smiled lightly as he saw Layla then pull Damien into her arms and then fall onto the grass, still laughing.
'You certainly have changed a lot' Sebastian thought.
'A twelve year old Layla was sitting far away from the younger children of her family. Layla seemed to watch them with a sad expression.
"Whatever is the matter?" James asked as he appeared
Layla sighed "Nothing" Layla said as she continued to watch her young cousins
"You seem like you want to play with them so why don't you?"
"I wouldn't know how" Layla said looking away from James.
James knew why Layla felt this way as he remembered when Layla was younger the other children in the village didn't want to play with her and would instead just bully her. Also since she was an only child she couldn't really play with other children her own age.
"Besides I'm not good with little kids" Layla said as she got up and walked away.'
'You certainly can't say that anymore' Sebastian thought as he approached the two
"Hi Sebastian" Layla said as she carefully sat up, as Damien was now fast asleep snuggled up in her arms
"You certainly have changed a lot"
"What do you mean?" Layla asked tilting her head
"You use to avoid playing with your young family members and look at you now"
"Yes well people change" Layla said as she smiled at the sleeping Damien
"I've been meaning to ask how did Damien find out what I usually say"
"Hmm oh that" Layla said giggling "I told Damien that you tended to say "After all if I couldn't do this then what kind of a butler would I be"" Layla said impersonating Sebastian "And he just decided to say it as well"
Sebastian chuckled lightly at Layla's, surprisingly good, impression of him "And just where did you happen to hear what I say"
"Before Damien was born I researched you to find out more about what you're like with your new master and I found out you said that line quite a lot"
"Interesting" Sebastian said, and found himself smiling as he saw Layla as she placed a gentle kiss on Damien's head "I never thought you would behave like this considering what you use to tell me"
'Layla, aged six, found herself tossing and turning in her bed unable to get to sleep. Layla then got out of bed and opened her window and she heard the distant howling of wolves from the forest. Layla smiled as she heard them. Layla then climbed onto her windowsill and jumped up onto the roof and sat down. Layla admired the full moon and the bright twinkling stars, Layla then closed her eyes and listened to the wolves, enjoying the peace and quite.
"What are you doing out here it's late you know" a voice said behind her
Layla turned and saw James standing on the roof behind her "I couldn't sleep" she said turning back round.
James then walked over and sat down next to Layla.
"I know one day you will eat my soul" Layla said smiling
"What makes you say that?" James said surprised at the sudden change of topic
"Well I can never really picture my life ending up any other way"
"You are quite an odd human" James said chuckling "I don't think I've ever come across someone who wants their soul to be eaten by a demon" James said looking at Layla 'Especially someone so young' he added as an afterthought
"There is always a first" Layla said giggling.'
Layla chuckled at the memory "Well there was a time when I would have made a contract with you for your help but things change" Layla said smiling
"Huh? what's going on" Damien said yawning and rubbing his eyes
"Pardon me but I'm afraid I have to cut our conversation short" Sebastian said looking at his watch "I will see at lunch" Sebastian said bowing before leaving
"What were you and father talking about?" Damien asked as he saw his father leave
"Oh nothing special" Layla said as she stroked Damien head "Just remembering old times"
"Oh okay" Damien said before he yawned and stretched and the sleepiness began to leave him
"What did you dream about sleepy head?"
"Oh nothing special" Damien said rubbing his eyes again "I was also remembering old times"
'A four year old Damien approached Layla.
"Hey Layla" Damien said shyly
"Yes?" Layla said as she turned and saw Damien looking rather shy "What it is it?"
"Can you tell me about father?" Damien said twiddling with his fingers nervously
"Of course" Layla said smiling as she picked up Damien and put him on her lap "What would you like to know?"
"How do you know father?"
"He served my family for generations and I first met him when he was serving my uncle Richard" Layla said smiling fondly at the memory of the demon
"Who is he serving at the moment?"
"A noble at the moment called Ciel Phantomhive and he serves that noble as his butler"
"Really? wow what's he like?" Damien said in excitement.
Layla giggled at Damien's expression and proceeded to tell him what she knew about his father being a butler.
"He sounds amazing" Damien said in awe "I have to be amazing too since I am simply one hell of a butler's son" Damien said laughing and running out of Layla's lap.'
Layla laughed lightly at Damien's response "Oh I remember that day well" Layla said remembering that day
"I want to be just as amazing as both you and father" Damien said with a determined expression
Layla was shocked at Damien's words "Aww that's so sweet of you Damien" Layla said flattered that Damien would see her as just as amazing as his father was "I'm sure you'll be an amazing demon one day"
"Thanks Layla" Damien said hugging Layla.
A/N: They just announced yesterday that the new season of Black Butler will be about the Noah's Ark Circus arc part of the manga called Kuroshitsuji Book of Circus (I can't wait to see that!) and that there will be an OVA episode about the Phantomhive Manor Murder Case arc called Kuroshitsuji Book of Murder (doubly excited now!) and also that they will be coming out in June! (I thought we have to wait till next year!)
