And that was it.
Sesshomaru scanned over the nearly-blank document for the sixteenth time as if more information would magically insert itself the longer he stared. After teaching for a good proportion of his immortal life, Sesshomaru didn't think it would be possible to enroll someone into school with so little background information. Unless their family made a generous donation to the school.
And seeing as how her student file was less than half a page, Sesshomaru imagined it was a very generous donation.
He sighed to himself, folding the manila file shut and slapping it on his desk with a scowl. No medical history, no known address, not even a history of any school she'd previously attended. It made Sesshomaru wonder if Kuroitori was even her real name. The internet told him the only Kuroitori in existence was an Olympic athlete that he doubted had any relation to the young girl in his English class.
Remembering her actions the first time they met, Sesshomaru decided to check police records on the off chance she'd been arrested before. Who was he kidding – it would be surprising if she hadn't been arrested before.
Seconds before Sesshomaru laid his fingers over his keyboard, he sensed a new presence hovering over his shoulder. Female, he could smell. And demonic.
Spinning his desk chair around, he was met with the smooth smile of a slender woman not many years younger than he. A burgundy skirt suit hugged her curves more than should have been appropriate for high school and matched the deep color of her lips. Pointy ears peeked out from her sleeked back hair that made him wonder if she was intentionally showing them off. What grabbed Sesshomaru's attention most, however, was the dark red of her irises set squarely on him.
"You must be Mr. Tashio," she said with a voice thick like caramel. Sesshomaru had never liked caramel. "My name is Kagura – I'm the upper-level physics teacher. It's a pleasure to add you to our staff."
She held out her hand, which Sesshomaru took acting as enthusiastic as he could manage. Though he didn't want to be bothered with colleagues at the moment, being civil was a necessary part of his profession. One he loathed more than any other.
"It's a pleasure to meet you," he greeted in return. He could tell from her casual tone she was hinting for him to give his own first name, but he had no intention of becoming more familiar with this woman.
"I hope you're finding yourself at home here," she continued. "I know how difficult it was when I moved here. If you need help with anything, just let me know."
Sesshomaru nodded in response, brushing off her accentuation of the word 'anything'. "I'll do that–"
"I hope those kids haven't been giving you too much trouble," she chuckled. As if to add to her point, she eyed the manila file over his shoulder.
He cleared his throat, hiding a snort. Briefly his mind flashed to the overly haughty girl in the second row of his class. "No, they've been nothing but friendly," he replied tightly.
Raising her eyebrows, Kagura gave him a knowing look as if the two of them were sharing a private joke. "It's nothing to be embarrassed about. I know Ms. Kuroitori isn't the easiest to get along with."
That peaked Sesshomaru's interest. "What do you mean?"
She sighed. "Oh, you know. Kuroitori is our classic trouble maker. Excellent grades, but horrible attitude. I don't think she's lasted a full month without being absent at least a few days."
"Is that so?" Sesshomaru asked. It certainly seemed to fit the character of a girl who fell asleep in class and worked at a nightclub. "Does anyone know why she's always absent?"
That took Kagura off guard. Her smile faltered and it took her a few moments to come up with an answer. "Well, no. Now that I think about it, she's always called in by her guardian. But I don't think the specifics of her absents were ever discussed."
Sesshomaru wasn't surprised. After the job interview, he had the aching suspicion this school was more of a don't-ask-don't-tell sort of place. As long as the donations kept rolling in, they might not even care about Rin's after school activities – no matter how devious they were.
If it wasn't for the enormous salary and proximity to his younger brother's job, Sesshomaru would never have worked for a place like this.
"Why so interested in Kuroitori?" Kagura asked slyly.
"Just wondering what I'm getting myself into," Sesshomaru brushed off. Before he turned back to his computer, he shook Kagura's hand one more time to signal their conversation was over. "It was a pleasure meeting you, Kagura. I'll be sure to notify you if I need anything else while I'm here."
Her smile seemed a little too seductive for Sesshomaru's taste. "The pleasure was all mine, Mr. Tashio. I hope to see you around."
She gave a tiny wave that highlighted her demonically sharp nails before leaving and Sesshomaru sank back in his chair. He hadn't had such an exhausting day since . . . well since his mother called him in furious tears saying his father had left her. And somehow, a mysterious teenage student of his and one overly friendly physics teacher had given his own mother a run for her money.
Sesshomaru turned back to his computer just as his pocket vibrated ferociously. Too tired to check caller ID, Sesshomaru clicked answer and held it up to his ear without even glancing at it. Instead, he began checking online police records for anyone matching Rin's description.
"Sesshomaru?" Miroku called from the other end of the phone. "Have you heard from Inuyasha?"
"No," Sesshomaru replied with a long sigh. As he half-expected, the records had come up clean. "Why?"
"I've been trying to reach him for over an hour. I know he's working and all, but how long does it take to get a couple of good shots of him?"
Sesshomaru pinched the bridge of his nose. "He said he'd wrap up around five. That's in an hour, can't it wait?"
Sesshomaru could practically hear Miroku grinning over the phone. And once again, he was subtly reminded why Miroku was Inuyasha's friend and more of Sesshomaru's acquaintance.
"Oh all right," Miroku gave in. "But then we're going out for drinks. I'm pretty sure I won who-had-the-most-interesting-first-day-at-work so one of you is buying."
Sesshomaru chuckled dryly at the challenge. "I sincerely doubt that."
My computer is fixed, so here's the next chapter!
Alpha: I think my wording was a little confusing: I'm not dropping this story. I just meant updates may not be as regular as my other story's. Sorry, that could have been clearer!
Thanks everybody who is reading and reviewing!
