Summary: What is a tear? It is like a window, a window to another world. Most of the time they are as dull as dishwater; a different colour towel or tea instead of coffee, but sometimes … sometimes I see something amazing and I pull it trough.

The Wizard and the Lamb

How much can your life change in only a couple of minutes? For as long as she could remember she had been locked up, alone with only the Songbird as her company. The closest thing to human contact was when she watched others through her tears.

Oh how tempted she had been over the years to simply walk through one and visit all those wondrous places she had read about, but she had never dared to do so. None of her books could explain why she could do what she did or what it was for that matter. Yes she had brought things over to her side of the tears, but always only inanimate things. Who knew what happened to a living thing if it crossed a tear?

Maybe she would have risked it in a couple of years. Maybe when she really grew desperate she would just risk it. Who knew? Maybe it wasn't really necessary and she would finally able to pick that damn lock? Or maybe just maybe one of those heroes she read about when she was younger would come and rescue her? Would prince charming, riding on a beautiful white steed approach her, fend off the Songbird and ride off with her and the two of them would have a happily ever after?

No the chance of that happening was slim to none. After all she hadn't seen a real human for as long as she could remember, why should that suddenly change? Well it turned out she had been wrong. Someone did appear; not through the door or something mundane like that. No her unexpected visitor came crashing through the roof.

She wasn't sure what to feel when she had first seen him; fear? The man clearly did not belong there if his way of entry was any indication. Disbelief? Was there really a human being in the same room of her or had she unintentionally opened another tear?

It had been then that the man introduced himself as mister DeWitt, told her he was a friend and he was going to get her out. Despite her better judgment she had felt a budding sense of elation at those words. Could he be speaking the truth? Would she finally be able to leave?

Unfortunately that budding elation was crushed moments later when she heard the sound that indicated Songbird would be entering the room in mere moments. No doubt in response to the man's sudden appearance.

In mere moments he would be there and take mister DeWitt away and she would be alone again. Or at least that was what she thought was going to happen. Instead mister DeWitt had a key … a key to the door that stood between her and freedom!

How he had one she did not known, nor did she care as she grabbed the key and ran for the door. She inserted the key and to her great relief it fitted without any problems. The door was heavy, but she did not allow something like that to stop her.

Once the door was open she ran as fast as she could. Soon, soon she would be able to see the sky for real. She could hear the Songbird try to get her and it only made her run faster through the unfamiliar corridors, mister DeWitt following closely behind her yelling at her to call the elevator.

She wasn't sure what an elevator was, but his follow-up statement of her pressing a button she did understand and even if she did not fully trust the man at least he seems to know what he was doing so she obeyed.

It was then she had received the shock of her life when she spotted a nearby window … a window looking into a very familiar room. A room she had been in not too long ago … only then she had been sure there hadn't been a window. It took only a moment for her mind to supply her with the only possible explanation; a two-way mirror. Buy why? Had someone been observing her from the outside? Why? Was it because of her power to open tears? Had they been watching her all those years?

She didn't get to think about those rather disturbing thought for long as the Songbird chose that moment to make an appearance by crashing through a nearby wall. Her long-term companion looked far more terrifying than she had ever seen him. His normal green 'eyes' were now a menacing red. A feeling of dread the likes she had never felt before nearly paralysed her.

It was that moment that something crashed on the Songbird´s head. To her amazement, the Songbird which had always seemed invincible to her actually fell down at the hands of what she assumed was the elevator she just called.

Mister DeWitt jumped through the hole her former warden had made and onto a flight of stairs. She didn't hesitate for even a moment as she jumped after him; it was not that she wasn't afraid; it was just that it was simply easier to keep following the man who had promised to get her out of the tower then think about all the scary things that were happening around her.

She then ran and ran; higher and higher up the flight of stairs until they eventually encountered another door. This one however was not locked and mister DeWitt opened immediately. The moment the door was open mister DeWitt continued running, but she hadn't followed instead she had mealy gaped at the sight that greeted her as she saw the real outside world for the first time.

She had read about the outside worlds in her books. She had seen it dozens of times in the tears, but nothing could prepare her for the real thing, the heat of the sun on her skin, the wind blowing through her hair, the amazing view … it was all enough to make her forget her all about her fear for a moment.

Fortunately mister DeWitt seemed to have realized she wasn't following him anymore as he yelled at her to continue moving. His command was like a slap in the face as reality sunk in; she maybe finally out, but Songbird would still capture if she didn't move. So she continued running again, something her legs didn't agree with all, but she ignored the pain her completely untrained body was experiencing as she simply kept her eyes on her rescuer and kept moving. After several moments mister Dewitt abruptly stopped and she barely managed to stop herself in time from colliding against him.

Bewildered at why the man who had freed her from the tower had suddenly stopped peered past the taller man. Her heart sank at why she saw; it was the literal end of the road for them. The path they had taken had led them to the roof of her tower. There was nowhere else to go, but back. Why had mister DeWitt led them here? He had said he was rescuing her right?

She heard the screech of the Songbird approaching and the rational side of her understood that it was over. Soon the Songbird would capture her and she would be locked up again. She would probably never see mister DeWitt or the outside world ever again.

Another part of her rebelled against that very notion; she had tried to leave the tower for years and now that she was out she didn't want to go back! These last few moments had been some of the scariest moments of her life, but at the same she had also never felt so alive. She did not want to go back to being alone in the tower!

Then in moment of impulsiveness (and perhaps stupidity) she did something she knew was not a good idea. There were no tears nearby that she could open, but she could change that; without a single thought and only her continued freedom on her mind she tore open a tear right in front of her.

She immediately felt weak in her legs and if she wasn't so distracted she would have felt that her nose had started to bleed. She didn't notice that however, nor did she notice the startled shout of mister DeWitt.

All she saw was that that the tear had almost immediately closed again. Only it had left something behind … or rather someone. Even with her head pounding like crazy she could only stare dumbfounded at the young man. She hadn't expected that to happen that was for sure. At some level she always considered her powers some kind of wish fulfilment so she had hoped she could pull something through that would help them fend off the Songbird she hadn't expected a young man, not looking to be any older than her and definitely not as imposing as mister DeWitt.

It was then that the dark haired male turned toward her and she had to adjust her initial opinion slightly. While she had never pulled a sentient being through a tear she was pretty sure most people would be pretty freaked out. Instead he merely looked resigned. As if getting pulled into a different world was normal for him.

''You're okay?'' He asked after giving mister DeWitt a glance and seemingly dismissing him. ''You're looking a tad pale.''

She blinked owlishly at the strangely dressed young man. She didn't get time to properly register the question let alone an answer as the Songbird choose that moment to fly above them and screech loudly.

The young man turned to regard Songbird and she could see him merely raise an eyebrow at the intimating sight. ''Huh … well that is new.'' The young man muttered before pulling some kind of stick from his pants' pockets and gave the great flying beast a smile. ''Yo,'' He greeted calmly, ''you wouldn't happen to be one of Luna's experiment's would you?''

Author notes

Happy new year everyone! I haven't written as much as I wanted in 2015 as I would have liked and I hope to find more time for it this year. At the very least I want to finish Dragon Soul this year and book one of the rewrite of Fighting Without a Cause.

I hoped you guys liked this little preview of what may one day become a full length HPX Bioshock Infinite story. There are still several things I need to figure out before I can begin writing. For one apparition would make the most of the storyline of the game pointless so I would need to have a believable reason why he can't do that. Also I am not sure how to write the ending. I will not spoil the game for those who haven't played it yet, but for those who have I am sure you can imagine what my problem is.
