Chapter 11:
Gamzee dropped his backpack on the living room floor and began the short walk to his bedroom when his dad called his name. He walked into the kitchen and found his dad cooking something over the stove. There were a few boxes beside the table.
"Will you put those in the shed please?" Kurloz asks pointing at the boxes. Gamzee nods tiredly then picks one of the boxes up and carries it out the back door. He walks across the lawn and finally makes it to the shed where he sets down the box and leans over it panting.
"Need help?"
Gamzee stands up and looks over his shoulder. A wide smile covers his lips.
"Tav, dad doesn't want you here. I'll get in trouble." Gamzee says as he's pulled into a hug.
"I was bored, so I came to see my best friend, it's not illegal you know." Tavros says laughing. Gamzee smiles.
"Fine, if you're gonna be here, help me out okay? I'll bring the boxes and you put them in the shed since you can't go inside and get them." Tavros nods. Gamzee turns around and walks back to his house.
Tavros bends down and lifts the box walking it into the shed and setting it on top of an old washing machine sitting beside a dryer. He turns around and walks back out just as Gamzee approaches the shed with another box. Tavros takes it in to his hands and walks back into the shed, placing it on top of the box. His knee hit a broken mirror and cut through his pant leg. He stepped back and reached down to grab at his knee but stopped. There were a couple of pictures on the ground covered in dirt. He picked them up and looked at them. The first one was of Gamzee and his dad at some type of amusement park. Gamzee looked to be about 4 or 5 and he was dressed in a yellow shirt with purple overalls. His black curly hair had been put up into a side pony tail. Tavros smiled. The next was one of Gamzee. He looked to be about 7 or 8 in this one and he was holding up a piece of paper that said "Best artist award". The look on Gamzee's face was one of pure joy. The last one was of Gamzee and his mom. She was pregnant and had on a long dark green dress. Gamzee looked almost a year older than he was in the last picture. His face was against his mom's stomach, but he wasn't smiling. He wasn't looking at the camera either, he was looking to the side with what seemed to be a scared look on his face, as if he was about to cry. Tavros looked at the edges of the picture to find anything useful when he heard the door to the shed creak.
Right, he almost forgot.
Just as he was about to turn around to take another box, he was shoved forward and the pictures were snatched out of his hand. He turned around and stared at Rafael.
"Where did you find these?" Rafael asked as he looked over the pictures at Tavros. Tavros just glared at him.
"R-Rafael!?" Gamzee stood outside of the shed with a much larger box in his hands. He dropped it and jumped over, darting into the shed and standing in front of Tavros.
Rafael laughed as he turned one of the pictures so that Gamzee could see it. It was the one with his mom.
"I remember that day. You couldn't look away from me." Rafael laughed some more. Tavros felt anger seer through his body immediately.
"Two days before your momma left you huh?" Rafael continued. Gamzee's face went red.
"SHE DIDN'T LEAVE ME! Dad ran her off." Gamzee argued. Tavros was confused. He never knew anything about Gamzee's mom, mainly because talking about her always made him cry. Gamzee did in fact feel as if she left him, but he didn't hate her. He loved her and he believed that she was going to come back for him.
"Right, because she was seeing another man." Rafael said flicking the picture to the ground. Gamzee quickly got down to pick it up. As soon as Gamzee was down Rafael lifted his knee to hit Gamzee. Tavros lunged at him, knocking him back. They fell to the ground, Tavros shouting at him to leave Gamzee alone.
Gamzee watched from where he was in shock. He stared at Tavros, then looked at Rafael then quickly jumped to his feet.
"PLEASE STOP!" Gamzee shouted.
"Gamzee!? Gamzee what's going on in here!?" Kurloz shouted as he ran over to the shed. Gamzee hurried to yank Tavros off of Rafael but Kurloz beat him to it.
Kurloz slapped Tavros as hard as he could. They glared at each other, Tavros holding his cheek and Kurloz holding Gamzee back.
"WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!?" Tavros shouted, his face red and beads of sweat dripping down. Gamzee only wanted to run to Tavros and hug him, hold him. He was scared, he didn't want Tavros to fight his dad, Tavros was only 15, he wasn't tough enough, and if he hurt Kurloz Rafael would hurt him.
"Why do you protect that bastard?" He paused to catch his breath then pointed at Gamzee. "He's the one you need to be protecting. He's your son."
Gamzee finally pushed Kurloz's arm out of his way and grabbed Tavros by his hand and yanked him out of the shed.
"Go away Tavros, go home, I'm fine." Gamzee said hurriedly as he heard his father and Rafael stomp out. Tavros shook his head angrily. "Please go Tavros. I'll see you tomorrow. I don't want to lose my best friend, you're all I got, please go. Please."
"Gamzee-" Tavros began but was cut off when Gamzee hugged him. Kurloz watched from the entrance of the shed, his chest rose and fell quickly as he huffed in anger. "I'm calling the fucking pol-"
"If you do that I won't forgive you." Gamzee growled looking at Tavros. Tavros stared at him baffled.
"What!? Why?" Tavros asked. Gamzee looked over his shoulder then back at Tavros.
"Because he's my dad and needs me. If you're really my best friend you won't do it." Gamzee said, "If you tattle on my dad, I will never speak to you again."
"But Gamzee-"
"I SWEAR TO THE MIRTHFUL MESSHIAHS. We will not even see each other." Gamzee says as he shoves Tavros back by his chest. Tavros clenched his jaw but finally turned around and climbed over the fence.
